Welcome
It’s Been A Month Of Foundation Building The month of May at the Senior Center could best be described as the month we laid new foundations. The reception area of the building has new carpet. The dining room and ballroom got a Marc Kane, Center Director fresh coat of paint. The membership approved new bylaws creating a new membership council to guide us into the future. The City of Klamath Falls pledged a contribution to next year’s meals programs and United Way increased their pledge for next year’s meals as well. The County Commissioners approved a new branch library soon to be installed within the Senior Center and also declared our drive way a real road that will be resurfaced in June. Finally the Board of Directors has elected new members (see related bulletin on page 10) for the next year that fills all vacancies including those to be created by three board members leaving the board at the end of June. At the beginning of July we will have a full board of nine with four new members and one former member returning after some time off the board. What will be built on our renewed foundation? First our team will go to work to fine tune and evaluate all the programs to which we have present commitments. Then it will be a time to wait for and listen to a new membership council to help point the way. A Strategic planning process will begin soon that will rely on input not just from our members but from all our partners and others that relate to us in whatever way, be they patrons, vendors, funding agencies, local governments and special districts, and more. A new emphasis will be explored in the process as we will examine our role in the proposed intergenerational community center. The prospect of new programs based on intergenerational sharing and support will open many new opportunities for all, and all will be welcome. It seems that we have struggled with a poor economy for too long, and we all long for growth and better times. I for one am excited as I peak over the edge of the rut of this poor economy
and see a new horizon and new possibilities. Our new foundations will lift us out of the rut and on a new path. I encourage you to think as you read this what your role might be. Will we hear from you? Will we come to know better what your needs may be? Will you join in a new membership with a new council to point us on our way? Will you renew your volunteer efforts or perhaps be one of our new volunteers? Join us! We celebrate life! Marc Kane Executive Director, Klamath Basin Senior Citizens’ Center

Volunteers At Work! We Love Our Volunteers!
The Senior Center has many opportunities for volunteer service. Most know us for our Meals On Wheels Volunteers and those that work in our Meals Preparation areas, but there are many other opportunities at the Center for Volunteering. Featured here on this page are volunteers from Home Depot and the Klamath Basin Home Builders Association. They gave up their weekend recently to repaint our center. In addition the Home Depot Foundation provided funds for the paint materials and new carpeting.
Is your business, organization or service club looking for a community service project? The Klamath Senior Center has a project for you. Call Marc Kane at the Center to offer your services. The Center also provides volunteer opportunities working with individuals, assisting in home care and transportation and in our activity programs such as Bingo.

Fly Me Strong!
Silent Soldiers
by Audrey E. Davis
by Robert G. Black, May 31, 2010
I was flying softly in the breeze this morning, As I saw you driving by, in the lane. You raised you hand in a quiet salute, And I thank you for caring for me again.
In silent ranks the soldiers’ headstones March across the hills of green. They guard the bodies resting there Their spirits freed, unseen
For letting others know, I am your flag. Red, white and blue, of the USA. And I’ve been carried all over this world, For many different reasons today.
From all across America They came at freedom’s call, And gave their lives on foreign soil That tyranny might fail.
Our men and women in uniform, Watch over me, with a great deal of pride... And they are carried me, with tears running down their faces, In memory of friends, who have fought beside them and died!
Their families were from every land, From every race and creed, And willingly they took up arms To fill our nation’s need.
I love my stripes...all thirteen of them, And the fifty stars and blue field. My pride in my country shows plainly, And the wind wraps around me, as a shield.
From city, town and farm they came To share a precious dream. They strove and worked to pass the test As soldiers, still so green.
Remember to fly me, was often as you can, and don’t treat me, as some have done, Our country still remains free... And it’s because our men and women have fought and won!
Some were handsome, some were plain; All knew treasured love. Their spirits were prepared to learn And blessed from up above.
They will all be home soon, I shall come too, Ill be with them every step of the way... Till then I continue to fly high and strong, And we shall all be together again someday!
Grand destiny ordained that some would live, But these would die. The fragile bodies could not take Bombardment from the sky.
I rest in the homes of many families Who have lost loved ones in wars. They know what they have meant to me, And their faith strengthens this country of ours!
The bloody, broken soldiers’ bodies, So unlike the joy in life were buried with our honored love With lives so young and brief. Husbands, fathers, brothers lost, Sons and uncles never known; And in that foreign battlefield, So many years have flown.
Sounds of Morning by Toni Bailie Rising sun shouts about a brand new day glittering frost facets chime their tiny bells in the grass, while the Earth murmurs her deep brown musings.
I ride the surf of my breath whooshing in and out coyote tenors rehearse their arias my dog's metronome tail measures the beat of life, teaching me to wag more and bark less
Now silence rules the battlefields Old memories grow dim: This knowledge of their sacrifice And early deaths so grim. These soldiers gave the greatest gift That anyone can give; The gift of life they gave ensures That freedom might still live

