Thackeray’s grandson enters politics PTI MUMBAI, OCT 17
Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray tonight introduced his grandson Aditya into politics by anointing him as the head of its youth wing at a Dussehra rally which also witnessed three generations of Thackerays sharing the podium. Handing over a sword to Aditya to encourage him in his new endeavour—Yuva Sena, the 83-year-old Thackeray at the same time said he does not believe in “dynasty politics” in the Sena. 20-year-old Aditya, who is making his first major public appearance, is Sena Executive President Uddhav Thackeray’s son. “I never brought Uddhav in Sena. He was made executive president by ‘Krishnakunj’ person (official residence of his estranged nephew and MNS chief Raj Thackeray). In fact, I opposed it, but all the party functionaries accepted Uddhav’s leadership,” he said.

India: Mallika in Murder 2, but Emraan not happy Pg 9 Headley, a double agent? PTI WASHINGTON, OCT 17
David Headley, who confessed his involvement in the Mumbai terror attacks, may have been a double agent who worked for both al-Qaeda, through LeT, and American intelligence agencies, as he was receiving training at terrorist camps in Pakistan. By letting Headley maintain contacts with Lashkar-e-Toiba and other al-Qaeda leaders in Pakistan – as reflected in the court papers submitted by the FBI – federal authorities have said that they hoped to reach the top al-Qaeda leaders. But Headley went rogue and slipped out of their hands. Those handling Headley’s account in the American intelligence agencies said that a decision to arrest him was taken only after he shifted his attention from India to Europe and Headley’s Pak handlers started using him for a Mumbai-type attack in European cities. The information coming from various federal (American) and Indian sources coming out in bits and pieces indicate that at some level intelligence agencies in the US had information about the possible Mumbai attack in 2008 and the key role that he played in this massacre of innocent people by Pakistan-based LeT terrorists. This is possible because federal officials hoped that once Headley’s handlers had full faith in him, they would be able to get access to the top al-Qaeda leaders inside Pakistan. However, another official said that Headley gradually was brainwashed and was leaking out only selective information to the US and started playing only on behalf of LeT and alQaeda leaders who were his contact persons inside Pakistan.
India planning Mars mission in 2030: Kalam
PTI NEW DELHI, OCT 17
Open war broke out between leading lights of the Commonwealth Games with Suresh Kalmadi hitting back at Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today declaring he would not want the Organising Committee, which he chaired, to be the “scapegoats any more.” Kalmadi’s ire was promoted by Dikshit’s comments to PTI yesterday that the “suspicion” of corruption in the just concluded mega sporting event is on the Games Organising Committee (OC). The “real corruption seems to be with regard to the money given as loans (to the OC)”, she said. Central Government had given loans to the tune of Rs 1,600 crore. Slamming Dikshit, a beleaguered Kalmadi, said her aspersions on corruption in the OC were “most disappointing and uncalled for” and that she must indulge in self-reflection on corruption in her own departments. In a hard-hitting statement, Kalmadi said that keeping quiet should not be interpreted as a “sign of weakness”. “But, on Dussehra day, I owe it to the Organising Committee that we speak out. We don’t want to be the scapegoats anymore,” he said. “Delhi Chief Minister Sheila

Fanfare marks Dussehra PTI NEW DELHI, OCT 17
Towering effigies of demon King Ravana, his son Meghnad and brother Kumbhakaran blazed and crackled in fiery splendour as Dussehra, symbolising the triumph of good over evil, was celebrated across the country with fanfare and traditional fervour. Amid beating of drums, devotees, dancing frenziedly, also bid farewell to Goddess Durga as she returned to her
celestial abode. As the skies darkened, the fire crackers-stuffed effigies, dotting grounds and open spaces in villages and towns, went up in flames amid deafening sound. Fire crackers lit up the skies and crowds burst into cheers as the effigies went up in flames on ‘Vijayadashmi’, marking the slaying of demon king Ravana by Lord Rama. Dussehra, which also marks the end of scorching summer
and heralding of winter, is preceded by nine auspicious days of Navaratri during which devotees pray, fast and feast. Ramlilas, vivid enactments from the life of Lord Rama, were staged in large parts of the country during the nine days preceding the festival. In Delhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi were among the dignitaries who watched the evil going up in smoke at the Ramlila Maidan.

Coastlines to have radar sensors
PTI DEHRA DUN, OCT 17
Former President A P J Kalam today said that India is planning to send its mission to Mars in 2030. “We hope that we will be able to send the mission to Mars in 2030,” he said at a school function here. Significantly, Kalam had made a similar announcement here in 2001 regarding the Chandrayaan-I mission to the moon when he was scientific adviser to the government. Answering a question, he said the best way to eradicate corruption in the country is to start a campaign from the home. “For a nation of a billion people, if you ask your father, in case he is unfortunately corrupt, to stop corruption, this is the best way to stop corruption from the home itself. If everybody does that, then corruption will stop,” Kalam told the school children. He said he had been asked this question earlier also at a school function and his answer at that time was the same. Later, Kalam also administered an oath asking the young students to fight corruption. To another question, Kalam said he does not believe in the brain drain theory and said the Indians used to go to other countries to acquire knowledge and wealth in the past also.

The Central government has launched Rs 350-crore project to set up radar sensors along the country’s coastlines for surveillance to prevent terrorists from entering the nation to repeat the Mumbai-type attack. The chain of radar sensors along the entire 7,517-km coastline, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep is being set up by the Coast Guard under a Home Ministry scheme. The radar sensors will be fitted on lighthouses at 46 locations, out of which 36 are in mainland, six in Lakshadweep Islands and four in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
