As a follow up to the talks between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani, India has decided in-principle to resume bilateral cricket ties with Pakistan. Government sources said the time of the visit, the venues of matches and other logistical issues would be decided by the cricket boards of both countries. Sources said if everything goes according to the plans, Indian cricket team will visit Pakistan first and the cricket team of that country will pay a return visit. However, there is no slot available for Indian cricket team to visit Pakistan in the immediate near future. According to the Future Tour Schedule prepared by the International Cricket Council, Pakistan should visit India for three tests and five One Day International series

in March 2012. When contacted, BCCI VicePresident Rajiv Shukla and Chief Administrative Officer Ratnakar Shetty said they were not aware of any decision to resume bilateral cricketing ties. Before the World Cup semifinal match at Mohali on March 30, India last played against Pakistan at an Asia Cup match in June 2010 at Dambula in Sri Lanka. The last bilateral cricket series between India and Pakistan was

held in 2007-2008 when the Pakistani team had visited India. No international cricket team has visited Pakistan to play any match after the terror attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team on March 3, 2009, when six members of the visiting team were injured. Six Pakistani policemen and two civilians were also killed in the incident. The security situation in Pakistan continues to be a source of serious concern for international cricketers. Plans to launch a premier league and invite Sri Lanka to play in a series later this year have been put on hold. Officials in the PCB have confirmed that other boards had in recent meetings in Sri Lanka made it clear that their players were reluctant to travel to the crisis-torn country for the Pakistan Premier League (PPL) Twenty20 competition because of security fears.

Activists file police complaint for land grab

Disqualification motion against brother, wife

Civil society activists on Wednesday filed a police complaint against the State Revenue Minister Jose Philip D’Souza and other government officials of corruption and financial irregularities. In their complaint letter to the Vigilance Department, Ketan Govekar and two others have also alleged illegal land grabbing. The location of the land is however not mentioned in the complaint letter. “The area, which falls under CRZ, has been shown to be out of the CRZ to avoid demolition and to use the area illegally for other purposes,” the complainants have further said alleging involvement of CRZMA officials. Besides the minister, the complaint copy has named the minister’s brothers – Pascoal, Clemente and Jose Niclau, Mormugao chief officer, Mormugao municipal council and other government officials. The case is yet to be registered though.

The BJP and ruling councillors of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) have accused Revenue Minister Jose Philip D’Souza of misusing his ministerial power to grab municipal land for his personal benefit. The MMC on Wednesday convened an emergency meeting after sections of media reported that D’Souza has grabbed land at Khariwaddo for his personal and family’s benefit. During the meeting, the councillors unanimously demanded that a thorough inquiry should be conducted in the entire episode by the Vigilance Department to unearth assets and properties of D’Souza and his family members, since the time D’Souza has held the revenue portfolio. Councillor Carlos Almeida moved a disqualification motion under Section 44 of Goa Municipal Act 1968 against Councillor Pascoal D’Souza,

Just petty issue, claims minister HERALD REPORTER VASCO, APRIL 13

Dismissing it as a ‘petty political issue’, Revenue Minister Jose Philip D’Souza has stated that his rivals are unnecessarily dragging him and his family members since there is no political issue left. Refuting allegations that he has grabbed land at Khariwaddo for his family, D’Souza said: “People from Vasco know that ‘Villa Domrine’ is originally a residential house as my grandfather and entire family was born at that place which today has been termed as ‘land grabbed’ by my rivals”. High turnout in TN, Kerala, Puducherry PTI CHENNAI, APRIL 13

An average of nearly 78 per cent voters exercised their franchise to elect new Assemblies in the key southern States of Tamil Nadu and Kerala and the Union territory of Puducherry today. While Tamil Nadu and Kerala registered a turnout of 75.21 per cent and 74.4 per cent respectively, in Puducherry it was the highest at 85.21 per cent, Deputy Election Commissioner J P Prakash told reporters in Delhi. Prakash said polling was by and large peaceful and the percentage was likely to go up. However, in Salem in Tamil Nadu, a 58-year-old AIADMK sympathiser died in a stampede after police baton charge to disperse those gathered around a polling booth. Later, AIADMK sympathisers blocked the Sivathapuram main road. They also damaged police vehicles by pelting stones. Election officials kept a strong vigil amid allegations about money distribution to voters in a last ditch effort to lure voters, especially in Tamil Nadu. Prakash said Rs 54.17 crore in cash was recovered during the drive against use of money power during electioneering in

Tamil Nadu. Live web casting was carried out in all the three elections. For the first time, 8,835 overseas Indians voted in Kerala which had seen 74.4 per cent polling in the 2006 polls. The electoral fortunes of three top guns of the south — Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi (86), his Kerala counterpart V S Achuthanandan (87) and AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa (63) among others will be known on May 13. Moving away from his constituency in the city, Karunanidhi sought election from rural Tiruvarur segment in his home district for the first time while his arch-rival Jayalalithaa opted for temple town of Srirangam where her family has roots. Other political heavyweights among the 2,773 candidates are Karunanidhi’s son and Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin (Kolathur on Chennai outskirts) and actor-politician Vijayakant of DMDK (Rishivandyam). In Kerala, Kannur district, known for clashes between rival party cadres, topped in voter turn out recording 80.4 per cent while the lowest was reported from Pathanamthitta (68.2) closely followed by capital Thiruvananthapuram (68.5).

Students Union warns against reviewing concession scheme HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, APRIL 13

Nationalist Students Union of India (NSUI) has warned of a massive agitation if private bus operators force reviews the 50 per cent concession scheme to the students. NSUI will be also approaching Chief Minister Digambar Kamat

and Transport Minister Ramkrishna Dhavalikar, seeking Government’s inter vention to address the issue. Students are availing the 50 per cent concession in ticket fares after a massive agitation in 1978 by students’ Union in the State. Talking to Herald NSUI Goa

unit chief Sunil Kawthankar said that NSUI strongly protests against the bus operators’ demand and serious steps would be taken if they tried to review the scheme. “ We won’t tolerate any change in the scheme. It’s a right of every student. This being a (Continued on page 2)
