ESMA to put brakes on stir? HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, NOV 19

In a major blow to the striking bus operators, the State government today invoked the Goa Essential Services Maintenance Act, 1988 (ESMA) onwards prohibiting strikes in any form. Transport Minister Ramakrishna Dhavalikar said “The operators are unnecessarily striking. They will cause loss to the people,” adding that the strike during the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) will carry a wrong impression on people visiting Goa. Dhavalikar said that those

buses participating in the strike will have their temporary permits cancelled. The All Goa Private Bus Owners Association has called for a strike on Monday protesting against the government’s apathy to adhere to their demands. The association has expressed their unhappiness over disallowing private buses to operate from Margao old bus stand. They have also claimed that Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL) was harassing them and that government has failed to stop the same.

Galaxy of stars to light up IFFI

Madhuri Dixit, Ajay Devgan and Freida Pinto HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, NOV 19

Galaxy of stars including Madhuri Dixit, Ajay Devgan, Freida Pinto, Manoj Bajpayee will make their presence felt for the 41st edition of International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2010. South Indian film legends like Mani Ratnam, veteran film producer Dr D Rama Naidu and Revathy Menon, will also attend the 10-day festival, beginning from November 22. Director of Film Festival S M Khan also confirmed the presence of renowned singer Ila Arun along with Subhash Ghai, Manisha Koirala, Rima Sen and Raima Sen for the festival. The festival will be inaugurated with the Om Puri starrer movie West is West, a movie sequel to East is East (1990).

Khan said that the screening of West is West movie will mark the inaugural of the festival, which has the competition section of international cinema open globally. The film is on an Indian origin family from Punjab and their younger sibling. The director feels that the competition would be tough this year as the best movies will be screened for the festival. “This year films from Canada, America and other European countries will be also screened. The section was earlier open only to the films from Asia, Africa and Latin America,” he stated. Legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra is said to be the chief guest for the function along with Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The Congress worry is that the opposition appeared in no mood to yield after getting emboldened from the Supreme Court’s snub on the prime minister delaying for 11 months and then refusing sanction to Dr Subramanian Swamy, president of the Janata Party, to prosecute former Union Telecom Minister A Raja for the 2G scam. With the opposition getting no word from the government to end the impasse, Congress prince charming and General Secretary Rahul Gandhi and HRD and Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal mounted a defence of the prime minister being blamed for allowing the 2G spectrum loot by ally Dravida Munnetra Kazagham’s (DMK) ministers Dayanidhi Maran and A Raja and the Supreme Court chiding him for inaction and silence. “I don’t think he is in an embarrassing position at all,” Rahul Gandhi snapped back when (Continued on page 10)

gets approval HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, NOV 19

Goa may be soon classified as the most well-connected State in the country if government’s attempt to have a cruise service on the Goa-Mumbai route succeeds. The government has in-principle decided to start GoaMumbai cruise service, said an official. The steamer service for Goa-Mumbai was discontinued in 1990 whereas its replacement catamaran died a natural death as it failed to appeal to people. However, the government now wants to start a cruise on Goa-Mumbai sea route once again which will be run on the public private partnership (PPP) mode. “The government has de-

cided in-principle to have cruise on Goa-Mumbai route and things will materialize in a few months time,” said the official. But the question still remains will the cruise service attract people when Goa is well connected through air, rail and road? “Why not? Market does exist which we need to revive — catamaran could not survive. People could not actually enjoy their sea voyage as they had to sit in one place for hours and it was most boring,” the official added. Given the ground realities and the travel options to Mumbai at hand, the cruise services will have to dish out something special to stay afloat in the competition.

India rebukes Iran for plea on Kashmir KASHMIR NEW DELHI, NOV 19

India for the first time did not stand by Iran and abstained on Thursday from the United Nations General Body meeting that passed a Canada-sponsored resolution against its human right violations, in a tit-for-tat retaliation to its spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei equating Kashmir with Afghanistan and Gaza in Palestine.
