MARCH • 2014 | Active Seniors • 3

Welcome March has always been a special month in my family. Over the years my family’s last name was O’Kane before Kane, O’Cannon before that, and that came after Cannon. We have just a bit of Irish in us and St. Patrick’s Day is always one to be celebrated. It is really a day to celebrate good will and to wish the best for all, not just the Irish. The Irish wish things like, “May the road Marc Kane, Center Director rise to meet you”, a phrase from a very popular Irish prayer. The sentiments are similar to our mission here at the Senior Center. The Senior Center strives to make a path for seniors that is encouraging, supportive and which recognizes not only their past contributions but whatever our seniors have to offer with all those years of wisdom. We strive to “rise” roads of sound nutrition, good health and opportunities for personal growth, for we believe we never cease to learn. We wish for the, “wind to be at your back, and for the sun to shine warmly upon your face.” We encourage our seniors to keep moving and to stay active. We encourage seniors to remain connected with family and friends and to feel the warmth of community. We are striving to develop and sustain programs here at the Center that can encourage all these things not just for the very elderly but for those just entering their years of wisdom as well. We hope the community takes notice and lends support in whatever way, be it with contributions of time, money , talent or just by participating in the many activities we have to offer. This month as promised we have extended our presence to the downtown area with new offerings at the Community Lounge. A new YOGA class is one activity that will be offered this month at that new location. See an article about this on page 11. Also take notice of our Save-The-Date announcement. We are planning a major fund raiser to support programs at the Center, especially our Seniors Meals Programs. Hope to see you here on Friday, April 25th for dinner, music and dance. Printed on this page is a coupon to be used for making contributions. It is our hope that people will notice the new opportunity for recurring gifts. I am making special mention of this because we have yet to receive

a recurring gift pledge from this coupon, although we have a number of

contributors who do make recurring gifts. In the face of declining support from nearly all of our government sponsors we must strive to build a clan of sustaining givers. We hope that “the rain will fall softly on our fields” with the support of our whole community.

Our seniors have done so much and in so many ways to provide the community and benefits we all share. Let’s remember them this St. Patrick’s Day and all the days of the year.

Sleep Awareness

Article submitted by Klamath Hospice, Inc.

Sleep Awareness Week is March 2-9, 2014. It is an annual education and awareness campaign to promote the importance of sleep. How much sleep do you really need? According to the National Sleep Foundation, adults need seven to nine hours of sleep per night to function at their best. Sleep patterns change as a person ages. Those who don’t sleep enough are more susceptible to depression, attention and memory problems, and excessive daytime sleepiness. It’s more likely they will be affected by more nighttime falls and have a greater sensitivity to pain. It is also speculated that insufficient sleep can lead to serious health problems in older adults. Some of these include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, weight problems and breast cancer in women. A few tips for improving sleep from HelpGuide.org Get involved. Individuals should stay highly involved in social activities, family and work; if retired, try volunteering, joining a seniors’ group or taking adult education classes. Develop a regular exercise plan. Regular exercise is shown to release endorphins that can boost your mood and reduce stress, depression and anxiety. Expose yourself to more sunlight. Sunlight is shown to regulate melatonin and sleep-awake cycles. Limit stimulants. Caffeine, alcohol and nicotine are all stimulants and often disrupt the quality of sleep.

Donor List

January Donations of $ 4,778.00 were received from the following individuals:

Larry Mitchell Beverly Hustead Faith Tabernacle Klamath County Rotary Club Avril Fischer Dorothy Winters Cynthia Aldrich Ernie Palmer Ramona Overson William Keeney Joel Dubray Bill Watson Jahalla Shaffer

Linda Bourcy Burl Parrish Samuel Hawley Dorothy Rowland Donna Maloney Lesandra Moretty Mark Mickelsen Gertrude Sears Robert Beach Rose Chapman Wilford Dunster Thomas Flanagan La Vera Petersteiner Etta Holly

Joyce Moore Pat Abel Rose Kruezer Opal Baert Elizabeth Western William and Marion Switzer Guy Turnage Grace Turnage Mary Ellen Sargent Constance Schuetze Elvin Middleton Irene McLean Blythe Stenmark

