Nitish blows hot over photo with Modi

MARADONA BACK IN A DIFFERENT ROLE

Snubs BJP leaders, cancels dinner PTI PATNA, JUNE 12

In a clear snub to its coalition partner, an angry Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today cancelled a dinner for the top brass of the BJP in disapproval of an advertisement featuring him with Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and another on Gujarat’s aid during the floods two years ago. There was bad blood between the two sides, which run a coalition Government for the last nearly five years, after Kumar attacked those who released an advertise-

turing him with Modi, about whom he was always uncomfortable as a political ally. The JD(U) leader, who has an eye on Muslim votes, has fashioned himself as a secular leader and in the past had avoided sharing any dais with Modi in Bihar. The dinner he had planned for the BJP leaders attending the National Executive became a casualty in the midst of a vitiated atmosphere and BJP leaders also expressing their reluctance to attend the dinner. A BJP leader, who declined to be identified, accused Nitish of “over reacting” by attacking Modi. “He is overreacting. This is not the way to treat your partner”. He said that opinion was building up against attending the dinner. Modi was one of the invitees to the dinner. Earlier, Kumar lashed out at Modi’s Government for its advertisement yesterday on its “liberal donation” to Bihar during the 2008 Kosi floods, saying it was “uncivilised” to talk about help given during times of tragedy. He also took strong exception to the use of his photo-

graph with that of Modi in another advertisement published in local dailies and said he would take legal action against those responsible for it. “The Gujarat Government’s claim (on flood relief) is uncivilised and against Indian culture. Nobody claims of bestowing favours on those who face tragedy caused by natural calamities,” Kumar, who heads the JD(U)-BJP Government in Bihar, told reporters here. He said he would return the “unutilised money” to the Modi Government. “I do not know the exact amount contributed to the Relief Fund by Gujarat. I will go through the details and immediately return the money received from Modi which was lying unspent in the CM Relief account,” he said. Kumar said he or his office was not consulted on the use of his photograph with that of Modi. “It has caused a great embarrassment to me,” Kumar said in reply to a question. “I have no knowledge about the agency advertising my photograph along with that of Modi as published in newspapers (Continued on page 10)

Blame-game over Bhopal snowballs Verdict reduced incident to a ‘car accident’: Moily PTI NEW DELHI/BANGALORE, JUNE 12

Hair Loss ? Baldness ?

Amid continuing blame-game over the Bhopal gas tragedy, the then Chief Justice of India A M Ahmadi was at the centre of the controversy with Law Minister Veerappa Moily saying the Supreme Court verdict had reduced the incident to a “car accident”. Ahmadi, who is blamed for diluting the charges in the case, reacted by saying that the Government could not escape the responsibility when such an incident happens. The spat between Moily and Ahmadi came even as the then Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Arjun Singh continued to be targeted by Congress leaders over Warren Anderson’s escape. Senior Congress leader Satyavrat Chaturvedi said Arjun

The Govt is always responsible. When something of this nature happens to the people of the country, does the Government say it has no responsibility? I am unable to understand that. — Ex-CJI A M Ahmadi

Singh had earlier admitted that the decision to allow Anderson to leave the country was taken at State level and said he should speak out so that the “names of others are not unnecessarily dragged into the issue.” Singh remained incommunicado and did not even turn up

at a function held by a media group to honour him with ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ for his “contribution to Urdu language”. Moily regretted in Bangalore that judiciary had diluted the charges in the gas leakage case. “CBI had filed charges under (IPC) Section 304 (II) under

which the maximum punishment is 10 years. But the highest court (headed by Ahmadi), in a review petition, converted it to 304 (A) which is actually meant for a car accident, truck accident,” the Law Minister told reporters in Bangalore. Section 304 (II) of the IPC is culpable homicide not amounting to murder while 304(A) is causing death due to negligence. “The offence of this dimension, I am very sorry, it has been reduced,” Moily said. Reacting to efforts to put the onus of responsibility on him, Ahmadi said, “the Government is always responsible. When something of this nature happens to the people of the country, does the Government say it has no responsibility? I am unable to understand that”.

Days after the Centre deferred its decision to hike prices of petroleum products, the Union Secretary for Petroleum S Sundareshan has stated that the pet ro l e u m c o m p a n i e s w e re incurring heavy loses due to Government subsidy and indicated that a hike was imminent. The Centre had constituted a high-powered committee under the chairmanship of Finance Minister Pranab Mukher-

jee to look into the matter but no decision could be reached due to the absence of many members. However, the union secretary today indicated that the rise in prices of petrol and diesel seemed imminent. “There is no justification for subsidies for petrol at least”, the secretary said while addressing a press conference, here, this evening. Substantiating his claim, Sundareshan said, the oil companies are losing Rs 3.50 on every litre

of petrol, Rs 3.40 on diesel, Rs 18 on kerosene and Rs 280 per LPG cylinder. He said international crude oil prices rose from $28 per barrel in 2003 to $147 per barrel in 2008 and now quotes at around $75 per barrel (159 litres make a barrel), putting major burden on Government resources, as also on State-run oil firms. “Oil marketing companies had to contend with under-recoveries of Rs 46,051 crore last

LUCKY ESCAPE FOR PASSENGERS

Train tragedy averted after driver spots missing tracks UNI VILLUPPURAM, TN, JUNE 12

A major train tragedy like Gyaneshwari Express derailment was averted when more than 1,500 passengers of the superfast Trichy-Chennai Rockfort Express had a miraculous escape after suspected pro-LTTE supporters blew up a portion of the railway track at Chithani village near Perani station in Tamil Nadu in the wee hours of today. The blast left a huge crater and the three metres of the track was missing. Only a fortnight ago, more than 100 passengers were killed and scores others injured when 13 coaches of Mumbai-bound Gyaneshwari Express derailed

in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district early on Friday. Five of these coaches were also hit by a speeding goods train. The incident occurred at 1.30 am when the train was running between Khemasoli and Sardiya stations, about 135 km from Kolkata. Police and Railway sources said the blast had taken place after the Salem-Chennai Express passed Mundiyambakkam Station at around 0200 hrs and few minutes before the Rockfort Express was to pass the stretch. The driver and guard of the train felt a rude jolt when the train was passing through Chithani after crossing the Mundiyambakkam station

whose Station Master alerted the driver of the Rockfort Express and the higher officials. On being asked to proceed with caution, the driver of Rockfort Express slowed down considerably and was proceeding at a speed of 20 km per hour when he noticed a portion of the track missing and immediately stopped the train, thereby averting a deadly disaster. This was the second time the Rockfort Express was being targeted by miscreants. On March 15, 1987, over 50 people were killed when the activists of Tamil Nadu Liberation Army (TNLA) blew up the track near Marudayatrupallam in Ariyalur.

The secretary said while the subsidy on LPG and kerosene is understandable, there is no justification for subsidy on petrol and diesel. “Three to four cars (Continued on page 10)

Cops raid several places in search of Pacheco HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, JUNE 12

The police conducted a series of raids in Colva, Nuvem and Majorda in the last 24 hours in search of former tourism minister Mickky Pacheco, who has been eluding the Goa police for questioning in the Nadia Torrado death case. The Colva police on Saturday evening searched a house at Majorda and maintained a close vigil on a house at Colva. It is learnt that the police had conducted a search of a house of an elected representative at Nuvem last night as part of the exercise to lay their hands on the former minister.

Sources at the Colva police station disclosed that the police led by station incharge, PI Tushsar Vernekar had proceeded to Betalbatim and Majorda late this evening in search of the elusive MLA. The team also maintained a strict vigil at Colva as to nab Pacheco, even as the police team returned without much success. The raids come a day after the Crime Branch with the assistance of the local police raided the business premises of Pacheco at Betalbatim last evening as part of the investigations into Nadia Torrado death case.

Sources in the know said the police also searched the house of a close supporter from Nuvem last night. Incidentally, the police had raided a hotel earlier this week where Pacheco’s legal counsels were putting up with the hope of nabbing the Benaulim MLA, but in vain. Though the police could not say whether they had any intelligence inputs indicating the presence of the former minister along the coastal belt, sources in the police headquarters say the raids and searches are part of a strategy to put pressure on the elusive MLA and force him to surrender to the investigating agency for his interrogation. Sources in the know, however, say the question of any surrender by the Benaulim MLA will be known only on Monday given that the courts were closed during the weekend and that the appeal filed by his OSD Lyndon Monteiro will come up before the High Court on June 14.

a day after he was questioned by the police in the case. Meanwhile, sources in the police said Pacheco had met Nadia for two days before she allegedly consumed poison on May 15. “There are several contradic-

tions in the statements given by Nadia's family and Pacheco during the questioning,” sources stated. According to Crime Branch, the ex-minister had met Nadia on May 13 and 14. It is also probing whether the 46-year-

old lawmaker was present at her house when she took rat poison. Crime Branch has also found that Nadia's mother was not in her house when her daughter took the extreme step, a claim denied by Sonia.

Aires terms Lyndon’s appointment as GTDC vice-president ‘illegal’ HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, JUNE 12

Noted social activist Adv Aires Rodrigues termed appointment of Lyndon Monteiro as vice president of Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) as ‘illegal.’ “The appointment was done in complete violation of law,” Rodrigues said. While briefing the media, Rodrigues informed that Section 274(1) (d) of the Companies Act mandates that a person shall not be appointed director of a company, if he/she has been convicted by a court of any offence involving moral turpitude and sentenced in respect thereof to imprisonment for not less than six months and a period of five years has not elapsed from the date of expiry of

the sentence. “The said law was not followed, while appointing Monteiro, who was convicted and sentenced to 15-month imprisonment in case of frauduary, as a vice president of GTDC,” he alleged. Rodrigues confirmed that in 2002, Monteiro was convicted and sentenced to imprisonment by a Margao Court in six cases under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act for issuing six bounced cheques of Rs 6 lakh to a Vasco-based businessman Rudradevan Ellath. “In view of the sentence imposed by the Court, Monteiro was not allegeable for the said post,” he maintained. Rodrigues demanded that all the expenditure incurred on Monteiro by the GTDC

be recovered from him and that he be prosecuted in accordance with law. Rodrigues further said that as per the Companies Act if the director is appointed in contravention of law, then he is liable to refund to the corporation the entire amount received and perks or enjoyed by him at the cost of the corporation. “The violation of law also leads to imprisonment upto 3 years and also fine of Rs 500 for every day of default,” he added. St Anthony, the popular saint By Dr Jose de Sousa

Come June 13 and the feast of the glorious St Anthony is celebrated all over the world, particularly in Portugal where he is a popular saint and in Goa, people throng the sanctuaries in a testimony of strong faith of the people in the saint. Festivities are held on a grand scale in Siolim where he is the patron saint. In Salcete, the festivities are held at Deussua, a hamlet of Chinchinim village, where a Chapel of St Anthony stands for the last four centuries. Anguished people who have lost something, frightened ones who have been robbed, lonely ones needing a partner to settle in life and so on… all roads lead to St Anthony sanctuaries for his intervention. In 1752, a Portuguese nobleman Dom Joao Antonio de Malo, who had lost his eyesight, was being taken by a machila (palanquin) from Agassaim to Ribandar. When his bearers needed rest at Goa Velha below the Pilar hillock, they made a

stop beneath a mango tree and told the nobleman that a statue of St Anthony was placed in a niche carved at a wayside log of a coconut tree at Goa Velha. Immediately the nobleman prayed to St Anthony, “You are known as the Saint of miracles, you are here in the open, in the sun and rain; if you restore my eyesight, I will build a beautiful chapel to keep your statue in”. On the return journey, Dom Joao again was lowered at the same place and there the miracle is reported to have occurred. And Dom Joao could see the statue of the saint. When the nobleman was back home, without any help he climbed the steps of the palace. As his wife could not believe, he came out in the veranda and counted the vessels he could see in the bay. Mapusa Police has deployed two police teams at the Mapusa Municipal Market and Kadamba bus stand to monitor the law and order in these two places. The presence of police teams, which comprises two policemen equipped with a wireless set, was necessitated due to the growing thefts in the market area. Parishioners to seek legal recourse over Curchorem church irregularities HERALD CORRESPONDENT CURCHOREM, JUNE 11

