Welcome
support has become more important than ever since the implementation of the cut back in Federal Funding know as sequestration.
Since my first greeting letter early last year I have on several occasions discussed here the transitioning of the Klamath Basin Senior Citizens’ Council, Inc. from one organization to two. The entire time we have worked diligently to achieve this goal and the final step has now been completed with a contract for services successfully negotiated between the two. A new board was appointed in April Marc Kane, Center Director to serve what is now called Klamath Lake Counties Council On Aging (KLCCOA). They are the funding agents for the Older Americans Act and have an office located at 700 Main Street in Klamath Falls.
Funding cut backs haven’t stopped us from being vital and active in responding to local needs. Take a look at look at all the activities we offer on page 8. Support us by participating in programs and offering your support whenever you can. It is very much appreciated.
The Senior Center remains in its present location at 2045 Arthur and continues to provide many of the services it has in the past under the contract with KLCCOA. Here’s a breakdown of what services have been assigned to each of the two groups. The Senior Center continues to provide congregate and home delivered meals, transportation services, disease prevention and health promotion services, elder abuse awareness and prevention services, and information and assistance services all under contract with the KLCCOA. In addition the Senior Center provides SHIBA Medical Insurance Counseling and many opportunities for social and educational services in partnership with other local clubs and organizations. For more information the Senior Center can be reached at 541-883-7171. The following programs are now delivered directly by KLCCOA. They are Outreach services, legal assistance, Oregon Project Independence, the Chore and Friendly Visitors Program, Caregivers Support Program and Information and Referral services. Call KLCCOA at 541-205-5400 for more information. Although all the changes along the way to this now completed transition of services were a bit of a struggle for many, we can now look back with a great deal of pride knowing we stood up to the task and made it happen. My personal thanks to all involved in both agencies and also to the Central Oregon Council On Aging (COCOA) which has assisted and is now helping to manage the new Klamath Lake Council On Aging. We will be celebrating this month with a joint social meeting for both boards of directors and their administrators. The Older Americans Act was designed to provide initial funding for services, generally about a third or less of the necessary funding, while the balance is raised by providers in a fashion unique to each community. Here in Klamath Falls we rely heavily on the United Way Fund and encourage participation in their campaign. In addition we rely on grants and donations to make up the balance of funding that is necessary. Local

Klamath Animal Shelter Introduces the Silver Star Seniors Program
He wasn’t that excited about getting a cat again at this stage of his life, so she went to the shelter by herself and came back with not just one, but two kittens. Now, a year later, Punkie (the clown) and Mimsi (the princess) are clearly his, competing for their favorite spot in the house: his lap. His wife says, “The two little pets have brought so much fun and entertainment to our home and have rekindled a sense of playfulness in my husband that I feared had gone for good. He just can’t resist their attention.” Punkie and Mimsi have not only lifted his spirits, but likely they are improving his health. Recently the American Heart Association (AHA) issued a scientific statement saying owning a pet may help to decrease a person’s risk of suffering from heart disease and is linked with lower levels of obesity, blood pressure and cholesterol. Research has shown that the companionship and love pets offer can reduce stress, anxiety, depression and loneliness in their owners and increase their sense of well-being and self esteem. Pets can be particularly helpful for someone who lives alone or does not have frequent contact with others. Klamath Animal Shelter wants to help seniors bring a pet into their lives. It has started a Silver Star for Seniors program to encourage local seniors to adopt a cat or dog. In this new program, some pets will be discounted for seniors who visit the shelter. A silver star on the kennel card will identify the special senior pet.

