Welcome It will soon be the first day of Summer, a day always welcome here in the Basin where we value sunny outdoor recreation so highly, especially camping in such a gorgeous area of the world. Our volunteers will be taking vacations just like everyone else, so we are hoping others in our community can step up as volunteers to take their place, if only for a short while. Of course we Marc Kane, Center Director hope the experience will be found to be addictive and you will stay for the many benefits experienced by volunteers in giving to others. Please note the volunteer want ads on page 14 of this publication. A special thanks is due to Bob and Lana Shaw. They have been long time patrons and supporters of the Senior Center and have donated their time and some nursery stock this past month to beautify the front of our building. In addition Dave Cobb Yard Care has pledged a donation of time to clean up the Arthur Street side of our building by trimming all the trees between the road and the building. Thank you Dave, Bob and Lana.
We continue to accept submissions to the poetry and prose pages titled Expressions of Heart and Mind and to our new Heirloom Recipe Corner. These are great places to share, and I am happy to report that these sections are well read as I receive a lot of positive remarks about them. This month the Senior Center has assumed full responsibly for staffing the Community Lounge downtown. It’s a lot more than responsibility, it is also a great opportunity for the Center to establish a presence downtown and make our programs more accessible to the residents of the downtown area. See the article on page 13 relating to the Lounge.

Our Board of Directors I must say is one of the very best and hard working boards I have ever had the pleasure to work with. We have a vacancy there coming up at the end of June. If you have already shown enough interest to be reading these words you are likely to be someone of interest to us in replacing Darlaine Watson who retires from the board this year. We all offer a great THANK YOU to Darlaine who has been part of the Center for many years. Please take some time if you see her to offer your thanks as well. Darlaine will continue to serve in other ways but she will be missed on the board. Whoever is selected to replace Darlaine will be joining an awesome group who work together well.
My check is enclosed payable to KBSCC.
One great piece of work recently completed by the Board’s Development Committee is the draft strategic plan. They are a real hard working bunch having met numerous times over the past year. You can assist by reviewing their work in this issue and by offering up any comments you may have before the next board meeting on June 25th. See page 6.

Opportunities to support the Klamath Senior Center and have some fun all in one The Senior Center and other service agencies are all experiencing challenges with funding as government funding decreases and the economic struggles of our local economy continue . The Senior Center alone lost over $150,000 in government funding from one year to the next this last year. The Center is faced with either severe service cuts or turning to the community for increased support. We believe the community highly values its senior citizens and the programs that the Senior Center offers in their support. Listed on this page are coming events that provide an opportunity for fun and entertainment while also providing a means to raise additional finds for our senior support programs. Join Us ! We Celebrate Life !.

New Balance and Stability Class to be Introduced in July
Tina Mahacek will bring a new preventive health program to the Senior Center beginning in July. Tina is already well known to many at the Senior Center as the co-instructor for our Tai Chi Program. The Balance and Stability Class will be once a week for 5 weeks in July (Wednesday’s at 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. When registering please indicate a preference to attend the class either at the Community Lounge downtown on Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 am or at the Klamath Senior Center, 2045 Arthur Street, on Fridays at 12:30 to 1:30 pm. Each session will involve exploration of movements designed to recruit more of your body to participate. You have more to work with than you realize. You can re-create the way you use your body to improve balance and stability. The sessions are gentle, exploratory and fun. You will be surprised at the ease and extent of change you can achieve in a short time. The Awareness Through Movement lessons we will be exploring are the work of Moshe Feldenkrais who spent decades mapping out possibilities of the human nervous system to improve function. People can learn their way out of pain and limitation by deepening awareness of habitual movement patterns and by learning new options. For classes, wear comfortable non-restrictive clothing; bring a mat or quilt for floor work and a small towel to fold for your head. Cost is a suggested donation of $1 to $5 per class. No one will be turned away if they are unable to. Your instructor is Tina Mahacek, a licensed physical therapist, licensed massage therapist and (in June) Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner.. To register please call or visit the Klamath Basin Senior Center, 2045 Arthur St., 541-883-7171 or for questions call Tina Mahacek, 541-2741555. You are not stuck where you are.

