Wanted: leader for UGDP

HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, JUNE 23

The United Goans Democratic Party (UGDP) appears in total disarray, with its lone legislator Babush Monserrate finally embracing the Congress and the regional outfit desperately on the look out for a leader who can lead the party ahead of the 2012 assembly polls. Party leaders knows for sure that the party need to poll minimum six per cent of the total votes in the coming assembly polls or face de-recognition by the Election Commission. Ask party Secretary General Adv. Anacleto Viegas and he admits that the problem facing the party is to re-organise the regional outfit in a big way to serve the State and its people. “The UGDP wants a leader who is committed towards the organization and dedicated to the cause of the State. Most of the present leaders are professionals and part-time politicians”, he said.

In fact, since the party was formed by Raghurai Thamba in the early 90’s, the regional party has been literally lying dormant over the last one year, since the party tasted defeat in the Lok Sabha polls. Viegas admitted that neither the party presidium nor the ex-

party secretary general says only a dedicated leader can help steer the party out of the present state of affairs. “We are on the look out for a leader who will work to reorganize the party”, he said. Incidentally, this is not the first time that its legislators have deserted the party and joined

the Congress. In fact, since the 1994 polls, the party has seen its legislators deserting the party and joining hands with the Congress. And, the trend continued with every election in the last decade and half, with party leaders unable to stop the exodus for varied reasons. “Leaders who have left the party over the years

had no dedication for the State. They have no commitment for the State. They are only after power”, Viegas said. But, when pointed out that many of these legislators who had left the party were reelected on other parties, Viegas replied “These leaders have got re-elected because of the blatant use of money power. “PWD Minister Churchill Alemao, Revenue Minister, Jose Philip D’Souza, former Tourism Minister, Mickky Pacheco, besides the education minister were all part of the UGDP at one point of time, only to desert the regional outfit to join the national parties. But, Viegas says the party has a future and would successfully overcome the problems plaguing the outfit. “The UGDP is a people’s party. The party may face de-recognition, but I can say with confidence that the people of Goa would save the Two Leaves symbol”, he said.

Valanka to contest from Benaulim, says Churchill HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, JUNE 23

Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Churchill Alemao’s forays into Benaulim with daughter Valanka may or may not affect former Tourism Minister, Mickky Pacheco in this heartland of many a political battle – with the Benaulim legislator firmly eyeing the new Nuvem seat. But, Alemao’s overt and covert support to daughter Valanka to contest from the new Benaulim seat will certainly ruffle many a feather in the Congress fold and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) camp as well. One, questions will arise whether the Congress will allot

Secondly, will Valanka dare to throw her hat in the ring, in the event the Congress-NCP agree to continue the alliance and the Sharad Pawar-led party stakes claim on Benaulim since the seat is presently represented by the party. The PWD minister does not think these questions will come in the way of Valanka contesting from Benaulim. Thundered Alemao: “Valanka will contest the coming assembly polls from Benaulim. She is a Congresswoman and should get the Congress ticket. But, all I can say now is Valanka would definitely contest from Benaulim.” Whether the Congress would

Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Subhash Shiro d ka r h a s d e c l i n e d t o comment on PWD Minister Churchill Alemao’s decision to field Valanka in Benaulim. When asked whether the Congress party would consider allotting three tickets to a single family in the next assembly polls, Shirodkar quipped “Elections for the Goa legislative assembly are scheduled only in 2012. I don’t want to offer any comment on the matter. succumb to the demands of the Alemao’s for three tickets remain to be seen, but the PWD minister opined there is no harm in allotting three tickets when he has helped strengthen the party in the State. Incidentally, Churchill asserted that he would contest only from Navelim constituency and ruled out the question and all speculations of he moving to neighbouring Benaulim. “I will contest the coming assembly polls only from Navelim, whether the Congress gives the ticket or not. There’s no question of shifting to Benaulim or other constituency”, he asserted. The Alemaos feel that the new Benaulim seat is a sure bet given that more than half the villages comprising the new constituency now form part of Churchill’s Navelim constituency. Barring Benaulim, Colva , the remaining villages of Varca, Orlim, Carmona and Cavelossim now form part of Navelim constituency and the Alemaos think that revival of its touch with Benaulim – which forms the major chunk of voters – should help to win the seat. But, Congressmen appear wary of Churchill’s ambition to expand his base. Says a senior Congressman: “Churchill’s claim on Benaulim for his daughter may find no support in the party leadership. As it is, the party will certainly face the flak for giving two tickets to the Alemao brothers”, he said.

450 Indian students hit as Australia shuts college PTI MELBOURNE, JUNE 23

Careers of over 450 Indian students in Australia has been jeopardised following closure of an Adelaide-based college after it failed audits of the government on the standards of education it was offering. The South Australian government cancelled the registration of the Adelaide Pacific International College (APIC) which failed audits this year. State Education Minister Jack Snelling told parliament that the APIC in Currie Street is no longer registered to operate. The college has as many as 450 students who had come to Adelaide from India. It’s registration will be cancelled from June 28 when it will be removed from the National Training Information Service. The college has 28 days to appeal against the decision. The college breached 12 of 14 national standards, Snelling told parliament, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. Snelling said every effort would be made to place its students in alternative colleges or in TAFE (Technical and Further Education) courses. “I have repeatedly stated students’ welfare is a paramount concern and all available steps will be taken,” the minister said. Snelling said he had spoken with Indian Consul-General Amit Dasgupta and president of the local Indian association MajorGeneral Vikram Madan to advise them of the decision. He said students would be provided with written advice on their rights and obligations through the South Australian Training Advocate.
