Terming the Reliance power plant as a big scam, Aldona legislator Dayanand Narvekar on Monday said that the State has to buy power at much higher rates than the actual price. “The book value of the power purchased from Reliance is Rs 175 crore but the State government has paid a whopping Rs 1,300 crore,” Narvekar told the State legislative assembly. He said that the State while allowing the plant to enhance its power generation capacity from 50 mw to 100 mw should have re-floated the tender. “Reliance is a big scam. Don’t buy power at such a high rate from them. Put your foot down,” Narvekar said adding that the government should ask Reliance to reduce the tariff charged to the State. “If they don’t agree then stop purchasing power from them,” he added. He pointed out that the State was purchasing power at Rs 11 per unit while initially it was agreed that the power would be purchased at Rs 2.50 per unit. “Government of India is still selling the power at Rs 2.50 for our State. Then what is the point in purchasing power at a higher rate from Reliance,” Narvekar questioned. The former minister also demanded that the Zilla Panchayats in the State should also be given financial help, which will help them to implement various developmental projects at the village level. “Every ZP member should at least get Rs 25 lakh. Today when the State budget is Rs 6,000 crore, by spending Rs 50 crore for ZP you are not losing anything,” Narvekar said. Hotelier saves the noose for 8 Indians PTI DUBAI, MARCH 28

A Sharjah court has waived the death sentence awarded to eight Indian youths for the murder of a Pakistani national after a Dubai-based Indian hotelier paid blood money to the family of the victim on their behalf. The murder took place on July 11, 2009 following which 10 men, eight Indians — all from Punjab — and two Pakistanis, were arrested. The death penalty of two Pakistanis have also been waived off after the Dubai-based hotelier SP Singh Oberoi paid blood money. “Death penalty has been waived off for all the 10 accused, eight Indians and two Pakistanis. They have to serve three years of imprisonment of which they have already completed 21 months. So they will be free in another six months and will be deported directly to their home countries,” Oberoi told Press Trust of India following the verdict yesterday. Several such cases involving Punjabi youths embroiled in the bootlegging turf battle have come to light in recent times. The latest case involved murder of Pakistani national Mumtaz Yousuf, who hailed from Faislabad. The Indians who were arrested are: Kuldip Singh, Sachin Kumar Sharma, Rakesh Kumar, Sukhpal Singh, Hardev Singh, Charanjeet, Amarjeet Singh and Rashwinder Pal. An information technology entrepreneur of Goan origin has found out the hard way how information, one so innocently puts out on Facebook and other social networking sites, can turn into a nightmare. Pune-kar Dharmanath Fatarpekar has an account on Facebook, like most other youngsters. But little did he expect that he would be at the receiving end of threats from recovery agents of a private bank, especially because he hadn’t taken a loan from the bank! According to a report in ‘Pune Mirror’, Fatarpekar’s only fault was that his surname was the same as that of one of his distant relatives, Prakash, who was allegedly in default. Fatarpekar is

The sources said Singh would reach Chandigarh just in time for the match after attending an SPG Raising Day function at his residence in the morning. There is also a meeting of Council of Trade and Industry scheduled for the morning that day and it is not clear whether he would go ahead with the meeting or reschedule it. Sources said Gilani will not be coming to Delhi and is expected to reach Chandigarh on Wednesday morning. Refusing to give further details, the sources said the programme is being finalised. It will be “more of cricket and

less of diplomacy”, sources said when asked about the issues the two prime ministers will be discussing. Indulging in cricket diplomacy, Singh had invited Gilani to watch the World Cup semis between India and Pakistan which was accepted by the Pakistani prime minister. Home secy talks: Resuming the bilateral dialogue process after a gap of over two years, home secretaries of India and Pakistan today said “progress” has been made on certain issues and termed the talks as “extremely positive”. “Talks are extremely positive.
