Wild turkeys: a great hunting story
Wild turkeys are well established in North America, and hunting is allowed in many American states. Wild turkeys are plump birds whose strong feet allow them to run up to 12 mph. Despite their weight, which can reach 22 lbs., they can fly short distances in order to perch. By alternating flying and gliding, they can cover just over a mile in the air. The male can be distinguished by its size, as it reaches up to twice the weight of a female, as well as by its iridescent plumage. Their heads and necks are bare of feathers. Males (and a few females) develop a “beard” on the chest—a tuft of

coarse hair-like strands that lengthens with age. Turkeys communicate through a variety of calls; they are used during reproduction, for raising the young, feeding, flocking together, and as warnings. The characteristic gobbling of the male is used to attract females and can be heard up to a mile away in calm weather. Females lay clutches of 10 to 12 eggs, and the poults hatch at the end of the spring. Many turkeys live in an agroforestry environment, which is typified by a patchwork of mixed forest, fields, prairies, and clearings. The strong branches of mature pine trees are advantageous to turkeys, either for perching overnight or escaping predators.

A few safety rules for fans of the Sea-Doo Personal watercraft, more commonly known as the Sea-Doo in Canada, have been making lots of waves over the last few years, especially among the younger crowd. This is an activity packed with thrills for some, but others wish that these enthusiasts would practice their sport with more courtesy and more respect for basic safety rules. It is possible to enjoy all the thrills of this sport without disturbing other boaters and local residents. Speeding across a lake or bay at full throttle and cutting in close to other boats is disruptive and dangerous behaviour. Reducing speed near the shore, a wharf or a swimming area is also a basic courtesy. The driver of a Sea-Doo must follow the laws and regulations which apply to all types of recreational boats powered by an engine. The Transport Canada Internet site
(www.tc.gc.ca) lists all the regulations concerning maritime safety.
Archery • Waterfowl Fishing
For your personal safety when riding your Sea-Doo, make sure you have the right equipment and that it is in good repair. Always wear a personal flotation device (life vest, life jacket, etc.). Apart from the compulsory equipment, an oar, a manual pump and a fire extinguisher can be very useful in emergencies. Lastly, never forget to check the weather forecast before leaving. A sudden storm can be very dangerous in the middle of a lake! If you take all these fundamentals into consideration, your Sea-Doo outings will be more enjoyable for you as well as for all those other people who share the water with you.

Birds are a part of our daily lives. We hear them singing at daybreak, in the town as well as in the country. Once you’re equipped with a good pair of binoculars and a field identification guide, give yourself the objective of identifying 50 or even 100 bird species over the course of the summer. North America has more than 700 different species of birds so you have lots of scope!
nification of 7x35 or 8x40, or 7x25 compact binoculars. A CD of bird songs will help you to distinguish between the different species. Always wear dark-coloured clothing when birding in the woods; you will blend into the surrounding environment and will be able to get closer to the birds. Insect repellent and waterproof boots complete the basic equipment of an ornithologist. And now you’re ready to set off in search of all those beautiful birds which add so much pleasure to our daily lives.
Start by discovering the various birds in your backyard and in neighbourhood parks. Any body of water is also a great place to spot different bird species such as waterfowl. Bird watching in other parts of the country will allow you to spot many diverse species which you wouldn’t see in your own area. A field guide to bird identification can be found in any good quality bookstore at a cost of about $30.00. Good birding binoculars come in either a regular format with a mag-

Hunting can be a very safe sport, even though it is practiced in the wild and involves the use of firearms. That is because good hunters know that accidents can be avoided by being vigilant and prudent at all times. And that includes respecting hunting regulations and safety procedures. Here are seven tips help you prepare for a safe hunting trip. • Ensure that you are physically fit. If you have a toothache or heart troubles, for example, consult your doctor or dentist before you head out. • Know your weapon and the manufacturer’s safe handling guidelines. • Ensure that your equipment is in a good state of repair. Make sure the following things are in order: all straps and fasteners are solid; the hunting blind is stable; all blades are sharpened; and gun sights are
adjusted. • Prepare a survival kit that includes these items: nutritious snacks; warm clothing and an emergency foil blanket; a flashlight or lantern; a compass or fully charged GPS; rain gear; first aid kit; tools to repair equipment; matches or lighter; and a whistle and cell phone to call for help (if you are within range of a network tower). • Update your knowledge of first aid. • Familiarize yourself with your hunting territory so you can navigate it if you get lost—prepare your maps and program your GPS. • Give a copy of your route and expected time of return to a person you trust. Respect your plan, because that person will be notifying the police if you don’t return when you said you would. Happy hunting!

