Counting in West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Friday HERALD CORRESPONDENT NEW DELHI, MAY 10

With the last phase of the Assembly elections over in West Bengal, all eyes are set on the counting simultaneously on Friday for the new Assemblies in West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Barring Assam, all four Assemblies are certainly set to have change of guards. The Congress appears to be in a position of advantage. It appears all set to retain power in Assam and snatch it away from the Left Front in Kerala and get a big boost from a landslide ally Mamata Banerjee is expecting in West Bengal. It is, however, still not sure to retain hold in Puducherry union territory. The only State where a disappointment is in store for the Congress is Tamil Nadu where its ally DMK appears all set to lose power to the AIADMK of J Jayalalithaa who went to polls

in alliance with matinee idol Vijaykanth. Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, incharge of the Congress affairs in Tamil Nadu, however, is still not ready to concede defeat as he is counting on impact of Karunanidhi’s populist schemes of free television sets and rice at Rs 2 a kilo. Analysts say the Tarun Gogoiled government in Assam has come out relatively unblemished from its last tenure, gaining from its success in bringing almost all factions of the ULFA, barring the Paresh Baruah faction, on table for talks. It also had the advantage of the state witnessing the lowest ever violence in the last four years. In West Bengal, Mamata is boasting to stop the score of the ruling Left Front at double digit and ride on the popularity wave to take over as the chief minister. In the 294-member assembly in West Bengal CNN-IBN survey gives Trinamool Congress alliance 222 to 234 seats. It suggests that the Left Front government is heading for its worst-ever performance in three decades with the Front set to get only between 60 and 72 seats. In the 2006 elections, the Trinamool Congress-Congress alliance had only 40 seats while the Left parties had more than 230 seats.

as early as Thursday-Friday night,” an official said, adding a steep hike of up to Rs 3 per litre of petrol is on the cards. The government had freed petrol prices from its control last June, but state oil firms continue to be guided by informal advice from the government. The hike needed to take petrol prices to international parity is about Rs 8.50 per litre, but the entire burden will not be passed on to consumers in one go. “Oil companies will be asked to stagger the hike over a couple of months,” the official said. Reddy said the day EGoM meets on fuel prices, a separate Group of Ministers (GoM) that is vetting London-listed Vedanta Resources’ USD 9.6 billion acquisition of Cairn India, may also meet. “I think when the next date is fixed on that day itself we will deal with both questions – the question of under-recoveries of oil companies and the question of government approval to Cairn-Vedanta deal,” he said.

The apex court said it was constrained to say that a certain section of the subordinate judiciary is bringing the whole judiciary into disrepute by passing orders on extraneous considerations. “We do not wish to comment on the various allegations which are often made to us about what certain members of the subordinate judiciary are doing but we do want to say that these kind of malpractices have to be totally weeded out.