Horseback Riding with H.E.A.R.T.
There is something wonderful happening on Lower Klamath Lake Road in Klamath Falls. Kids with special needs are riding horses with assistance from H.E.A.R.T. The Horse Enthusiast Adaptive Riding Therapy program is a small non-profit organization that serves the special needs community with adaptive horseback riding lessons year round in Klamath Falls. This organization is run by a volunteer board and volunteerism is at the core of H.E.A.R.T.’s mission and values. H.E.A.R.T. is constantly reaching out to the community and has a presence at many events in Klamath Falls; most recently the AgExpo, Packing Clinic and Intergenerational Day of Play. The program is always looking for volunteers to assist in various roles and would be a perfect opportunity for active seniors to get involved. Adaptive riding lessons include the rider and instructor as well as lead and side walkers for safety. The lessons and equipment are adapted to each individual’s level of ability and volunteers are paid in high fives and priceless smiles. H.E.A.R.T. recently acquired a new mounting ramp that will enable us to mount wheelchair bound individuals. This vital piece of equipment was made in partnership with KCC and local businesses and made possible by a grant from the West Family Foundation. The installation of this mounting ramp will enable H.E.A.R.T. to serve a larger segment of the special needs community. Find H.E.A.R.T. on their New Website at www.heartofklamath.org to learn more about adaptive horseback riding lessons and how you can get involved.

Cleaning out the flotsam and jetsam Housekeeping — not my favorite thing to do. How about you? But, let’s translate this into our bodies. Did you know that our cells are filled with flotsam and jetsam that exercise helps clear out? Bear with me on this as it gets slightly technical. We all have structures (or organelles) within our cells that produce energy. These are called mitochondria. Cells also contain strings of proteins, cellular membranes, invasive viruses and bacteria, among other components. Over time, cells accumulate flotsam and jetsam that require “house” cleaning to remain efficient. This process of cleaning out is called autophagy (or self-eating). Have I lost you yet? A cell’s life Scientists have begun to believe that if the process of autophagy isn’t efficient, cells become choked, malfunction or die. It is thought that this
inefficiency might contribute to the rise of disease, including diabetes, muscular dystrophy, Alzheimer’s and cancer. Inefficiencies in autophagy also can contribute to age-related sluggishness within the cell structure. I don’t know about you, but I’m sure feeling outwardly sluggish at times — struggling to win back that high energy that used to be readily available. Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center recently reported on a study of mice that holds promise for humans. You guessed it. Their research supports the idea that exercise produces a more efficient cleaning out of the flotsam and jetsam in the cells; and thus can slow the disease-producing bits, plus slow the aging process. Stressed cells Studying autophagy is a relatively new approach to research. Their hypothesis is that when cells are stressed, as in physical exercise, they round up and consume superfluous bits of themselves more efficiently to

keep the rest of the cell alive. It was a bit of a stretch for me to imagine how researchers could measure autophagy, but this is what they did. They simply had the lab mice run for 30 minutes. The mice had been medically treated — a bit sad — so the membranes within the cell that accumulate flotsam and jetsam glowed. After running, evidence suggests the mice’s cells were undergoing accelerated autophagy — meaning the cells were getting cleaned out and rejuvenated. There were other tests performed which might explain why some of us have better reactions than others to, let’s say, an aerobic class. But, generally, the research supports the idea that exercise produces a housekeeping function. It even convinced one of the researchers to become a more consistent exerciser. She bought a treadmill. sporadic venture. As a senior with perhaps some physical challenges, you don’t need to do high-level aerobics, but you do need to move more. Weather permitting, start walking outdoors, and over time, increase your speed and distance. The Steen Sports Park soccer building offers an indoor track for walking, plus, the outdoor trail is almost 3 miles. On it, there are cut-offs if you can’t make it all the way around. That said, it’s pretty muddy (and slippery) at the moment. If you have limited funds, most gyms and clubs in the area have senior rates. And, if you are in a residential care center, join in the classes offered. Think of the process of autophagy. The more you sit, the more tired you will feel and the less efficient your entire cellular structure. How about a daily, or maybe three times per week bit of housekeeping? Executive Director, Marc Kane, thanks all that participated in developing the new bylaws and helping to achieve such a high level of support. Now it is time to implement some new provisions and one is the formation of a new Member’s Council of 12 to 18 members. Up to two of those members will sit on the KBSCC Board as advisors.
