Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was at his acerbic best in the Lok Sabha today as he took on the BJP veteran L K Advani to demolish the Opposition attack on him in the cash-for-votes scam. Singh also sought to floor Sushma Swaraj through a couplet in a tit-for-tat after the Leader of the Opposition recited Ghalib’s composition to send home the message that it was time for the Prime Minister to take responsibility. Amid thumping of desks, the Prime Minister smilingly but devastatingly said that Advani has not forgiven him for becoming the Prime Minister. “The main Opposition party,
right from the year 2004, has adopted the attitude that we are a usurper. Advaniji believes that being Prime Minister was his birthright and therefore, he has never forgiven me”, Singh said leaving the Treasury benches in splits. “All I can say to Advaniji is that people of India have voted us to power in free and fair elections. Please wait for another three-and-a-half years,” he said. Singh’s uncharacteristic remarks also drew a broad smile from Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
The Prime Minister chose to use the delicate Urdu couplet of Iqbal to reply to Swaraj’s criticism of his leadership. “Mana ki tere deed ke kaabil nahi hoon main, tu mera shauk dekh, mera intezar dekh (I admit that I am not worth your attention but appreciate my interest and my patience),” Singh said leaving Swaraj without any defence. He was responding to Swaraj’s Urdu couplet — “Na idhar udhar ki tu baat kar, ye bata ki kaafila kyun luta. Hamein rahjano se gila nahi, teri rahbari ka sawal hai (don’t talk about this and that, tell us why the caravan was looted. We have no complaint with the passersby, it is a question of your leadership)”.
“It’s rape of Goa”, said Speaker Pratapsing Rane while bringing to the attention of Assembly how unchecked mining activity is razing down hills and green cover as the House discussed violations by mining companies during Question Hour on Wednesday. The State has lost large forest cover during last four years due to mining – out of the one lakh trees that were permitted to be
cut in last four years, 58940 trees were cut for mining purpose. The Forest Minister Filipe Nery Rodrigues came under fire from all quarters for failure of its Department to strictly check mining companies violating permissions. Canacona MLA Vijay Pai Khot sought to know whether trees are being planted vis-à-vis the number that were cut. However, the Forest Minister was unable to provide a satisfactory answer.
Colva cops accused of theft ` 4.22 lakh, $2000, £3000 missing from car HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, MARCH 23
The Colva police have come in the eye of a storm after one Sean Demont complained to the police higher ups that policemen attached to the station were allegedly involved in theft of cash and other items from his car. Senior police officers, however, said the complaint appears to be factually incorrect, but directed Colva police station incharge, PI Tushar Vernekar to conduct a detailed probe into the episode. In his complaint, Demont alleged that policemen attached to Colva police station lifted Rs 4.22 lakh, besides 2000 US dollars, 3000 pounds and a camera worth Rs 50,000 from his car parked outside his residence at Benaulim. He claimed that he returned
to his place of residence at Lotus Hermitage after his vehicle met with an accident at 11 pm on the road to Benaulim beach. “Within 15 minutes, five policemen came and took me to the station before referring me to Hospicio for a medical examination”, he said. Incidentally, Demont says that when he was being taken from his residence to the Hospital, two policemen, who were standing near his car, took the vehicle key from him and sat inside. Claiming that money stacked in the car was taken by the police without issuing any receipt, Demont has asked Superintendent of Police, South to return his money immediately. Demont’s lawyer, Adv Bairon Rodrigues said the money was seized by the police without (Continued on page 8)
Leader of the Opposition, Manohar Parrikar who joined the debate pointed out the ridiculous answer given by the deputy conservator of forest supporting mining in forest areas saying it boosts GDP growth. “The forest officer should have opposed mining”, Khot said stating there were other departments to worry about the GDP growth.