Unidentified contributions in January for Meals , Transportation and Other Services amounted to $4,884 We are currently campaigning to have new sustaining or recurring givers who recognize the value of our services and the importance of long term support. In the next issue we will begin recognizing those individuals who make multiple (or recurring) gifts and are able to provide $600 or more in support throughout the year. They will be listed here in a separate category and recognized for their reliability and extraordinary support. Our goal is to develop a group of 100 members in this elite group of supporters. Looking over the list of current contributors we have several now that will move to this new category. We hope you will consider joining this group. We will be honored to provide you special recognition for your support. In addition we are asking supporters to help us name this new category of givers. Give the director, Marc Kane, a call at 883-7171 Ext 117 and offer up your suggestion. Here’s a few ideas: “Foundation Builders” , “Sustainers”, “The Reliables”, “Futurists”, and your suggestion . Over the last two years government funding sources for our programs has been declining. Many believe that is a good thing, but that also means we must find on-going private and individual sources of support to maintain the critical services we offer our elderly neighbors in need. We are proud to offer our services to those who have built and supported our community for so long, and hope you feel the same. New Ways To Donate: Please note the contributions coupon on page 3. We have many uses for donations and look forward to your support. The donor coupon has now been redesigned to allow for donations by credit or debit cards. With this change you will now be able to designate a recurring gift that would be charged periodically to your card.

Expressions of Heart and Mind

By Marc Kane The following poem is from my closest friend who lost his wife this last month to cancer. Its untitled and written during her last days. She passed at home with him at her side. Warm Gin and Morphine in the morning: I am the worst of all nurses but the best for you, being the worst of all patients but the best for me -And who left Gin by the bedside for a lazy hurried and harried husband to find? Oh my dear, 43 valentine days later I am surprisingly unimproved in ways you still whisper about from your bedside, even as we are twined in this intricate last dance and you know you taught me every step I know. Today, for Valentine’s Day, I bought you 90 dollar a pound caviar and rented a hospital bed for dessert, making my tear stained pallet on the floor next to you. Two thirds of our lives we’ve shared and I am terrified of the void you’ll leave me cradling. Yes death we know will find us all, but I would suspend, just once, the order of the universe As would every other lover despite the resultant end of life as we know it.

Please submit something for us to consider printing in our next issue. Submittals should be sent to the attention of Marc Kane, Executive Director, Klamath Basin Senior Citizens Center.

THIS OLD TRACTOR By Sharon (Johnston) Pappas The worn out tractor sat silent inside the barn Remembering days of a life on the farm Its wheels haven’t turned since being parked that day After years in the field, with the help of a stick, its master walked away In the beginning before the days flew It’s cushion was soft, shiny and new Days ticked by as round the field they’d go The cushion gave way to a pillow, hands on the wheel, stiff and slow The fields are still touched by the sun and rain Only memories of the tractor and the man remain But sometimes in the wind and where the hawk flies There’s the sound of the tractor and its master beneath the blue skies FRIENDS FOREVER By Sharon (Johnston) Pappas Mom, “Let’s be friends forever”, is what the picture said Drawn long ago by a little girl with colors of blue and red The feelings ran deep as each memory appeared Bringing a flood of joy, a smile and a tear Their hearts connected, beating as one Time together brought hours of laughter and fun Now mom’s an angel, in heaven it seems Leaving love and friendship in this little girls’ dream

Writer’s Corner Cont. ST. PATRICKS DAY By Sharon Hudson St. Patrick’s Day is almost here It seems to spread lots of Irish cheer The color of the day is always green Be sure to wear it, where it can be seen Corned beef and cabbage will be cooking in the pot It makes a good meal, and is liked a lot Some people like to drink green beer They toast each other and shed a happy tear Some find clovers with leaves of four They make a wish and hope for more The leprechauns are hiding and watching their gold Hoping no one will steal it; could someone be so bold? I hope you enjoy this pleasant time of year Have a good time and keep your friends near Remember the beginning of spring is a few days away It’s full of life as it begins a brand new day

Volunteer Corner

Pay It Forward

Do you ever wish that you had the recipe for your mother’s special vegetable soup or your grandmother’s apple pie. So often we don’t think about asking for recipes that are special to us and then the opportunity passes us by. We are starting what we hope will be a monthly feature to preserve those heirloom recipes for your family and our readers.

