US rules out new inquiries in Bhopal case PTI WASHINGTON, JUNE 8

The United States today ruled out reopening any ‘new inquiries’ against Union Carbide following the Indian court verdict on Bhopal gas disaster and hoped this case would not affect the passage of the civil nuclear liability bill in India. The Obama Administration also hoped that yesterday’s verdict by a Bhopal court will bring “closure” to the families of the gas leak victims and that this case will not “inhibit” US expanding ties with India. The administration refused to discuss the issue of extradition of Warren Anderson, a former chairman of Carbide’s parent company to India. Carbide is a US multi-national firm. The nuclear bill, which is facing opposition in India, is currently before parliament. The controversial bill has been referred to a standing committee of parliament. The American reactions by two senior officials came amid outrage by civil rights activists over the US parent company escaping criminal liability and Anderson being allowed to go scot free in connection with the 1984 gas disaster in which over 15,000 people died.

Govt draws flak on Muslim burial ground Minorities panel issues ultimatum HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, JUNE 8

Pulling up the State government for failing in its statutory duty and constitutional obligation to allot suitable land for a Muslim kabrastan in Margao, the National Commission for Minorities has directed the Goa government to complete the process of acquisition of suitable land for a burial ground within a maximum period of six months in any or all circumstances. After hearing the petitioner Abdulmatin Daud Carol, general secretary, Madrasa Raza-aMustafa, Masjid Goasiya Ahle Sunnatul Jamat, Goa, and the State government, the commission has concluded that it is not only a clear case of communal

discrimination against the Muslim minority community, but also a categorical case of harassment and illegal deprivation on one pretext or the other by the State government. “The State government has failed completely to carry out its statutory duty and constitutional obligations for allotment of suitable land for the Muslim kabrastan even after passing of a resolution in the legislative assembly way back in 1999”, the commission asserted. The commission said it is the primary duty of any State government not only to protect the constitutional rights of minorities in the State, but also to safeguard their interests and rights (Continued on page 10)

Pacheco files for anticipatory bail Terms allegations as vague HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, JUNE 8

After eluding the Crime Branch for the last four days, former Tourism Minister, Mickk y Pacheco on Tuesday knocked the doors of the South Goa Sessions Court for anticipatory bail in the Nadia Torrado death case. In his petition filed in the court on Tuesday noon, Pacheco said his name has been dragged into the case to sensationalise the whole incident, created by his rivals to malign and tarnish his reputation. He charged officials of the investigating agency for acting at the behest of some of the people, who are hell bent upon tarnishing and destroying his image. Saying that the first information report (FIR) does not name him as an accused or a suspect in Nadia’s death, Pacheco said there is no evidence to nail him in the case and blamed the investigating agency for manufacturing the present case. Submitting that the ongoing investigations are aimed at harassing and torturing him, he claimed that the allegations made in the FIR are highly improbable and the same cannot be relied upon prima facie. The former tourism minister said there is no likelihood of he jumping the bail as he has always been cooperating with the investigating agency and is a legislator of his constituency. Incidentally, the former tourism minister referred to the

He pointed out that he had joined the interrogations by mistake and had answered all questions after being grilled for nine hours. Pacheco, however, said that he is now apprehending his arrest on motivated considerations and termed all allegations in the case as vague. He said that he is neither likely to influence any witnesses nor is he likely to tamper with witnesses. “The entire evidence is in the possession of the investigating agency. Moreover,

Tired of continuous police questioning and “harassment” for almost a week, Nadia’s family members have moved the High Court petitioning that the case be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for an impartial probe. In a petition filed here, Nadia’s mother Sonia, younger brother Konrad and husband Winston Barreto have stated that the police are not conducting a fair probe and unnecessarily harassing them. The case is scheduled to come up for hearing on June 10. 28-year-old Nadia, a close friend of former tourism minister Mickky Pacheco, died after she consumed rat poison. The minister has been named the prime suspect in the case by the police.

I never demanded any post: Nilkanth HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, JUNE 8

Although he was elated after being sworn in as a minister in the Digamabar Kamat cabinet, Thivim MLA Nilkanth Halarnkar said he never demanded with the party high command for the post. “I was the founder member of the NCP in Goa along with Dr Pegado etc, but I never demanded any post or ministry for that matter,” Nilkanth told reporters after his swearing in ceremony at Raj Bhavan today. Asked whether he has any particular portfolio in mind, Nilkanth replied “no, it is prerogative of the chief minister.” “Let the chief minister and the high command decide on that I have full faith in them,” Nilkanth said. When pointed out to the circumstances under which he was sworn in as minister after Mickky Pacheco resigned, the Thivim MLA who served as a panch member of Colvale panchayat for 20 years said, “I don’t want to comment on that.” “Mickky may have resigned due to personal reasons and to tell you frankly we three MLAs in the NCP never had any differences,” he stated adding “I am ready to vacate the post anytime the high command desires so”.

tor S B Faria told newsmen that the NIA would take the accused into custody in the court of the day for further investigations into the bomb blast case. NIA Superintendent of police Vijayan told Herald that the investigating agency will take the accused into police custody based on the revelations made during interrogations. Meanwhile, Adv Sanjiv

Punalekar, who appeared for accused Prashant Ashtekar in the bomb blast case, has slammed the Goa police, terming the Goa police as completely criminalized and involved in political games. Punalekar further said that the accused, including deceased Malgonda Patil, are all Sanatan Sadaks, but denied their involvement in the bomb blast case.

Adv Punalekar, who has been representing Sanatan activists in the bomb blasts in Maharashtra, said that Prashant Ashtekar had appeared before the South Goa Sessions court on May 27 and had filed application for bail. He, however, said that the Ashtekar did not surrender before the police as the Sanatan activists had a bad experience with the Goa police . “The police arrest and keep in illegal custody. We wanted him to come before the court and surrender. I am not praising the NIA, but compared to the Goa police, atleast they are following the rules and procedure”, he added. Charging Goa police for breaching all rules and procedures in the Margao bomb blast case, he said that the men-inuniform took a search of the Sanatan Ashram and entered the premise even without removing their shooes. “We know which place the Goa police are not only removing their boots, but pants as well”, he added.