Klamath Basin Senior Citizens Center DRAFT Strategic Plan 2014-2016 Board Set To Approve New Strategic Plan. Comments are Welcomed. The Klamath Senior Center Board is preparing to approve a new strategic plan for the center to guide its actions and development over the new few years. The plan is published here for review. Comments are welcomed and should be addressed to the center director prior to the next board meeting to be held on Wednesday, June 25th. Introduction and agency history: As this plan is initially approved in June of 2014 the Senior Center is approaching 45 years of service to residents of the Klamath Basin. The location of the Center and its name have changed over the years but the main location of the organization’s headquarters has been located at 2045 Arthur Street in Klamath Falls since August of 1981. The current building was built with donated materials and labor and rests on property owned by Klamath County. Although the specific services change from time to time the focus of the Center’s efforts has always been to provide a gathering place for community residents, especially seniors, and to provide services that encourage the ability of our elderly neighbors to remain in the community in their own homes with the supports needed to maintain proper nutrition and good physical and mental health. The core of the Center’s services has always centered around helping seniors to remain connected and attached to family, other residents and the community in general. Comments about our services and planning efforts are always welcome so that we remain as responsive as possible to the needs of our community. I. Dad By Sharon (Johnston) Pappas
Sweetums By Sharon Hudson
You were young and full of life Had a family and a beautiful wife Working and playing together each day Riding the feed truck, tossing off the hay There were bonfires for skating and sledding too Zoomin’ down the hill hanging onto you.
I walked in the door and And my cat started naggin I said, keep that up And I’ll fix your wagon Little did I know that Statement would come true I let out a huge sneeze and a loud ahh choo! She took off running And was scared out of her wits Hid under the bed, probably thinking “This is the pits”
We laughed and screamed in the dark of night While you growled like a bear just out of sight. Riding and roping you loved to do Winning money and belt buckles too. Off we’d go in the pick-up truck With a one horse trailer wishing for luck. Mom sang us songs as we flew down the road Happy as clams, what a sight to behold. Now there are grandkids and great ones too Living the life that we once knew. The treasures are rich we hold in our heart Our love for each other will never part. Let’s cherish the times near and past Each moment a treasure forever will last! She wants to rob me of my dignity And self respect too I can’t let her do that. I have Earned all I get. So what do I do?
She came out later And bit me on the toe Not very hard, just Enough to let me know She was testing the waters Is the coast clear? I felt bad when I scared her I didn’t want to instill fear She was alive, I didn’t kill her I was worried about that After all, she’s my pampered, noisy Seventeen year old Siamese cat My cat and I are Considerably better now Sometimes she even greets me With a gentle meow I hope that I don’t have Another sneeze like that But my doctor just told me I’m allergic to my cat!
Vitamin C by Robert G. Black
Vitamin C is a nutrient that is vitally important for the proper functioning of our human bodies. Our bodies cannot make this vitamin, and we have to get it in our diets. This vitamin is also called ascorbic acid for those birds and animals that synthesize their own supply of this vitamin and do not need to get it in their diet. This important vitamin is a vital ingredient in the formation of collagen, which is a component of all of the cell walls and connective tissues in our bodies. With insufficient vitamin C, this collagen is poorly formed and separates with the slightest pressure. Collagen acts as a glue to hold the cell walls together and to bind the cells to each other Any weakness in this collagen will result in cell separation, the escape of blood from the capillaries and the escape of fluids from the cells. In humans, this means that bruising and bleeding gums occur very easily as one of the earliest symptoms of a lack of sufficient vitamin C in the diet. A severe human lack of vitamin C in the diet causes scurvy, a disease in which the cells separate easily with any muscle activity, and both internal and external bleeding causes death as the blood escapes from the poorly formed arteries, veins, and capillaries into the muscle and organ tissues. When animal tissue is boiled down to extract the collagen, the resulting compound is called gelatin. In periods of stress, your body’s need for ascorbic acid skyrockets, and in humans under severe stress, the limited vitamin C storage in the adrenal glands is depleted in a matter of seconds. Also, vitamin C is the most easily destroyed of all the vitamins. The greatest destruction occurs as a result of exposure to the oxygen in the air causing oxidation of the vitamin C. Storage and exposure to trace minerals are also very destructive to the vitamin C content of our foods. Cooking destroys much of the vitamin C in foods, also, since this vitamin is unstable in heat. Fortunately, freezing does not damage the vitamin C content of our foods. A study by the United States Department of Agriculture indicated that half of the students in the United States were not getting even the daily amount of vitamin C that is recommended by the United States Food and Drug Administration. Many nutrition researchers feel that even these recommended amounts are far too low for optimal health. A staggering amount of needless suffering occurs each day in the human sphere simply because of lack of knowledge on the subject of vitamin C and other important nutrients. This knowledge is now easily available, and you have an obligation to your Creator to learn all you can about the nutrition and care of this marvelously functioning machine that we call a human body..

