Welcome Summer will soon be coming to an end, the days will be cooler and we’ll relish all the colors that Fall will bring as leaves begin to fly. We’ll be doing all that we can here at the Senior Center to offer activities and social events to Seniors as we all seek shelter from the weather. Please keep your newsletter handy throughout the month as you will find our activities Marc Kane, Center Director list on page 8 and the menu for the month on the back page. This issue also has articles on health and exercise submitted by a local physician, Holly Montjoy MD, and from Klamath Hospice. We are thankful to many partners that make this publication possible. The Center is especially thankful to all those that advertise in our newsletter and encourage others to consider this publication for your advertising. The Herald and News manages all the advertising for this publication as well as all the design and graphics, layout work and more. A special thanks to Saffron Owen at the Herald and News who puts it all together. The Senior Center provides content, but Saffron makes it attractive and appealing. There is no cost to the Senior Center for all these services and it is a big plus for the Center to have such an attractive piece. We are now delivering extra copies to local establishments such as the Green Blade Bakery, Klamath Grill, Mermaid Garden Cafe, and the Daily Bagel. If you would like your business included please call and we will bring some issues by for your customers. There are so many ways the Senior Center receives support from our community, and for all of them those of us at the Center are thankful.

United Way is kicking off their campaign this month hoping to raise over $700,000 for numerous community agencies including the Senior Center. You can trust that all these community service agencies do their best to collaborate and use your donation in the most efficient and effective way. Your support to United Way is also support for the Seniors at our Center. Do you remember when we used to call it United Good Neighbors and we would pass an envelope around each neighborhood block? If you do you will likely find something of interest at the Senior Center to help you remain connected to your community. Today we rely primarily on payroll deductions from employees at all the businesses and organizations. Please make sure your payroll department has your pledge.

The Senior Center has ample need and opportunities for volunteers. We manage a large number of volunteers, over 180, but

there is always a place for another citizen wanting to give back to the community. Even if it may be only an hour a week we have a place for you and are happy to have you. Opportunities remain open to serve on some of our board advisory committees.

Come talk to us! We are eager to hear your suggestions for the Senior Center and its future. Join Us! We Celebrate Life! Marc Kane, Executive Director

Being admitted to the hospital: the process explained

Being admitted to the hospital can be a very frightening experience for anyone. Usually there are many other patients also being admitted, the nurses are very busy trying to help everyone, and the physicians are equally as engaged in the care of several people at any given moment. This can lead to patients and families feeling overwhelmed and confused. However, there is a process for being admitted to the hospital and thereafter. The purpose of this article is to define that process along with key personnel present during one’s hospital stay. 1. Getting to the hospital. Being admitted to the hospital means that the patient will be staying at least overnight and, as long as there are beds available, will be transitioned to a dedicated room upstairs. We often call this “moving to the floor.” Patients may come to be in the hospital by several routes: at the urging of a primary provider, via selfmotivated or family motivated visit to the emergency room, or by ambulance. 2. To stay or not to stay. A physician, usually the emergency room provider, will decide if the patient needs to stay overnight or longer. If the patient is being admitted directly from the patient’s primary care provider’s (PCP) office then he/she may not need to go through the emergency department and this is up to the patient’s PCP. When the decision is made this information is relayed to the admitting physician. 3. What next? This is the part that is often times confusing to patients. If your primary care provider sees patients in the

OUR CARE SPEAKS FOR ITSELF

541.882.1636 www.HighDesertHospice.com Nurse Owned and Operated

hospital then he/she is responsible for doing the paperwork required to get the patient a room. In this case, the patient’s PCP will see the patient daily and manage their care during their hospital stay. At Sky Lakes Medical Center if one’s PCP does not usually see patients while they’re in the hospital then the patient is admitted by the resident medical team and/or a hospitalist. Thereafter, the patient will be followed by the resident service or a hospitalist during their stay. 4. Who are these people? The resident medical team is made up of an upper-level resident and a junior resident participating in the OHSU rural family medicine program at Cascades East Family Practice. In addition, these residents are directly supervised by either the faculty in the same program or a hospitalist. A hospitalist is a physician who is dedicated to the care of patients during their hospital stay and primarily focuses on issues that arise during hospitalization. A representative from one of the medical teams or the patient’s PCP will see the patient every day. The admission process is scary and there are a lot of components to getting one up to appropriate medical floor. It often takes a significant amount of time and energy. There is a process that we, as physicians, follow to ensure patient safety and some aspects of your care may be different depending on how you originally came to be at the hospital. Everyone - the doctors, nurses, assistants - are all on the same team. We all want the patient to do well. If you ever feel confused or out-ofthe-loop request to speak to the nurse and/or physician caring for you. Our patients are our first priority!