The recent discovery of rare statues near the Chamundeshwari Devasthan at Pilgao-Bicholim has prompted the temple committee to decide on constructing a museum to showcase the treasures. Addressing a press conference at Vargao-Pilgao in Bicholim on Tuesday, Devasthan President Tushar Tople said they have decided to setup a museum for the rare statues and idols found in the tank near the temple. ”Besides this we would also

Nagri script on its back and is dated to 1583 AD.” “We have decided to set up a museum to store these rare sculptures which have great historical importance. The sculptures are that of goddess Rawalnath, Kalbhairaw, Indra, Kshetrapal and one more which is difficult to recognize,” Tople told reporters. The State government has decided to acquire Mapusa Communidade’s land, admeasuring 8,538 sq mtrs, near Mapusa police station for the construction of a Mini Kala Bhavan. After the government published notification under Section 4 of Land Acquisition Act 1894 in the Official Gazette and local newspapers in June 2009 stating the land was required for the purpose of Mini Kale Haven, some farmers raised objection to the land acquisition. The Mapusa Communidade had informed the Deputy Collector that they sold around 2,300 sq mtrs of land to a private party. The Deputy Collector on hearing the farmers and Mapusa Communidade submitted a detailed report to the government. However on the basis of the report, the government issued notification under Section 6 of the Act on June 4, 2010, and di-

rected the Deputy Collector to go ahead with the process of land acquisition. Meanwhile, Kala Bavan Nirmiti Samiti, Mapusa, President Narayan Karekar has thanked the government for taking the decision to acquire the land for construction of Mini Kala Bhavan at Mapusa. “Some politicians were interested in building commercial complex in the land and shift the Ravindra Bhavan near St Xavier College stating that Kala Bhavan at the site would create traffic congestion in the town and power problem,” stated Karekar. “The government has taken the right decision and has fulfilled the wishes of the people. The site is best suited for Kala Bhavan, as it is close to the bus stand and police station,” said Karekar.

When Narayan Pagi was miraculously pulled out alive from the landslide, it was his second brush with death within barely eight months. Sources informed that Pagi, who works on a fishing trawler, is learnt to have escaped death during the last October’s sea rampage, when several fishing trawlers and boats sank or displaced and went missing in the Arabian Sea. Pagi’s fishing trawler was reportedly found after four days

of sea ordeal somewhere in the high seas off Ratnagiri coast. On the other hand, it was a double blow for the family of Sukdo Velip as his wife had drowned in the sea, where she had gone to collect shellfish a few years ago. Sukdo had come that fateful day to help the labourers to fix a wooden piece (Chowk) at the bottom of the well at Agonda, before actually masonry work to build well walls are taken up. A collapsed portion of the roof at the newly constructed Corlim panchayat. HERALD CORRESPONDENT OLD GOA, JUNE 8

The 12-year-old Corlim panchayat building is falling apart and panchas have decided to shift into the old panchayat hall and to appoint a technical consultant in a bid to renovate the Corlim panchayat building. The panchas at the recent fortnightly panchayat meeting have passed a resolution to appoint engineer Paresh Gaitonde as technical consultant and take his advice on structural safety and renovation of the panchayat building situated in Corlim. It may be recalled that on May 3, 2010, a portion of concrete slab in Talathi’s room collapsed. Luckily, no one was injured in the incident, as no one was present in the room at the time of incident. It may be recalled that the panchayat building, which was constructed under Rural and De-

velopment Agency scheme, was inaugurated on October 2, 1998, but due to poor and haphazard construction and water proofing works, there was water leakage, due to which the steel got corroded. The resolution to this effect was proposed by former sarpanch and Panch Joao B Lobo and seconded by Sarpanch Sisto Fernandes, who informed that the entire panchayat building has become dangerous due to weakening of RCC roof slab. Speaking to Herald, Corlim Panchayat Secretary Basilio Pires said: “The panchas and employees working in the panchayat building have expressed fears of the roof slab.” “There is an urgent need for repairs of the entire panchayat building. The panchas have also decided to ask Gaitonde to give his recommendation regarding the renovation work to be undertaken for recasting the entire slab and taking up columns from outside supporting the slab. “During the renovation work, the panchayat office could be shifted to the nearby panchayat hall,” he added.

Lyndon’s anticipatory bail opposed

Mickky, Lyndon may be instrumental in destroying evidence: CB HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, JUNE 8

Vehemently opposing the bail application moved by Mickky Pacheco’s OSD Lyndon Monteiro in the Nadia Torrado death case, the Crime Branch has said that it allegedly appears that both Mickky Pacheco and Lyndon Monteiro may have a very important role in the destruction of evidence in the case. Submitted to the Sessions court Lyndon is an alleged suspect in the destruction of evidence relating to the death of the Loutolim woman.

In fact, the Crime Branch further said there is every possibility that Lyndon may further indulge in destruction of whatever evidence police is trying hard to retrieve and ensure justice for the departed soul. Hearing of arguments on Lyndon’s bail plea took place in the court of Additional sessions Judge B P Deshpande on Tuesday noon, wherein the Crime Branch prayed to the court to dismiss the bail application. The Crime Branch maintained that there has been a systematic and sustained destruction of ev-

idence and it appears that the former tourism Minister and Lyndon Monteiro may have a very important role in the destruction of evidence. The investigating agency said that Lyndon is also required to know the whereabouts of Micky Pacheco, to know the profile of relationship of Pacheco with deceased Nadia and to check for the passport, cell phones of deceased Nadia. The Crime Branch submitted that both Pacheco and Lyndon are prominent and powerful persons, who wield tremendous

clout in the state. “They can easily influence not only a layman, but also the administration. In public perception, Lyndon is not only an ordinary personal assistance or OSD, but is like alter ego of the former minister and is perceived as powerful as his boss. The relationship is not merely professional, but extends to personal intimacy as evident from the continuous interactions with Mickk y on the phone”, the Crime Branch said, while opposing the bail application. Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Convenor GBA Sabina Martins said they tried contacting the Flying Squad yesterday from Porvorim on 1077 after working hours, but nobody responded. Martins said this was not the assurance given by the Government. The impression given to us was that the Flying Squad will operate for 24 hours on all week days, but the gazette notification doesn’t talk about the full day functionality, she stated and added, “We demand that the squads be made operational for 24 hours.” She said, secondly, the Flying Squad in some cases have managed to reach at the place of violations and slapped stop work orders. “But in spite of that works have commenced again, making the squad headed by the deputy collector look powerless,” she asserted. Martins said the squad has no power to file FIRs against offenders and the same ironically was with the Town and Country Planning Department. Joint Secretary GBA Miguel Braganza maintained the TCP should delegate its powers to the deputy collector if at all there was a will to make the Flying Squad more meaningful. projects lined up. It may be because there is a strong provision in the RP 2021 to save eco-sensitive zones which is not there in RP 2001 presently in force, he mentioned. Martins said assurances of March 4, 2010 by the CM to

freeze constructions in eco-sensitive zones have all but vanished. The Government has instead notified a committee for review of construction in eco zones with no mention of freezing the same. “Rampant illegal mining, hill

It was with this vision of contributing to nation development through ‘Teacher training’ that KLE Society’s English medium Teacher Training Institute was born under the stewardship of Dr. Prabhakar Kore(MLC),Chairman of KLE Society. In the course of a few years the Institute has made tremendous progress under the able leadership of Ms Rajashree Desai, Principal of the Institute. In the past few years the pass percentage has been 100% and all the past students have been well placed in different Schools throughout India. Many trained teachers from this Institute have also been selected and appointed as Govt. school Teachers. When many other sectors today are facing recession, ‘School teaching’ is experiencing a boom. It ensures job satisfaction and also a promising future. So if you are innovative, have excellent rapport with youngsters, then a career in Teaching is for you.