A group of parishioners have threatened to seek legal recourse in connection with alleged irregularities at the Guardian Angel Church at Curchorem. Refuting claims of those parishioners supporting the Parish Priest Fr Ligorinho D'Costa, the group has stated that legal notices will be issued to the entire Fabrica Committee in connection with the alleged Rs 30 lakh lottery scam. Speaking to Herald, the Guardian Angel Church Parish Pastoral Council Moderator Desmond Cardozo and Paixao Pereira said the parish priest had stated that 50,000 lotteries were printed, all sold and that Rs 50 lakh had been collected. “A bill for printing of 80,000 lotteries was discovered in the accounts, but the priest clarified that only 50,000 lotteries were printed,” said Cardozo. “The New Age Printers at Verna said

60,000 lotteries were ordered and printed. However, the parish priest took 25,000 lotteries and rejected 35,000 others as advertisements were not printed as desired.” “An additional 20,000 lotteries were printed at the request of the parish priest, who later wanted another 5,000 lotteries. As the printers were unable to do so, 840 sheets (5040 lotteries) from the rejected lot were taken by the parish priest.” “Thus, 80,000 lotteries were actually printed. On enquiries, we were told that the printers had burnt the balance 30,000 lotteries, allegedly rejected by the parish priest.” “We want to know who authorized them to burn the lotteries, for which they have received payment for printing, thus becoming the property of the church? Why were 840 sheets of lotteries, rejected in July 2009, taken back by the parish priest in December 2009,”

asked Cardozo. Commenting on the purchase of chandeliers for the church, Cardozo said the accounts for 2009-10 revealed an invoice/bill for Rs 1,95,694 towards purchase of eight chandeliers. “These were never seen in the church, nor were parishioners informed of such purchase. No entry about these chandeliers was made in the Inventory Register updated till March 2010. The parish priest claims that the chandeliers are in ‘safe custody’ and will be entered in the Inventory Register, before he leaves the parish,” said Cardozo. Reacting to another controversy about the prayer room, the PPC Moderator said the prayer room was constructed and blessed by the archbishop in 2000-01 as an Oratory. “The parish priest did announce that the Prayer Room would be kept closed for some time due to ongoing construction work and we never objected

to this. But we never expected that the sacred prayer room would be converted into a cement godown.” “Why was the office, opposite the prayer room, also not closed during the construction work? Even if required, as is done on all construction sites, a temporary godown could have been constructed to protect the cement from possible rains,” argued Cardozo. Commenting on the appointment of the Fabrica Committee, Cardozo stated that the parish priest conducted the process by holding elections by secret ballot. “The winners, except one who got maximum votes, were not recommended by the parish priest. The list, including a woman who got only 2 votes, were recommended by the parish priest and appointed by the diocese. Why were elections conducted by secret ballot if the priest did not want to honour the elections,” asked Cardozo.

Disputing claims of the former attorney Gabriel Fernandes that the devotees had increased due to the influence of the parish priest, Cardozo informed that Curchorem has grown over the years and this has led to an increase in parishioners and catechism students. “This is a progressive trend and has nothing to do with the parish priest,” he said. Cardozo also claimed that church authorities did little to resolve the differences between the two groups. While admitting that the parish priest has done a lot of development by way of construction work, Cardozo, however, insisted that the priority of a priest is to build hearts and not structures. They expressed regret that the priest had stopped the 80-year-old procession linking Curchorem and Sanvordem towns and had refused to offer prayers at the graves of the dead.

NGOs warn govt not to take them for granted HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, JUNE 12

Village Groups of Goa have warned the government not to take the NGOs fighting to save and protect Goa from destruction for granted any more. Representatives of various village groups have cautioned that they will no longer take things lying down if the government is hell bent in destroying the State. Briefing newsmen, the village groups questioned Cortalim MLA Mauvin Godinho for his remarks on the NGOs and reminded him that the recent clearance given to housing projects in Chicalim and Sancoale would alter the demography of these two villages. Edwin Mascarenhas said the allegations made by the Cortalim MLA against the NGOs relating of the Chicalim park are false and baseless. He said the village groups of Goa had inspected illegalities in Cortalim on the occasion of World Environment Day and found many illegalities, including hill cutting near Upasnagar. “I fail to understand why God-

inho is so aggressive when the NGOs are only exposing the illegalities. The MLA should name the person from the local NGO involved in illegalities”, he added. Mascarenhas took strong exception to the government decision to include the villages of Mormugao Taluka under the purview of the Planning and Development Authority. “The villagers have been deprived of our right in participatory planning. Our villages should be immediately excluded from the PDA and allow the villagers to participate in the Regional Plan 2021”, he demanded. Saying that the PDA has been imposed on the villagers, Mascarenhas sough to know why the local MLA is so adamant to include the villages under the PDA. He alleged that the PDA has done planning in some pockets of the Taluka only to suit certain people. For instance, he said C1 zones have been earmarked behind BITS Pilani and near the old grazing ground, adding that records indicate that only the real estate developers will benefit from the zone changes. “These zone changes will not suit

the growth of the local people, it will only suit the requirements of the builders”, he said, adding that the government ought to first develop basic infrastructure including power, garbage disposal and water supply. He feared that the population of Chicalim village would increase by two-fold in the next 2-3 years once the construction plans approved by the authorities takes concrete shape. Edwin Pinto said the slum at Zuari Nagar is housing approximately 40,000 population, but lamented that there’s no basic sanitation facilities, thus polluting the ground water. He demanded to know the connection between the MLAs and the real estate developers, be it in Carmona, Chicalim etc and charged the elected representatives for promoting and protecting mega housing societies. “Our MLAs are destroying Goa. The people will have no option than to come on the streets and stop the destruction of Goa”, he warned. Judith Almeida and Crydon Madeira also spoke.

With the authorities turning a blind eye to the assembly of migrant labourers behind the Margao Municipal building, the Green Goa Foundation has served a seven-day deadline on the Margao Civic body to keep away the labourers off the road. The NGO has threatened to move the court of law if the Civic body fails to initiate action within the deadline. In a petition, the Foundation stated that a large group of migrant labourers assemble behind the Municipal building and occupy the road at the peak traffic hour. Chairman of the Foundation, Raison Almeida contended that the presence of the labourers on the road causes considerable traffic obstruction, as the labourers solicit daily wage work from

The monsoons have almost set in the State, but mound of waste is awaiting clearance from Goa’s lone wholesale fish market in the city here. A visit to the market owned by the South Goa Planning and Development Authority revealed that tones of waste lay accumulated in the market

premises for want of clearance. SGPDA officials had no answer when asked over the delay in disposing off the waste. Incidentally, miscreants had disposed off the waste by burning last year, causing an environmental hazard. Local residents feared that the waste might find its way into the adjoining paddy fields

Stray cattle causing menace in Bicholim HERALD CORRESPONDENT BICHOLIM, JUNE 11

Stray cattle have become a menace in Bicholim town and little steps have been taken by authorities to address the issue. The stray cattle are frequently seen squatting on the roads, posing a threat to motorists and pedestrians. The problem is aggravated during the weekly market day, as a number of stray cattle rummage through the market area in search of food. This practice had been minimised to some extent some years

ago when authorities had decided to impound the stray animals. Incidentally on Saturday, a cow died on the road near the Bicholim petrol pump shortly after giving birth to a calf. When this correspondent went to the site in the morning, the cow was found struggling after having given birth to a calf by the roadside. The owner of the cow was crying foul over the unavailability of a veterinary doctor. Later, the owner called Animal Rescue Squad Chief Amrut

Singh, who was seen searching for a person who would help the ailing cow. The animal, however, died a short while later. Bicholim Muncipal Council workers acted swiftly and quickly carried away the dead animal to avoid any further controversy. When informed about the stray cattle in the city, Deputy Collector Narayan Gad said he would look into the matter. “We need to follow the earlier guidelines and I will look into the matter,” he told Herald.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Goa unit termed Bhopal gas leak verdict as ‘Justice delayed , justice denied’ and condemned Congress hand in letting Warren Anderson, leave the country. The party activists on Saturday held demonstration in the city against the verdict. BJP spokesperson, Rajendra Arlekar said that it’s a shame that the former top managers of the company, blamed for the massive Bhopal gas leak, where sentenced to only two years imprisonment and that too after 25 years. “It’s a mockery of judiciary,” the activists alleged. The Bhopal court on June 8, 2010 found seven guilty, who were all sentenced to two years in prison and ordered to pay a fine of Rs 100,000. BJP has demanded to conduct a thorough inquiry in the entire court verdict as well as in the investigation part. The activists have also demanded to investigate the War-

ren Anderson matter. Anderson, American thenchairman of the Union Carbide parent group, was among the accused but was not named in the verdicts after the Bhopal court declared him as ‘absconding’. It has been hinted that Arjun Singh, then Madhya Pradesh chief minister in commence with then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had taken the decision to release Anderson out of country. “Proper investigation is needed in this aspect,” BJP activists said. The said tragedy happened in December 1984, when the UCIL (Union Carbide India Ltd) plant in Bhopal released the highly volatile toxic chemical called Methyl Isocyanate, stored at the pesticide plant owned by the company. 15,000 people died in the tragedy and atleast five lakh others got inflicted by grievous injuries. Millions were left sick and the affected passed on the harmful effects of the gas to the next generations.

Cavrem local accuses forest officials of harassment HERALD CORRESPONDENT QUEPEM, JUNE 12

A resident of Cavrem-Quepem has accused forest officials at the Maina-Quepem Range and Canacona Range of threatening him and pressurising him to sign a statement against his wish. In a complaint with the Quepem police, Tulshidas Velip claimed that he had sent a letter to the prime minister claiming that a tiger had been spotted in Cavrem-Maina. “Since then, forest officials are harassing and pressuring me to issue a statement that there is no tiger in the area,” stated Velip. Velip claimed that on June 9, a forest guard from the Maina Range along with two officials, claiming to be

from the Canacona range, went to his house at Cavrem. “They started threatening me and wanted to know why I had filed a complaint regarding the presence of a tiger at Cavrem to the prime minister. They also forced me to sign a statement which they had written and I refused to do so. They refused to give me a copy of the statement and neither were they ready to read the contents,” stated Velip. The complainant claimed that villagers of Cavrem were also harassed by forest officials during the alleged bisonkilling incident and feared that they could harass him by filing a false complaint against him.

the passersby. That’s not all. He said the labourers chew tobacco and spit on the road, thus causing nuisance. Incidentally, the Margao Municipal council as well as the district traffic committee had recommended in the past to maintain the stretch entire

road behind the Municipal building free from the labourers. If fact, suggestion made to the Margao Civic body by the

district authorities and the traffic department to allot the labourers a fixed place in the city have fallen on the deaf ears of the Civic officials.

Law Minister M Veerappa Moily today attacked a top aide of Rajiv Gandhi for suggesting that the then prime minister may have had a role in the release of former Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson accused in Bhopal gas case, saying he was a new convert to BJP-Shiv Sena camp. "I think he (P C Alexander) had joined BJP, and with Shiv Sena's support he became a Rajya Sabha member. He is a new convert to the BJP-Shiv Sena and anti-Congress camp because he was not considered for Presidentship. It is a motivated statement," he told reporters here. He said many persons like Alexander, former principal secretary to Rajiv Gandhi, suddenly wanted to be martyrs. "I think he is responsible (for Anderson's sudden release after his arrest in December 1984) because he was the then Principal Secretary," he added. Alexander had hinted that Rajiv Gandhi may have had a role in the release of Anderson as the then prime minister could have agreed with the decision on letting him off. Moily said there was need

He said the CBI which investigated the worst ever industrial tragedy that claimed thousands of lives booked cases under IPC section 302, but the supreme court converted it into 304 A (culpable homicide which provides for lesser punishment). "Unfortunately the judiciary did it," he said. Moily said the Government was working on codifying laws to ensure that disasters were treated as disasters only. He also said the Government was

working on a set of guidelines that would facilitate fast tracking of cases related to major disasters in the light of the Bhopal case. "Our courts are very conservative. Hence we are working on new set of laws to deal with such disasters", Moily said. Referring to the case against former chief of Union Carbide Warren Anderson, he said it had not been closed. "We are pursuing it." When his attention was drawn to Anderson's wife saying that her husband was too old, he said everyone was equal in the eyes of law and age did not matter.

