Gaze at the stars… and travel through space
If you’re looking for a new activity this summer why not lift your eyes to the heavens and gaze at the myriad stars, meteors, comets and planets sparkling in the night sky!
locate stars, planets and constellations. A good pair of binoculars is also a good idea. But before going to the expense of buying a telescope, make sure that your new interest is a lasting one.
How to get started... Before being able to contemplate all the wonders the sky has to offer you, a few preparations will be necessary. First of all, star gazing is never very satisfactory unless the skies are clear so checking the weather forecast is always a good idea. It’s also better to find a place without too much light pollution; you’ll be able to see many more stars and they’ll seem much brighter away from the dazzling lights of a city or town.
What can you see? There are quite a few constellations visible in the night sky during the months of July, August and September. The Big Dipper, Cassiopeia, Hercules, Delphinus and Draco are just a few. The Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxy are especially visible at this time of year, as are bright stars such as Polaris, Arcturus and Vega and the planets Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and Mars.
Having a sky chart will enable you to

Moreover, every year between August 10 and 15, the skies are alight with shooting stars: the Perseids. This brilliant but short-lived meteor shower is the result of the entry into earth’s atmosphere of debris left by the passage of the 109P/Swift-Tuttle comet. The majority of these meteors are visible in the Perseus constellation from which they take their name.

The benefits of the black bear hunt Bear hunting is a popular activity, and the challenges it offers ensure that it has many devoted fans. Add to that the fact that black bear meat is highly prized by many wild game lovers, and the need to better develop the black bear hunt becomes clear. The black bear hunt can also help to limit the problems of depredation. Depredation refers to the damage caused by animals to human property or infrastructure. The problem of depredation by black bears occurs mainly when food in the forests becomes scarce, such as during a season when berries are scarce. At such times, bear encroachment into human settlements is more common, as they search out other food sources, including cornfields, orchards, public landfills, bird feeders, and trash containers.
In cases of depredation, wildlife authorities must act quickly to ensure that bears do not associate humans with easily accessible food; to allow that would mean the bears could lose their natural fear of humans. When that happens, the bears quickly become problematic and drastic solutions have to be taken, such as relocation or even slaughter. Relocation is often considered to be an ineffective measure because many bears transported to another location try and return to their starting point. These bear relocations also require a lot of human and financial resources. This type of situation illustrates that hunting, when managed effectively and sustainably, remains an important tool for our society in controlling animal populations. Hunting helps to maintain bear populations at acceptable levels, enabling the animals to find sufficient food sources in their natural habitats.

Hunting and camping near water sources Much of eastern Oregon has little water. As a result of this, livestock and wildlife often are dependent on artificial water sources. Additionally Oregon can experience periodic and sometimes severe drought conditions that impact both natural and artificial water sources. Drought can cause difficulties for livestock and wildlife. When some water sources dry up many animals may be forced to migrate long distances to water. This water can either be permanent streams or springs or artificial sites like guzzlers and livestock water cisterns. Drought impacts of reduced food and water are hardest on the young and the females trying to raise them.
• Avoid camping at or near waterholes, springs, guzzlers, and other sources of water for wildlife and livestock. • Livestock are constrained by fences and do not have the option of moving to alternative water sources. • Avoid hunting over water sources when that activity keeps livestock and wildlife that waters during daylight hours from obtaining essential water. • Never alter or plug water sources to prevent livestock or wildlife from gaining access to water. • Remember that in many areas livestock producers have to haul water for their livestock, so don’t do anything that would prevent animals from reaching that water. • More information can be found at the ODFW wedsite “Drought and Fire Information Page” (www.dfw.or.us)
Camping and leaving personal property on public lands Regulations for public use of public lands vary from area to area. It is the responsibility of each individual to know the rules and regulations which govern public land use in the area they are using. In general, individuals are not allowed to camp or leave personal property or structures such as tree stands on public lands (including BLM or US forest Service lands) for more than 14 days. However, some areas are closed to camping or may have different stay limits. Hunters should contact the responsible land management agency prior to installing any cameras, tree stands or other personal property.