R N Shetty Polytechnic

Shri Siddarameshwar Education Society has valuable contribution in the education sector of Belgaum and North Karnataka. The society is running more than 50 educational institutions comprising of polytechnic, engineering college, teachers training institute, anganwadi etc. R N Shetty Polytechnic that was started in 1986 is one of the prime and well known institutions managed by the society. Initially this polytechnic that was offering only two courses now offers six different courses in different technical and engineering streams and has earned special reputation as one of the best polytechnics in the region. The students who have passed out from this college are now working not only in India but have secured reputed jobs overseas. Highly qualified, experienced and expert staff, building which is well equipped with lab, workshops and other amenities assist the students in pursuing their technical education in a better way. The polytechnic has a well equipped ‘do it your self ’ workshop to enhance the skills of the students. During the current year the Computer section students who participated at a state level workshop that was held at C B Kore Polytechnic, Chikkodi secured first prize for their project ‘Medical Records, Globalization and Sharing. The students have also successfully completed projects like 1) Students Performance enquiry System 2) Micro Controller based & device control using optical fibre 3) Power Line monitoring and controlling system 4) automated wheel chair.

large number of students who have pursued their higher education from Belgaum have excelled at national and international level bringing laurels to Belgaum, making it the most sought after educational hub in the region. Since last decade opportuni-

ties in the field of higher education in Belgaum have multiplied. Thanks to the silent revolution in the field of education which is now at it’s prime. All the societies with their educational institutions are spreading wings and are being

reckoned at international level. With a special affection to Goa, these institutions, like in past, welcome students from Goa in an effort of strengthening the bond of friendship which Belgaum and Goa share since time immemorial.

Institute of Management Education and Research (IMER), Belgaum Karnatak Law Society (KLS), founded Institute of Management Education and Research (I.M.E.R), Belgaum in 1991, and the Institute conducts a twoyear full-time Master of Business Administration (MBA) Pro gramme affiliated to Karnataka University Dharwad, and is approved by AICTE New-Delhi. The Institute is rated as A+ by business school survey conducted by Business India and Dalal Street Finance Journal, 2009 for the second year consecutively. It has received Global award for perfection, Quality and Ideal Performance IMER has a team of highly dedicated and knowledge-rich faculty who are fully engaged in developing multiple skills in students. Our faculty believes in PRAGATI and continuous update of their knowledge. They have been attending Seminars, Workshops and Faculty Development Programmes. The faculty of IMER is in consultancy to Government and private Organizations in India and abroad. The faculties are also involved in Research by producing over 100 research papers, 5 books, and received grants for various Projects from AICTE. The Institute encourages students in varied activities and grooms them to fit for the modern competitive requirement. Over the past 5-6 years, the Institute has achieved good placements with the support of organizations like, India Cements Ltd., ICICI Bank, Adroit Software & Consulting Inc., USA, ICICI Lombard, ICICI Prudential, Whirlpool India, PEPSI, Kotak Securities Ltd., Glaxo, Tata Teleservies Ltd, Cambell Knitwear Ltd., Reliance Money, Citi Financial, Deutch Bank, Infosys BPO etc. The Entrepreneurship Development Cell, Foreign Language, Centre for Financial Excellence, Centre for Human Resource Management and add-on- courses are new feath-

ers to IMER. With the above all, IMER today has positioned itself among the top 75 B-Schools in India. It enjoys a unique place among B-Schools in Karnataka. The Institute publishes a bi-annual research journal “TATVA”. Three important Aspects for the Indian B-Schools in the present scenario are: Admissions, Placements and B-School Ranking. These three aspects are cir-

cular. The Institute whose ranking is better gets admissions and also the placements. The one, which gets better placements, gets better rank. The one, which gets better admissions, gets better placements. We welcome you to our institute to see how we have improved in intake, infrastructure, faculty, curriculum, industry-institute interface, placements and alumni support.

or the Digamber Kamat-led Goa coalition government, its biggest achievement in three years in power is sheer survival. A coalition government that last three years in Goa must be considered a super-stable one. Considering the fact that it was very nearly toppled twice in mega-revolts within months of being sworn in, this is indeed an achievement! In fact, it is probably the only achievement of any consequence… Little wonder that Mr Kamat freely admits that a ‘divine hand’ has been guiding him in the governance and helping him overcome obstacles. He says this not in off-the-record asides, but in a booklet that the state government has released on the occasion of its completion of three years in office. ‘Golden Glow’ is its name, and former Tourism Minister Francisco alias Mickky Pacheco – presently on the run from the police in the Nadia Torrado suicide case – does not feature in the photographs of the cabinet ministers. In the case of Mr Kamat personally, there is one more achievement – accessibility. Despite all the negative reports appearing recently about his treatment of a delegation of NGOs, the present CM has been, and continues to be, the most accessible chief minister this state has seen since Dayanand Bandodkar. In fact, it is probably this, and his general humility and politeness in dealing with people, which are the secrets of his longevity in power. For, in terms of performance, there is little to show, except for a long string of broken promises and pending decisions. In fact, Mr Kamat more or less admitted this when he said that “much more” could have been accomplished. He has blamed all the ‘unaccomplished’ events on there “not being a totally favourable ambience”, whatever that may mean. “I feel I could have done better, which I am trying to do in future,” he told journalists at the release function. Unemployment, underemployment, rising migration, slums and related social issues, solid waste management and disposal, lack of sewage and sanitation facilities, inability to direct sustainable development with environmental protection, and inadequate availability of financial resources are the challenges he says his government has identified. Let us add to that the biggest problem of them all; unbridled corruption at the highest levels. But strangely, even though people are deeply frustrated with the government, their anger is directed more at the other ministers. Mr Kamat himself has managed to retain a much better approval rating than his cabinet colleagues. He has been helped, no doubt, by an Opposition that is mostly dormant. But a pleasant personality and good public relations can only take one so far. The government needs to pull up its socks and show the ‘aam admi’ that it means business. This includes disciplining wayward cabinet colleagues. The resignation of Mickky Pacheco is a good move, but he is by no means the only minister in the cabinet that deserves to go.