Rejecting Shiv Sena's criticism of MNS for voting in favour of ruling Congress-NCP alliance in the just-concluded Maharashtra Council polls, its chief Raj Thackeray today said his move was in favour of his party. "It is important for me to send my four suspended MLAs back into the Assembly as they were elected by lakhs of voters. It would be injustice with their constituencies if they remain out of the House," he told reporters here. The MNS legislators were suspended in November last year for attacking Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi in Assembly for not taking oath in Marathi. On MNS legislators voting for Congress in the June 10 polls, Raj said "we took whatever step needed to get suspension of our four MLAs revoked." Rubbishing Sena's allegation of vote-for-money during the polls, Raj questioned the Bal Thackeray-led party's stand to support NCP in Pune Municipal Corporation elections. "Did Sena get money to support NCP in Pune Municipal Corporation polls despite fighting the elections with their ally BJP?" he asked. Raj asked why Sena, which he left in 2005 to float his own

Spelling out his stand, he said "no one is my friend or enemy in politics. I am not bound to anyone and would do things for the good of my party and Marathi people." The estranged nephew of Bal Thackeray mentioned past incidents, where according to him, Sena had helped "outside" candidates like Congress

leader Murli Deora, who became Mayor of Mumbai with their support. Asking Sena to "mind their own business", Raj said "my party is an independent entity and Sena should not tell me what to do. Why we are being blamed if they lost in the Council polls?" Raj questioned Sena's support to businessman Rajkumar Dhoot and poet-journalist Pritish Nandy in Rajya Sabha polls and Lalchand Rathod in Council elections in the past. "Were these people any social activists that Sena supported them?" He criticised Sena for sending Bharatkumar Raut, a journalist, to Rajya Sabha and party spokesperson Neelam Gorhe to the state Council, saying the saffron outfit should field people who are loyal to it. Terming the saffron outfit's criticism of his party as "unnecessary", Raj said it is their (Sena's) old habit of blaming others for their defeat. "After Maharashtra Assembly poll defeat (in 2009), Sena blamed Marathi manoos and now they are blaming my party. They never accept their mistakes. Why did they field second candidate (in Council polls) when they did not have sufficient votes?" he sought to know.

Pune zoo for animal adoption to promote wildlife conservation

Woman found dead in trunk UNI MUMBAI, JUNE 12

A young unidentified woman was found dead in a locked aluminium trunk, near the Hub Shopping Mall on Western Express High Way at Goregaon, a western suburb. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Jayant Hurgude said the trunk, lying near Hub shopping mall since last evening, was noticed by a nearby 'garagewala' who opened it out of curiosity and found the body of a woman believed to be in her mid-to-late 20s. He got scared and rushed to his residence at Govandi late at night, from where he called one Latit Shah, a contractor, and narrated the whole incident to him. Thereupon, Shah asked him to inform the police, but he declined. So, Shah informed the police about the incident this morning.

PTI PUNE, JUNE 12

One can go beyond offering just lip service to the cause of wildlife conservation by adopting an animal and ensuring its well being. An animal adoption scheme is being given final shape at the sprawling Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park at Katraj on the city outskirts which also houses a snake habitat. The zoo has as many as 24 species of wild animals and is regarded as a big attraction for tourists in the region. Under management of the Pune civic administration, the zoo authorities have mooted the adoption scheme for animals which will be open to individuals, institutions, families, schools and corporate houses. The proposal put up before the civic body recently for approval said the scheme would serve the interests of wild life

lovers who despite their strong urge cannot visit forests frequently to spend time with animals. Now with prescribed payments varying with the species at the zoo, the sponsor can adopt the animals for a specific time frame and see his name put up on the board outside the cage of adopted animals and also carry a certificate along with photographs of the adopted ones. Explaining the features of the animal adoption scheme at Katraj zoo, its director K Umrigar told PTI "There are lots of people who want to contribute to their mite for wild life conservation and this would offer them the opportunity to do so. Apart from serving this purpose, the scheme will also generate revenue for Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) in the bargain." She said the zoo authorities

expected a good response to the proposal, to be given effect in a few weeks time, from the burgeoning corporate sector in Pune which is alive to its social responsibilities. "We expect the corporate houses to adopt entire species in the zoo as part of their conservation projects. Individual and institutional donors too can pitch in for the cause", she added. Those participating in the scheme will be entitled to income tax benefits. Citizens can adopt the zoo animals with the applicable charges for a day, a month, a year, three and five year period and also for life time. The adoption fees are being worked out on the basis of the cost of feeding the animals and tigers could fetch maximum revenue for the zoo with a proposed amount of about Rs 50 lakh per annum, sources in PMC said.

Grandmother’s stem cells cure rare bleeding disorder UNI BANGALORE, JUNE 12

A grandmother's stem cells have cured a rare bleeding disorder in a four-year-old at the Narayana Hrudayalaya Multispeciality Hospital which conducted the transplant successfully. Tarun from Kolar District in Karnataka, was diagnosed with Glanzmann’s Thrombasthenia at the age of 10 months when he was evaluated for severe bleeding from the nose requiring blood transfusion. The rare bleeding disorder is genetically acquired and autosomal recessive in nature. Less than 100 cases have been reported from India so far with the largest series of 42 cases from South India, according to a release here. Tarun comes from a family where consanguineous marriages (uncle-niece and first cousins) were common. His father married his sister’s daughter and incidentally, the child’s

grandparents are also first cousins. Glanzmann’s Thrombasthenia is a genetic defect in the platelets, with the absence of a receptor as a result of which, blood does not clot though the platelet numbers are normal. This child had been having recurrent episodes of severe bleeding from the nose with vomiting of blood leading to severe anaemia requiring blood transfusions. The bleeding sometimes was so severe that the patient used to be brought to hospital in shock. The child had to receive regular blood and platelet transfusions to stop the bleeding. Gradually the child stopped responding to the platelet transfusions due to alloantibodies after repeated blood transfusions. Meanwhile as a desperate measure, the ENT surgeons were called in and they attempted cauterizing the bleeding vessel but this was not

successful. After this attempt, the interventional radiologists were consulted and embolization of the bleeding vessel was attempted, but nothing worked. The only available treatment option at this time was to attempt a bone marrow transplant (BMT) and replace the platelets in the child with somebody else’s normal platelets permanently. BMT for this disease has been attempted successfully in only about 25 patients all over the world and none has been successfully reported from India till date. This is a very expensive treatment option and needs a donor to donate stem cells. Dr Sharat Damodar, Consultant Haematologist and Head, Bone Marrow Transplant Unit of Narayana Hrudayalaya Multispeciality Hospital and Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Center said ''Fortunately Tarun was fully matched with his father and hence we undertook this treatment of

bone marrow transplant for this child. Tarun underwent BMT. ''Unfortunately Tarun rejected the cells transfused from the father’s bone marrow and hence was back to his original disease. ''In a desperate measure, we searched other family members for a matched donor and to our surprise we found the grandmother to be fully matched. ''The child hence underwent a second transplant using the grandmother’s stem cells and engrafted successfully. ''Post transplant blood tests have confirmed that 100 per cent of the blood cells are the grandmother's and the platelet function tests have confirmed that the platelets are functional.'' Dr Damodar said ''This is the first case report in the world where a child with this rare disease has been cured by stem cells from a grandparent.''

US will consider fresh plea for Anderson's extradition PTI WASHINGTON, JUNE 12

Days after ruling out any `new inquiries’ against Union Carbide in the wake of the Bhopal court verdict, the US today said it is prepared to give "fair consideration" to any fresh request from India for extradition of the company's former chief Warren Anderson over the 1984 gas disaster. "We have an extradition treaty with India. And if India makes an extradition request to us, we will give it fair consideration," State Department spokesman P J Crowley said. If the government of India makes such a request, the US will "carefully evaluate" it, he told reporters in response to a question. Crowley, however, said he was not in a position to verif y whether the US had already received such requests or whether it had responded to them, arguing that all such issues were confidential. A day after the Bhopal court convicted and sentenced to two years former Union Carbide India Chairman Keshub Mahindra and six others on Monday, the US had ruled out any `new inquiries’ against the company

and also hoped that the verdict would bring "closure" to the families of the gas leak victims. On that day, responding to a specific question on whether there was a request by India for Anderson's extradition, Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Robert Blake had said: "As a matter of policy, we never discuss extradition, so I cannot comment on that." Crowley today also noted that it was hard to draw a comparison between the Bhopal gas tragedy that left over 15,000 dead and the BP's oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico now, saying the American companies were "very mindful and respectful" of the rules of the land when they operated overseas. "It is hard to necessarily draw a direct comparison to -- in the case of Bhopal, there was a settlement realised a number of years ago... though I don't express that I have all the facts here in front of me," Crowley said. "You have an ongoing situation here. BP, as a private company, has stepped up and indicated that it will take its own steps, since it owns the well, to stop the leak and to pay

for the mitigation of the impact," the State Department spokesman said. He said he would not "necessarily feel comfortable comparing what happened in the mid-80s and what's happening today." Meanwhile, Anderson's wife Lillian said the family had nothing else to say in the matter. She also said that her husband was not well. Early this week, US Congressman Frank Pallone, the founder and former co-chairman of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans, had supported Anderson's extradition demand. "All those responsible for this disaster, including the former chairman of Union Carbide Warren Anderson, should stand trial in India and receive punishment that reflects the devastation and pain they have caused for thousands of people. "Warren Anderson absolutely deserves to be extradited from the US and punished for the full extent of his crimes. As Chairman of Union Carbide at the time of the Bhopal gas disaster, Anderson was ultimately responsible for his company's actions," Pallone said.

BJP asks Cong to come clean on Anderson issue PTI PATNA, JUNE 12

With the Congress on the back foot, the BJP today asked it to come clean on its role in allegedly providing safe passage to then Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson after the Bhopal gas disaster in 1984 and demanded that it apologise to the nation. "Why is the Congress silent on the issue? Why is Arjun Singh silent? Why has the country not been informed about what happened? The silence is eloquent," BJP chief Nitin Gadkari said in his inaugural address at the twoday party national executive here. Only Ratnam knows my true potential: Abhishek Bachchan PTI NEW DELHI, JUNE 12

Abhishek Bachchan is back with Mani Ratnam in 'Raavan' and the star feels that the filmmaker is the only one in the industry, who know his true potential as an actor. "I think Mani is the only one who knows my true talent. He knows it better than I know myself. He shows me what I am capable of. After I did 'Yuva', I could not believe it was me on the screen doing a character like Lallan. Same goes with 'Guru'," Abhiskek said in a video conference from Mumbai. In a decade long career of his, Abhishek, who made his debut with JP Dutta's 'Refugee' 2000, has given some of his career's best performances in Ratnam's films like 'Yuva' and 'Guru'. In fact, it was 'Yuva' in 2003, which estab-

lished Abhishek as a performer. Before 'Yuva' happened, the 34-year-old actor was having a rough patch in the industry with a string of flops like 'Refugee', 'Dhai Akshar Prem Ke', 'Tera Jadoo Chal Gaya', 'Shararat' and 'Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost'. In 'Raavan', their third outing together, the actor says he is once again playing a role that challenges his very limit. "If any other filmmaker would have come to me with a script like 'Raavan' I would have said no because I know that I am not capable to do a character like Beera but it is Mani who always shows such confidence in my talent which is unbelievable," he added. Ratnam, who is known to be media-shy, said that the role was meant for Abhishek only. "Half of my work is done after I decide my star cast.

Every time I come with Abhishek it is about doing something different which he has not done before. It is challenging for both me and him and we always start from the scratch when we start something new." Giving an instance from their recent outing 'Raavan', Ratnam said, "Like for Beera I was so worried because Abhishek is so proper. Beera is this badly behaved character and I had to ask Abhishek to learn bad words and be abusive all the time... just let go to get right." The star cast of the film, Abhishek, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram along with Mani Ratnam were interacting with media persons in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, New York and Dubai through the new technology of video conferencing, from Mumbai and Chennai.

