End violence, let’s talk: PM tells Kashmiris PTI NEW DELHI, AUG 15

In a firm message, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today asked agitating Kashmiri youth to end violence saying it would not benefit anyone even as he offered to carry forward the dialogue process within the framework of the State being an integral part of India. Addressing the nation on the 64th Independence Day against the backdrop of recent unrest in Kashmir, he said the Indian democracy has the “generosity and flexibility” to address concerns of any group. In his 35-minute speech from the ramparts of the historic Red Fort, Singh said India is willing to resolve differences with Pakistan through discussions but the dialogue cannot go far if terrorism emanating from there does not end. He also spoke about the “serious challenge” posed by Naxalism to internal security and stressed the need for rising above “personal and political interests” to deal with the menace firmly through Centre-State cooperation.

2 fishermen drowned at Candolim HERALD CORRESPONDENT CALANGUTE, AUG 15

Two fishermen drowned, while two others swam to safety, after their motorboat capsized near the stranded vessel River Princess at Candolim on Sunday morning. According to Calangute police, Sanjay Harmalkar (29) and Sadanand Kandolkar (64), both from Tinto Vaddo, Nerul, drowned after their motor boat capsized due to heavy underwater currents near the stranded vessel River Princess. Gopal Krishna Kandolkar (43) of Nerul and Bholaram Das, residing at Keri, swam to safety. Police further informed that Kandolkar’s body was traced, while Harmalkar’s body is missing. also seated in the same VIP enclosure behind him at the highly secured Bakshi Stadium, threw the brown shoe but the chief minister remained unfazed saying it was a better way to protest than pelting stones. Four of the 15 policemen who were suspended pending inquiry were of sub-inspector rank. It was not immediately

known how he gained entry into the enclosure amid suggestions that he may have used one of the invitation cards sent to politicians. The incident occurred while Omar was taking salute from the marching contingents after unfurling the tricolour at the main official function. The shoe landed on the ground in front

of Omar who did not stir. Shoe throwing is becoming a trend in protests with several politicians being targeted starting from President George W Bush in Iraq in December 2008. A shoe was also flung by a journalist at Union Home Minister P Chidambaram during a press conference in New Delhi in April 2009.

Goa will have its own State level bravery awards, which will be given to brave-hearts annually on State Liberation Day, Chief Minister Digamber Kamat announced on the occasion of Independence Day, today. “There are few such incidents which really touch your heart. In the past we have seen many people risking their lives for the sake of others. But their bravery was unseen. Hence we have now decided to constitute a bravery award from December 19, this year onwards for such bravehearts,” Kamat said. He said that the award will recognize the brave acts of our common heroes. “There are ample of examples, where these people have rush to save someone’s life without even bothering about their own lives and families,” Kamat stated. The chief minister was addressing an Independence Day gathering at the Old Secretariat, this morning. Kamat said that every issue in the State should be dealt with consensus. “Not a single issue should be decided without consensus,” he added. On the occasion, Kamat praised, Goa’s first Chief Minister Dayanand Bandodkar for having great dreams for the State. “Even being liberating 14 years after Indian independ-

ence and missing two five year plans, the State has done a tremendous progress in almost all fields,” he applauded. Kamat informed that the State is working towards a roadmap for its future and the high level committee under leadership of Dr Raghunath Mashelkar is working on the plan. The chief minister said that the State government is trying to give good governance for which it accepts wholehearted support from the common man. “Whatever we do is for the sake of common man and their suggestions are always welcomed,” he claimed. On the occasion, Speaker of Goa legislative assembly Pratapsingh Rane, leader of oppos i t i o n M a n o h a r Pa r r i ka r, Transport Minister Ramkrishna Dhawalikar and few other legislators were present. At the function, the chief minister awarded police medal for distinguished service to Vinay Veerendra Chaudhary (IPS) Senior Superintendent of Police, Administration, Security and Traffic. The government has considered his outstanding contribution to the maintenance of public order, excellence in detections and overall improving the functioning of the police department while awarding the Police Medal.

Churchill-Mickky split wide open Alemao slams call for probe on roads HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, AUG 15

Public Works Development Minister, Churchill Alemao slammed former Tourism Minister, Mickky Pacheco for demanding a probe into the bad condition of roads, asserting that the condition of many a road in Benaulim constituency is bad because of the neglect by the local legislator. Alemao further demanded to know the fate of crores of ru-

pees spent by the tourism department for beach cleaning in the State. He said the State has now got a good and efficient tourism minister in Nilkant Halarnkar and announced that shacks will now be alloted to the owners by September without any bribes. Without taking Pacheco’s name, a visibly upset PWD minister said “If the roads in Benaulim, Colva, Majorda are in

Games venues missing loos? PTI NEW DELHI, AUG 15

No toilets around Commonwealth Games venues? With sev e re d e l a y s p l a g u i n g streetscaping works around CWG venues, authorities are now facing this embarrassing prospect. The Delhi government had given contract to four firms to install street furnitures like toilets, kiosks, information boards, iron chairs and benches on a BOT (build, operate, transfer) basis in areas around the Games venues. However, the companies are yet to start the work as the streetscaping projects are yet to be completed around most of the venues. The government had, in fact, planned to install street furnitures in all the areas across Delhi where streetscaping has been carried out but due to time constraints the plan was shelved and instead it was decided to put up the facilities around the venues. “We had given contract to the private firms to install the facilities on a BOT basis for next 15 years,” the official said. Wary of time constraints, the firms have been told to install at least toilets in the areas around the Games venues after completion of the streetscaping works. “We have told them to install the toilets first and then, if possible, the kiosks.” Various information related to the Games, medical facilities as well as all basic information related to the city will be made available in the kiosks.

He said government will not invest any money on the street facilities and instead get a share of revenue to be generated by the companies from advertisement on the installations. The firms which were given the contract include JCDecaux, Graphic Ads and a Hong Kongbased company. JCDecaux is an international company and has presence in 46 countries. It has already installed 197 bus shelters in the NDMC areas during the last two years. Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today apologised to the people of the city for inconvenience and difficulties arising out of the ongoing Commonwealth Games projects as well as the heaps of rubble lying on the roads across the capital. “For the last three to four months, Delhiites had suffered due to the construction works undergoing in the city. I apologise to the citizens for this. But if we have to achieve something, then we have to sacrifice,” she said addressing an Independence Day function. Her comments came after the city witnessed massive traffic snarls across all the arterial roads and widespread waterlogging following a spell of heavy rains. Vehicular movement came to a virtual halt as motorists were stuck in jams on almost all the arterial roads across the capital. Officials said the drainage system in several areas had been choked with construction waste resulting in waterlogging.

bad shape, the MLA has not come to me with the request to undertake the road works”. Saying that the Benaulim MLA should stop fooling the people, Alemao said that Zilla Panchayat Chairperson Maria Rebello, Calvert Gonsalves, Agnelo Fernandes from Colva, and the parish priest of Seraulim will also help to get the roads repaired in the constituency. “All the internal roads in Be-

naulim have been put for tenders. Work on topping the roads will commence soon”, he said. Throwing an open challenge, Alemao said no other PWD minister has done so much work in the State in the recent past and told the MLA to stop fooling the people and speak the truth. “This MLA should know that he got re-elected from Benaulim by a thin margin”, he added.
