Deputy Speaker Mauvin Godinho today said that Indian Navy was unjustifiably holding on to land of locals around the airport that actually does not belong to them (navy). “Indian Navy was supposed to hand over 2.5 acres of land to the Airport Authorities of India (AAI) for the expansion of Dabolim airport. But the naval authorities have not honoured their own commitment even though it was agreed upon by all the agencies,” Godinho said on the floor of the house on Wednesday.
Highlighting the Mormugao Outline Development Plan (ODP), the Cortalim legislator said that there is ample parking
space demarcated for public parking, but now suddenly Indian Navy is wrongly claiming the ownership of the land.
He urged that the State should prevail upon the navy to leave the land for parking. Godinho further stated that when the land was earmarked for ODP, many people challenged it in the High Court but after a thorough scrutiny, the court rejected the petition and found nothing wrong in the ODP plan. “I know a local whose land has been acquired at least four times for this project… The land should not be given to the navy,” Godinho claimed. The deputy speaker also said the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) was also into land grabbing
spree. Citing an example, he said that a private individual was told by MPT that a property near the Zuari River was theirs. He also said one person whose private land was acquired for constructing quarters for the AAI staff was promised alternate land. But in this case as well, the naval authorities did not honour their commitment while the person is running from pillar to post. The government will be replying to all demands on Thursday as the house was adjourned owing to the cricket World Cup semi-final between India and Pakistan.