20,000 people died. Congress must apologise to the nation," BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad quoted Gadkari as saying. He termed Congress-led UPA as "Union-Carbide Protection Agency". Gadkari raised the Bhopal gas tragedy case to argue against the government's move to pass the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damages Bill in Parliament. "After the recent verdict on Bhopal gas tragedy, the danger of capping the liability through such legislation has become more pronounced," Gadkari said. The BJP president also maintained that the compensation given and the delay in the process was a "cruel joke". "The Bhopal gas verdict is a cruel joke by our criminal justice system. BJP demands that the government should again knock the doors of the Supreme Court and aggressively seek review of its judgement... Bhopal tragedy is the saga of treachery, backstabbing and betrayal," he said. "No words are power ful enough to condemn all those who mishandled this issue," the BJP chief said. "The Congress owes an explanation to the nation and victims of Bhopal Gas Tragedy as to who instructed that Anderson be allowed to leave the country," senior BJP leader Syed Shahnawaz Hussain told reporters on the sidelines of the meet.

Arjun Singh should speak out: Satyavrat Chaturvedi PTI NEW DELHI, JUNE 12

Attack from within Congress mounted on Arjun Singh on Warren Anderson's escape issue, with senior party leader Satyavrat Chaturvedi today saying the then Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister had earlier admitted that the decision was taken at state level and asked him to speak out. "Arjun Singh should break his silence and come forward to tell whether he stands by the three statements he had made after Anderson left the country, which clearly bring out the fact that the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had no role into it," he told PTI. Chaturvedi, who is a Congress Working Committee member and hails from Madhya Pradesh, said, "On December 8, 1984, Arjun Singh had said that Anderson was allowed to leave the country because the police felt his presence was not required. "On December 9, Singh said that there was no pressure on him from anybody (to allow Anderson to fly out of the country), while on December 14, he said he briefed the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on the circumstances that led to Anderson's arrest and then leaving the country." These three statements, Chaturvedi said, "clearly show that Rajiv Gandhi had no role in this decision, which was taken at the level of local administration and state government." He said Arjun Singh should

"endorse" these three statements he made earlier, other-

wise if he "has any new facts, he should say".

Pg 8 BJP for JPC probe into CBI ‘misuse’ PTI PATNA, JUNE 12

Alleging that CBI was being used to target "specific state governments", including Gujarat, BJP chief Nitin Gadkari today demanded a JPC probe into the working of the investigative agency, which he dubbed as "Congress Bureau of Intimidation". "While the nation is facing innumerable threats to its internal security, government is forcing CBI to work for its political designs. The CBI has become a tool of intimidation ..... The postmortem of its working is necessary," he said in his Presidential address to the two-day National Executive of BJP which began here. According to party general secretary Ravi Shankar Prasad, Gadkari alleged that the CBI is "misused" by the Congress against nonCongress leaders, including Mulayam Singh Yadav, to suit the needs of the ruling party at a given time. "The CBI is being misused in Gujarat where some brave police officers are being dragged in cases....CBI is targeting specific state governments. This is not proper," he said. Gadkari said the government remains silent "even if there are 70 to 80 encounters" in Uttar Pradesh. BSP, which is in power in the state, had bailed out the UPA on the floor the Lok Sabha with its 21 MPs abstaining from voting in the cut motions. "The latest disclosure by an officer in the context of the Bhopal gas tragedy has reinforced our fear that the Congress is continuing this strategy to cow down opponents or free from our law their acquaintances - Ottavio Quattrochi and Warren Anderson. This proves that their commitment is not for the people of India. We in the BJP strongly demand a JPC probe into the misuse of the CBI," he said.

Manipur vehicles not to enter Naga PTI IMPHAL, JUNE 12

Buses and trucks of Manipur will not ply through Nagaland until the Centre and the Nagaland government pay compensation for the damaged vehicles during the ongoing indefinite economic blockade on national highways, the transporters and drivers council (TDC) said today. "Several non-government organisations and militant outfits have been extorting money and harassing drivers, vehicle owners and passengers from Manipur in Nagaland for many years but we (TDC) have been tolerating it," TDC spokesman and general secretary N G Haridas told reporters here. Several vehicles were destroyed during the ongoing economic blockade on National Highway 39 (Imphal-KohimaDimapur) passing through a major portion of Nagaland and NH-53 (Imphal-Jiribam-Silchar) by All Naga Students Association

Manipur (ANSAM), Haridas said. The decision not to ply trucks and buses was taken during an emergency meeting of the council last evening. Several NGOs and militant outfits have been issuing diktat to Manipur-based vehicle owners at their whim besides security personnel collecting various `illegal taxes’ in Nagaland, the TDC general secretary said. The ANSAM, United Naga Council and Naga Students Federation (NSF) had also damaged several vehicles and injured drivers during the economic blockade by the ANSAM who protested against holding elections to autonomous district councils in Manipur hills, he said. Until and unless the central and Nagaland governments pay compensation to damaged vehicles and injured drivers and second drivers, the TDC will not ply its vehicles through Nagaland, Haridas said.

Geelani detained PTI SRINAGAR, JUNE 12

Apprehending "breach of peace", police today detained Chairman of hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelani. A police team headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Bashir Khan detained Geelani from his Hyderpora residence and took him to Humhama police station at around 7.15 AM, official sources said. The step was taken as a precautionary measure in view of apprehension of breach of peace during a special prayer meeting convened by Geelani at Hazratbal Shrine later today, they said.

A Hurriyat spokesman condemned the police action saying "government resort to cheap tactics and arrest our leaders on flimsy grounds". "Geelani was leaving for Sopore to attend funeral of his close friend Mohammad Akbar Bisati, who passed away this morning. Geelani pleaded that he be allowed to attend the funeral of Bisati in police custody but they refused and took him to the police station," the spokesman said. Geelani had planned a special prayer meeting at Hazratbal shrine later today for improvement of weather conditions in the valley.

Coast Guard rescues Lankan boat crew PTI

50 die as ethnic clashes continue in Kyrgystan AGENCIES MOSCOW, JUNE 12

Violence between ethnic Kyrgyz and the minority Uzbeks continued unabated in Kyrgystan, claiming as many as 50 lives and injuring hundreds of others threatening the stability of the nation, already in the throes of a political crisis. At least 50 people have been killed and over 600 injured in the ethnic violence in south Kyrgyzstan and interim authorities seem unable to protect the Uzbek minority in the Osh region, a stronghold of deposed President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, reports from the Central Asian republic suggest. The fighting between the Kyrgyz and the ethnic Uzbek groups, began in the country's second largest city of Osh on Thursday night and continued late last night. Over 400 people have also been hospitalised, mostly with gunshot wounds, while about 200 were being treated as outpatients, newsru.com website

reported. The authorities, who declared a state of emergency in the region, have so far been unable to control the situation as looting and arson attacks on Uzbek residential areas and businesses continued unabated. “The situation in Osh remains very difficult,” an Interior Ministry spokesperson was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti. Over 1500 Afghan war veterans have volunteered to help the military and police, which so far have failed to stop the clashes, in spite of orders to shoot to kill. Correspondent of Moscow based Biznes FM reported that dead bodies were lying on the streets of Osh and huge clouds of smoke could be seen hanging in the Uzbek residential areas. Medics have been unable to reach many of the injured people due to the fighting. “Our doctors practically didn't go out on calls at night because they were afraid,” Osh's health chief was quoted by the 24 kg

news agency as saying. He also added that ambulances that had attempted to reach the injured had been attacked. According to ITAR-TASS Uzbek women and children are fleeing towards the border with Uzbekistan, which was closed after April change of power in Bishkek. Last night UN Secretary General Ban ki Moon had appealed for calm and urged the Kyrgyz interim government to retain inter-ethnic harmony in the country. Meanwhile, Kyrgyzstan has appealed for Russian help today to stop ethnic fighting that has killed at least 50 lives and left parts of its second-largest city in flames, the worst violence since the president was toppled in April. The interim government in Kyrgyzstan, which hosts US and Russian military bases, said it was powerless to stop armed gangs from burning down the homes and businesses of ethnic

Uzbeks in parts of Osh. Gun battles raged throughout the night. “We need the entry of outside armed forces to calm the situation down,” interim government leader Roza Otunbayeva told reporters. “We have appealed to Russia for help and I have already signed such a letter for President Dmitry Medvedev.” Kyrgyzstan, a poor ex-Soviet state of 5.3 million people, declared a state of emergency in Osh and several rural districts early yesterday after rival ethnic gangs fought each other with guns, iron bars and petrol bombs. Renewed turmoil in Kyrgyzstan will fuel concern in Russia, the United States and neighbour China. Washington uses an air base at Manas in the north of the country, about 300 km (190 miles) from Osh, to supply its forces in Afghanistan. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Otunbayeva discussed the situation in a tele-

phone call today, the Russian government's press service said, without giving details. Otunbayeva said more reinforcements would be sent to Osh. The interim government has already deployed troops and armoured vehicles and declared a night-time curfew in Osh, to no avail. Kyrgyzstan, which won independence with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, has been in turmoil since the revolt that toppled Bakiyev on April 7, kindling fears of civil war. Supporters of Bakiyev, now in exile in Belarus, briefly seized government buildings in the south on May 13, defying central authorities in Bishkek. Otunbayeva accused supporters of Bakiyev -- like her, an ethnic Kyrgyz -- of stoking the violence to disrupt her government's plans to hold a national referendum on June 27 to vote on changes to the constitution. “This event shows that the push by these people to turn backwards is extraordinarily great,” she said.

Report on AI bombing to be released soon PTI TORONTO, JUNE 12

Israel gets Saudi nod to let fighters strike Iran N-sites PTI LONDON, JUNE 12 Saudi Arabia has carried out tests to stand down its air defences to allow Israeli fighters to make bombing runs on Iran's nuclear sites. “The Saudis have given their permission for the Israelis to pass over and they will look the other way,” the Times reported quoting US sources in the Middle-East. “They have already done tests to make sure their own jets aren't scrambled and no one gets shot down. This has been done with the agreement of the (US) State Department,” the paper said. Quoting defence sources in the Gulf, Times said, in the week that the UN Security Council imposed a new round of sanctions on Tehran, Riyadh agreed to allow Israel to use a narrow air corridor in the North to reach Iran. The tests to stand down air defences, sources said, was to ensure that Israeli bombers pass unmolested, and for this Riyadh

carried out exercises to make certain that its own jets were not scrambled and missile defence system not activated. Quoting sources in Saudi Arabia, Times said that it was common knowledge within defence circles in the kingdom that an arrangement is in place if Israel decides to go ahead to obliterate the Iranian nuclear facilities. Times said that despite the tension between the two governments, they share a mutual loathing of the regime in Tehran and a common fear of Iran's nuclear ambitions. The defence sources said the four main targets for the Israelis would be uranium enrichment facilities at Natanz and Qom, the gas storage development at Isfahan and the heavy water reactor at Arak. Secondary targets for the Israeli jets could be the light water reactor at Bushehr, which could produce weapons grade plutonium, when completed. The Iranian nuclear targets, defence sources said lie almost 2,250 kms from Israel and could

be out of reach of its bombers even with aerial refuelling. But an open air corridor across northern Saudi Arabia would significantly shorten the distance. Times, quoting defence sources in the Gulf, said the Israeli Air Force would have to carry out the attacks in multiple waves of bombers, crossing Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Israel, which regards Iran as its principal threat has refused to rule out using military option to prevent Tehran developing nuclear weapons. In 2007, Israel was reported to have used Turkish air space to attack a suspected nuclear reactor being built by Iran's main regional ally, Syria. This won't be the first time that Israeli fighters have overflown Saudi air space to strike. On June 7, 1981, Israeli Air Force F-16 fighting falcons flew over the kingdom to strike and destroy the Iraqi nuclear reactor at Osirak.

Afghan girls treated after gas attack Reuters KABUL, JUNE 12

About 50 Afghan schoolgirls became ill and were taken to hospital after a suspected gas poisoning in their school in southwestern Afghanistan, officials said today, the latest in a spate of similar incidents. The teenaged girls fell ill and some became unconscious after smelling gas at their school in Ghazni, a two-hour drive south of the capital, Kabul, said senior provincial police official Nawroz Ali Mahmoodzada. “It is again the same kind of attack to discourage girls from attending schools,” Nawroz Ali Mahmoodzada told Reuters. “It is very disturbing. We have not yet found any clues to say where this substance is from or who is behind it,” he said. Safiullah, a doctor in Ghazni's central hospital, said most of the girls were treated and discharged. Others were still under medical care, he said. Mahmoodzada said none had died. Today's incident followed a similar pattern to other attacks at girls' schools involving an airborne substance which officials say could be poisonous gas.