Hysterical media SND Poojary, Miramar On June 6, the chief judicial magistrate, Bhopal, delivered his judgement on the Bhopal gas tragedy case and convicted eight officials of the erstwhile Union Carbide India Ltd for negligence; and sentenced them for a two-year prison term. The private Indian electronic media, as usual, went hysterical. Throughout the day, there were panel discussions, interviews with the victims’ relatives and the NGOs. One channel had the audacity to speak to the judge who delivered the judgement. However, no channel thought it fit to educate the listeners the background of the case. It is not that the CJM, by his discretion awarded lesser punishment. He was guided by the judgement of the Supreme Court of India. It was the Supreme Court that refused permission

ust before going to bed last night, I read this one-liner on Facebook. It said: “The person who called Goa the ‘rape capital’ is about to become the mayor of that capital if proved guilty.” It would have been funny, if the joke had not been on all of us. Once again, in the past fortnight, Goa made news for all the wrong reasons; thanks to Mickky Pacheco’s antics (from his alleged sexual liaisons to his going ‘missing’). It made a great news story, and you can trust it to be milked dry by the media as long as it lasts; and then get equally quickly forgotten. It also allowed for the accumulation of huge political capital. To more than one politician and to more than one party, it was a godsend. It was just what Goa needed in a slow season, after all efforts came to nought to unseat the under-performing and unable-to-deliver Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, better known as Digubab. Even if Digubab has the blessings of Delhi, his honeymoon with public opinion is no longer what it once was. But he has staved off efforts from the Opposition, which not too long ago had a long-enough stint in power to discredit itself quite effectively – never mind what their spin doctors say – and even his own coalition ‘supporters’ in the socalled G7; or should we say Gang of Seven. The Facebook comment above drove home the point. But in today’s Goa, there is no need for someone to be “proven guilty”. It’s enough to rake up controversy, garner the headlines, and create a scam about anyone you dislike. It helps, of course, if you are a controversial politician, and have many influential enemies gunning for you. Mickky Pacheco’s sin was not his bizarre sense of sexual morality. (A quote attributed to him reads: “You prove that I am married twice and I will step down. I am married only once, to Sara. I can have as many women as I want.” Mickky was flaunting his couldn’t-care-less approach, and his awareness of the silly natures of our Victorian-influenced and patriarchal bigamy and adultery laws.) Mickky’s big mistake was that he thought he could take on the powers-that-be, with ‘rape capital’-type headline-making comments, targeting Home Minister Ravi Naik over tourism crime and what not. But just look at the irony: the BJP, a party which leaned heavily on the Mickky Pachecos to rule a Goa they had no mandate to, was quick to ques-

The Hospice Hospital from the Vila de Margao is to submit to the superior authorities, a proposal for the new rules and regulations for its approval. It is reported that a Parish Priest from Mexico requested our Governor to send a relic of the Apostle of the Indies Saint Francis Xavier. It will gain from the creation of a Saddam Hussein, and it will gain even more while going out of its way to destroy him, and claim the propaganda victory. Mickky’s own colleagues, too, were more than eager to go for him. Suddenly, the police stepped up the pressure. The chief minister was making statements pointing out that he had not received complaints; was that an invite to solicit some? Then, even Mickky’s own colleagues in the NCP were swooping down, eagle like, wondering how they would fit into his ministerial shoes. This included swearing obeisance to the party’s alien-to-Goa leadership, brought in here thanks to the short-term political imperatives of politicians like Dr Wilfred de Souza. As if to complete the picture, a couple of ‘NGOs’ were quick to jump into the fray. In the last couple of years, if not more, players on various sides of the political fence have been building and cultivating their support base in ‘civil society’. Sometime back, politicians were threatening to set up

ooks and tastes like sand! screeched Cocky, my errant cockatoo. “Shhhh!” I whispered hoarsely, “You’re not in Bombay, where you can talk rubbish openly!” “Hey idiot, this...is...Bombay Talkie!” Cocky mouthed. She was right. We were in my friend Sunitha’s posh “Bombay Talkie” restaurant, on Ninth Avenue in Manhattan, gorging ourselves on Indian sweets. Cocky had ordered ‘sheera’ that golden sweet of semolina, sugar and ghee, but obviously it didn’t meet her expectations. “I want to see Sunitha!” spat Cocky, “This is not the real sheera, I want to sue the pants off her!” “Fat chance!” I said, “Sunitha is also a corporate attorney....and hot too - quite a number in the pants you want to sue off her!” “Keep your sexist remarks to yourself!” admonished Cocky, “I want you to taste this sheera yourself and tell me if it’s fit for the Games!” “What games?” I asked coldly, “We humans eat sweets, we don’t play games with them, like you do with your birdseed!” “Shut up!” snapped Cocky, “Waiter! Waiter!” she shrieked. A blue-turbaned

to try the accused for culpable homicide. There was an out-of-the court settlement between Union Carbide and the government of India on the quantum of compensation. Union Carbide had paid the compensation to the government of India and Supreme Court of India gave its approval.

Dirty politics Michael Vaz, Merces The death of Nadia Torrado under mysterious circumstances involving the name of a leading politician has once again brought Goa into the limelight, albeit for the wrong reasons. What is bothersome is that the minister after being grilled by the Crime Branch for almost 10 hours on Friday has tendered his resignation but has gone missing thereafter forcing the authorities to issue a look out circular (LOC) for him. It is becoming more and more clear that it is certainly not a simple case of taking Ratol, mistaking it for toothpaste, but far more complicated than what was initially contemplated. As for the State of Goa it is disgusting to note that its legislator who is the lawmaker has himself been evading the legal process by absconding instead of cooperating in solving the case. It is further appalling to state that he has been booked for so many criminal cases during the last few years. What a lesson for the electorate! Who is responsible for this state of affairs? Undoubtedly it is ‘we the people’ ever willing to dance to their tunes.

