It’s diyas, rangolis and fireworks PTI NEW DELHI, NOV 5

Fireworks lit the sky and houses wore a festive look decorated with earthen lamps and multicolour ‘rangolis’ across India on Diwali which also witnessed bonhomie along the Indo-Pak border where soldiers of the two countries exchanged sweets and dry fruits. It was fun and frolic all around in the festival of lights as children and youth burst crackers and lit fireworks while families visited their neighbours, exchanged ‘Happy Diwali’ greetings and sweets. Youngsters also took the route of SMS and social networking websites to wish each other. Diwali or Deepavali (row of lamps), according to Hindu belief, is celebrated to mark the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya from his exile after vanquishing

demon-king Ravana. The festivities reached a peak in the national capital and other parts of northern India where people decorated their homes and shops with colourful ‘rangolis’, flowers and lightings and lit ‘diyas’ or earthen lamps.

DIWALI BONHOMIE Indian and Pakistani troops deployed along the Line of Control exchanged sweets and dry fruits at Chakan-Da-Bagh crossing point in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir. Indian soldiers led by Colonel V P Kristopal handed over boxes of sweets and dry fruits to their Pakistani counterparts as a goodwill gesture while from the other side, troops led by Colonel Omar Gul gifted the goodies to Indians. In nearby Amritsar, thousands of people paid obeisance in the sanctum sanctorum of Harmandhar Sahib (Golden Temple), the holiest Sikh shrine. The temple was illuminated with fancy electric lights and community feast (langar) was arranged for three lakh devotees. On the same day in 1620, sixth Sikh Guru Hargobind Sahib was released by Mughal emperor Jahangir from Gwalior fort. In Mumbai, people ushered in the festivities with a “abhyang snan” (traditional bath) with fragrant oils in the morning and burst crackers in the evening. Security was tight across the country while it was stricter in Delhi and Mumbai. The western metropolis will have a high-profile (Continued on page 2)

US President Barack Obama left for Mumbai on Friday, saying he would seek to pry open the Indian market for American businesses during his maiden visit to the country that is expected to give a fresh impetus to bilateral strategic and economic partnership. In a statement before leaving for his four-nation Asia tour starting with India, Obama said he would be talking about opening up of additional markets in countries like India as American jobs depended greatly on American exports.

Row over invites

The visit of US President Barack Obama to the country’s financial capital has been clouded in a row over invitees to his functions in Mumbai being asked by US consulate to submit personal details like PAN numbers drawing angry reactions from senior Maharashtra ministers and officials. US Consul General Paul Folmsbee said he had visited Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal personally to apologise and blamed the unusual request on a “clerical error”. There is no word yet whether the two leaders will attend after the apology was tendered. He said his administration had set a goal of doubling US exports over the next five years

to create more jobs back home. “It is absolutely clear that the key to creating new jobs is opening markets for American goods made by American workers. “And that is why on the trip I am undertaking, I will be talking about opening up additional markets in places like India,” said Obama, close on the heels of Democrats’ recent drubbing in US mid-term elections, largely attributed to the discontent over his government’s handling of unemployment and economy. Pointing out that American businesses need to sell more products abroad for creating more jobs at home, Obama said he said: “I am looking very much forward to helping to pry open markets for American businesses”. He said focusing on the future, rather than on the “next election” was key to the success of the American future.

“This is a reminder (of the fact) that the most important competition we face in this century will not be between Democrats and Republicans, it is a competition with countries around the world to lead the (Continued on page 2)
