No further changes to NH4A alignment: Govt HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, NOV 9

Refusing to bow down to the demands of the National Highway Diversion Action Committee (NHDAC), the State government on Tuesday decided to go ahead with the widening of the NH4A based on the new alignment submitted by the high-level committee. While the government decided to go ahead with the alignment, the NHDAC decided to go ahead with its agitation against the project. The high-level committee appointed by the government which included legislators, PWD, National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and land survey officials brought down the number of demolitions for the NH4A widening from 569 to 168 by reducing the width to 35 meters and proposing bypasses wherever necessary. However, the re-alignment was not acceptable to the NHDAC which sighted that the highway will create noise pollution, cause vibrations which will damage existing structures.

KAMAT SPEAK: Majority are satisfied by the realignment. It’s basically become a political issue rather than anything else. Following this, the government invited the NHDAC for discussion, which was also attended by PWD and the NHAI officials at the Secretariat conference hall. H o w e v e r, t h e m e e t i n g seemed to have failed to reach any solution with the government finally deciding to go ahead with the new alignment

HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, NOV 9

Goa State Disaster Management Committee (GSDMC) has shortlisted four bidders for the final claim to salvage M V River Princess, which lies grounded off Candolim shore. The decision on the successful bidder will be taken on November 10. GSDMC, headed by Chief Secretary Sanjay Srivastava, met on Tuesday and finalised four bidders out of seven. The four bidders include – Titan Maritime (Sea) Pvt Ltd, Singapore; Madgavkar Salvage joint bid with Smith Salvage, Singapore; Resolve Salvage & Fire Europe Limited, UK; and Arihant Ship-breaking. The other three salvage companies, whose bids were rejected includes Salgaonkar Mining Industries Pvt Ltd; Jeisu Shipping Pvt Ltd and Al Fara

General Trading, Bahrain. The Committee member Agnelo Fernandes said that these three companies failed to compete technically. “Various aspects such as experience, type of job and other points were taken into consideration, while finalising the bidders,” he said.

Fernandes informed that the financial bid of the selected companies will be opened on Wednesday. The State government last month, had decided to float fresh tender for the removal of vessel, after SMIPL and River Princess Hatao Manch both withdrew their offers to remove the vessel for free, citing reasons that the performance guarantee of Rs 10 crore demanded by the government was too high. Similarly, the two final contenders for the job – Titan Salvage and Madgavkar Salvage, whose bids were to be considered by the government, did not comply with the tendering rules. The High Court, in its order on September 8 had directed the State government to commence the work of vessel removal within two months from the date.

Check the tiffin, not just canteen food! PTI NEW DELHI, NOV 9

Don’t just blame the canteen food for your child’s ill-health, the fault could also lie with the tiffin you are giving him every day. A survey conducted across 15 schools in Delhi and NCR region has concluded that unhealthy food brought in tiffins from home is to blame as much as the canteen food for the high incidence of lifestyle related and infectious diseases among school children. The study conducted by Swashrit, an NGO, among 10,000 school children says that most of the children felt extremely tired by the end of the day and could only jog for 15 minutes at a stretch. According to the survey, 50

per cent of the children who were interviewed said they eat eggs or pulses and nuts only once a week. Though 90 per cent of the kids got their tiffin from home, they would supplement it with canteen food. The preferred food items are burgers, kathi rolls, chowmein, chips and pizzas.

Dr Bhavna Barmi, senior clinical psychologist at the Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre who headed the survey said, “Obesity and diabetes are a growing concern among children and the real cause behind them needs to be understood. If school canteen sold junk food the tiffin that came from home

was no better. It had food that contained highly saturated fat. “Due to erratic lifestyle, parents have no time to give the correct diet to their children,” she said. As such, she insisted that child health policies should include introducing effective guidelines for schools in order to bring about good nutrition and hygienic habits among school children. Speaking in the same vein, Sanjeev Bagai, CEO, Batra Hospital and Research Centre underscored that developing and implementing effective guidelines for school administrators was necessary to assist them in having definite school health policies that will take into account all aspects including nutrition and physical exercise.
