It’s Congress versus BJP in Valpoi Deepaji withdraws from fray HERALD CORRESPONDENT VALPOI, OCT 4

The stage is set for two candidates to contest the Valpoi byeelection on October 18, after independent candidate Deepaji Rane withdrew from the fray on Monday. With the withdrawal of Deepaji’s nomination, it is clear that there will be a straight fight between Vishwajeet Rane (Congress) and Santosh Haldankar (Bharatiya Janata Party). When contacted, Deepaji Rane said it was a BJP strategy to instruct him to file nomination as an independent candidate. “I had filed my nomination following the instructions from some senior party leaders and I withdrew from the race also upon the instruction from party leaders,” disclosed Deepaji. It may recalled that Deepaji Rane, former Pissurle sarpanch and State BJP executive member, had surprised everyone by filing his nomination as an independent candidate for Valpoi byepolls. Interestingly, he had also announced that he will continue to be a BJP worker and he would

clear his stand/strategy only on October 4, the day of withdrawal. Advani feels vindicated about temple campaign PTI NEW DELHI, OCT 4

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader L K Advani feels “vindicated” about his Ayodhya ‘Rath Yatra’ in the wake of the Allahabad High Court verdict and prefers a negotiated settlement for building a Ram temple at the place where the makeshift now stands. Advani, the mascot of the temple campaign who launched the Rath Yatra in 1989, also rejects criticism that last week’s judgement of the Lucknow court bench puts faith above law, saying it is only a case of “faith upheld by law”. He strongly endorses his party president Nitin Gadkari’s suggestion that Muslims can build a mosque “outside the complex” in Faizabad on the

statements and does not want to appear victorious after the judgement and would not say anything that would ruffle feathers in the Muslim community. “Yes, I do feel vindicated because I believe that until 1989 BJP was not part of this (temple) movement which actually started in 1949,” he said, to a question whether the judgement has vindicated his temple campaign launched in 1989 from Somnath to Ayodhya. Replying to questions on what is the way forward and whether the BJP and Sangh Parivar would take the initiative for a negotiated settlement, Advani said, “The way forward is an agreement between the two communities that this should happen. What should happen let them work it out.”
