Modi may move court
Plans injunction against April 26 meet PtI MUMBAI, APRIL 22
ODDS AGAINST MODI
The war in the Cricket Board intensified today with Lalit Modi planning to move court against the Governing Council meeting that may oust him from the post of IPL Commissioner as BCCI accused him of hiding details of stake-holding by his relatives in franchisees. The embattled Modi was tonight said to be considering moving the Bombay High Court seeking an injunction against the April 26 meeting where Governing Council member M A K Pataudi says he would be ousted if he keeps away. Some top lawyers are expected to appear for Modi who has contended that the Monday meeting was illegal as only he had the power to convene it. BCCI President Shashank Manohar shed his reticence to attack Modi who had threatened to reveal details of franchise ownership. He also rejected Modi’s contention on the meeting and said it would go ahead as scheduled. He dismissed Modi’s claim of BCCI secretary N Srinivasan having a conflict of interest in owning Chennai franchisee. “Srinivasan was a declared bidder. If Modi and his relatives had a share in any of the franchises, he ought to have de-

In the event, he may be ousted if he keeps away. — M A K Pataudi clared it at the meeting. I was not a member of the Governing Council then. He ought to have told every body,” the BCCI President said. Manohar said that it was the then BCCI President Sharad Pawar who had given Srinivasan permission to bid. It was India Cements, a company which bid and was accepted by the general
body. Manohar also said that Srinivasan convened the meeting not as the owner of the team but was empowered by the Board constitution to do so. Manohar also said it was improper of Modi to think of revealing details of the ownership patterns, saying there were complex legal issues and confidentiality clause. “We have to look at the documents which we have never seen in our life and that’s why we will discuss all issues in the Governing Council meeting, because, if required, we have to take legal opinion in that regard.” He said he had the support of BCCI and Modi himself had earlier agreed not to divulge details but now he was selectively leaking mails. Meanwhile, Pataudi said that Modi should step down if he has so much conviction in his innocence. Asked if Modi should step aside in the best interest of IPL, Pataudi said, “Yes. I think so. Let these allegations and accusations come to some kind of conclusion and let’s see because he’s kept on saying ...for the last few weeks that he’s done nothing wrong. So fine, if he has done nothing wrong, let them take it out.
NCP caught in IPL storm Role of Patel, Pawar’s daughter under scrutiny PtI NEW DELHI, APRIL 22
NCP, an important ally of Congress, was today at the centre of the IPL storm over the alleged role of Union Minister Praful Patel, its leaders and their family members including that of Sharad Pawar’s daughter Supriya Sule in the raging controversy surrounding the cricket league. The party and Sule, who represents Baramati in Lok Sabha, dismissed reports of any wrong doing on the part of the leaders or their family members but Patel himself declined to com-
Blasts rock Bangkok, 3 dead, 70 hurt AFP BANGKOK, APRIL 22
A series of grenade attacks rocked central Bangkok today, killing three persons and injuring more than 70, including foreigners, amid a tense standoff between groups of rival protesters. Five grenades were fired into a crowd in the capital’s business district, said army spokesman Sunsern Kaewkumnerd, where pro-government demonstrators were facing off with their rival “Red Shirts”. Three persons died, according to a local hospital, after the grenades hit the mass of progovernment supporters. Ambulances rushed to the scene to load up bloodied victims after the blasts sent relaxed and cheerful pro-government crowds fleeing from the area.
ment to reports on the controversy surrounding him. It ruled out resignation of Pawar and Patel from the Government. Sule, however, admitted that her husband Sadanand held 10 per cent stake in Multi Screen Media (formerly Sony Entertainment) as a “proxy” for her father-in-law, B R Sule, who was associated with Sony for a number of years. MSM allegedly paid a facilitation fee of USD 80 million to sports management company WSG for securing IPL television rights. With NCP, which has nine MPs
in Lok Sabha and is part of the coalition Government with Congress in Maharashtra, getting sucked into the raging row, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee is believed to have apprised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of the goings on in the IPL, especially on the allegations regarding its sources of funding. He is also understood to have briefed Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Mukherjee, however, said he cannot comment on the tax probe into various IPL franchisees.

