Nepalese lawmakers today failed in their sixth bid to elect a new prime minister, with Maoist chief Prachanda and his Nepali Congress rival R C Poudyal unable to secure a majority vote, deepening the two-month political crisis in the country. More than two months after the 22-party coalition led by Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal collapsed, 55year-old Prachanda polled 240 votes, while 101 lawmakers voted against him. Similarly, the 601-member parliament also rejected Poudyal who secured 122 votes in favour and 242 opposing him. Out of total 504 members present today, 163 lawmakers stayed neutral. Lawmakers from third largest CPN-UML party, Terai based Madhesi parties and most of the other smaller groups remained neutral during the parliament vote. The date for next round of election has been fixed for September 7.

The trial of the “advanced maneuverable” version of BrahMos Block-II was conducted for achieving the maximum range of 290 km of the supersonic missile, he said. Defence Minister A K Antony congratulated the army and defence scientists associated with the project following the successful launch. It is essential that even if the candidate gets defeated, he should continue to serve the people of his constituency,” added Jadhav. NCP’s clarion call: bury differences, be united Maharashtra Minister for Urban Development Bhaskar Jadhav said if the organisation is strong, then nothing can prevent the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) from coming to power in Goa. He was speaking as the chief guest after inaugurating the Bardez taluka convention of Nationalist Congress Party at Sirsat Hall, Mapusa, on Sunday evening, which was attended by over 1,000 people. “What is required is that the leaders should forget their internal differences, get united and strengthen the party’s base at the grassroots level. To achieve this objective, it is necessary that such conventions of the party should be organised in each and every constituency of Goa,” said Jadhav. Jadhav further said nothing is impossible for the party if it gets strong support from the people. “The constituencies of Goa are very small as compared to Maharashtra and hence it is possible to establish relationship with each and every family in each constituency if the party

Maoists today claimed to have released the three Bihar policemen taken hostage a week back but the State government said it had no information as the agonizing wait for their families continued. Hopes of an end to the hostage crisis were dashed when there was no trace of the abducted policemen several hours after the Maoists claimed they had released them. “The search has been intensified as we have to ensure safe release of the hostages,:Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) P K Thakur told Press Trust of India. “We do not not depend on the media reports that showed Maoists claiming to have released the cops,” he said. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also said that he had no knowledge about the release of the hostages. His comments followed an unsubstantied claim by Maoists to some local media offices that they had released the three cops. Local TV channels in Jamui quoting Maoist sources said that the policemen had been released in Belhar forest on the border of Banka and Jamui. According to footage beamed on a local channel, a self- proclaimed Maoist leader identifying himself as ‘Kishanji’ met family members of one of the hostages, Abhay Prasad Yadav in the wee hours today and assured them that he would be home soon.
