Raja’s aide found hanging in room PTI CHENNAI, MARCH 16
In a sensational twist to the 2G spectrum probe, Sadiq Batcha, businessman and a close aide of former Telecom Minister A Raja, died in mysterious circumstances here Wednesday and his wife claimed that he committed suicide “unable to cope with the pressure” of the probe in the case. Police said late tonight that Batcha, whose official and residential premises were raided by CBI and questioned at least four times in the last two months, had left a suicide note in which he had stated that he was “embarrassed” by the raids and the extensive media coverage of the raids. He had also said that Raja is a “good human being”. As the news of his death spread, DMK’s detractors suspected foul play in the death of Batcha with one of them saying he could have been “bumped off ” because he “knew too much”. The 47-year-old Batcha, who was the Managing Director of Greenhouse Promoters, a firm under the scanner of the CBI as well as the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the spectrum allocation scam, was said to have been found hanging from the roof of the bedroom

CM to present budget today HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, MARCH 16
Chief Minister Digambar Kamat will present the State budget for 2011-12 in the Goa Legislative assembly on Thursday. This will be the third time Chief Minister Digambar Kamat will present the State budget in the Assembly. Last year, Kamat had presented Rs 6,788 crore budget on March 23. Observers say that this could be the last budget Kamat will present for the current assembly term. Though the term of the current Assembly will end in early June 2012, indications are that the next assembly election will be held before March 2012. It is in this backdrop that it is said in political circles that the new budget, in all probability, might be a populist one.

Japan’s nuclear nightmare worsened Wednesday with radiation levels surging at a quake-crippled reactor at Fukushima plant, forcing authorities to briefly pull out emergency workers even as another fire erupted slowing desperate efforts to avert a meltdown. With the crisis appearing to be going beyond control, Japan’s Emperor Akihito in a rare address to the nation said he was deeply worried over the developments in the aftermath of last Friday’s massive earthquake of 9.0 magnitude and tsunami. “I sincerely hope from the bottom of my heart that people will, hand in hand, overcome these difficult times by treating each other with compassion,” said the 77-year-old emperor who for the first time appeared in a video message.

Pacheco to the Speaker reads that parents have demanded that the English language be used as first language, which may also be used as the medium of instruction at the elementary level.
“In the present situation, the child finds it difficult and goes to a mental trauma due to the change in scheme of subjects,” the Board has said in their memorandum, submitted to Pacheco. Pacheco, quoting the memorandum said, “They demand that Marathi/Konkani should continue as one of the compulsory language in elementary education.” The Archdiocesan Board feels that students would be in more benefit if English is kept as medium of instruction. “We cannot impose our views on the child but respect the will of the child in the exercise of his/her fundamental rights,” the memorandum reads.