All clear for sports policy marks hErAlD rEPOrtEr PANJIM, APRIL 22
Heads of all recognised secondar y and higher secondar y schools (from V to IX and XI) within the jurisdiction of the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education have been directed to declare first the results of students not covered under the sports policy 2009 and subsequently of those benefiting from it after obtaining the requisite authenticated certificates. The circular contains the final modalities for allotment of marks to the students for 2009-10. As per the circular, parents of students awaiting Board (X and XII) results have been directed to submit authenticated certificates of sports participation/achievement to the Goa Board by April 30, 2010.
‘Illegal holy structures in Sanguem can be saved’ hErAlD rEPOrtEr MARGAO, APRIL 22
The high-level committee headed by the South Goa district Magistrate G P Naik, constituted to go into the illegal religious structures in the district has concluded that most of the most of the 51 structures in Sanguem taluka can be regularised after following the due process of law. “There are around 5-7 religious structures which may face t h e a xe o r r e l o c a t i o n i n Sanguem taluka out of the 51 structures identified by the authorities. The committee will make suitable recommendations to the Government in this regard”, Naik told Herald after inspecting Sanguem taluka along with other members of
the Committee on Thursday evening. Naik was confident that apart from the 5-7 structures, the remaining structures on Government land can be regularised or relocated beyond the road widening areas. “The Committee was of the opinion that those structures close to the roads can be relocated beyond 20-30 meters. This way, many structures can be saved from demolition”, he said. Naik said his office is flooded with requests for regularisation of illegal places of worship erected on Government land or land acquired for widening of roads. So far I have received more than 25 applications from different parties from the district
for regularisation of the religious structures which may face demolition as per the Supreme Court orders. “This is the first time that so many parties have applied to the authorities for regularisation of the religious structures”, he said. As reported earlier, Naik does not foresee any problems as far as illegal religious structures are concerned, adding that most of the structures can be saved either by relocation or regularisation. “There is one religious structure in Mormugao taluka which may face the axe, but the administration has opened talks with the religious leaders how best to save the structure by relocating the same some meters beyond the road widening area”, Naik added.
Pak asks India location of terror camps IFtIkhAr GIlAnI ISLAMABAD, APRIL 22
Pakistan is prepared to run over the terrorist training camps of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) on its territory if India gives their exact locations as there is no use just harping on claims that 42 such camps continue to function across the Line of Control (LoC), affirms Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit. Pointing out that LeT is already a banned organisation in Pakistan, Basit told a visiting Indian media delegation that “we are telling them to please tell us where are these camps if you know about them.” He complained that India keeps asserting that these camps should be first destroyed for any dialogue “but when we ask them details, they don’t come up with.”
He also urged India to share with Islamabad the basis for claims that it fears another Mumbai like terror attack. “When the Indian PM or Home Minister says so, they must be saying it on the basis of some information. Share that with us, so that we can pre-empt. Our request is to share any information, intelligence about it to enable us to take action.” Basit asserted that the two
neighbours must cooperate with each other to pre-empt the terrorist strikes rather than engage in blame game. “You will not find Pakistan wanting. Whoever is involved in terrorist activities will be apprehended,” he said, adding that Pakistan doe not have any evidence of linkages between the al-Qaida and LeT. BHUTAN HOPE: He said Pakistan has still not given up the hope that a meeting between
the Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan on the sidelines of the SAARC summit in Bhutan next week may help revive the composite dialogue that India suspended after Mumbai attack. “Bhutan is not yet a missed opportunity. We still have time and we are in touch diplomatically. No formal meeting yet planned,” he said, pointing out a roadmap given to India last September in New York for a step-by-step meetings of officials, followed by foreign ministers and then a summit-level meeting to resume talks. In the run-up to Bhutan, he said Pakistan had proposed meetings of foreign secretaries and foreign ministers so that the two neighbours can announce resumption of the dialogue process in Bhutan.
The certificates, it is stated, have to be authenticated either by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs or the Sports Authority of Goa. It states in case a student has failed in the SSC/HSSC exami-
The circular further mentions, “In case of students failing, the sports marks garnered by a student will be added to the subject or subjects in which he/she has failed, either theory or practicals or both, and the same shall be
