Miss Ukraine Anna Poslavska took the fourth place while Miss Philippines Venus Raj rounded up the top five. Anand’s nationality kicks up controversy Game for doctorate after Sibal apology PTI HYDERABAD/NEW DELHI, AUG 24

A move to confer honorary doctorate for Chess icon Vishwanathan Anand was today at the centre of a raging storm after the HRD ministry report-

Several stuck as metro train stops on track PTI NEW DELHI, AUG 24

Thousands of Metro commuters in the capital had a harrowing experience today as services were disrupted for nearly two hours after a train with 500 passengers stopped on tracks inside a tunnel while approaching a station due to a technical fault. Hundreds of people, who had hoped to go to their relatives places to celebrate Raksha Bandhan in Metro, were stranded at several stations in the city. DMRC is running 180 extra trips today on the occasion. The 500 passengers were stuck inside the train for around 90 minutes after it stopped on the tracks a few meters before the Rajiv Chowk station due to a snag in its pantograph, which draws power from the Overhead Electrification Line.

edly raised questions over his Indian nationality but Minister Kapil Sibal stepped in to apologise to him. The HRD Minister, who called Anand over telephone in Hyderabad, said there was no question of his ministry raising queries being raised over Anand’s citizenship and that he has persuaded him to accept the doctorate. But the chess wizard politely

turned it down for the present saying he would accept it on a later date because of his travel schedule and prior commitments. Anand was to have been conferred the honorary doctorate along with Prof. David Mumford of Harvard University at a function here last night coinciding with the current International Congress of Mathematicians in Hyderabad.

Rs 6.6 cr worth diamond heist PTI MUMBAI, AUG 24

Diamonds worth nearly Rs 6.6 crore were stolen from an exhibition here but the daring heist was cracked in less than a day with three Mexicans including a woman and a Venezuelan, who had swallowed the stones, being detained at the Dubai airport. The breakthrough for the Mumbai police was achieved with the help of Interpol after Dubai police swooped on the four jewel thieves on their way to Hamburg when they landed in the Emirate city. The four foreigners were suspected to have been involved in the theft of the 887.24 carat on display in a box at an international exhibition here last evening. Home Minister R R Patil said

tonight “the accused had swallowed the diamonds and medicine was given to purge the valuables out.” The accused identified as Ms Guerrero Lugo Elvia Grissel (24), Campos Molan Elias (39), Gonzalez Madlonado Mauricio (24)—hail from Mexico — and Gutierez Orlando of Venezuela were detained in the wee hours today at the Dubai airport as a look out notice was issued by the Interpol following the theft case registered at Goregaon (East) Police Station here, Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Himanshu Roy said. A Non-Bailable Warrant was issued against the four by a local court and the accused would be shown under arrest after they are brought to the city.

Atala cut contact with counsel early July HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, AUG 24

Defense counsel Swapnil Nashinolkar whose strong arguments helped attain conditional release to his client Israeli drug peddler Yaniv alias Atala Benahim, was struggling to contact Atala for over a month, sources say. Highly placed sources close to Herald informed that ever since his release, Atala was a regular visitor to Adv Nashinolkar’s office at Panjim. He, however, severed contacts with the counsel from early July. Narcotics and Drugs Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Court at Mapusa had granted Atala conditional release on June 23. The conditions asked him to make a payment of Rs 50,000, not to leave the State, not to interfere with investigations and

cooperate with investigating officers. He was arrested on March 11

from a shack at Pernem after the spy cam revelation of his contacts with police officials in

the illicit trade. “Atala last met his counsel at his (counsel) office for the case follow up… since then he did n o t t u r n u p . T h e r e a f t e r, Nashinolkar tried calling Atala on his mobile phone several times but found him out of reach”, said the source. Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) at Mapusa shortly issued a ‘warrant’ against the tattooed drug peddler for failing to remain present in the overstaying trial before the Magistrate. Ironically, earlier even after his release, the police were not serious to challenge his bail order. Police spokesperson Superintendent of (Special Branch) Police Atmaram Deshpande, was quoted saying, “the police will decide on the future course of action only after getting all details on paper…”

Development Ministry put paid to the plans of University of Hyderabad to confer the honour on the 39-year-old champion, who lives in Spain for the last few years but holds an Indian passport. As reports on the unsavoury episode broke out in the media, Sibal sought to do some damage limitation. He called Anand in Hyderabad over telephone and expressed his apologies,

apparently over questions raised in regard to his citizenship. “But in the case of Vishwanathan Anand there is no question (of questions over his citizenship). We are sorry for what has transpired. I told him even if some Indian were to acquire foreign nationality we are still proud of him”, the minister told a hurriedly-called press conference in Delhi.

Sir, we are absolutely sure he's missing. So now it's only PolicePolitician nexus right?