Reveal qualification Adelmo Fernandes, Vasco It is mandatory for any candidate standing for the Assembly elections to declare his/her assets, bank deposits, source of income, etc. All these deals with the financial aspects of the candidate. But then of late we have seen a PIL being filed because one of the ministers has allegedly given false information of his qualification. We also hear of another minister having a tussle with his ex-wife and is reportedly having a live-in relationship with another woman. In view of this it would be in the fitness of things for the candidate to declare his/her educational qualification and marital status of

NGOs by the hundred. We are seeing the fruits of this now. On any issue, one or the other ‘civil society’ group will jump into the fray, taking a stance that exactly suits some politician or the other. At least in the past, when NGOs were less influential, they could be largely trusted to take stands that they interpreted as being in Goa’s long-term interest. The worrying aspect of these ‘new style’ campaigns in Goa – fuelled by large and frequent headlines, and scarcely hidden political interests – is the manner in which it selectively targets some, lets go of others, quickly whips up a frenzy over certain issues, and then as speedily forgets them when they do not yield (political) capital any longer. Mickky is not alone. He too has played this game. John and the Russian rape caper; the pogrom against Calvert the Colva panch; the ‘German mother’ and ‘German girl’ issue targetting the son of Education Minister Babush Monserrate; and even the Scarlett case are all fresh in mind. In the last case, every attempt was made to implicate the son of Ravi Naik. It’s anyone’s guess whether those raking up such issues are keen to

clean-up Goa, or simply claim some gains for themselves. The message being sent out via Mickky is simply this: you can get away with murder (no pun intended), provided you stay on the right side of the powers-that-be. Stray a bit (politically, that is) and you’re deep in hot water. Nobody needs to be reminded of the way in which the alleged ‘Miramar Sex Scandal’ was artfully converted from an issue that was ‘worse than Jalgaon’ to one quickly forgotten. In today’s Goa, which side of the political fence you are on is much more important than ‘petty’ issues of morality and probity in public life. It makes sense to remember how politicians on different sides of the fence had a role in building up a Babush Monserrate, ensuring his electoral victory (primarily to defeat the Congress’s Somnath Zuwarkar), take his political support, defend him when the tax-man threatened, and then cash in on a media-fuelled scandal against him via his son. At a time when quite a few journalists have actively taken on the role of playing handmaiden to various politicians, it’s time to stop and consider how public emotions are being used for political goals. That the media itself gains from the sensationalism that emerges is another question. Mickky’s is not the only case involving the political, personal and sexual ethics of politicians. We need an assurance that such cases will be taken up to their logical conclusions, without selective bias and regardless of the affiliation of the politician involved. If one is left a bad taste in the mouth, it is because of the obvious politics involved. Goa needs clean-ups on many fronts. But playing political games and passing them off as a clean-up should not fool anybody. It is time the citizen resists his emotions being manipulated by politicians or the press. Those who come out with statements thick and fast when the target is a convenient politician, have the duty of ensuring that such issues are taken to their logical conclusion. Public memory is short, and there are enough people to cash in on it. Let’s not get caught up in the battles of one political mafia versus the other, or even one set of drug gangs versus the other.

Draw the line

hief Minister Digamabar Kamat’s statement that the claims made by Swedish model Lucky Farmhouse about a top politicians son being involved in the drug trade are ‘bogus’, shows that the government is not at all serious about eradicating the drug menace, or ending the nexus between drug dealers, cops and powerful politicians. The former girl friend of Israeli drug-dealer Yaniv Benahim alias Atala had claimed she knew a top politician’s son who was involved in the drugs racket, and offered to give the information to the police. The police chose to ignore her claim. They weren’t really interested. But, instead of castigating the police for their inertia, the CM’s statement that the model should have come and given her information to the police, suggests that the government doesn’t want to know about the cop-drug dealer-politician nexus either. That is truly unfortunate. We should draw the line where drugs are concerned.

Letters to the Editor Letter of the Day

On a bragging trip

Dr. Francisco Colaco, Margao

The council of ministers headed by Chief Minister Digambar Kamat recently celebrated three “successful” years in power. To mark the occasion, a book “Golden Glow”, was released. The celebration function at the Maquinezes was reportedly a grand trip of self-praise and self- glorification. There were no tears for the aam admi. At least PM Manmohan Singh in his interview to the nation to commemorate his government’s anniversary candidly admitted he could have done better and that many decisions of his party may have been wrong. As far as Digamber and his MLAs are concerned there are (and there will be) no regrets. He and all his Ali abas ride on the crest of a mirage: false sense of popularity As Digamber plays “Dom Bom” (Mr. Good), he and his greedy MLAs, become adept at burying public sentiment and genuine outcry. Attempts are made to silence voices of genuine dissent by dividing them on the one hand and by suffocating them with threats by monstrous money and muscle power, on the other. Digamber’s popularity is seemingly on the ascendant. However, if he chooses to disregard the writing on the wall, even before the summit, there could come the mighty fall. the candidate. Hence provision should be made in the Representation of People’s Act for the candidate to furnish information regarding these two aspects namely educational qualification and marital status( i.e. whether single/married or whether he or she practices bigamy or Polygamy or has a live-in relationship) besides his/her assets..

Miserable status Augustus Alphonso, Vasco I would like to endorse a letter regarding the pitiable condition of the Margao bus terminus. Sincerely, this is the case with just about every government in Goa and the Panaji bus terminus is not an exception. The flooring is miserable as it is in Margao, and the roofing is in the same state. Unless, there is a maintenance done on an annual basis, nothing better could be expected in such public places. Waste bins must be provided at every 20 meter radius and commuters must be fined heavily for littering the place. It is high time that the concerned authorities stop bringing shame to our tiny state of Goa which is already under attack for corruption in various government departments. But for God's sake, even if corruption is in vogue within the government, at least let those things that can be seen with the naked eye appear to be respectful

(I mean these bus stations)..

Forgotten lesson Gustavo Godinho, Nagoa This may be taken as a short class of civics by the ministers of Goa,as they have really forgotten the basics of political science taught to them by their teachers when they were in school. Dear ministers, when you become a political leader or a minister you become a public servant. Because, in a democracy people choose a leader who they think is knowledgeable, efficient and capable of solving the land’s problems. On the other hand the elected leader works to fulfill the expectations of the people who elected him. In short, people elect their representatives to work for the State, and the elected leaders understand their responsibilities and performs his duties accordingly. This is the real functioning of democracy. But unfortunately our educated leaders of Goa have forgotten this simple lesson they had learned in school. May be the money they can see around them is responsible for this. But I hope this short class of civics will help them to brush up their forgotten lessons and and capable of solving the land’s problems.

Drug nexus Arwin Mesquita, UAE Can Goa's chief minister stop making false statements to protect his government and its incompetence; by saying that there are no politicians involved in the recently exposed drugs scandal. It is well known that drug trafficking in Goa, has the active support of powerful Goan politicians. It is good that the tourism minister was made to resign recently on another issue, but what then about the ministers involved in the drug trade. Most illegal activities happen in Goa with the support of politicians. Yes there is corruption in the police ranks but this is facilitated right from the start, when police recruits are supposed to pay huge payments to MLAs to secure their jobs. I think the police are made scapegoats and the politicians are left scot free.