Ship on way to rescue teenage sailor Reuters SYDNEY, JUNE 12

A French fishing vessel is expected to reach stricken Californian teenage sailor Abby Sunderland today, Australian maritime officials said. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said it was sending a new aircraft to the remote southern Indian Ocean, where the 16-yearold's yacht Wild Eyes was spotted yesterday, to regain radio contact and help coordinate the rescue. Sunderland left the United States in January on a widely-criticised attempt to circumnavigate the world. Her yacht ran into trouble on Thursday as it was pounded by huge waves midway between Africa and Australia. Rescuers who flew over the area yesterday said the yacht had lost its mast but Sunderland had reported it was not taking on any water. The ship Ile de la Reunion, from France's Indian Ocean island possession of Reunion, was en route to the area, and ex-

pected to arrive later yesterday, with two more ships due to arrive tomorrow. The search for Sunderland involved Australia, US and French rescue authorities sending ships and a commercial airliner to an area about 3,219 km southeast of Madagascar and 2,000 miles southwest of Australia. An Australian rescue team aboard a Qantas Airbus A330300 aircraft spent around two hours in the area yesterday. Members of the search party said Sunderland's first words to them were ''This is Abby'' and she appeared to be in good spirits, in comments posted on Sunderland's official blog (soloround.blogspot.com). “It was just a very small dot on the ocean - she was on the back deck,” said Sergeant Mike Wear of Western Australia's state water police, in comments posted on the site. Australian rescuers, who are coordinating the rescue attempt, said weather in the area

had improved slightly overnight, but Sunderland's yacht was still facing winds of up to 35 knots and swells of up to five metres.

Australian authorities are monitoring the yacht's l o c a t i o n v i a i t s d i s t re s s beacon.

Cuba to move six political prisoners, release one ReuteRs HAVANA, JUNE 12

The Cuban government will re-

lease an ailing political prisoner on parole and move six others to jails closer to their homes

this weekend in a humanitarian gesture promised to Cuba's Catholic leader, the church said. The moves come ahead of a visit to Havana next week by Vatican Foreign Minister Dominque Mamberti, who is likely to press Cuba on its estimated 190 political prisoners in talks with Cuban leaders. The transfers will bring to 12 the number of prisoners who have been moved closer to their families following May 19 talks between Cuban President Raul Castro and Cardinal Jaime Ortega. Castro agreed to improve the

conditions of some prisoners and release others, particularly those in ill health. Six were moved earlier this month. The prisoner to be released, Ariel Sigler Amaya, is in ill health and currently being treated in a Havana hospital, the church said in a statement. The six other prisoners will be transferred starting on Saturday, it said. Families of the jailed dissidents have complained that it was difficult to visit their loved ones in distant prisons. Julia Nunez, whose husband Adolfo Fernandez was among those to be moved on Saturday, said she was “very excited” about the news. “Our goal is that they return to our homes, but this is a positive step,” she told Reuters. Ladies in White One of the six to be moved this weekend was Hector Maceda, husband of Laura Pollan, leader of the dissident group '”Ladies in White.” She was not immediately available for comment. Maceda was one of 75 dissidents arrested in a 2003 government crackdown. More than 50 of them remain in jail. Their wives and mothers formed the Ladies in White group that has staged protest marches every Sunday in Havana since the crackdown.

Iran marks a year of Ahmadinejad govt, US says 'illegitimate' PtI WASHINGTON, JUNE 12

Upping the ante against Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the US has dismissed as “illegitimate” the Iranian president's election to the country's top office, as he completes a year of his second term. Locked in a bitter war of words with Iran over the slapping of fresh sanctions against it, the US said Ahmadinejad's term in office has been marked by repression and suppression of freedom of expression. “We are mindful of the fact that tomorrow (Saturday) will mark the first anniversary of the illegitimate election in Iran and the consequent repression and restrictions on freedom of assembly and freedom of expression that have followed the election last year in Iran," State Department spokesman P J Crowley told reporters at his news briefing. Elaborating what he meant by “illegitimate” elections, Crowley said the results of the election did not reflect the will of the Iranian people but the “government is what it is”. The UN Security Council resolution approved this week slapped additional economic sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme which the US says points to a covert weapons agenda but Tehran defends as solely for energy purposes. “We thought this was the right time to send a very clear message to Iran that it's on the w ro n g c o u r s e a n d h a s t o change,” Crowley said in response to a question on the UNSC resolution. “It was the right time because it is Iran that said very flatly, beginning in New York when foreign ministers met on the margins of the NPT conference, and then even in Tehran with the leaders of Brazil and Turkey present, that regardless of any

declaration, regardless of any TRR proposal, Iran was going to continue to enrich uranium to 20 per cent,” he said. After rejecting a Western proposal last year to ship low-enriched uranium out of Iran in exchange for highly-enriched fuel for the Tehran Research Reactor (TRR), Iran last month agreed on a similar deal with Brazil and Turkey. However, the US and its allies said the agreement did not satisfy the international concerns. “That is a fundamental violation of previous Security Council resolutions. It is a violation of Iran's obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty (NPT). “Iran remains the only country in the world that has failed to convince the IAEA of the peaceful intentions of its nuclear programme,” Crowley said. He said the TRR proposal back in October was meant as a confidence-building measure.

Irish voters want election this year ReuteRs DUBLIN, JUNE 12

A majority of Irish voters want a parliamentary election this year but do not want either Prime Minister Brian Cowen nor his main opposition rival as leader, according to an opinion poll published today. A parliamentary election is not due until 2012 but the latest Irish Times/Ipsos MRBI poll indicated 57 percent of those surveyed want a 2010 vote, with 35 percent saying they did not. The results come after Ireland's Labour party topped an opinion poll for the first time on Thursday, pushing the governing party into third place in a move that would radically alter Irish politics if it was repeated in an election.

From page 1 ‘Petrol, diesel subsidy... are used by one household. Unless they feel the pinch there would be no conservation of fuel”, he said. S i m i l a r l y, h e s a i d , t h e transporters were charging heavily for the services and hence a minor increase would not affect their business. “A truck from Delhi to Mumbai and back charges

around Rs 40,000 of which the diesel cost works out to about Rs 20,000. If diesel was not subsidised, the cost would increase by Rs 1,000-2,000, which is really quite small. Considering how much the transporters charge, I don’t think the cost of diesel should be any issue”, he reasoned. “In terms of the impact on the common man, an average bike commuter who consumes about 7-8 litres a month would be impacted by around Rs 20. A car user who needs 50 litres monthly would have to shell out Rs 200 extra while a bus commuter spending Rs 10 on a ticket, the impact would not be more than a few paise, Sundareshan said. When asked whether increase in fuel prices would not give rise to inflation, he said, “It is wrong to say inflation is linked with rise in prices of fuel. Yes, with the hike in diesel there could be marginal increase but not entirely”. Both the finance and oil ministries feel large subsides on fuel are unsustainable and want action on the Kirit Parekh Committee report that h a s f a v o u re d f re e i n g o f t r a n s p o r t f u e l p ro d u c t s pricing for oil marketing companies, he said.

today. Nor was my office consulted... I will explore and take all possible legal action against those responsible for this unethical and illegal act,” the chief minister said. Kumar, however, said that such developments would not impact the alliance between the two parties. His comments have come at a time when the parties are preparing for the Assembly elections in the State due later this year. Kumar has kept Modi at an arm’s length apparently to woo Muslim voters. He had specifically asked the BJP not to use Modi, who had received flak for the 2002 Gujarat riots, in its campaign in the State during the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. A section of BJP leadership felt the advertisements were brought out by those opposed to the JD(U)-BJP alliance.

Holiday SC, Arpora defeated Valankani, Arambol 3-0 to lift the late Dattaram Paleyekar football trophy organised by Football Club of Siolim at St Anthony ground, Siolim on Saturday. The score was 3-0 at the breather. A first half brace from Pradeep Chopdekar set Arpora on course for a convincing victory. Valankani who had to play the semi-final round just 24 hours earlier, lacked the match fitness today. Arpora opened the scoring in the 6th minute when Adrian Baig crossed from the left and Saish Palyekar cut the ball back and Pradeep Chopdekar fired home from close rage.

Sanjay Kundelkar doubled the lead for Arpora after heading in Saish Palyekar's corner from the right side on 19th minute. Two minutes later, Pradeep received a through ball and smashed in Arpora's third. After the lemon break the pace of the game reduced and neither team could add to the scoreline. India down Zimbabwe AGENCIES HARARE, JUNE 12

Helped by Yusuf Pathan's blazing 37 runs and Virat Kohli's valuable 26 runs, India defeated Zimbabwe by 6 wickets in the first T20 match at Harare. Chasing a modest 112 to win, India overhauled the target with five overs to spare with Yusuf Pathan (36) and Virat Kohli (27) finishing off the game for the visitors, who were shocked by the African minnows twice in the one-day tri-series. Earlier, shaking off the tri-series rust, Indian bowlers showed discipline and restricted Zimbabwe to a meagre 111 for nine at Harare Sports Club. Paceman R Vinay Kumar (3/24) was the most successful bowler with three wickets while Ashok Dinda (2/27) and Pragyan Ojha (2/11) accounted for two victims apiece. During India's chase, big-hitting Pathan and youngster Kohli shared an unbeaten 64-run stand for the fifth wicket to rescue India from a precarious 48 for 4. Pathan's 23-ball knock contained two fours and three sixes while Kohli faced 22 balls with three fours and a six.

India, like their opponents, began poorly as they lost openers -- Murali Vijay (5) and Naman Ojha (2) to paceman Chris Mpofu by the third over. Skipper Suresh Raina (28) played a good hand in the middle order to re-build the innings with Rohit Sharma (10). However, both of them returned to the dug out in the eighth over with spinner Ray Price (2/24) getting rid of them in the eighth over. It became jittery for India but Pathan and Kohli ensured that their side do not end up facing more humiliation. Earlier, Chamu Chibhabha (40)

and Craig Ervine (30) stood tall amid ruins for the hosts, as their middle and lower order collapsed after a sound start. Opting to field, Vinay Kumar gave India a perfect start and landed the first blow to the hosts as early as in the fourth ball of the match when he got rid of Hamilton Masakadza (1), caught by skipper Suresh Raina at extra cover. Vinay was hit for a four and two sixes in his next over by Chibhabha and Brendan Taylor (15) but the paceman got his revenge when he caught the latter plumb in front of the wicket in the last ball of the same over.

