Employees Provident Fund (EPF) Assistant Commissioner M K Farde was today caught redhanded by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) while accepting a bribe to settle a legal case against a Goan company. The alleged tainted officer was eventually arrested. CBI-Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) sleuths laid a trap after lunch hours following a complaint filed by the proprietor of Vidhya Industrial Services (VIS) Bharti Roy. The complainant alleged that Farde demanded Rs 1 lakh to water down a legal case against the manpower providing firm for not depositing its share of PF in accounts of its employees EPF. “The EPF officer assured the proprietor that he will not only dilute charges against the company but would grant certain benefits as well. Goa will now have a digital cyclone warning dissemination system (DCWDS), which will be operated by policemen at the police control room in Panjim. After a break of three years, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has decided to replace its old cyclone warning dissemination system (CWDS) which was based on analog. Talking to Herald, IMD Goa in-charge K V Singh said that

the CWDS, which was installed in the State nearly 10 years back, failed to function after it begin to clash with the frequency of police wireless system. “The IMD-Mumbai has now thought to replace it with a digital system, which will be installed soon,” Singh said. Parties spar over Ayodhya verdict PTI NEW DELHI, OCT 5

Gloves were off on the Ayodhya verdict with Congress and Left parties saying the Allahabad High Court verdict was in no way a justification of the “criminal act” of Babri Masjid demolition and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) hitting back saying there was no need for “edification”. Keeping aside the restraint of the last few days, parties indulged in a joust on the court verdict, which the Left parties felt placed faith above law. Non-BJP parties accused “communal forces” of trying to exploit the verdict which they said would be detrimental to larger national interest and harm the desire for peace and harmony. Meanwhile, efforts for an outof-court settlement of the issue received a setback with the Sunni Central Wakf Board, a lit-

Airline coach hits plane wing at Dabolim HERALD REPORTER VASCO, OCT 5

In a shocking incident, a passenger coach of Indigo Airlines rammed against a stationary Jet Airways plane at Dabolim airport on Tuesday afternoon. The mishap as well as the recent bird strikes have severely dented the safety record of the Dabolim airport, especially with the charter tourism season due to start on Wednesday. The incident took place shortly after the Bangalore-Goa Jet Airways flight 9W24 arrived from Bangalore at about 1.58 pm. “After passengers alighted from the flight, it was stationed at the apron for passengers to board the flight for Bangalore when an empty coach of Indigo Airlines rammed against the left wing of the aircraft,” Airport Director D Paul Manickam said. “Luckily, no casualties were

Musharraf admits Pak trained ultras PTI WASHINGTON, OCT 5

Former military ruler Pervez Musharraf has admitted that Pakistan had trained underground militant groups to fight in Kashmir, the first such admission by a top leader of the country. Musharraf ’s candid remarks came days after he announced his return to active politics from London where he has been living in self-imposed exile. “They (underground militant groups to fight against India in Kashmir) were indeed formed,” Musharraf told German magazine Der Spiegel in an interview. Asked why did Pakistan train militant underground groups to fight India in Kashmir, the former president said Nawaz Sharif ’s apathy to the Kashmir issue was one of the reasons, so was the fact that the world had turned a blind eye to the dispute. “Yes, it is the right of any country to promote its own interests... when India is not prepared to discuss Kashmir at the United Nations and is not prepared to resolve the dispute in a peaceful manner,” Musharraf claimed. “The (Nawaz Sharif) government turned a blind eye because they wanted India to discuss Kashmir,” he said. Musharraf indicated he had no regrets for the Kargil intrusion, that led to an armed conflict in 1999, and argued that each country had a right to promote its national interest. Musharraf slammed the international community, particularly the West, for persistently ignoring the Kashmir issue, and for singling out Pak for all blames. Musharraf charged the international community of courting India for strategic deals, while treating Pakistan as a rogue state.

igant in the case deciding to challenge the Lucknow Bench’s verdict in the Supreme Court. “It is important to underline that the verdict in no way condones the demolition of the Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992 which was a shameful and criminal act for which the perpetrators must be brought to justice,” said the Congress after a meeting of the party’s Working Committee here. In a balancing act, the party said it respected the judicial process with regard to the Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title suit and that the final decision of the Supreme Court has to be awaited whenever the appeal is filed. In the meantime, a statement issued by the party citing the “consensus” in the meeting said, the party would welcome efforts by the parties concerned with the litigation to find an amicable (Continued on page 10)

However, the incident did not disrupt other flights at Dabolim airport as the Jet Airways plane was stationed on the apron. “After inspection by local aviation engineers, the coach was (Continued on page 10)