Butterfly movie Errol D'Souza, Porvorim Well done to film Director Sarthak Dasgupta for his intriguing and awesome reality film The Great Indian butterfly as the movie, filmed in Goa , aims to tell viewers where to find real happiness in life and the contrast between simplicity and toughness. The film also depicts a lot of reality which has touched upon rare human emotions and has conveyed the important point without any confusion and the situations are dealt with a lot of simplicity by saying that happiness is right under your own nose.

Exposed fuse-box Pravin U. Sardessai, Adpai A fuse-box on a streetlight pole situated near the Divza circle (along the road proceeding towards Ribandar) is lying in an exposed condition for almost six months. Linesmen of the Electricity department deputed at this strategic location have failed to view this matter with the seriousness it deserves. The degrading situation must not continue, but end at once on a permanent basis. The much needed protective cover needs to be fitted to this box . Disastrous results emerging out of negligence of the concerned department needs to be avoided at all costs. I hope this fuse-box is provided the necessary cover at once.

Paths of Wisdom Good vs. Evil

By Kahlil Gibran

“...You are good when you are one with yourself. Yet when you are not one with yourself you are not evil. For a ship without rudder may wander aimlessly among perilous isles yet sink not to the bottom. You are good when you strive to give of yourself. Yet you are not evil when you seek gain for yourself. For when you strive for gain you are but a root that clings to the earth and sucks at her breast. You are good when you are fully awake in your speech. Yet you are not evil when you sleep while your tongue staggers without purpose. And even stumbling speech may strengthen a weak tongue. You are good when you walk to your goal firmly and with bold steps. Yet you are not evil when you go thither limping. Even those who limp go not backward. But you who are strong and swift, see that you do not limp before the lame, deeming it kindness. You are good in countless ways, and you are not evil when you are not good. You are only loitering and sluggard. Pity that the stags cannot teach swiftness to turtles. In your longing for your giant self lies your goodness: and that longing is in all of you. But in some of you, that longing is a torrent rushing with might to the sea, carrying the secrets of the hillsides and the songs of the forest. And in others it is a flat stream that loses itself in angles and bends and lingers before it reaches the shore. But let not him who longs much say to him who longs little, “Wherefore are you slow and halting?” For the truly good ask not the naked, ‘Where is your garment?’ nor the houseless, ‘What has befallen your house?’ “ (Courtesy: The ‘Prophet’)Chinna Katha”)

Stop squealing, start roaring By jOAquIm CORREIA-AfONSO

T

he Hon. Minister for Public Works and Rural Development, who I used to hold in high regard as a champion fighting for what was good for Goa and her people, has said that Goans squeal like pigs, and that they oppose every ‘development’ project. Yes, Goans protest against ‘mega-projects’. But that’s because they have nothing to do with development. On the contrary, they hamper the development of villages by placing an extra burden on the existing infrastructure, specially electricity and water. Why shouldn’t they squeal? Goans are not the beneficiaries of any kick-backs, though one gets the distinct impression that our politicians are getting mega-bucks from the megaprojects. And the only ‘development’ taking place as a result, is purely personal. In fact, just squealing will not do. Goans have to shout at the tops of their voices in order to make themselves heard by the ministers sitting high up in their ivory towers, unaware and unconcerned about the problems that beset the local people. They pamper the migrant population, leaving the niz Goenkar to face his troubles on his own. Goans oppose projects that are approved by the authorities but which go against or are in clear violation of the rules. For example, as mandated by law, a 10-metre width access road is shown on the plan. But actually, on the ground, the existing road has a width of just three metres. In some cases, the sewage is directed into the river or water bodies, or into paddy fields. Should Goans accept this meekly and keep quiet? The ministers claim that the projects have the necessary approvals from the concerned authorities. Are the authorities allowed to give approvals even when projects are in clear violation of the law? What action does the government take against the personnel responsible from the departments that give approvals for projects that go against the law? When the common man applies for approvals in accordance with the law, it takes months and months, and visits after visits to the various departments to obtain the necessary approvals. But the big builders of mega projects get their approvals very quickly. Obviously, their generosity towards the personnel in the departments liberally lubricates the passage of their files. And if the mega-project is so flagrantly in violation of the rules that they dare not clear it, those in these departments play a little game of ‘passing the buck’ between themselves. The mega-project files are purposely kept pending beyond the admissible limit, and this gives the mega players the benefit of a ‘deemed approval’, thanks to deliberate departmental ‘negligence’. Goan ministers want National Highway 17, passing from north to South through Goa, to have a width of 45 metres. I spent about two weeks in Kerala recently. The Government of Kerala was reported to have sent a delegation to the centre, headed by the chief minister of the state himself, to request that the width of the very same National Highway 17, which also passes through that state, be restricted to 30 metres. Why does ‘narrow’ Goa need a ‘broad’ width of 45 metres? Does that also have to with kick-backs, or is it merely that our government cares much less about Goans than the Kerala government cares about its people? The Government of Kerala had also started the distribution of compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) to individual households, to help save scarce electricity. Here in Goa, we only get empty promises and hollow statements. No action or implementation. Oink, oink… No. Squealing is not going to help the niz Goenkar. Even to be heard at all, the Goan is forced to shout at the top of his or her voice. Squealing like pigs will not help the people affected by the road widening. Forced to protest, they are going to have to learn to make their voices heard loud and clear. At every step, Goans will have to shout. They will have to roar like lions to protect their land, to protect their heritage, to save the hills and forests from destruction, to save the water bodies from being used as septic tanks, to save the paddy fields from being filled or being used as soak pits. So let’s listen to the minister and stop squealing like pigs. Let us start roaring like lions instead!