Transport Your Taste Buds With Duck Tacos Here’s an easy, delicious dinner idea from chef Sara Moulton that uses duck as the key ingredient in tacos. This updated take on tacos can make family taco night more fun and flavorful with shredded duck meat, making it an easy way to enjoy the luxurious taste of duck any night of the week.
Make the fillings and toppings: Shred enough duck meat to yield 21⁄2 cups. Heat the oil in a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the duck and spice blend and stir to combine. Stir in the water and cook, covered, for 3 minutes, stirring frequently. Divide the filling among the taco shells. Add refried beans if you like. Top with the lettuce and tomatoes, and sprinkle with cheese. Spoon on the salsa and sour cream, if desired. Serve immediately. Note: In a pinch, substitute about 1 tablespoon of your favorite packaged chicken taco seasoning mix for the spice blend.
Duck Tacos
Why Duck?
(NAPS)—Some may be surprised to learn that duck and Mexican-style dishes pair well together. In fact, both domestic and wild duck have been used in Mexican cuisine for centuries.
Farm-raised White Pekin duck has a mild flavor that adapts to a variety of cuisines and is a delicious alternative to beef and chicken. Aside from the great taste, fully cooked duck products like roast half duck from Maple Leaf Farms save time in the kitchen. It’s already perfectly roasted, so if you’re shy about cooking duck, precooked duck products are the way to go.
recipe by Celebrity Chef Sara Moulton Serves 6

“It’s tasty and it’s good to go. If you don’t want to eat it heated, straight up, you can shred it and use it in any number of recipes—sandwiches, soups, salads, etc.,” says celebrity chef Sara Moulton, host of “Sara’s Weeknight Meals,” which is sponsored by Maple Leaf Farms.

The Outdoor Foundation reports that roughly 40 million Americans go camping in a given year. Typical campers go on five camping trips per year, traveling an average of 191 miles from their home to the campground. Campers include friends on their trips 70 percent of the time, and hiking is the most popular camping trip activity. Camping is a popular activity, but many curious would-be campers do not know where to get started. It can be tempting to purchase all of the gear needed and trek out in the woods to give it a try. But if camping is not all you expected it to be, you have just made a costly investment in a lot of equipment you are unlikely to use again. Instead of jumping right in, first try to learn as much about camping as possible. Do your homework, learning about various camping styles and which ones you prefer. Does the idea of renting a recreational vehicle sound more inviting than sleeping in a tent? Would you prefer a campground with showers, toilets and other amenities or is roughing it in the great outdoors more appealing? Once prospective campers are able to find their camping path, they can explore all of the possibilities and give it a trial run. Test the waters There’s bound to be a camping enthusiast in your midst. Find a friend or family member who enjoys camping out
and find out if you can join him or her on his or her next trip. Take advantage of this person’s supplies (you may need to purchase nominal equipment, such as a backpack and sleeping bag) and expertise. Such trips can provide some firsthand experience, and friends can offer advice on the keys to successful camping. It is generally easier to learn the ropes from someone who has experience choosing campsites and pitching tents, and this person also can offer suggestions about gear. How rugged are you? The definition of camping varies from camper to camper. For some, camping must include sleeping on a bedroll strewn out under the stars, while others may appreciate a few more luxuries on their camping excursions, like the running water or equipment offered at a campsite or park. Still, others do not want to leave the perks of home at home, preferring the comfortable living of a recreational vehicle. Nothing can end a camping excursion more quickly than discomfort and not enjoying the experience. It is better to figure out in advance just how rough you want things to be. Rent before buying Rent camping equipment to test out the gear you have in mind. This will give you an idea of everything from the sizes of tents to the type of cookware you may need. Renting is a less expensive approach for those who plan to camp