BY DOLCY D’CRUZ HERALD FEATURES ant Antoni bhokta, Ochoream tujim tera, Choudavem kori bhokta, Amchea papiamchea xara” (Oh Holy St Anthony, you have done thirteen miracles, let the fourteenth one be in our sinner’s city) these are the powerful words which ends the hymn dedicated to St Anthony. He has done so many miracles in our homes for years that we have lost count. Any small thing lost in the house, the first place one runs to light candles is the altar of St Anthony, a saint for lost things. He is widely known for his 13 miracles which include bringing back to life a dead boy to reveal his killer and gathering fish in the sea to listen to his sermon. St Anthony’s tongue is incorruptible to date, a fragile part of the body which is the first to disintegrate after death and his relics are placed at the Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua, Italy. St Anthony of Padua is sought by different names: Doctor of the Church, Wonder Worker, Professor of Miracles, Seeker of lost articles, Saint of barren women and Saint of travellers. Born Fernando Martins de Bulhões in 1195 to a wealthy family in Lisbon, Portugal, Anthony of Padua passed away on 13 June 1231 in Padua, Italy and was canonised by Pope Gregory IX on May 30, 1232, less than a year after his death, making his the quickest canonisation of the Catholic Church. St Anthony was strongly attracted to the simple Gospel lifestyle of the Franciscan friars. His ability to preach was discovered at an ordination, when none of the friars were prepared to occupy the pulpit to preach. The head of the hermitage, who had no one among his own friars suitable for the occasion, called upon St Anthony, who he suspected was most qualified, and told him to speak whatever the Holy Spirit should put into his mouth. His rich voice and arresting manner held the attention of his hearers for the entire discourse. When he was alive, he possessed miraculous powers and performed miracles when prayed to. Grandma stories always include the miracles performed when St Anthony was challenged by heretics. The first miracle was that a mule knelt before St Anthony who was holding the Blessed Sacrament in his hands. The mule was kept starving for three days and yet refused to eat the oats placed before him and instead knelt before the Saint. Another famous miracle was that St Anthony converted poisoned food offered to him by some heretics to food safe to eat by blessing it with the sign of the cross. The third miracle deals with the famous sermon Saint Anthony preached to

BY JANICE RODRIGUES HERALD FEATURES ccidents, surgeries, or mere cuts and bruises, all these occurrences share the common factor of blood. As indispensable as blood is for the survival of human life, it is often inaccessible in some cases, that is why we are equipped with Blood banks. With Goa’s population of approximately 16 lakhs, the state is blessed with donors who voluntarily donate their blood in order to save the lives of people, even unknown, without expecting anything in return. “Blood donation has become increasingly significant in recent times with a number of organisations like the Lions Club, Rotary Club, Red Cross, even colleges and other commercial offices holding blood donation camps all through the year,” says Dr RG Wiseman Pinto, professor and head of the Pathology Department and the Blood Bank at GMC. In 2009 alone, there have been 122 camps all across the state, yielding blood of around 11,570 units of Blood. “The blood is measured in units which is one packet that has blood collected in it,” says Dr Pinto. The medical field requires blood in a various circumstances. It is a dire requirement in cases of trauma that includes accidents and other such injuries. “The other situations are when conducting operations and after delivery; we need to replenish the loss of blood,” elaborates Dr Pinto, adding that in cases of liver and kidney failure also blood is required as these organs produce a clotting agent, which is lacking. Blood donation is a noble cause but not everybody can donate blood, the blood given has to be the same type as well as free from any disease, “Blood transfusion is a very crucial procedure as it not only saves life, but on the reverse it can also lead to the spread of diseases including HIV, Hepatitis, Malaria and Syphilis,” cautions Dr

the fish in Rimini. He had travelled to the city to preach but the people were ordered to ignore him. Rejected, he went to the bank of the river Marecchia and started preaching to the fish. Suddenly, there were thousands of fish neatly arranged in rows, straining to listen to every one of St Anthony’s words. Other miracles of St Anthony include healing a woman beaten by her jealous husband, resuscitating a young girl who was getting drowned, reattaching the foot of a young man, who out of desperation had cut it off after kicking his mother and making a newborn baby speak to attest to the virtue of his mother. Another great miracle performed by the Saint was when he was miraculously transported to Portugal from Italy to resurrect a young man so that he could reveal that he was not assassinated by St Anthony’s father. Till date, he performs big and small miracles, often on a Tuesday, the day St Anthony’s relics were placed in Padua. St Anthony’s portraits and statues often associate the Saint with the Child Jesus playing on his book, a lily and even offering alms to the poor. According to one legend, there lived a man called Count Tiso who had a castle in Padua where he provided a chapel and hermitage for the friars. One night, St Anthony’s little cell suddenly filled up with light. Jesus appeared to Anthony in the form of a tiny child. Passing by the hermitage, the Count saw the light shining from the room and the Saint carrying and communicating with the infant. The count fell to his knees upon seeing this wondrous sight. And when the vision ended, Anthony saw the count kneeling at the open door. Anthony begged Count Tiso not to reveal what he had seen until after his death. St Anthony is a saint because he was pure in heart. Placing St Anthony as inspiration, let us go through life clinging to the wonderful mystery of the humble, self-emptying Christ. As we celebrate St Anthony’s feast, do remember to adorn him with white flowers, especially lilies, and thirteen candles.

HOROSCOPE An emotional day with family members offers you new perspective and hope. You need to deal (21 Mar – 19 Apr) with your parents -- or your old family history --in some way today. You may not feel up to it, but your energy couldn't be better for such a big challenge. You do love a challenge!

Future prospects are seductive, but it's best to stick with current projects now. You need to make (23 Sep – 22 Oct) sure that you're keeping track of all your current tasks and projects -- don't let anyone pin you down to taking anything else on! It's a good idea to shut your door, if possible.

The best way to socialize with friends is over a meal -- call and book a table. Your happiness is (20 Apr – 20 May) palpable today -- though it may come through in odd ways, especially if you're going through some big emotional business in other part of your life. Share the wealth!

Use your vast intuitive powers to detect the real motivation behind their flattery. You need to deal (23 Oct – 21 Nov) with someone who is asking a lot of you -- so make sure that you're up to it. Your good energy should help you with any deep conversations or serious emotions that pop up.

Remember how tight they can be with money before you commit to traveling with them. You (21 May – 21 Jun) need to go cheap today -- eat in, keep yourself from online shopping, and find new ways to say no when friends entice you with attractive offers. It doesn't have to last too long -- just a few days.

Everyone's energies are different, so don't take someone's shyness personally. Try to show a (22 Nov – 21 Dec) little flexibility today -you've got to make sure that your family and coworkers see the right side of you. It's a good time for you to just go with the flow, if at all possible.

New beginnings can be scary -- take things one step at a time and you'll be fine. Your energy lev(22 Jun – 22 Jul) els are through the roof today, so make the most of them! If you've got a new task to complete, do it with gusto -- or see if you can make the right impression on that new hottie.

You've got some hot stuff on your plate right now -- deal with it quickly. You've got a few (22 Dec – 19 Jan) new ideas for taking care of business, and now is the perfect time to experiment. Your energy is flowing well, so see if you can get your colleagues or friends to follow along.

Being modest is nice, but learning how to toot your own horn is equally important. You and your big (23 Jul – 22 Aug) heart are much in demand today -- so get out there and show others what it's all about! Your warmth makes you even more attractive to all the right people, and the good times start to roll right away.

Taking the easy way out is not your style -- do what's right, like you always do. You need to (20 Jan – 18 Feb) deal with your daily routines today -- no matter how much they seem to oppress you. If you don't stick to your schedule, you may find that you get some bad surprises tomorrow.

People come in all shapes and sizes -- be proud of the diversity of your group. You need (23 Aug – 22 Sep) your friends to support you today -- so it's a good thing you can count on them. Your energy is just right for enmeshing yourself in something bigger, and they are sure to make space for you.

Pull out your sharpest tool: your intuition. Follow it in love, work and money. You're filled with (19 Feb – 20 Mar) awesome creative energy today, and you should find that you are better able to cope with any weirdness that life throws at you. See if you can get your family to see things your way.

Pinto adding, “that is the reason why we screen the blood before it is given to another person, to check for any impurities.” Apart from the person being healthy, there are other criteria that have to be fulfilled, these include that the donor be between the ages of 18 to 65, as per the NACO regulations. The donor should also have haemoglobin count above the rate of 12.5. “A donor if he has had an operation or any illness has to wait 12 months before donating blood,” explains Dr Pinto. It is advisable to donate blood about four times in a year for a male and about thrice in case of females. Persons with high risk behaviour and jaundice are barred from donating blood unless it is for the use for himself, also termed as autologous; or for the sake of research. Autologous can be carried out in cold cases, where the patient is aware of an operation a month ahead. It can’t be done for emergency cases,” says Dr Pinto. This process comes in handy in cases of rare blood groups. GMC has the biggest blood bank in the state, the other blood banks include those at Hospicio in Margao, Asilio in Mapusa and SMRC in Vasco. The GMC blood bank is equipped with a 24-hour staff and GMC is the only centre in Goa that also has a Blood Component Unit wherein the blood is separated into the various components like the Red Blood Cells and the Plasma, “This is beneficial when giving patients only what they require to avoid future complications, for example an anaemic patient only requires the RBC. The other advantage of the segregation is cost effectiveness, only unit of blood could help three patients with different problems,” explains Dr Pinto. The misconceptions prevalent among people that blood donation can spread disease is mostly falsely based. Dr Pinto informs, “Since the year of 1989, when the first HIV case was detected in Goa, our procedures have become ever stringent.” Everything that is used in the process is disposable, syringes, needles, the packets are all disposable, and every donation camp is headed by a medical officer, who is a qualified doctor, a technician, a social worker and a nurse. It is this team of professionals who oversee the safe procedures. “After each donation or before transfusion, the blood is tested and if it has any impurities, it is not given to the patient,” says Dr Pinto. When asked what they do with rejected blood, Dr Pinto replies “It is either disposed off or it is taken by research institutes, for the testing of new medications.” Every donor is entitled to a blood donor card, “When a person donates blood, he is given a card that entitles him to receive the amount of blood he has donated when he is in need,” says Dr Pinto. Blood donation can save the lives of others as well as yourself, “It is an absolutely safe and noble service to the society and humanity at large,” concludes Dr Pinto.

Let your Voice be Heard The All Goa Private Bus Owners Association (AGPBOA) will hold a meeting today at 10 am at the T B Cunha Hall, Panjim. Its purpose is to address various grievances of daily commuters. Herald details BY NOMRATHA FERNANDES HERALD FEATURES sk a member of the public to list their grievances of commuting by bus and the list doesn’t seem to stop, just like the bus ride, one said sarcastically it stalls and halts and doesn’t seem to get anywhere on time. To get an overall idea of the magnitude of their issues, let us step into their shoes. For those of you who wear these shoes and travel by bus on a daily basis, you could skip this, least it seems reiterative. Your bus has arrived, after what seems like ages. You enter the bus amidst yells of

A

‘beigin chod’, ‘beigin chod’ (enter quickly, enter quickly) from the conductor who occasionally will even use force to get you in. You either climb in to an already crowded bus without an empty seat around making you stand among the sea of people or you get a seat in a half empty bus and watch as it fills beyond its capacity. If you’re clever you will wrestle your way through the crowd one stop before yours to make sure you make it. While standing, you hear a booming imperative from the conductor ‘phate ya phudey vos’, depending on your position, seated then you are bound to be elbowed at some point. You watch as the bus driver speeds in his bid to get to the other stop before the bus behind or crawls from bus stop to bus stop hoping that persons will be at the bus stop as he gets there or worse, halts, waiting for his ‘trusted customers’. With the crowd of people surrounding you, you hold on to your belongings, not wanting them to be stolen. You wonder why the ‘9 Standing’ message is up there as you flinch your nose to the body odour that emanates from the crowd, especially on a hot day. Then there’s arguing with the conductor for change, loosing balance if you’ve not held on tightly as the

bus screeches to a brake and a few verbal abuses too. This is just a day in the life off your average daily bus commuter, which shouldn’t be so if the concerned abided by the rules. There are other issues too that are created because of the negligence of authorities to implement the rules and punish those who go against them. The ripples of these actions or non-actions as you would like to phrase them are felt by the common man – young students, women, senior citizens, the economically challenged – most who find alternative sources of public transport too expensive to travel on a daily basis. The AGPBOA has called together delegates from MARG, GOACAN, political leaders, student unions, the director of transport and commuters to discuss these issues and more. This is your opportunity to voice out yours.

ollywood superstar Jodie Foster has been accused of assaulting a teenager in a crowded mall but the actress has denied the allegations. The Academy winning actress who is famously reclusive, said that the boy was a paparazzo who tried to photograph her two children and she merely asked him to stop. The incident happened at a Los Angeles mall, where Foster was seeing a film with her two young sons, Charles, 11, and eight-year-old Christopher. The alleged victim’s father, who did not want to be named, has accused Foster of attacking his 17-year-old son in the shopping centre’s car park, reports sources. “My son was with his girlfriend and they were going to see a movie. He saw Jodie Foster and is a big fan so went over and took a picture of her. But she pushed and shoved him leaving scratches and bruises on his arm,” he said. But the 47-yearold actress has spoken out against the allegations, with her spokesperson claiming that the teenager was a paparazzo. “He had a large camera bag and 1000mm telephoto lens. He tailed Jodie and followed her all the way from the movie theatre to the valet. He crowded her and her two young children and took photos of them the whole time,” said the spokesperson. The spokesperson added that the actress then went up to the teen and asked him to stop.