Roy Rizkovsky Introducing - The Tuesday Night DJ and Dance
My name is Roy Rizkovsky, I'm retired from a couple of professional fields, Engineering and Aviation. Country Music & Country Dancing is one of my many fun hobbies. I've been involved in Country dance for a number of years off and on depending upon what else is going on in my life. I've danced in competition as little as 4 months ago in the Tucson, Arizona Country Cactus Classic, doing very well in the intermediate levels of, Cha-Cha, Salsa, East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing and Progressive 2 Step with top honors in 3 of the 5 dances. I'm hosting this Tuesday Country Night Social Dance at the Senior Center mostly for us older generation. It will offer an alternative to other venues in town that play loud and high tempo types of music, leaving us older folks with-out a place to dance in the evenings. I will be playing country music from my music book of about 2000 songs. Folks will be able to request a song for me to play, from a Slow 2 Step Country to East Coast Swings and pretty much everything in between. Music won't be loud or obnoxious. If you would like to learn a country dance, I can help. I'm not a professional dance instructor, but for the most part I can help with most of the country dances, like a very simple easy country rhythm 2 step to more intermediate level of country dances. Come And Have Some Evening Dance Fun With Us, Tuesdays starting October 22nd at the Senior Center.
OUR CARE SPEAKS FOR ITSELF

HAPPY HALLOWEEN By Sharon Hudson Halloween is a spooky and Fun time of year Some children dress spooky And try to instill fear Others can be funny and Some are quite cute It all ends up with lots Of candy for loot We use our imagination and Dress up for fun Adults get into it too, have Parties and get their hair done The JACK O LANTERN is the Symbol of the night They are carved in many ways With a candle inside for light Some are happy and some Of them are scary Some are sad, and some You can carry I hope you have a good one And don’t get tricked Treats are better and Lollipops can be licked
The Prairie Wife By Vaudine Cullins She was actually young But appeared to be old Her life had been harsh And lonesome, I’m told The heat and the dust Had taken its toll On this hardworking woman Both body and soul She longed to be free Where the landscape was lush Where soft rains and breezes Inspired a sweet hush But the ceaseless winds Had devoured her youth And destroyed all her dreams Now she’s facing the truth She’ll never escape At least in this life The hardship of being A lonely Prairie Wife

Donor Information Donations Take A Fall During August Senior Center Appeals for More Help. If you follow our paper each month you know that we regularly report all donations made to the Senior Center to acknowledge and express our appreciation. You might also notice that our August donations fell sharply from previous months at a time when we most need more assistance. Nearly all government sources of funding have dropped significantly this year and communities will need to find funding in other places. If you participate in the United Way Campaign either through your employer or individually please make an extra effort this year. The Senior Center receives a generous amount of support from United Way. United Way supports 19 different agencies all meeting critical community supports needs and The Senior Center is proud to be among the nineteen. Although the Meals-On-Wheels program garners more support than any other program at the Center there are many other programs provided through the Center that fulfill many needs other than nutrition. Take a look at our activity schedule on page 8 and you will see there is something at the Center for nearly everyone. Exercise programs such as Body Recall and Tai Chi occur twice a day. Social and gaming activities such as Bingo, Cards, Pool, Crafting Opportunities are always on the schedule. Educational classes are scheduled as requested such as Creative Writing and Computer Skills classes. There are five computers available at the Center for seniors to stay connected. Support groups and services happen here such as The Senior Veterans Social Club on Thursdays and a SHIBA program (Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance). On Wednesday afternoons there is a dance group that meets at the Center with live music and on Fridays there is a Tap Dancing Group open for new members. And yes, you can get a meal at the Center every weekday while you are here and use our transportation services to get back and forth. Needless to say there is a lot to do at the Senior Center and we are striving to develop new programs that appeal to today’s active seniors. All these activities rely on your donations and support. We hope you will take notice and support the senior community.

Healthy Snacks On The Go Article submitted by Klamath Hospice
In today’s “hurry and go” society, it is easy to make unhealthy food choices. Here are some ideas for quick and healthy snacks from the American Cancer Society. • String cheese or cheese cubes and whole-grain crackers • Hummus and whole-wheat pita bread • Carrots, bell pepper strips and celery sticks • Edamame (soy beans) and sweet cherry tomatoes • Whole fruit or fruit slices (dip in lemon juice to prevent browning) • Trail mix made with cereals, nuts, pretzels, dried fruit or raisins • Individual serving-sized packages of low-fat, low-sugar yogurt (look for no more then 20 grams of sugar per 6 ounces) • Popcorn without added salt or butter