If your first trip inspires a genuine love of camping, then you can purchase equipment. You can always begin with the basics and then expand as you find new gear that will enhance your camping experiences, asking camping enthusiasts and experts for recommendations on everything from gear to campsites and more. Pointers for beginners The first time you go camping on your own you will likely be a bit nervous. When looking for a campsite, find a level ground that is high up. You do not want to be rolling down a slope or find that the tide has come in and you’re now floating inside your tent. But choose a spot with a nearby water supply as well. You will need it for cooking and cleaning up. Water is heavy to carry, so you do not want to have to transport it too far. Never light a fire inside of your tent. Keep the fire for cooking and warmth away from sleeping quarters for safety’s sake. Carbon monoxide can build up quickly, even inside a ventilated tent. Never leave a campfire burning unattended.
good idea to have a way to get out of the hot sun. Overhanging tree limbs also may buffer the tent from rain.
Packsaddle Wood Pellets
Food storage is another factor to consider when camping. You will be outdoors where wild animals reside, and a campsite can attract anything from small rodents to larger predators. Food should always be stored in insulated coolers that are not easily opened. Keep the food away from the tent so that animals will not rummage through sleeping quarters for snacks. Store garbage off the ground and out of reach of many animals. Dispose of garbage properly, ideally in covered trash receptacles. Animals accustomed to campsite food may be more daring than you would otherwise expect, so do not feed wildlife and keep food and trash out of reach.

Hunting is spelled S-A-F-E-T-Y Hunting is an enjoyable, safe activity as long as some basic guidelines are followed. Here are a few safety recommendations from the experts. When hunting • Respect all safety standards and guidelines applying to the use of a firearm. • Always handle firearms as if they were loaded. • Be doubly careful when setting up or inspecting a hunting blind or tree stand. When climbing up and down, take extra care with your firearm. Use the safety straps and check the reliability of the fasteners. • Clearly identify your game before you shoot. • Ensure that the line of fire is safe. • Don’t put your finger on the trigger until you’re ready to fire. • Take a quick moment to breathe and calm your nervous system right after firing and before you climb down from the blind or tree stand to start looking for your game.
• Ensure that your firearms are unloaded and transport them in a safe manner. Lock them up at home or ensure that they are under your control at all times. • Always handle firearms as if they were loaded. • Allow yourself to appreciate the usefulness of hunting rules and safety guidelines, even if you think they cramp your style. The few hunting accidents that do occur are almost always attributed to the unsafe use of firearms and reckless use of hunting blinds. While some hunting regulations are aimed at protecting wildlife, many others are for the protection of hunters.

Bloodhounds: valuable tools for managing wildlife
PET CREMATION & MEMORIAL PRODUCTS • Keychains • Garden Stones • Jewelry • Memory Glass
The use of bloodhounds to find wounded big game during a hunt is a practice that has long been used in many countries. Their efficiency in searching out game makes bloodhounds an increasingly popular hunting tool here as well. Sports hunters have an obligation to use all the means at their disposal to recover their game. To this end, well-trained bloodhounds are without equal. These dogs are trained by their handlers to track wildlife and can smell out an injured animal whether blood is present or not.
Carry Your Pet’s Memories or Wear Them Close to Your Heart!
Many benefits The benefits of using dogs to search for downed or injured game are undeniable. Hunters who hire a bloodhound handler can find their game quickly, which is extremely useful in hot weather. Being able to recover their game soon after the shot means fresher meat.
Dogs also make it possible to find animals whose recovery would otherwise have been difficult. And by using a dog for this purpose, a hunter’s movements through the forest are reduced, ensuring that high traffic areas in the woods remain undisturbed for other hunters.

Non-Lead Ammunition Helps Wildlife Hunters have a long history of supporting and conserving Oregon’s wildlife. Continue that tradition by switching to non-lead ammunition. Non-lead ammunition is available for most rifles, handguns and shotguns. High performance non-lead bullets have the same stopping power as lead, but leave fewer bullet fragments that can be swallowed by scavengers and other wildlife. Switching to non-lead

ammunition means eagles, scavengers, other wildlife and humans will not be exposed to lead fragments in game meat.
CENTER Serving Klamath Basin for 42 Years
Lead can be harmful to wildlife and humans. A nationwide ban on lead shot for waterfowl hunting is credited with saving millions of ducks, geese and waterfowl from lead poisoning. Birds of prey, scavengers and other wildlife can be harmed by eating meat containing lead fragments.