Mentoring makes better hunters In recent years, mentoring has become an increasing trend in many different areas. Receiving coaching and guidance from a more experienced person can be hugely beneficial in the sports of hunting and fishing as well. Mentoring helps hunters and anglers develop practical skills and a better awareness of the finer aspects of their sport. It also helps ensure that there is a future for hunting and that there will be game available for future generations. Mentoring focuses on the transfer of knowledge. The essential need to plan with and for future generations of hunters and fishermen relies on the sharing of practical knowledge and hunting techniques. Passing on all the know-how gained by experience makes sure useful traditions don’t get lost. Passing on knowledge also has to include the ethics of

hunting, so that the public has a clearer understanding of its sustainability and usefulness.

Mentoring can only enrich the thrill of the hunt, providing newcomers the incentive to continue. Hunting with an experienced mentor lets newbies get familiar with the laws, safety guidelines, and values, but also with the finer skills of tracking, caring for weapons, navigating the wild, and choosing which targets are worthy game. Simply put, mentoring helps everybody become better, wiser hunters.

and carports. • No matter how hard it’s raining, never use a barbecue in a garage.
CSA Group, a leading certification and testing organization, offers these important tips for a safe, seamless summer soiree -- try saying that three times quickly!
Decorative lighting • It’s time to remove the holiday lights. These lights are designed to be temporary and can be a fire hazard if left out too long. • When installing decorative lighting on patios or along walkways, inspect the packaging and electrical cords to make sure that it’s certified and marked for use in an outdoor or wet location. • Turn off the electricity supply before the work begins and unplug lights when possible. • Carefully inspect lights and lamps to make sure there are no broken or cracked sockets or housings, and no bare or frayed wires.
Outdoor gas barbecues • Before firing up the grill for the first time, carefully inspect burners and burner tubes for blockages due to dirt, grease, insects or rust buildup. Clean or replace any blocked parts with certified replacement parts (or have a licensed technician do it). • Check for cracked, brittle or leaking hoses by applying a 50/50 solution of soap and water to hoses and fittings. Turn on the main gas or propane valve while leaving burners off. Any leaks will show up as bubbles. Replace any damaged hoses or fittings. • Propane cylinders must be inspected and re-qualified every 12 years in the United States. A date stamp on the cylinder indicates when it was last qualified. Do not use a rusty or damaged cylinder. If in doubt, replace your tank. • Keep grills and barbecues away from combustible materials such as fences, trees, buildings, awnings

Safety will make you a happy camper (MS) -- Ah, nature. Besides the mosquitoes, nothing says summer like a getaway to the great outdoors. As you wind down from the stress of packing up and driving to the cottage or campsite, the CSA Group, a leader in testing and certification, wants to remind you to stay safe on land and water this summer with these tips. Boats and Cottages • Always wear a personal flotation device and never consume alcohol while operating any vehicle. • Make sure that certified carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke alarms are properly installed outside all sleeping areas. • When opening your cottage for the season, carefully inspect all appliances and electrical cords for damage from rodents or insects. • Ensure boats and cottages are equipped with proper emergency safety equipment, including first aid kits and fire extinguishers. CO and Smoke Alarms • Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. To prevent CO poisoning, fuelburning equipment should only be used in well-ventilated areas. • Test each unit at least once a month because the threat doesn’t take a vacation. • Change the batteries at least twice a year. A good routine is to change them at the same time you reset your clocks for Daylight Saving Time.