Volunteers “Pay it Forward” by helping those who can no longer do certain activities/projects they did in years past. They now find that they need just a little help now and then. As Volunteers for KBSCC, we can Pay it Forward now knowing that in the future when we need assistance, someone will come forward to help us.

Do you have special family recipes that you, your parents or grandparents made? If so we would love for you to share your heirloom recipes with us.

I am including a list of current programs that utilize volunteers. From this list, you can see the projects are quite diversified. You can call me at the number listed below and I will be glad to talk to you and give you an idea of the amount of time required for the different programs. This way you can be sure that the program fits you and the time that you have to donate.

Please submit your recipes to Klamath Basin Senior Citizens Center, 2045 Arthur Street, P.O.Box JE, Klamath Falls, OR 97602.

CAROL’S TACO SOUP Passed from one generation to another and submitted to us by our friends at Basin Transit Service MIX TOGETHER 2 lbs ground beef, browned 2 pkgs taco seasoning mix 1 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp salt 1 tsp pepper 1 tsp chipotle ground pepper, optional

If you have friends or acquaintances that might like to Pay it Forward as volunteers, please give them my phone number as listed below.

Cook in slow cooker for a few hours. Can be eaten with tortilla chips in bowl with grated cheese and sour cream on top. Good with chili Frito scoops.

LIST OF PROGRAMS Meals-On-Wheels: Drivers and runners always needed. Congregate Meals at the Center: Kitchen helpers and servers needed. This monthly newsletter: contributors always welcome. Senior Center Expands Programs to the Community Lounge

WALK WITH EASE a program for better living

Experience the Walk With Ease Program.

Arthritis Foundation Certified. Doctor Recommended. FREE Leader Training and Certification in Walk With Ease, a low-intensity walking program Financial and technical assistance are available for organizations and individuals interested in offering a Walk With Ease program. Build the health of your community by starting a program today!

Under a cooperative agreement with the Community Lounge at 7th and Pine Streets in Klamath Falls the Senior Center has extended its presence to the downtown area. There is already a lending library there, a community puzzle board, and beginning next week on March a 11th a new Senior YOGA Class. Registration will be required for the class which will be limited to the first ten individuals to sign up. There will be a requested donation for each class of $2.00. Call Judy at the Senior Center, 883-7171, to register. The class will be lead by our volunteer Tara Frey. Why Yoga? By Tara Frey If you’ve ever had to sit to put your shoes on, use the arms of a chair to stand or slow your pace to step off a curb you might benefit from Yoga. If you are passing on Yoga because you think you have to have the flexibility of a cat or be able to put your legs behind your head, you’re missing out. Yoga is the practice of holding and moving through a series of positions, or “poses” to improve muscle strength, balance, flexibility and body control. All of these things are especially important as we age. The focus of Yoga is not achievement of the pose, but the process you go through to accomplish it. In a beginning class your instructor will emphasize starting with stable and supported positions for safety, and will take into consideration your current level of balance and flexibility, working with you to accomplish your goals. Many classes can be centered around improving balance specifically, and a growing number of adults 55 and older are finding their strength and stability improve after trying Yoga and consistently participating in a class 2-3x weekly. If you’ve been on the fence about Yoga, it’s time you get on the mat and give it a try! About Tara Frey: Tara Frey comes to us with a degree in Gerontology, is a certified personal trainer and also a physical therapy aide. She is the owner of Catalyst Fitness, a local business offering personal trainer services. She is concentrating her efforts in hands-on experiences working with the senior population. Tara is also a past instructor for the Sit and Fit class at Crystal Terrace.

Research shows that Walk with Ease can help:

• Decrease disability, pain, stiffness, and fatigue • Improve self-confidence, control over arthritis, balance, and strength • Teach people how to walk safely and comfortably • Motivate people go get and stay active! Program materials, lunch, and certification are included in training.
