Welcome Summer has come to an end and we will soon see many of our senior friends off on their trips to the South, only to be seen again when the Spring comes. They will travel to other communities where they may participate in the programs of other senior centers. They readily adapt each year to new ways of doing things and new programs, and frequently they bring us new ideas and ways of doing things for our own center here in Klamath Falls.
We are working hard to embrace the needs of all our patrons with both the old and the new. We are also working hard to keep up with new regulations and demands placed upon us. If you are not a member please sign on, pitch in, and help us plan for our future. Join Us! We Celebrate Life! Marc Kane Executive Director
Marc Kane, Center Director
Meanwhile we will be facing much change here at the Klamath Falls Senior Center and we pray that our year-round seniors will embrace what must be with as much grace. Already we have seen the adoption of a new members’ council. In July eighteen members were nominated to serve on that council and the membership met to vote and elect twelve representatives. Two of those members attend meetings of the governing board. Although it was a major adjustment it appears to be working. We ended our fiscal year in June reporting a loss of more than $120,000 for the year, more than $10,000 in the “red” monthly. We began in January to make the adjustments that needed to be made in order to have a balanced budget for this year. Some of those adjustments were not well received, but they had to be made in order to keep our center open. Now contributors can support us with confidence that we are closely managing every dollar and in so doing exercising proper stewardship over and appreciation for every contribution to the Center. I am pleased to report that for the months of July and August we operated slightly in the “black” and have accomplished a major turnaround in our finances. Thanks again to our supporters! Our future will rely more on volunteers than ever. We are desperately in need of volunteers for our fund raising Bingo games and for MealsOn-Wheels Drivers. Most volunteer positions are very flexible. They can be part time and they can be intermittent when two or more people share a single task. Come see us. Volunteering can be very rewarding and may add new meaning to your life. You will be helping a very worthwhile cause here at the center and the entire community will appreciate your effort. Movies will be coming back soon. Now that the senior center branch library is in place we will be bringing back an old tradition of showing movies at the center. We will be surveying our patrons this month to see how many are interested and what the best times would be. Having the library here now enables us to show movies which were banned for some time due to regulatory restraints that do not apply to libraries.

Advance Directives: planning for the future
Most people put off telling their loved ones what their wishes are for many reasons: maybe they think they have plenty of time; maybe their fear, anxiety, or denial of talking about their final days prevents them from talking to their loved ones about it; or, maybe they just think it would be too hard for their loved ones to talk about. It is never easy to think or even talk about one’s final days. But planning for your future healthcare needs is one of the most important things you will ever do for yourself and your loved ones. When that day finally comes, and it may come sooner than we think, your loved ones will not be left with the unanswered question of “What would they have wanted?” The best way to communicate your final wishes is through advance directives. They give you the power to determine what happens to you, especially when you cannot speak for yourself. They give your family and friends piece of mind to follow your wishes and it helps both you and your loved ones through those difficult times. Two types of advance directives: a living will and a healthcare power of attorney. What is a Living Will? A living will is a written document where you state your preferences for medical treatment at the end-of-life if you cannot speak for yourself. It allows you to state whether you want to accept or refuse certain treatments that prolong life, such as the use of certain drugs or technology, (for example a ventilator). A living will is protected by state and federal laws. Each state’s laws are different so you want to complete the documents recognized by your state. What is a Healthcare Power of Attorney? A healthcare power of attorney is a document that allows you to appoint someone you trust to make decisions for you regarding medical treatment and other personal care issues. It is only used when you cannot make the decisions yourself. A healthcare power of attorney is not the same as a durable power of attorney one uses for financial decisions, but only pertains to your medical needs. You do not need an attorney to obtain advance directives. You can obtain advance directives from several places. Your doctor, hospital, or long-term care facility should have them. You can also go online to Caring Connections at www.caringinfo.org and download your state’s advance directives and instructions. (Article submitted by Klamath Hospice, Inc.)

When I become a Senior Citizen By Beverly Hunter Aper
I shall wear a fancy hat with a big feather, gold gloves, and carry a big purse that hides my meds. I’ll wear lace hose and pointed shoes that make me look taller to hide all the height I’ve lost as I aged. I will wear strapless dresses and a fur shawl, made from my old coat, with cathedral earrings, and rows of pearls around my neck. Of course I’ll wear bangles around my wrists, and my sparkly dime-store rings to grace my fingers.
Then I’ll go to the Senior Center and dance with all the widowers, and make the widows present jealous. I’ll stop at the liquor store on the way home, and buy Irish Creme in a dark bottle, and tell people it’s red wine for health purposes. I’ll order a pizza with everything and tell my doctor I can’t understand why my cholesterol level is up. Then I’ll put on my silkiest night gown, and my poodle and I will sit in my recliner to watch the news.
Seasons By Dotte Shaffer
There! Another one. A strand of white against the dark background of the original. Not unlike a light snowfall covering the brown earth of summer. Gray hair. I have at least a dozen now and as with the first snow of the season, I embrace these signs which make me aware of my own approaching winter, with mixed emotions. I like the changing seasons. They reflect so clearly a person’s life. The spring of early childhood; everything new and waiting to be discovered. The summer of early adulthood; basking in the warmth of knowing it all and knowing nothing at all.
I’ll be surprised when I wake up and the “good morning” show is on, and my poodle wants to go for a walk. I’ll put my velvet robe over my nightgown, put on my velvet slippers, comb my hair, and we’ll walk right down the sidewalk like the Queen of Sheba walking her pet. I really don’t care if people stop and stare, I have lived long enough to earn the title of being “eccentric.” Those are the things I will do when I become A “Senior Citizen”!
The fall of maturity; relaxing in the knowledge that it’s not necessary to know it all. And finally, the Winter; a summing up of what has gone on before. Accepting, hopefully, the fact that what is done, is done and Spring is just around the corner. One can’t remain forever in Spring, delightful though it may be. However, one should hold on to the memory of Spring, if only to lighten the sometimes dark days of Winter. Summer, filled with so many frustrations and confusions, would not be a good place to remain for very long. One may never find peace of mind and cintentment there. Fall would be a nice time to linger; a time for contemplation and apperciation. Still, there is Winter awaiting us and beyond that, another Spring. Always another Spring.

CRAFTY NEWS from CRAFTY LaDEES
Recently the Klamath County Pop Warner Henley Jr. High School cheerleaders approached our LaDEES to help with a project for their “Stringer” (13-14 year olds) and “Beavers” (8-10 year olds) cheerleaders. For this project, they wanted 650 pairs of knit gloves with pompoms at the end of each finger. This was a fund raiser for them with the proceeds going to the purchase of cold\ weather warm-ups of the cheerleaders. Two of KBSSC LaDEES helped out on this project, Mikal Southby and Wava Weiskopf, who worked in the ‘spare’ time to help accomplish this goal. These LaDEES were able to complete adding pom-poms to 88 pairs of gloves!-for these young ladies. THANKS to the Henley Jr. High cheerleaders! We appreciative your help from your food drive to benefit the congregate and Meals on Wheels programs at the KBSCC.
COMING SOON!! Get ready! Get set! Get your crafty items finished and ready to go!.
KBSCC Annual Craft Fair More details in next months edition! Looking forward to seeing and meeting everyone in 2012 - Wava Weiskopf, Manager, Crafty LaDEES
