With the State government refusing to accede to their demands, the All Goa Private Bus Owners Association (AGPBOA) has decided to go ahead and pull out their buses from Friday. The State government meanwhile has requisitioned buses from other States to make up for the shortfall. Around 500 buses under the banner All Goa Private Bus Owners Association (AGPBOA) will go on indefinite bus strike from April 15, as the government has failed to accept their list of demands. However, various sections of private bus operators have not shown interest towards the strike and have decided to run their business. AGPBOA general secretary Sudip Tamanakar said that the association will go ahead with their proposed strike with or without the support of bus operators, who are not their members. “They are beloved of RTO’s. We are not going to force anyone but those who feel that we are fighting for genuine cause, are free to support us,” he said.

NO BACKING

“We have clearly said that ‘we will not support the strike’, as time and again going on strikes and taking passengers for ransom is wrong.” — Bus owner The indefinite hunger strike called by the AGPBOA members, has entered into the third day today. Though the Directorate of Transport office, housed at Junta House remained closed on Thursday to mark the birth anniversar y of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, the members preferred to hold a hunger strike in front of their office. Meanwhile, the government has requisitioned around 75

buses from Karnataka and Maharashtra, to run on State routes. The Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL) will also be adding up 30-odd additional buses to their present operational fleet. “We are well equipped to cater to the strike. But we don’t feel that it would be a success as almost 50 per cent bus operators, will run their business,” (Continued on page 12)

Finally, the Goa government has apparently decided to roll back its decision to have a convention centre in the INOX multiplex courtyard. Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said that the State had shortlisted INOX courtyard as ‘one of the places to have a mini-convention centre.’ “It was not even a convention centre. It was a festival theatre,” he said adding that there are couple of more places identified, which are being considered for this project.
