PF interest rate upped to 9.5 pc PTI NEW DELHI, SEPT 15
Ahead of the festival season, retirement fund manager Employees Provident Fund Organisation’s Trustees raised interest rate on provident fund deposits by one percentage point to 9.5 per cent that will benefit nearly 4.71 crore employees. “We have decided to give 9.5 per cent rate of interest to subscribers during the current financial year on their contributions. For over four crore subscribers this is a big gift from EPFO Trustees,” Labour Minister Mallikarjun Kharge told reporters after a meeting of the trustees. The decision would put an additional burden of Rs 1,600 crore on the EPFO, the minister said, adding that it would be met from the surplus of over Rs 1,731 crore in the interest suspense account. The decision, according to bankers, could see diversion of savings towards Provident Funds as the difference between the fixed deposit rates and PF rates would encourage savings towards the latter.
The all-party meeting on Jammu and Kashmir today decided to send a delegation of political leaders to the State to assess the ground situation but failed to agree on the issue of contentious issue of withdrawal or dilution of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. The marathon five-and-a-half hour meeting witnessed sharp differences over the AFSPA that gives sweeping powers to the armed forces with the People’s Democratic Party and National Conference demanding its revocation or partial withdrawal and parties like Bharatiya Janata Party strongly opposing it. The meeting convened by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and attended by among others

Mandarin, the language spoken by majority of Chinese will soon be part of the Central Board of Secondary Education curriculum as India and China today discussed modalities to train a large number of Indian teachers to acquire the language skills to make it part of the syllabus. “China is our powerful neighbour and emerging as a biggest consumer of global resources. We can not wish it away. The best way to introduce China in India is to introduce its language at primary level so that our kids develop interest and knowledge about China,” Human Resources Minister Kapil Sibal said. The issue figured high on his talks with China’s Education Minister Yuan Guiren, who promised to work out modalities to train Indian teachers in Chinese language in India. “Let us get enough Indians to learn Chinese. Let us have a lot of Chinese trainers in India who will teach the young students in schools. That is how

The visit of the all-party delegation would be facilitated by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the government of Jammu and Kashmir,” the statement said. “The government will take into account the deliberations at today’s meeting while considering measures and initiatives to reach out to the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” it said, adding the feedback received from the all-party delegation would form an important input into the government’s evolving response on various issues relating to the State.

aspirations” must be respected and a magnanimous approach adopted to give them hope. Articulating BJP’s views, Nitin Gadkari supported any dialogue within the framework of the Indian Constitution but not before violence ends. He said the country cannot ignore the fact that terrorism was being aided and abetted by elements in Pakistan and the government should factor this while devising its policies. A statement issued at the end of the marathon meeting said the leaders agreed that the Indian Constitution provides ample scope to “accommodate any legitimate political demand through dialogue, civil discourse and peaceful negotiations.” Accordingly, it was decided that an all-party delegation

There is no other way to do it. we evoke interest in our kids about China. There is no other way to do it,” Sibal told Indian journalists here. Learning it at primary level is better than learning at tertiary level which is more of acidic interest, he said. “I told Yuan I am willing to introduce Chinese in the CBSE system as a course. I can not do that unless I have standards and a there is a test. That can not happen unless I collaborate with you,” said Sibal, who also took part in the World Economic Forum in Chinese city of Tiajin.
The Chinese side said that a two way programme can be worked out to train about 200 teachers said. Sibal said he has already spoken to CBSE Chairman Vineet Joshi and obtained his consent to make Chinese part of its curriculum. It would be introduced as soon as teachers would be available, he added. Sibal has also proposed to China to extend its sponsorship programme to exchange scholars from universities in different subjects on the lines of Full Bright Scholarship. India as a reciprocal gesture will support equal number of students, he said. Sibal, who visited Peking University and held discussions with its officials on various subjects, said the salaries of the staff tallied mostly with that of their Indian counterparts. The university has about 34,000 students out which 20,000 were post graduate students unlike in India where there are more graduates than post graduates, he said.

The government in a cabinet decision on Wednesday has decided to relocate offshore casino vessels within the river Mandovi, a move which has been opposed in the past by civil society groups and the Bharatiya Janata Party. Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said the cabinet agreed to a proposal of casino owners which had been submitted to the Captain of Ports in a meeting recently. As per this proposal three vessels will relocate beyond the two Mandovi bridges towards Ribandar side, while two each will be placed on either side of the river – Betim and Panjim. Kamat said the government will inform the High Court about the cabinet decision by Thursday. Recently five of the seven casino operators had agreed to a new plan suggested by the State government to shift to new locations within the river rather than agree to the earlier proposal to move to Aguada Bay. Two of the operators who were earlier reluctant also agreed to the plan after dilly-dallying initially. The State government feels the relocation will decongest the river to an extent, but the BJP didn’t appear too happy after learning of the decision. Party spokesperson Govind Parvatkar said the present government is run by casino owners. It is not elected by the people, he asserted. The State cabinet in February 2009 had decided to shift these

(Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act. D’Souza said the board will keep under scanner polluting mining leases. Most of these leases that were issued notices have failed to produce necessary clearances from the Forest Department, he stated. Illegal mining that goes unchecked has ravaged the Goan countryside, while the Mines Department has been caught napping. In the monsoon session of the assembly the department came in for severe criticism from Aldona legislator Dayanand Narvekar. Narvekar had pointed to the shoddy staff strength in the department and blamed them for hardly checking how much ore was being extracted over the last so many years. Opposition leader Manohar Parrikar charged that nearly 18 per cent of Goa’s total 40 million mining output comprised of illegally mined ore. He blamed Chief Minister Digambar Kamat and some of the cabinet ministers for allowing illegal mining to flourish in the State.

The casino managements had challenged this decision in the High Court. Voices of the people should be given due consideration, she added.
