The Legacy Continues By Chris Howard

N

ot all battles are won or lost on a battlefield. Some battles come from within us. When we lose this battle, our loved ones push forward in our honor… Christina and her husband Doug both grew up with fathers that served America proudly in the US military. Not long after they met, they soon realized the passions they shared to honor veterans and soon became part of group of people who strive to do so. Throughout their time together, they organized and participated in many community projects and events. As they became more involved in the community, they realized that something was missing. Unity, unity among the residents and organizations in Klamath Falls who put forth effort to provide Klamath Falls with events like the 4th of July Parade and Firework show. They both realized that just being involved as members wasn’t enough. When they founded the Klamath Freedom Celebration in 2010, Christina, or “Pinky” as her biker family called her, stood tall in efforts to build community events.. Her passion sparked a fire in people to get involved. She rarely took “NO” for an answer when it came to supporting the causes she was passionate about. Occasionally, this 5 ft. tall, 100% Portuguese woman could be more intimidating than her 6ft tall biker husband, Doug. But it all boiled down to the fact that Christina was a true “All American Girl” who believed in Traditions and Patriotism learned as a child. Christina served in many civic organizations, including the Klamath County Chamber of Commerce, and the VFW Women’s Auxiliary, serving as president twice. From a waitress in the hospitality industry she would eventually earn the title of General Manager of several motel properties. Soon Christina and Doug would learn that they would be facing a fierce and deadly adversary. Christina was diagnosed with Breast Cancer.

She became determined not to let this disease beat her and continued on doing what she loved. Especially after losing her father, mother, step father, and many friends to it, she vowed that after she beat cancer, she would use her inspiration and unwavering strength to advocate and help others through the same fight. Many days were spent at the Cancer Treatment Center enduring treatments with the ups and downs, pain, and exhaustion that accompanied. She fought, and fought hard with her husband Doug by her side all while using all of her strength to inspire other cancer patients to fight as well. Most of all she fought hard to keep hope for her and especially Doug. Even with all of the hard work by the staff at the Cancer Treatment Center, and especially Christina’s brave efforts, the cancer proved to be too much. With Doug by her side, she was taken by the disease on March 3rd, 2016. Although she is no longer with us, her heartbeat marches on and she continues the fight with us in spirit. Doug, along with all of her friends and family will continue to battle on to help raise money and awareness to fight cancer along with other efforts that represent Chris’s Causes. Klamath Freedom Days is dedicated to Christina Brown, our great friend Steve Doty (founder of the American Veterans Traveling Tribute AVTT), and so many others that have lost their battle to Cancer while carrying our American Flag proudly. We have a motto: Honor ~ Respect ~ Remembrance.

“She wanted, after beating cancer, to be an advocate, to help others through the fight. Now that is my job, my vow, and I will continue for her, until God sees fit to let me retire and join my one and only in Heaven.” Doug Brown Co-founder Klamath Freedom Celebration
