Illegal religious structures to be Says entire structure will be probed resurveyed: CM PTI NEW DELHI, APRIL 19
After securing the resignation of Union Minister Shashi Tharoor, Government today said entire IPL will be under scrutiny including its funding and vowed not to spare any ‘wrong-doer’, as its top boss Lalit Modi came under the scanner of Income Tax authorities. As the controversy-ridden Indian Premier League faced intense attack from the Opposition and even a Union minister Vayalar Ravi over alleged murky finances, Income tax authorities asked the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) to respond by April 23 to 10 queries, including the one on income from IPL and its en-
Jessica murder: Manu Sharma’s life rap upheld PTI NEW DELHI, APRIL 19
The Supreme Court today upheld the life sentence given to Manu Sharma, son of senior Congress leader Venod Sharma, for killing model Jessica Lall 11 years ago, saying his guilt has been proved beyond reasonable doubt. The apex court also upheld the Delhi High Court verdict convicting and awarding four years jail term to Vikas Yadav, son of controversial Uttar Pradesh politician D P Yadav, and Amardeep Singh Gill alias Tony Gill, the then MNC executive for the destruction of evidence. “We hold that the prosecution has established its case beyond doubt against the appellants and we are in agreement with the conclusion arrived at by the High Court,” a Bench comprising Justices P Sathasivam and Swatanter Kumar said in its 229page judgement.

affairs. A Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into IPL’s source of funds was also demanded. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said “no guilty or wrong-doer” will be spared in connection with the IPL contro-
ED to probe foreign deals PTI NEW DELHI, APRIL 19
Even as the Income Tax department is probing the financial dealings of the money-spinning IPL, the Enforcement Directorate will look into the alleged murky international deals of the tournament. Official sources said the Mumbai wing of the ED had conducted a discreet inquiry into the finances of Rajasthan Royals in 2008 and had prepared a report of alleged Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) violations.
versy and that all aspects including the sources and routes of funding of teams will be thoroughly probed. In Mumbai, a senior IT official said the IT department probing alleged financial irregularities in the IPL will widen its inquiry into the assets and transactions of high-profile IPl Commissioner and his close associates including their financial interests abroad. Ravi, a senior Congress leader and Overseas Indians Minister, lent weight to the Opposition attack calling the cricket league as “glorified gambling” and wanted the whole system to be looked into by the Government. Passengers asked to defer Europe travel PTI NEW DELHI, APRIL 19
With volcanic plumes disrupting flights for the fifth day, Government today advised passengers to defer travel to European destinations unless it for an emergency purpose. The advisory by the Civil Aviation Ministry came as over 41,000 passengers have been stranded following cancellation of the flights Europe and western countries. With no signs of the volcanic cloud clearing, Government put into operation a multi-pronged strategy. It advised passengers to postpone their travel plans to European destinations unless it is for emergency purpose and absolutely necessary.
Government was also in talks with Greece to allow Indian carriers to pick up or deboard stranded passengers as all flights to and from Europe remained suspended. Air India and Jet Airways operated flights to the US and Canada taking alternative routes to avoid the affected airspace. Civil Aviation Secretary M Madhavan Nambiar said 41,435 outbound passengers in Delhi and Mumbai were affected by the shutdown, adding “the situation is still grim”. The airlines have been urging Embassies and High Commissions here to take care of the affected people from their countries. Most of them are destined for Europe. While Air India and Jet re-
sumed services to the US and Canada through Cairo and Athens respectively, all their flights and those of Kingfisher Airlines to Europe including London, Brussels and Paris, were cancelled today and are likely to remain so tomorrow, their spokespersons said. Nambiar said the Ministry has warned the airlines not to charge excessive fares while asking passengers to re-book their tickets for which the flights have been cancelled. Nambiar said the Civil Aviation Ministry has set up a control room, headed by a Joint Secretary, with officials from Ministry of External Affairs and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation to help those stranded in India.

Hundreds of international holidaymakers have been stranded in the State, with the cancellation of flights at Dabolim airport due to volcanic ash in the skies of Europe. About 1,250 passengers mostly from Europe were stranded in various parts of the State due to cancellation of five incoming flights from their respective destinations, while an equal number of passengers could not arrive in the State due to these cancelled flights, which has affected the hospitality industry. UK will depend on favourable climatic conditions in Europe. Uncertainty also prevails over the Thomas Cook airlines scheduled for Tuesday and if it is cancelled, 322 passengers will be deprived of arriving in the State. “The Thomas Cook flight from Greece is carrying 322 passengers and is scheduled for tomorrow. We are hoping for the best,” said airport manager A K
Das of Freedom Holiday. “If the flight is cancelled, passengers scheduled to board this aircraft at Dabolim airport would be given suitable accommodation as per their package,” Das added. Incidentally, the cancellation of the flights has taken place at the fag end of the charter tourism season in the State, as (Continued on page 10)
HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, APRIL 19
The Chief Minister Digambar Kamat has ordered a resurvey of the unauthorised religious structures on public property even as Hindu Janjagruti Samiti (HJS) has planned a rally on April 22 to condemn Government’s plans ‘to target’ Hindu structures. The decision to resurvey was taken after the issue was raised by Power Minister Aleixo Sequeira at the last Cabinet meeting wherein he pointed out discrepancies in the survey conducted by the Government following Supreme Court orders. Demanding a resurvey he had alleged that the identification exercise was done haphazardly. Giving the example of the 400-year old Verna Church which has been identified as unauthorised, he said though the Government notification says Fabrica is the owner, it had gone ahead and declared it as unauthorised. Quoting the notification, Sequeira said Fabrica de Verna is shown as the owner of the church. Sequeira has demanded that even after the resurvey, sen-
ior Government officers should be asked to verif y what is recorded in the (re)survey. As reported earlier, around 800 structures including temples, chapels and churches besides ghumtis and crosses, masjids have been identified by the State Government as unauthorised on government land as well as communidade property. Interestingly, even as resurvey has been planned, the Government has also set up a committee headed by the Chief Secretary to go into the issue on case-to-case basis. On Monday, HJS at a press conference here said it had no problem if Government decided to relocate these structures but opposed relocation of some temples particularly the old ones. HJS Convenor and spokesman Jayesh Thali demanded to have a proper case study of all these structures before declaring it legal or illegal and demolishing it. (Continued on page 10)