Senior Center Volunteers to Staff Community Lounge
Mary Gilbert Retires After 16 Years of Service Mary Gilbert has been planning her retirement from the Community Lounge for sometime now and has spent the last year training and orienting volunteers from the Klamath Senior Center. May 29th was Mary’s last day staffing the Community Lounge which she has done faithfully for nearly 16 years. She has been a friendly and supportive face to many who frequent the downtown area and who step into the lounge for rest and socialization. Many gathered on Mary’s last day, including the Lounge Board of Directors, to wish Mary a farewell. A group of four volunteers from the Senior Center are teaming up to fill Mary’s “shoes”. The Senior Center continues to recruit additional volunteers for this task in the hopes that the Community Lounge will be able to expand its hours. Currently the Lounge is open week days from 10 to 2.

KU Student Hernandez Completes Senior Project With the Klamath Senior Center The Klamath Senior Center was the beneficiary of Christian Hernandez’s Senior Project this year. Hernandez will graduate this year from Klamath Union High School and hopes to pursue continued education and a career in gerontology. Hernandez taught computer classes this past year to seniors at the Center on Saturday mornings. He worked one-on-one with a number of patrons of the Senior Center and received high praise from all the individuals that he worked with. In addition Hernandez assisted the Center with interviewing Seniors in their homes to help determine their need for additional community support. In this role he was participating in a pilot project aimed at developing a neighborhood support program for senior residents. Pictured in this article Hernandez sits with Center Director Marc Kane at a recent community health fair that Hernandez worked to organize at Klamath Union High School on May 28th. The Center had a booth at the fair which promoted the Center and its SHIBA Program, a free counseling service for those needing assistance with Medicare enrollment. Hernandez also served this last year as the president of the Kiwanis Key Club at Klamath Union High. In the course of those duties he guided the club in volunteering to do snow removal work for local residents who met an income eligibility standard set by the City. That project was designed to turn volunteer support into cash support for the Meals-On-Wheels Programs using funds that the City had dedicated to Senior Support. The Center is encouraging other students to consider the Senior Center as a focus for various senior class projects and community service.

Health Equity Issues Project Carlson’s Furniture Recieves Grant
Klamath County Health Department The Klamath County Health Department was recently awarded an exciting new grant that aims to address health equity issues through a coalition. The coalition’s purpose is to explore ways to eliminate health disparities and inequities in underrepresented or underserved populations. This could be through trainings for community members, training for medical/human services community, awareness-raising events, policy advocacy, increasing access to services or other avenues the coalition decides are needed in the community to improve the overall health of the County. There are several related groups within the health and human services field and this may seem duplicative. Our goals will undoubtedly align and compliment the important work already being done, but this coalition is unique in that it engages lay community members and provides authentic community engagement. We are hoping to gain health and human services professionals, but ideally we want community members who are experiencing these inequities to participate in the coalition as well and help drive the discussions and activities. We also are reaching out to the outlying communities within Klamath County in the hopes of representing the needs of the entire County. Communities we have identified as underrepresented are Hispanic/ Latino, people with disabilities, low-income, LGBT, and Tribal communities. The coalition is planning to improve the health of Klamath County and promote better utilization of Oregon health programs which will overall save our system lives and dollars. The first coalition meeting is scheduled for June 18th. Subsequent meetings will be held on the third Wednesday of each month The meetings will be held in the evenings to make it easier for members to attend. Attendees should call Heidi Vaughn at the Heath Department, 541-882-8846, to confirm the time and place of each meeting. We are looking to recruit individuals and organizations who would be strong advocates for Klamath County as well as people who can communicate their situation and offer suggestions to better meet the needs of the community. If you are interested or could assist in recruiting community members please contact me for more information, consider attending our coalition meetings, or even displaying one of the coalition flyers in your establishment. Also, feel free to pass this on to other interested parties. Let me know however you are willing to take part in our cause and lets make a difference for Klamath County! “Why is health equity important? We all benefit economically, educationally, and socially when all our communities are thriving.” -Office of Equity and Inclusion Please Contact: Heidi Vaughn hvaughn@co.klamath.or.us 541-882-8846.