Make Exercise Part of Your Everyday Life

Many of us have a million excuses as to why we don’t exercise regularly. Few of us have integrated exercise into our daily lives. As we know, the health benefits are numerous, including: • Easing stress and anxiety • Lifting your mood • Sharpening brainpower • Improving self-esteem • Boosting energy levels Here are some easy tips to guide you in integrating exercise into your daily life. • Move more in your daily life (garden, go for a short walk after dinner, take a beloved pet for a stroll…..) • Start slowly - a little is better than nothing • Make exercise something fun - try dance, yoga, make a deal that while you watch your favorite TV program you are on the treadmill or stationary bike, workout with a buddy and then enjoy a coffee date afterwards • Stay motivated - set goals for yourself, be consistent, keep records of your progress, mix up your workouts to keep your interest level high, get inspired perhaps by a friend, co-worker or family member Special considerations before you begin: • Get clearance from your primary care physician. • Remember to stretch, no matter what exercise you participate in. • Ensure that you drink plenty of water. Poet ’s Corner CORRECTION: Back in March we published a poem by Gordon Ross, The Border. Unfortunately an entire stanza was omitted so we are republishing today with an apology to Gordon. Hope to see more from you Gordon.

THE BORDER By Gordon Ross for my new Great Granddaughter Come with me to the border Where now only I must cross Walk with me to the border Where unseen fortunes toss And talk with me to the border Where unfelt breezes blow What fate awaits at the border No traveler like me can know It’s said all must cross the border Each in his and her own time And how each gets to their border Is not the purpose of this rhyme There’s help to cross the border Forget the sadness, do not mourn I look forward to crossing there For today’s when I get born!

Expressions of Heart and Mind

Please submit something for us to consider printing in our next issue. Submittals should be sent to the attention of Marc Kane, Executive Director, Klamath Basin Senior Citizens Center.

THANK YOU FIRE FIGHTERS By Sharon Hudson

LIFE’S WINDOW By Vaudine Cullins

Thank you fire fighters For what you do I want you to know that I appreciate you!

Sitting by the window Watching robins fly Resting in my rocking chair As precious time goes by

You work so hard to Clear the air When some irresponsible person Shows they just don’t care A spark from a cigarette or campfire Will take its toll It’ll start a fire that Burns out of control Lightening can also start A raging blaze Then all of the country side Gets put in a haze It destroys our forests And the wildlife in it You come to the rescue And you just don’t quit It seems God sends the rain When we can’t take anymore It puts out the flames And thunder will roar So please keep up the good work And don’t let us down We will be happy to see you When you return to town

Too old to make a difference Too tired to have a plan Aware that God has blessed me So I do the best I can I’m thankful for my family And the friendships that I’ve made So I’ll focus on the lights of life Till that light begins to fade The journey’s been a good one But the path somehow seems short I guess the time just went to fast As my ship pulls into port

NOTICE: CREATIVE WRITING CLASS Looking for Support for Fall Creative Writing Class. Last year our creative writing class was oversubscribed so we would like to have another. It was a very successful program for us and reportedly a very meaningful experience for those who participated. We hope to raise $500 this next month to support another class. If you would like to help out please do. If you would like to sign up for a class let us know that as well. See the receptionist at the Senior Center.

Poet ’s Corner Cont. I’M A GRANDMA’S GIRL By Sharon Hudson

She taught me responsibility And to keep my word The Golden Rule is something I have always heard

She taught me to pray and Be thankful for a meal To appreciate what I have And to never steal

I love my dad and he Always loves me He is the best dad for me Unconditionally!

I’m a Grandma’s girl Straight from the heart I’ve known this feeling Right from the start

She taught me dignity And self reliance Together we have bonded And formed an alliance

Though sometimes I know I’m hard on her She forgives me and before I know it, her roar is a purr

At the end of the day When the work is through I think of grandma and wonder If she was a grandma’s girl too

She saved my life and Showed me the good Taught me lessons that No one else could

I have her love and Respect for the earth Animals and nature have Their own self worth

I miss my dad, he’s my Grandma’s oldest son He works many hours, but When he is home we have fun

She took me away from My mother’s torment Put me in a better light I think she was God sent

We go on picnics and Campouts too Get lots of fresh air And enjoy the view

He takes me on Saturday And we do what we like We go to the movie Or take a long hike
