The Centre has informed the Supreme Court that it has achieved a major breakthrough in black money trial since Switzerland and nine other countries have agreed to share information pertaining to secret bank accounts being operated by tax evaders and Hawala operators. The Centre in its affidavit filed in the Supreme Court on December 10 has submitted that the Indian government has signed a protocol with Swiss agencies on August 30 this year, under which Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) has been amended and now information can be shared with India. The DTAA provided protection to secret bank account holders as the foreign banks were not bound to reveal the details of the secret bank accounts. According to the petitioners,

Secret bank account holders have parked tonnes of black money in these tax havens. According to the petitioners, if the black money is brought back to India then every family in the country can get Rs 2.5 lakh. A bench comprising Justices B Sudershan Reddy and S S Nijjar while fixing January 14 as the next date of hearing, asked the government why even showcause notices issued to two persons, including Hassan Ali, have been kept in sealed covers.

While social groups and residents are cr ying hoarse against mega housing projects citing basic infrastructure in villages, it is reportedly learnt that a leading real-estate developer has launched a Rs 300-crore high-end project in Goa. According to Sunday’s web edition of The Economic Times, the project will be developed across 9.3 acres in the picturesque landscape of the State having 36 luxury villas. It is slated for completion in the next two to three years in a bid to grab a substantial share of the growing luxury real-estate market, the report states further. A statement made by Nitesh Estate’s Chief Operating Officer Ashwini Kumar mentions the project will be located on the banks of river Sal and the same was close to pristine white sandy beaches in South Goa.

Sending a message loud and clear to the Congress leadership not to take the NCP for granted, NCP MLA Mickky Pacheco has asserted that he and the party has the capacity to field candidates in all the 40 constituencies and form the next government if the Congress don’t want to have any truck with the Sharad Pawar-led party in Goa. In another development, president of the Goa unit of the NCP Prof Surendra Sirsat publicly declared at Betalbatim that the party’s national and State leadership would stand solidly behind Pacheco at all times. Addressing thousands of his supporters at the Betalbatim football grounds on Sunday on

the occasion of his birthday celebrations, Pacheco made it loud and clear that the NCP can go alone in the next hustings and form the government with the love and support of the Goan people. “If the Congress continues saying they will go alone in the coming polls, the NCP is also ready to go alone in the hustings. I have the capacity and if the NCP leadership is with me, we can field candidates in all the 40 seats and form the next government”, Pacheco thundered at the Betalbatim grounds amidst cheers from his supporters. A top Singaporean diplomat described India as “stupid”, saying the country was “half in, half out” of the ASEAN grouping, according to leaked US cables. Ten persons, including nine family members, were killed while six others were seriously injured when a Tavera SUV and a Goabound bus collided with each other along the Mumbai-Goa highway at Ratnagiri-Maharashtra in the wee hours of Sunday. According to reports, the mishap took place near Udhale village at about 4 am when the Tavera, driven by Suraj Jadhav (22), collided with the oncoming inter-state Volvo bus near Khed. Jadhav reportedly lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a sharp turn and hit the bus coming from the opposite direction. Nine members of the Khetle family from Ratnagiri as well as Jadhav were killed in the mishap. The bus driver M Fernandes (31) and five other passengers were injured in the mishap and were rushed to a nearby government hospital.
