Strongly disapproving of Jairam Ramesh’s remarks against Home Ministry, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Congress today reprimanded him even as the Opposition BJP demanded action against him for the “highly objectionable” comments. Apparently sensing trouble, Ramesh tried to clarify his statement in a letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi and the Prime Minister soon after his return this morning from Beijing where he made the comments but it failed to cut ice. Home Minister P Chidambaram had already written a strongly-worded letter to Singh, expressing unhappiness over the Cabinet colleague’s remarks that his ministry had “alarmist” approach towards Chinese invest-

ments and was putting “needless” restrictions on these. After receiving letters from Chidambaram and Ramesh, Singh spoke to Ramesh and told him that he should not have commented on functioning of other ministries. Singh told Ramesh that it was “advisable for Cabinet colleagues not to make comments on the functioning of other ministries, especially with regard to relationship with important neighbours like China,” PMO sources said. “There is no confusion in our policies towards China and we continue to strive for constructive engagement with Beijing,” Singh told Ramesh. The Environment Minister refused to comment when referred to the controversy created by his remarks. Ramesh, while talking in Beijing about the India-China warmth developed during the Copenhagen Summit on Climate Change, had suggested that the Home Ministr y needed to be “much more relaxed” in its approach to Chinese investments in India. He had said that the security establishment was putting “needless” restrictions on Chinese investments in India as “we are imagining demons where there are none”. The Home Ministry also snubbed Ramesh, saying, “It is wrong to say that the security establishment was biased against the Chinese companies. “Chinese companies
are already present in India in a big way. They are working in a variety of sectors, including in telecommunications sector. I don’t think there is any discrimination happening from the government’s side,” Home Secretary G K Pillai said. He said the government takes decision on foreign investments on a case-to-case basis. “So far as national security was concerned, our policy is to ensure that the national security is protected and in every case, irrespective of the foreign country involved,” Pillai said. Dubbing Ramesh’s utterances as “inappropriate”, Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said the party endorses pulling up of Ramesh by the Prime Minister. “The Prime Minister and the PMO have already clarified that it is not appreciated that any minister comments on other department or ministries, especially when they are on foreign soil,” he said giving the sense of party’s feeling over Ramesh’s remarks. “At the same time, we would like to add that even within the country, there should be no occasion to air differences about other ministries,” Singhvi said, while reminding the Environment Minister that “there are enough forums in the party and the government to express views.” While the government and the Congress did not indicate whether or not any punitive action would be taken against Ramesh, BJP said the Minister had lost moral right to continue and demanded action by the Prime Minister against him.

Claiming yet again he was exonerated by the Supreme Court in the power rebate case, former power minister and present Deputy Speaker, Mauvin Godinho, asserted the Central Bureau of Investigation should conduct custodial interrogation of Opposition Leader Manohar Parrikar for the alleged IFFI 2004 infrastructure scam. Addressing second press conference after the SC judgement in the power rebate case, Godinho made a demand for thorough CBI investigation in the IFFI 2004 scam holding Parrikar responsible for taking all decisions at that time. When journalists pressed for the deputy speaker’s comment on the core committee of IFFI 2004 that was also part of the decision-making body, he said all involved should be probed, but failed to name any person, in the committee. “If one reads my complaint it is very clear,” he said. Citing the Comptroller and Auditor General’s (CAG) report,

There was over inflation and bonuses paid that were not mentioned in the agreements, he maintained. When reminded that Chief Minister Kamat had given Parrikar a clean chit in the IFFI 2004 scam, he commented, “It was only reported in the media but the reality is different.” But when journalists pressed further for a clear-cut comment on whether Godinho felt that the core committee members, including Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, were to be blamed for the scam, he felt cornered and said “you people are trying to put words into my mouth.”