PMO: details of PM-Tharoor meet secret PTI NEW DELHI, JUNE 8

The PMO has refused to make public the details of the meetings Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had with Shashi Tharoor just before his resignation as Minister of State for External Affairs at the height of IPL controversy in April, citing exemption in matters of national security and "confidential" third party information. The Prime Minister's Office, after taking the views of External Affairs Ministry, said details of meetings where matters relating to country's sovereignty and integrity, its security, strategic, scientific, or economic interests and relations with foreign States are discussed cannot be given under the Right to Information Act. It also said that details of meetings where "confidential third party information" is discussed cannot be given under the transparency law. Fifty-four-year-old Tharoor resigned on April 18 after IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi revealed that the Thiruvananthapuram MP's friend Sunanda Pushkar had equity stake in Rendezvous Sports World (RSW), heading the consortium that

An unnecessary controversy has been kicked up by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board with a claim that The Wakf (Amendment) Bill passed by the Lok Sabha on the last day of budget session on May 7 will jeopardise the Muslims' claim over the demolished Babri Masjid site. Vice President Hamid Ansari has made a strong pitch for an international legal regime against terrorism, saying the menace knows no boundaries and seriously threatens global peace and security. The recent incidents of terrorism in India and other countries serve as a grim reminder that the scourge of terrorism was severely affecting the civilised life, Ansari said. "It knows no boundaries and seriously threatens international peace and security," he said addressing a banquet hosted by President of the Senate of the Parliament of Czech Republic Premysl Sobotka last night. The Vice President said the international community must continue and reinvigorate its collective efforts to strengthen global cooperation to eradicate terrorism in all its forms. "Swift and credible steps must be taken to eliminate terrorist safe havens. There is an urgent need to strengthen the global consensus and the legal regime against terrorism, including early adoption of the long over-

on which the Babri Mosque stood and where the RSS-backed Hindu chauvinists want to build the Ram Mandir. The Muslim Law Board, however, insists that one of the amendments in the Bill weakens the Muslims' case as the property is not registered as stipulated under the Bill. They are irked by a provision for registration of the Wakf properties by the 'mutawalli' (caretaker) or "the Wakf or his descendants or a beneficiary of the wakf or any Muslim belonging to the sect to which the Wakf belongs."

Israel to probe flotilla raid on its own AFP JERUSALEM, JUNE 9

Israel plans to hold its own limited probes into its deadly raid

on a Gaza-bound flotilla that fall short of calls for an international inquiry into the commando operation that drew world con-

demnation. The probes will look exclusively into the legality of Israel's naval blockade of Gaza and the May 31 raid on an aid flotilla that sought to break it, minister without portfolio Benny Begin told public radio on Tuesday. But Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said his country would raise at the United Nations the question of who should investigate Israel's deadly raid. "Unfortunately, this act happened in international waters, which is another source for concern," Putin said during a press conference on the sidelines of an Istanbul summit on security in Asia. Turkey sought a fresh condemnation of Israel from regional leaders gathered for the summit. The hosts have been calling for an independent fact-finding panel under UN supervision, a demand rejected by Israel which insists an internal investigation is more than adequate. In Israel, media criticised hawkish Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for restricting the probe's mandate to theoretical legal questions, saying it would be little more than a

"committee-lite" or an "investigative committee without investigators." "It is not supposed to investigate whether the blockade policy as a whole is either effective or justified... And that is the recipe by means of which the government is trying to ensure the failure of the investigation into the flotilla events," the massselling Yediot Aharonot said. Defence Minister Ehud Barak has made it clear that the commandos who carried out the deadly raid should not be put on the stand. "I insist that the combatants, who carried out a task that we imposed on them and who had to make decisions in split seconds about whether to pull the trigger without taking legal considerations into account, not be questioned," he said. Israel is reportedly considering a team made up of Israeli jurists and former diplomats as well as two foreign observers. This would fall far short of the independent, international investigation several world leaders have called for in the wake of the commando raid in which nine Turkish activists were killed.

The commission also expressed its extreme displeasure for not replying to its six letters written by the chairperson to the Goa chief minister and the Chief secretary, adding that the State government did not even have the courtesy to at least acknowledge the letters of the chairperson. The commission has directed the State government to make available all records as and when desired by the petitioner and also to start acquisition of land forthwith under urgency clause on top most priority for allotment of the same for the Muslim kabrastan. The government has been directed to keep the commission informed of the developments of the case from time to time. Meanwhile, the commission has said the government may take immediate steps to strengthen and improve the condition of the existing burial ground. On the land acquisition for the proposed kabrastan, the commission has asked the Goa government to submit report of actions taken and progress in the matter necessarily by the 25th of every month on a regular basis till the conclusion of the case. We hope that he can actually get over the present conditions in the time that remains. We are ready for dialogue within the frame of justice and respect.” The United States contends Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons, while Iran argues its nuclear program is peaceful. The deal was brokered by Turkey and Brazil last month.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Tuesday in Istanbul. AGENCIES ISTANBUL, JUNE 8

Leaders of Russia, Turkey and Iran met at a security summit in Istanbul on Tuesday in a display of regional power that appeared to be calculated to test the United States just days before a scheduled Americanbacked debate in the United Nations Security Council on imposing tighter sanctions over Iran’s nuclear program. In remarks at the gathering of regional leaders, the third of its kind dedicated to increasing cooperation and security in Asia, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran said a nuclear agreement brokered by Turkey and Brazil last month was a one-time opportunity and other countries had called to express their support for it. “We’ve seen a lot of support from the international arena,” he said, according to the Turkey’s official Anatolian News Agency. “This is the voice of ever yone’s heart.” Mr. Ahmadinejad also maintained a de-

v

fiant posture toward the United States. “If the US and its allies think they could hold the stick of sanctions and then sit and negotiate with us, they are seriously mistaken,” he told a news conference, according to Iran’s state-run Press TV satellite broadcaster. European and American officials say the vote on sanctions could come as early as Wednesday. Ahmadinejad said Iran would not repeat its recent offer to send part of its stockpile out of Iran for enrichment. The accord, supported by Brazil and Turkey, was designed to break the deadlock over its nuclear program, according to Iran. “The Tehran declaration provided an opportunity for the United States government and its allies. We had hoped and we are still hopeful that they use the opportunity well,” Ahmadinejad said. “I must say opportunities like this will not be repeated again.” He added: “We were thinking

Bharti buys Zain's Africa biz PtI NEW DELHI, JUNE 8

In the largest ever telecom takeover by an Indian firm, Bharti Airtel today completed a deal to buy Kuwait-based Zain Telecom's African business for USD 10.7 billion (about Rs 48,000 crore). Announcing the closure of the deal, Sunil Mittal said, "We are delighted at the closure of this transformational deal for India and Bharti Airtel. The transaction is the largest ever cross-border deal in an emerging market and will result in combined revenues of about USD 13 billion." On March 30, 2010, Bharti had entered the deal to acquire Zain Telecom's operations in 15 nations, excluding Sudan and Morocco. Zain has operations in 17 African countries. The closure of the deal implies that Bharti has received all the approvals from the governments and regulators of each of these 15 nations. This acquisition, besides giving Bharti its much-desired presence in Africa, makes it the world's fifth largest wireless company with operations across 18 countries and a subscriber base of around 179 million. Bharti had failed twice in the last two year's to forge an USD 23 billion merger deal with South African telecom giant

MTN. The Zain acquisition, the second largest by an Indian entity after Tatas' Corus deal, would take the revenue of the combined entity to an estimated USD 13 billion. The African business would widen Bharti's reach, which was hitherto restricted to Asia and the Indian Ocean region with businesses in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Seychelles. Of the USD 10.7 billion enterprise value of Zain, Bharti will be paying USD 8.3 billion upfront and USD 700 million after a year. It would also take over approximately USD 1.7 billion of Zain's debts as on December 31, 2009. Of the USD 8.3 billion paid to Zain, Bharti has raised debt from a consortium of foreign banks and State Bank of India with the lead-arranger and lead-advisor Standard Chartered Bank committing the highest amount -- USD 1.3 billion, followed by Barclays at USD 900 million. The rest of the co-advisors - ANZ, BNP, Bank of AmericaMerrill Lynch, Credit Agricole CIB, DBS, HSBC, Bank of TokyoMitsubishi UFJ and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation -have allocated USD 600 million each. State Bank of India has agreed to an up to USD one billion loan in rupee terms.

