Karnataka CM for curbs on export of iron ore AGENCIES BANGALORE, JULY 4
Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asking for curbs on the export of iron ore from the country. He has requested the Prime Minister to convene a meeting of chief ministers of mineral-rich States to discuss the issue. In his letter to the Prime Minister, Yeddyurappa said over-exploitation of mines and illegal mining has been a major concern of all the mineral rich States of the country. Despite several efforts by the State Governments, the problems continue to persist. He said his government had implemented a Value Added Policy in the mining sector, under which mining leases are sanctioned only when the applicant demonstrates that there is value addition within Karnataka. The applicant has to either process the iron ore or has to tie up with a processing company in Karnataka. Instead of bulk permits, which were misused by mine owners, now specific permits are given for each load and trip. Bar coding and hologram-based trip sheets have been introduced to avoid fake permits, and integrated check-posts have been set up. (Related report on pg 5)

Also, warning has been issued to bus owners that their temporary licences will be cancelled if found participating in the bandh, said Dessai further adding that “this bandh is illegal as ESMA is in operation, which was introduced in April this year.” The ESMA remains in operation for six months and in this case its validity ends on September 30. The Association decided to go ahead with the decision of bandh tomorrow as they are not happy with 22.50 per cent hike decided by the government. They have been demanding 50 per cent hike, which was declined by the government. To ensure that organisers of bandh don’t play any mischief, all assistant directors of transport have been directed to be at the bus stands tomorrow and ensure bus services are not interrupted. Moreover, officers have been asked to take strict action against those playing mischief, said Desai. On the other hand, police have also geared up to tackle tomorrow’s bandh. All police stations have been given additional police force of 50, informed police sources. Also, police have sent letters to Shiv Sainiks warning them against inciting people to participate in the bandh.
