Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee will inaugurate the 41st International Film Festival of India (IFFI) on Monday. Addressing a press conference today evening, Chief Minister Digamber Kamat said that Hindi film director Yash Chopra and Bollywood actor Ajay Devgan will be present as the chief guest and guest of honour, respectively for the inaugural ceremony. The 10-day festival will see screening of 300 films from 61 countries. “The films will be screened in eleven auditoriums in Panjim and Margao. Reema Sen will be ‘thali’ girl for the inaugural while actor Aftab Shivdasani and actress Gracy Singh will compere the function,” he told reporters. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni who is unwell will however not make it for the event. The All Goa Private Bus Owners Association (AGPBOW) today withdrew their strike scheduled for Monday following Chief Minister Digambar Kamat’s assurance to resolve their issues. AGPBOA President Sudip Tamankar confirmed the development. “The chief minister met us today and assured he will hold meetings to solve our grievances. Accordingly, we decided to call off the strike,” he told Herald. Even as the National Highway Diversion Committee is gearing up to hold its first meeting at the Lohia Maidan on Monday, Public Works Development (PWD) Minister, Churchill Alemao on Sunday said the government would compensate the land losers with market rate and will start the highway project only after the rehabilitation of the displaced people. Alemao, however, did not spare the non-governmental (NGOs) as he lashed out at them for poking their fingers everywhere by opposing the government’s developmental projects. Alemao said the government is committed to expedite work on the NH-17 and raised apprehensions that the Zuari bridge will collapse within six years if a new bridge is not put in place within the time frame. Under mounting pressure to quit, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa today struck a defiant note and cancelled his visit to Delhi amidst strong indications that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may ask him to step down. The chief minister, who is facing allegations of corruption and nepotism, dropped his plans to fly to Delhi in the evening for a meeting with BJP President Nitin Gadkari who was authorised this morning to take a decision on Karnataka. “The senior leaders have expressed their views in today’s meeting and then authorised me to take a decision on Karnataka. But I will discuss the issue again with Yeddyurappa before taking a decision,” Gadkari said.