tion session. Out of the packed journalists, only 2-3 scribes posed one or two questions, which she answered with much ease and without any difficulty. Kareena wore a marooncoloured saree with silver borders displaying a diamond studded necklace around her neck.
During her presentation, Kareena remarked: “The necklace what I am wearing now belongs to the company for whom I am the brand ambassador. I have to remove it when this presentation gets over.” When a scribe asked her when she was planning to get married, she said “Nothing is decided as yet, but every one will be informed well in advance.” “The marriage is a blessed institution made publicly, committed to purity and faith. The purity is as pure as my favourite colour ‘white’,” Kareena replied when she was asked how she sees marriage personally. Kareena, who is down in Goa for the shoot of film Golmal-3 said: “I play a completely different role in this film, almost a hero role. I am a tomboy in the film, totally different than what I or any heroine in the past has ever played. Audience, this time will find me completely different.”
may lead a potential Labour-Liberal Democrats government. Among the contenders to take over as the next leader of the Labour party are David Miliband, Harriet Harman and Ed Balls. Brown’s dramatic announcement that he is stepping down as leader indicates that the talks between the Conservatives and
Scotland, Wales and smaller parties such as the Green Party. Brown said he has “no desire to stay in my position longer than is needed to ensure that the path to economic growth is secured” and the route is paved for political reform. He said he will ask his party to launch a leadership contest and will play no part in it - expecting a new leader to be in place around the time of the Labour conference in September. Earlier today, the deadlocked election in the UK appeared closer to resolution as Conservatives and Liberal Democrats reported “further progress” in talks to ink a deal to form a new government, amid fears that the political uncertainty could stoke market jitters.

For Bebo, it’s fun to live in Goa Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor said although weather is hot and humid in Goa, Goan people and food are warm and it’s a fun to live in Goa. She was interacting with media persons at Canacona on Monday, which was held to promote a brand of Jewellery of which she is the brand ambassador. “Goa is my second home. Due to my professional engagement I am living in this state now for the last one and half month,” said Kareena. “Meeting Goan press is something different then the usual interactions what we have in Mumbai very often,” she added. In a dramatic development, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said today he will step aside as leader of the Labour party and offered to help forge an alliance with the Liberal Democrats to form a ‘progressive’ government after the May 6 hung verdict. The Liberal Democrats party has been having intense negotiations with the Conservative party for the last four days, but it has now been revealed that it has also been exploring possibilities with the Labour party, with whom the party is ideologically closer than with the Conservatives. With Brown no longer leader of the Labour party, the process has been set in motion to elect a new leader of the party who
Liberal Democrats were not progressing as well as was being stated. Brown was seen as a barrier to the Liberal Democrats gravitating towards the Labour party. Speaking outside 10, Downing Street, Brown said the process of formal negotiations with the Liberal Democrats will now begin. His Cabinet was scheduled to meet later today to formulate a policy on the negotiations with the Liberal Democrats. Given the party position after the May 6 election, the Labour (258) and Liberal Democrats (57) together do not make a majority (326). A coalition between the two will need to enlist the support of MPs from Northern Ireland,
On power subsidy case, Godinho pointed out that it was Parrikar who had tabled his concern about the “grave anxiety in the minds of the entrepreneurs and industrialists due to failure of the Government to release 25% rebate on power consumption which was announced in 1991 and subsequently discontinued in 1995.” He said, “Records are clear. It was I who stopped power subsidy. The Rs 16-crore subsidy to industries was as per the 1991 notification and the same didn’t do any damage to the finances of the State.” He said it was Parrikar who was responsible for giving a subsidy to the tune of Rs 15 crore to Mormugao Steel alone when Kamat was the Power Minister. However, he observed all decisions were made by Parrikar. On a question whether he found the subsidy to Mormugao Steel dubious and whether he would demand for an inquiry into it, Godinho said, “Yes there was a dubious intent. I will do my homework on that and then come to you again.”

The National Investigating Agency (NIA) will invoke the provisions of the Act constituting the Agency to file its indictment in the Margao bomb blast case in the absence of a special court to try the sensational case. Sources in the know said the provision in the NIA Act empowers the investigating agency to file the indictment in the Sessions Court if there’s a delay in constituting a special court mandated by the Act. The NIA is weighing this option as the notification constituting a special court to try the Margao bomb blast case is yet to be issued till date, even as the 180 days custody of the four accused persons in the case ends by around May 17-18.
