To prove majority on October 11 PTI BANGALORE, OCT 6
The Bharatiya Janata Party government in Karnataka today plunged into crisis being reduced to a minority after 19 legislators withdrew support, prompting Governor H R Bhardwaj to ask Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa to prove his majority in the Assembly before October 12. The first-ever saffron government in the south was rocked by the action of 19 MLAs—14 from BJP and five Independents—who revolted against Yeddyurappa’s leadership disatisfied with the recent cabinet expansion and gave a letter to the Governor withdrawing support to him. The rebel ML As included seven ministers of whom four were independents who were sacked earlier in the day. Hours after the revolt, Yeddurappa had a meeting with Bharadwaj and told him he was ready to face the trial of strength on October 11, one day ahead of the deadline set by the gov-

ernor for the 29-month-old government. “I have requested the Governor to convene the special session on October 11 to face the trial of strength”, he told the media after meeting Bhardwaj at Raj Bhavan. Yeddyurappa expressed confidence of proving the majority enjoyed by his government. In the 224-member assembly, BJP and independents together had a strength of 123 and with today’s developments it has been reduced to 104 reducing
the ruling party to a minority. BJP requires the support of 113 members to prove its majority. BJP earlier had 117 MLAs including the Speaker, followed by Congress 73, JDS 28 and independents six. Acting quickly to save his government, Yeddyurappa dangled the carrot of ministry reshuffle with immediate effect to appease the rebels and assured another exercise next year to induct new faces. In a firefighting exercise, he also rushed mining magnate and Tourism Minister G Janardhana Reddy to pacify the agitated MLAs, who are camping near Chennai. Interestingly, Reddy had led the dissident campaign against Yeddyurappa not long ago. Emerging from the about two-and-half hours discussions with the rebel MLAs at the airport here, Reddy told reporters there was no threat to the government and he would convey the dissidents’ demands to the party high command. The rebels later left for Kochi.

Rahul likens RSS to SIMI PTI BHOPAL/NEW DELHI, OCT 6
In unusually strident remarks, Rahul Gandhi today equated Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) with banned terror outfit SIMI, saying both preached “hardline fundamentalist Ideologies”, evoking sharp reactions from the RSS and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). “Both these organisations have hardline fundamentalist ideologies,” he said at a press conference here. When pointed out that the radical Students Islamic Move-
ment of India (SIMI) was a proscribed outfit, which was not the case with RSS, the Nagpurheadquartered right-wing group, Rahul said that this did not matter much for him. “...both these organisations preach fundamentalist ideologies. That’s a fact and nothing is going to change that fact,” he said. Gandhi, who is on a tour of BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh, went on to drive home his point saying there can be no place in the Youth Congress for people with hardline fundamentalist ideolo-
Stress taking a toll on Goan policemen Vibha Verma PANJIM, OCT 6
Psychosomatic and anxiety neurosis cases are reportedly on the rise in the Goa Police with at least three such cases being referred to a police medical clinic in a fortnight, a senior medical officer said. Many policemen are bogged down with stress, which couples up with their unbearable workload. The worry of not being able to pay back the loan is a major concern about policemen, who feel helpless and give up. Police medical officer (PMO) Dr Kalpana Mahatme, who interacts with police officials on a regular basis said that there are many who have borrowed loans because they need to buy
a house or have to get their siblings married . “The expectations from the family members are high and reportedly never ending. This puts them in great stress and finally their health caves in,” said the officer who has 5,000odd police force as her patients. She said that some have procured loans from more than one place, which leaves them with a paltry salary at the end of the month. “Some policemen have married at a young age and now have the responsibility of looking after a growing child,” Dr Mahatme said. The stress level also increases as some policemen are sole bread earners and their depend-
ents are more. “There is stress but we have no single case of depression and that’s a good sign,” she said. A close look at the cases reveals that those who are in their 30s or those nearing superannuation suffer from such stressrelated disorders. Dr Mahatme said that Goa Police is amongst few forces in the country that is getting such prime medical treatment. “They don’t even have to leave their office premises. Right from medicine to psychological counselling, everything is available on call,” she said. The PMO also tours police stations to get the update on health conditions of personnel (Continued on page 10)
gies. Incensed over being equated with SIMI, RSS hit out at Rahul saying he needs to learn more about the country before making such “meaningless” statements. “He should brush up his knowledge before making meaningless statements. He should know the difference between RSS and banned outfits and know the history of Congress party, which has been accused of fundamentalism in the l a s t s i x d e c a d e s , ” R SS spokesperson Ram Madhav said.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) – Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) sleuths have recovered more than Rs 1 lakh in cash from the residence of the alleged tainted Employees Provident Fund assistant officer M K Farde. Farde on Tuesday was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000 from a manpower management firm to dilute legal charges against them. He was thereafter taken to CBI office at Bambolim from EPF office at Patto where he was arrested. The raid was conducted after Vidhya Industries Services (VIS) proprietor Bharti Roy filed a written complaint with the CBI that Farde was demanding a bribe of Rs 1 lakh to settle cases against the company. “In the midst of the interrogation, we raided his official flat next to the EPF office and attached two unnamed envelopes containing cash of Rs 6,000 and Rs 4,000 respectively.