The Emotion of the Fado S

inging the fado is an art by itself. In Goa no one has forwarded this art better than Sonia Shirsat. And now we have an audio treat that has the emotion-filled voice of Goa’s ‘Rainhia do Fado’ herself. Fado is a piece of music that has emotion written all over it. It is music with no regular or predetermined beat and the melody moves in waves to accommodate the emotion. Sonia, with her expression and depth of feeling, brings out the true sentiment of the fado very forcefully in her singing. Her voice adds to the poignant mood that is surely part of the album ‘Saudades de Fado’. ‘Fado dos Horas’ is a good beginning on the album. To the accompaniment of the traditional musical instruments used for accompaniment in a fado: the Portuguese guitar and the ‘viola’ (Spanish guitar), Sonia lets the melody, the voice and of course the emotion actually do all the singing right from the very beginning. She continues in the same vein with ‘Conta Errada’. The good showing goes on with ‘A Chave da Minha Porta’ with her expressive ways and the catchy beat. She follows with ‘Cansaço’, ‘Ate? Que a Voz me Doa’, ‘Duas Fontes’,

the Abegg variations, Schumann’s first published work, a witty musical cryptogram that has five notes as its nucleus. The second film clip had Sir Clifford Curzon playing Kinderszenen (Scenes from Childhood), a suite of 13 pieces that showcases Schumann's musical imagination at the peak of its musical clarity. The preceding talk by Dr Dias also discussed the background to these works.

“I was very excited when I was offered the role of St Anthony by Prince Jacob in 2007. I have performed the role for 107 shows with all my heart. Even after completing the tiatr I never felt tired or worn out. I was always feeling fresh; maybe it was the grace of St Anthony whose role I was playing. It is difficult to play a devotional role as everyone’s eyes are on you,” says Anthony San who was recently awarded the Tiatr Academy Award for Best Singer at he hands of Dr Francisco Colaco. A singer, actor, composer, musician, writer and director, Anthony San Fernandes hails from Sanvordem. He debuted in Remie Colaco’s tiatr, ‘Don Kalzam’ and won the Goa Cultural and Social Centre award for best singer in 1978 followed by the Kala Academy Award for best singer in 1979. Known for his melodious voice, Anthony has acted for all major directors like M Boyer, Jacint Vaz, Roseferns, Robin Vaz, Rozario Rodrigues, Prem Kumar in his illustrious career. He directed his first tiatr, ‘Darvontto’ in 1984 apart from ten other tiatrs including ‘Mhaka Tuji Goroz’ in 2008. “I am still ambitious to work in the field of art. I am currently working on a Hindi pop album and a Konkani film. I would like to advise today’s youngsters that without hard work, one cannot attain anything,” says Anthony San. He is often accompanied by his daughter Clarissa who is also a singer and actor and his son Clifton, who plays the keyboard.

‘Estranha Forma da Vida’, ‘’Fria Claridade’ and ‘Tive um Coração, Perdi-o’. Included in this album is also the popular fado ‘Barco Negro’ which Sonia does absolute justice to with the articulation in her tone. There is also the lucidity in musical enunciation by Flavio Cardozo (Portuguese guitar) and Miguel Pedro (viola). The musical clarity of the recording is magnificent, all credit to Studio Bizarro, Costa de Caparica, Portugal. It is said that if at the end of a fado performance, if the fadista (fado singer) does not leave you in tears, he or she is not a fadista at all. Sonia does bring about that sentiment of a tearful time of listening pleasure. The tears are not always those of sadness. They would come about more from the intense listening to the passionate expression and emotion.

Chetan knocked out, Saina in final IANS CHENNAI, JUNE 12

Unheralded Indonesian Alamsyah Yunus accepted the unexpected offerings to knock out top seed Chetan Anand 16-21, 21-12, 21-13, to enter the final of Yonex-Sunrise India Open Grand Prix badminton tournament on Saturday. The crafty 23-year old Yunus slowed down the pace to unsettle the 19th ranked Anand, who increasingly grew despondent to virtually gift the match

that lasted 51 tedious minutes. In Sunday's final, Yunus takes on seventh seed Guru Sai Dutt, who put out third seeded compatriot Parupalli Kashyap 21-6, 17-21, 21-15. Later, top seed and World No. 6 Saina Nehwal outclassed Indonesia's Aprilia Yuswandari 2117, 21-11 in the women's singles semi-finals and set up a title clash with second seed Mew Choo Wong of Malaysia who got past Linda Weni Fanetri of Indonesia 22-20, 21-17.

Sania advances AGENCIES COLOMBIA, JUNE 12

Sania Mirza began her Aegon International qualifying campaign with a straight-set win over Mariana Duque Marino of Colombia in Eastbourne on Saturday. The eighth seed Indian carved out a 6-4, 6-4 win over her unseeded opponent in one hour and nine minutes. Playing her second tournament post marriage, Sania saved five breakpoints and broke her rival twice in both the sets to progress to the second round. She next faces local wild card Jocelyn Rae, who beat Russia's Nina Bratchikova 7-6 (4), 6-2 in her first round match of the $600,000 grass court event, which is a build up tournament for the Wimbledon.

Fish stuns Lopez AP LONDON, JUNE 12

Domenech puts brave face on drab draw AFP CAPE TOWN, JUNE 12

Fr a n c e coach Raymond Domenech insists his team have nothing to worry about despite a drab goalless draw with Uruguay in their opening World Cup game. The 1998 champions blew their chance to seize the initiative in Group A after South Africa battled to a 1-1 stalemate with Mexico in the first game of the tournament on Saturday. While Domenech admits he was frustrated not to grab all three points, he said there was no reason to press the panic

button. “It's frustrating when it goes like that, when we push and push and say to ourselves, 'It has to go in'," he said. “But we were also saying to ourselves, 'Let's hope we don't suffer an unlucky counter-attack' because that would have been very disappointing, given the level we played at in this match." France, unsettled by rumoured internal strife and criticised at home for poor form did little to appease their detractors against Uruguay, who played with 10 men for the final eight minutes after substitute Nicolas Lodeiro was sent off for a wild challenge on Bakary Sagna. Domenech chose not to reinstall the country's all-time top

scorer Thierry Henry to the starting 11, and also controversially left Chelsea midfielder Florent Malouda out as well amid rumours of a spat. The benching of Henry left Nicolas Anelka as the solo striker and he was all at sea for much of the match, although Malouda's fill-in Abou Diaby did well enough. Henry and Malouda finally came out in the last 20 minutes but even they were not able to press home the advantage of playing against 10 men. The coach put a brave face on their performance. “It's a shame. I was going to say it was almost a great 0-0, but I would have preferred a bad 1-0," he said. “Our opponents were solid, as you'll see in the coming

matches. We succeeded in stopping them from building almost any moves. As a team, we have performed very well." Manchester United's Patrice Evra, who has taken over the captain's armband from Henry, insisted they controlled the match and could have won. “We could have won. We really wanted to take the three points," he said. “I'm proud of the team as I think we put in a good performance. It's the first match and we needed to win it, but I'm very confident for the rest of the tournament. We controlled the game and we really deserved to win." France, beaten finalists in 2006, did remind everyone of their potential with some slick early play, when Franck Ribery

was at the heart of the best of their attacking forays. But they were unable to keep up the momentum in a turgid match with little goalmouth action. Attention now turns to their next game against Mexico on Thursday in Polokwane, a crunch encounter that both sides need to win. Domenech said he would review the Uruguay clash carefully and then decide on whether he needs to make changes. “I obviously need to think about that and can't give you an answer straight away," he said. “I need to take stock and we will take our time, watch the match again and on that basis see what can or should be done."

Bars run dry as England fans descend on Rustenburg

Brazil players banned from displaying religious T-shirts

AFP RUSTENBURG, JUNE 12

A mass of English and US football fans overwhelmed the South African backwater of Rustenburg Saturday, grabbing a bed for the night in private homes and drinking the bars dry. “I think this is the biggest thing that ever happened to Rustenburg," said Carien Venter, owner of the Loerie-in guesthouse after not only filling out her 11 rooms but also arranging for another 18 people to stay with friends. “And I'm not the only one. A lot of people booked out houses. If I had 100 rooms, I would have sold them all out tonight," she told AFP. Rustenburg, whose name means "Town of Rest" in Afrikaans, is one of the smallest of the nine cities hosting the World Cup. Around 10,000 England fans are expected to pack into the Royal Bafokeng Stadium but most local supporters will also cheer on the Three Lions with English football widely shown on South African television. Four thousand extra seats have been added to the stadium, bring the overall capacity at up to 42,000. Many more are expected to watch on

giant television screens in a fan park in the city centre. Large numbers of local and national police patrolled the streets ahead of a match that has been deemed to have a high terror risk rating. “We have definitely beefed up security for the match by putting additional members in place, bringing sniffer dogs, additional bomb technicians, by putting in place very strict access controls," National police spokeswoman Sally de Beer told AFP. A team of 12 British police officers has also gone to South Africa to help their local counterparts identify possible troublemakers and offer advice on how to handle the supporters, especially when drunk. The English fans began packing out bars from the mid-morning, draping the windows with red and white flags. One watering hole near the stadium, the P.H. Network Cafe, had run out of beer some four hours before kick-off. While England fans have in the past gained a reputation for hooliganism, supporters said they did not feel any trouble was likely this time.

Crowd noise is ‘12th man’, says S Africa skipper AFP JOHANNESBURG, JUNE 12

South African skipper Aaron Mokoena said the raucous crowd was a "weapon" for the home side, praising the way his young team-mates had risen to the challenge in their 1-1 World Cup draw against Mexico. Mokoena was upbeat despite a late goal that denied the hosts a famous victory in front of nearly 85,000 fans at Johannesburg's Soccer City stadium on Friday. Mokoena said the deafening noise from the crowd with thousands of blaring vuvuzela horns was “our 12th man that we need. It's our weapon." “We don't mind vuvuzelas at all."

Midfielder Teko Modise also praised the crowd. “We're encouraged about the support. It's great to see them coming in numbers to support us," he said. Midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala gave South Africa the lead after drilling home following a superb pass from play-maker Steven Pienaar on 55 minutes only for Rafael Marquez to grab a late equaliser. “It was important that we didn't lose the game which is very,

very good. We created a lot of chances, which was very good, we defended well as a team and we take positives out of the game," said Mokoena. “Their strikers are quick and strong and we were worried about them. We needed to be mentally tough and focused at the start. We played really well in the second half and we deserved to win the game, though we need to use this as a springboard and build on it.”

AGENCIES PRETORIA, JUNE 12

Brazil have been told that their players are banned from displaying religious T-shirts during the World Cup, a spokesman for the team confirmed on Saturday. Rodrigo Paiva who is responsible for communications at the Brazil Football Federation CBF confirmed FIFA has told them they are prohibited from displaying anything of a private, religious or political nature. "They have asked us to obey the guidelines," Paiva told DPA press agency. Current FIFA guidelines ban players from displaying messages of political or religious nature. Brazil clash with North Korea at Ellis Park on Tuesday. Past World Cups have seen players from the Selecao display messages on T-shirts.

FIFA looks at opening match empty seats AP JOHANNESBURG, JUNE 12

FIFA is investigating why a section of seats at Soccer City was unoccupied during the World Cup opening match between South Africa and Mexico. The upper tier section of around 200 seats was filled by tournament volunteers later in Friday’s match, which ended 1-1. FIFA said 84,490 people attended at Soccer City, a record for one of its matches in Africa.

Drogba’s absence beneficial for Portugal: Ferreira AGENCIES PRETORIA, JUNE 12

Portugal defender Paulo Ferreira has underlined the impact that Didier Drogba absence could have on the World Cup Group G opener against Cote D'Ivoire on Tuesday. In an exclusive interview with Goal.com, Ferreira highlighted the challenges Portugal face, but he seems confident they can progress. Drogba's recent elbow injury has cast doubts over whether he will play on Tuesday, but Ferreira has warned his side not to let their guard down, regardless of whether the hitman takes to the field. “Drogba is obviously so important to Ivory Coast, he scores many goals for them and he would be a loss for any team in the World if he is not fit," he told Goal.com. “I know him so well from Chelsea, and have so much respect for his ability and his impact on the pitch. He is so strong.” “But of course they have other players who can fill in for him, and while he will be a loss for them if he doesn’t play, the team is not about one player and we have to be wary of so many of their other players when we meet them.”

