Govt cuts Opposition to size PTI NEW DELHI, APRIL 27
Aided by a sudden turn around by BSP and friends-turned-foes SP and RJD, the government today cleared the first major trial of strength in Lok Sabha by a big margin by defeating the cut motions on petroleum prices exposing huge chinks in opposition armour. The much-hyped trial of strength proved to be a dampener when the cut motion moved by CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta on failure to formulate proper policies on petroleum products was defeated by a margin of 88 votes. The motion received the support of 201 votes with 289 voting against it in a House of 543. The government breezed through the Opposition challenge helped largely by BSP’s 21 MPs who voted with the treasury benches. 25 members of Samajwadi Party and RJD, which had during the day attacked the government on price rise and stalled both Houses of the Parliament, walked out of the House minutes before the vote on the cut motions. Another surprise voter for the government was Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren, who runs the state government on BJP’s support. Soren’s action triggered speculation that a new political equation may be in the
CET fine, but do well in Board: DoTE HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, APRIL 27
Some of the students appearing in the Goa Common Entrance Test to secure admissions to professional colleges give more attention to CET than concentrate on securing the minimum 50% marks in three subjects (say Physics, Chemistry and Maths for engineering) to make themselves eligible for admission. Officials observed it is fine to score high marks in the CET but the Directorate of Technical Education will not consider those who fail to score the minimum 50% marks in three subjects required for clearing the eligibility criteria to get admission to professional degree courses. A total of 3,424 students are appearing for CET at all centres on May 12 and 13 to vie for the 1,000 seats in professional colleges in the State. This time the number of students registered is 200 more than last year, said Deputy Director of Technical Education Pradeep Kusnoor. All the 3,424 students are appearing for Physics and Chemistry, while from this figure 2,719, 2,528 and 263 are answering Maths, Biology and Computer Science, respectively. Kusnoor said 135 students would appear for the G2CET at Fr Agnel Ashram in Verna and 197 in Panjim on May 14. G2CET is conducted for diploma and BSc degree holders for direct admissions to second year degree courses in engineering and pharmacy. He said this time DoTE had set up a facility at Ravindra Bhavan in Margao for the convenience of students appearing for CET from the Navelim, Verna and Curchorem examination centres. “The parents have applauded our efforts and we received 1,458 forms from there,” he said. This year, the DoTE received the maximum applications of 497 for the Mapusa examination centre and the minimum of 200 from the Curchorem examination centre. CET is held every year for entrance to professional colleges offering courses like medicine, engineering, dentistry, pharmacy and homeopathy.
offing in Jharkhand where he may dump his ally BJP. A senior BJP leader said the party has taken note of Soren supporting the government on the cut motion. The cut motion received the support of mainly BJP and its allies and Left Parties. Even their support of 222 was not fully recorded. Another cut motion of Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj was defeated 162-246 in a division. Earlier in the day, the way for smooth passage of the demands was paved by BSP supremo and UP Chief Minister Mayawati who announced the party’s support for the government to keep “communal forces” at bay from power in the centre. A similar reason was advanced by RJD and SP before walking out of the House, minutes ahead of the voting. The BJP saw in it a government strategy of “misusing” CBI as a political instrument keeping the Damocles sword on “vulnerable” opposition leaders. Mayawati, however, sought to de-link her party strategy from the CBI’s disproportionate assets case filed against her. Interestingly, the CBI had last week told the Supreme Court that it was ready to consider Mayawati’s plea for closure of the case.

cuted projects and managed the finances. In its analysis, GAG for the period 2004-05 had pointed out that the “tendering process suffered due to lack of transparency and that tender evaluation procedure was faulty.” Its findings also revealed that “there were cases of excess payments/wasteful expenditure and
over dependence on consultants on all the major works.” It may be recalled that the BJP-led government had appointed Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) – the special purpose vehicle — as the nodal agency for the development of the facilities required for hosting IFFI 2004.
It was headed by then chief minister Manohar Parrikar who was the chairman of the Board of Directors and Additional Secretary (Budget) was the managing director. Importantly, Parrikar was also the finance minister of Goa. FINANCES: GSIDC had estimated the total infrastructure project cost for IFFI 2004 at Rs
Drug nexus: Did the police lose track?
…Or have they lost interest? HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, APRIL 27
Even two months after the sensational case of the police-drug mafia nexus being officially handed over to the CID Crime Branch, the agency is yet to get the information on the properties of the six suspended policemen and the amount of drugs that has been missing from the police godowns. Two months ago the media had exposed the links between the police and the drug mafia with the help of the video uploaded on youtube.com wherein the Israeli drug dealer Atala admitted links with police inspector Ashish Shirodkar. Subsequently bowing to media pressure, the case was handed over to the Crime Branch. The six policemen were suspended and arrested five while one constable Sanjay Parab is still at large. Apart from this, the Crime Branch seems to have failed in gathering any major evidence