“But of course I hope that he doesn’t play when we meet him, it would be much better for us." One player who is certain to play in the game is Cristiano Ronaldo. Expectations are high on the Real Madrid man. And, Ferreira believes this could be his tournament. Ronaldo's performances are crucial to Portugal's chances of going all the way it seems. "Everyone knows the quality of Cristiano Ronaldo, it’s no secret. He has improved with every year that he has played, and there is no real weakness to his game," he continued. "He is such a great player. Like Drogba though, our team is not about one player, there are so many players who must play well in the World Cup for us to do well.” “The World Cup is won or lost in such small margins, little mistakes or moments of brilliance make the difference. It is important for us to have Cris-

tiano and it gives us confidence, if we are to do well in the tournament then I think he must play well." But, it's a tough group and there are many questions at issue as to who will progress. North Korea aside and Ivory Coast aside, Brazil will be standing in the way of Portugal's progress. Ferreira addressed the questions regarding the Selecao, trying to deflect attentions from the June 25 clash. “Honestly speaking, we don’t think about Brazil yet, we are focused on the Ivory Coast," he added. “It is important to take one game at a time, and while everyone knows the quality of Brazil, we will prepare for that after we have played the Ivory Coast." No tournament would be complete without the early injuries blows. And what a blow it was for his side when Nani pulled out of the tournament with injury. “Nani was a big Paulo Ferreira loss for us, he was playing so well for Portugal, and we w e re v e r y s o r r y when he left," he said. But we had to move on, and as I said before we have enough quality in our squad, so we can compensate for him not being here."

Dunga bars media from training after flare-ups REUTERS JOHANNESBURG, JUNE 12

Brazil coach Dunga ordered Saturday’s practice to be held behind closed doors after the media reported a flare-up between two players. Television pictures showed defender Daniel Alves and striker Julio Baptista having an altercation during Friday’s practice, the second time an internal disagreement has been reported since the team arrived in South Africa.

Defensive midfielder Felipe Melo criticised the reporting of the incident on Saturday. “We have a great harmony here, it is ridiculous to say there was a fight,” he told reporters.

Messi inspires Argentina to victory

England’s Green gifts US equaliser

S Korea down Greece 2-0

AFP RUSTENBURG, JUNE 12

A blunder by goalkeeper Robert Green shattered England's perfect start to the World Cup as their Group C meeting with the United States ended with the sides tied at 1-1 at Royal Bafokeng stadium here tonight. All goals came in the first session. Steven Gerrard gave England a 4th minute lead but they were sent back to square one, five minutes before the break, when Green allowed Clint Dempsey's tame shot to spin off his gloves and into the net. England had gone from their first foray into opposition territory, taking advantage of some slack marking from the Americans. Picking up a Glen Johnson throw-in from the right, Frank L ampard threaded a pass through to Emile Heskey on the edge of the area. The Aston Villa striker's reverse pass perfectly anticipated Gerrard's untracked surge into the box and the Liverpool midfielder finished deftly with the outside of his right boot.

Lionel Messi conjured a spellbinding opening to the World Cup highlighting Argentina's 1-0 win over Nigeria in their Group B match at Ellis Park Stadium on Saturday. The world's best player was in irresistible form as the twotime world champions dominated Nigeria, but only had Gabriel Heinze's sixth-minute goal to show for their superiority in an exhilarating spectacle before 55,686 noisy fans. Messi taunted the Africans with his mesmerising skill and virtuosity and was denied his first goal at South Africa 2010 only by the acrobatic saves of Nigerian goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama. With coach Diego Maradona prowling his sideline technical area for the whole match, Argentina could not find the second killer goal as the uninhibited Nigerians came close several times in the sec-

Algeria meet Slovenia AGENCIES PRETORIA, JUNE 12

England and the USA start as heavy favourites to progress from Group C, but Algeria and Slovenia will want to display that they are not the underdogs they have been portrayed by many. If either nation wants to have a realistic chance of making progress in South Africa, a win in their opening clash is likely to prove vital. Algeria, in particular, have almost been wholly discounted from the competition. Given a zero per cent chance of lifting the trophy on July 11 by the Castrol World Cup predictor – one of only three teams to have such an ignominious standing at the start of the tournament – the North Africans have it all to do in order to progress even to the last 16. Few teams have endured such a difficult conclusion to their qualifying campaign. After losing 2-0 to Egypt in the final match of their group, they were exactly tied with the Pharaohs, necessitating a one-game playoff in neutral Sudan. With political tensions between the North African nations escalating, the Fennecs showed their character to come through with a 1-0 win against the side which would ultimately be crowned continental champions. Slovenia are not a side which should be taken lightly by any of their group stage opponents, having conceded a meagre six goals en route to the finals, including two nervy play-off matches against Russia, which Matjaz Kek’s side ultimately edged. This will be the nation’s second appearance at FIFA’s showpiece and first since 2002. In Japan and Korea, the Slovenians failed to shine, unable to pick up even a solitary point.

ond half to grabbing an equaliser. It was a rasping Messi volley tipped over the bar by Enyeama that indirectly led to the only goal in the opening minutes. Sebastian Veron's corner picked up unmarked Heinze hurtling in late and the Marseille defender headed powerfully past Enyeama to send the large contingent of Argentine fans wild. Argentina had numerous scoring chances, none more so than Messi's charge on goal nine minutes from time. Yet again he was thwarted by Enyeama's blocking feet to keep the Nigerians in the game. On another occasion Carlos Tevez triggered a counter-attack from deep inside his own half in the 65th minute and set up Messi only for him to shoot agonisingly past the post with Enyeama beaten. Left-back Taye Taiwo came closest for Nigeria in the second half with his thumping volley just fizzing

past the far post on 71 minutes. But the Nigerians made the openings only to spoil their chances with errant finishing with Hoffenheim's left winger Chinedu Ogbuke Obasi going close on a couple of occasions in the first half. Argentina's Newcastle United defensive midfielder Jonas Gutierrez and Nigeria midfielder Lukman Haruna picked up yellow cards in the match. Argentina have won all three of their matches with Nigeria at the World Cup after winning 2-1 at the 1994 tournament in the USA - Maradona's last international appearance as he was then sent home in disgrace for failing a drugs test - and 10 at the 2002 Korea/Japan edition. Nigeria's last victory at the World Cup was back in 1998 when they beat Bulgaria 1-0 and since then the Super Eagles have lost five games and drawn one.

Germany aiming for emphatic win AP DURBAN, JUNE 12

Germany want more than a simple victory when they begin their World Cup schedule on Sunday. It is after an emphatic win over Australia. A lopsided decision could prove that Germany’s young team is a legitimate title challenger in South Africa, even without captain Michael Ballack. The Chelsea midfielder is out after injuring his right ankle in his club team’s FA Cup victory over Portsmouth. But coach Joachim Loew still has a wealth of talent at his disposal for Sunday’s Group D match in Durban as Germany seeks their fourth World Cup title, and first in 20 years. “We want to start with a win, to give the team another shot of confidence,” Germany captain Philipp Lahm said. “It’s a young

team and the players are hungry.” The second-youngest German World Cup squad has an average

age under 25. “We can go in with confidence, but we have respect for Australia,” Loew said. “It’s a well-organized team. Not spectacular, but they work hard, they

have exceptional organization, good passing, they are incredible physically and they have almost perfect defense organization.” Even so, Loew added, “We want to be able to embarrass opponents with our playing skills.” Australia for ward Harr y Kewell concedes that facing Germany will be an uphill battle for the Socceroos. “Let’s face it, we’ve probably hit the hardest team in the World Cup to come up against, especially first off the bat,” Kewell said. Australia’s Dutch coach Pim Verbeek has built his squad around a nucleus of stars from the 2006 World Cup: goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, Kewell and his Galatasary teammate Lucas Neill, and Everton midfielder Tim Cahill.

Green had his first save to make from a Clint Dempsey header as the Americans began to threaten and England had a significant let-off when Jozy Altidore outjumped Ledley King to meet Landon Donovan's chip only to direct his header wide of the target. England were forced into a change on the half hour mark when James Milner, who had been booked for a foul on Steve Cherundolo, was replaced by Shaun Wright-Phillips. The Americans were enjoying plenty of the ball but England looked comfortable until Green's 40th-minute blunder. Dempsey turned past Gerrard on the edge of the box and unleashed a low drive. There seemed no danger as Green bent to gather the shot but somehow he managed to place his gloves in the wrong place and the ball slithered off his right hand and over the line.

Even though injured, Beckham still at World Cup AP RUSTENBURG, JUNE 12

The most famous man in Royal Bafokeng Stadium didn’t play for either team on Saturday night. He was wearing England’s blue training clothes during Friday night’s practice, kicking a ball just like the 23 players eligible to suit up in the famous white jersey. David Beckham won’t be appearing in his fourth World Cup, though. The 35-year-old midfielder tore his left Achilles’ tendon while playing for AC Milan on March 14 and will miss the entire tournament. Still, he’s with the Three Lions lending support and giving advice. US has Donovan who also plays for Los Angeles Galaxy but hasn’t talked with Beckham recently. “He’s a spy. He’s not going to speak to me,” the American said

playfully this week. Donovan criticized Beckham in a 2008 book, but the two have since made up and helped the Galaxy reach last year’s Major League Soccer championship game. Now, as often happens in the World Cup, club teammates are on opposite sides. While the bond of being in the same locker room is temporarily broken, mutual admiration remains. “David has been terrific in every way,” Donovan said. “I think he would tell you that initially it was difficult on the field for him to understand the way the game is played in our country but like he always has, he’s adapted well. And, obviously before the injury he was a big part of our team last year.” “Off the field I think he is equally clear. I think he’s almost single-

handedly brought an awareness to our game that wasn’t there before,” Donovan added. “It would be one thing if he did that subconsciously without knowing and without putting effort into it, but he puts a lot of effort to helping grow the game in our country, and I think we all appreciate that.” A former Manchester United and Real Madrid star, Beckham joined the Galaxy in 2007 and gave an instant boost to MLS attendance, if not to the Galaxy’s onfield fortunes. He went on a half-season loan to AC Milan in January 2009 and again in January 2010, wanting to prove to England coach Fabio Capello that he would keep the sharpness necessary to become the first Englishman to appear in four World Cups. But then came the injury sustained

while playing in a Serie A match against Chievo Verona, one that occurred while he wasn’t even being challenged for the ball. Soccer’s most charismatic player - if never quite its best - had his dream shattered. He came to South Africa anyway to be with the lads, even scouting for Capello at last weekend’s exhibition between the U.S. and Australia. He’ll miss most if not all of the Galaxy season while the foot heals, and his England career may be over after 115 international appearances, second only to goalkeeper Peter Shilton’s 125 from 1970-90. Becks hasn’t been a shut-in in his Los Angeles-area home. Even while an active player, the twotime FIFA player-of-the year runner-up assumed the role of a goodwill ambassador and promoter, following the path set by Pele in the 1970s.

Argentina............1 South Korea.......2 England..............1

AGENCIES PORT ELIZABETH, JUNE 12

South Korea opened the World Cup like it wanted to repeat its 2002 run to the semifinals. Greece looked like it was stuck in 1994. Lee Jung-soo and Park Ji-sung each scored and South Korea won 2-0 over lackluster Greece in Saturday’s first Group B match. Playing in its seventh consecutive World Cup—including its 2002 appearance in the semifinals, when it co-hosted the tournament with Japan—South Korea controlled the tempo from its first scoring chance on. Greece has only been to the tournament once before, in 1994. Back then, the Greeks let Argentina score just two minutes into the opening game. The Greeks improved this time around—by five minutes. A South Korea supporter celebrates after her team defeated Greece 2-0 on Satuday.

Nigeria............0 Greece............0 USA.................1

Ki Sung-yong curled in a free kick from near the left corner flag in the seventh minute, and the ball brushed the top of Konstantinos Katsouranis’ head before reaching Lee at the far post. The central defender tapped it into an unguarded net. Park Ji-sung doubled the lead in the 52nd with a slick solo goal. The Manchester United midfielder intercepted a misplaced pass from Vassilis Torosidis and skipped past two defenders before slipping a shot beyond goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas. Striker Park Chu-young had another three chances to score for South Korea, and Fanis Gekas had a shot saved with 10 minutes left in what was Greece’s best chance. Greece coach Otto Rehhagel stood on the sideline at the end of the match, his hands on his hips and a fierce scowl on his face.