Govt approves setting up of six new SEZs

PTI NEW DELHI, JUNE 8

The government today approved six applications for setting up new Special Economic Zones in the country, including proposals from L&T and Hindalco, while the Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Haryana SEZ has been given

a time extension. The interministerial Board of Approval (BoA), the nodal body for SEZ-related matters, also allowed developers to withdraw four of their SEZ proposals. The applicants, which included Bata India, had cited a slowdown in the IT industry as

the reason for pulling out of the projects. Despite some developers pulling out of their SEZ projects, renewed interest from industrial investors is visible in the tax-free enclaves due to the smart recovery in economic activity. Realty major DLF, which had withdrawn four SEZ pro-

posals last year, received permission for revival of one such project in Kolkata. Along with the Reliance Haryana SEZ, which will come up on the outskirts of the National Capital Region, 32 other developers have been given time extensions to execute their projects.

These include TCS, Uttam Galva, Unitech Reality Projects Ltd and the Navi Mumbai SEZ. "The Board of Approval (BoA) has approved the requests for extension of time of all the developers," Commerce Ministry Additional Secretary D K Mittal told reporters here after the BoA

meeting. The Navi Mumbai SEZ had sought additional time for establishing its three IT zones in Maharashtra. The company has been facing problems in land acquisition. TCS had also asked for additional time for its IT SEZ in Gujarat.

Baldauf readies to revive AI PTI BERLIN, JUNE 8

Capt Gustav Baldauf, the first chief operating officer of Air India, today said the government was clear that the ailing national carrier has to be turned around, noting that detailed plans, including adding new destinations, have been prepared for immediate implementation. "Government has made a clear statement that it wants the airline to change and improve. It has allowed independent Directors to be on the airline's Board. There is a clear understanding in the Board and the government on the targets," Baldauf said on the sidelines of the annual general meeting of the IATA here. Asked how would he deal with the different work culture in Air India as it was a government organisation, Baldauf, who earlier worked in Jet Airways as VP (Operations), said "I know it is a different process. It is not a private company. But we definitely have systems in place. It is easier to work in a government environment. There is a big, big potential in this company." He said "the stake holder (govt) would tell the Board what it wants, and the Board in turn would tell the executive what to do. Everyone knows what the problem is. So we have to give them clear targets on which they will have to work and accomplish those targets".

The new COO, an Austrian national, said plans have been worked out for improving the operations and financials of Air India, but he would be primarily involved with operational issues. He, however, did not give any details. To a question whether he would be able to work with the "same speed" in decision-making as during his stint with Jet Airways, Baldauf said "we cannot expect the same speed, but I am confident that the results will be the same as in the case of Jet Airways". Air India CMD Arvind Jadhav, said all legalities and the salary packages have been worked out and Baldauf has signed the contract of appointment. Baldauf, who has also worked as executive VP (Flight Operations) in Austrian Airlines and Air Canada earlier, said he has just received his employment visa approval from the Indian government. He would be the first expatriate in the management team of the country's flag carrier. He said plans had been put in place for achieving a turnaround for the organisation. "We have to break it (the plan) into pieces and implement them." Burdened by high fuel and labour costs, cash-strapped Air India suffered a net loss of Rs 5,548 crore in 2008-09, as its total revenue fell to Rs 13,479 crore in FY'09 from Rs 15,252 crore during the previous fiscal.

BY DOLCY D’CRUZ HERALD FEATURES ne is often left in a dilemma when it comes to taking care of the elders. Doing the medically right thing, looking after them at home, keeping note of medicines and giving the right doses at the right time are some of the things that have to be kept in mind when attending to the elderly. Fortunately, in Goa, we have an institute which trains both men and women to work as home nurses, assistant cum hospital attendants and even in child care. Indian Student’s Educational Aid Foundation (ISEAF) is a registered NGO based in Siolim which has been working for the underprivileged students since the last 15 years. One of their important activities is to provide financial assistance or scholarship for the education of poor and meritorious students irrespective of caste, creed or religion. The foundation was founded by Rudolf Schwartz, a German who visits Goa twice every year and provides all the resources through various sponsors. Home Nursing Service Scheme is one of the courses provided through the institute. Home Nursing Bureau is provided at three different centres in Goa with Keerti Vidyalaya Technical Institute having the Founder: Rudolf Schwartz largest strength of students. The other two centres are Bhumika Technical Institute at Paliem and Dasya at Porvorim. The one year course is open to anyone of the age of 18 and above regardless of whether the student is married, a widow or a woman with the zeal to study and provide service after completion of the course. Once the course is completed, the students have to sign a bond stating that they will work for six months live-in duty. Stella Jacobs, Student’s Counselor at Keerti Vidyalaya says, “The institute is flooded with requests and we cannot meet with the demand. There are students joining the institute in batches of 25, which eventually is not enough

HERALD FEATURES Have you seen the film yet? Yes, Ridley showed it two weeks ago and it’s very exciting. It’s great. Is it what you hoped it would be? Is it the way Ridley described it to you? The thing with Ridley is that he always tells a tale and every time he tells it, he embellishes it and the story keeps growing and takes more twists (laughs). It’s a really tricky thing tonally, but it works, and that’s what I’m really excited about. If you think about all the Robin Hoods over time, they have always been quite jaunty and buoyant, but Ridley and Russell make a different kind of film. And they have somehow harnessed that ‘Taming of the Shrew’ quality that exists between Marion and Robin—a cheeky buoyancy, but still manage to get in this really testosterone filled adventure and amazing ride. They have really delicately balanced all those flavours. When you are making a historical drama, the details are important. How important were the sets designed by Arthur Max? The Nottingham set was incredible. It was complete and worked in everyone’s favour in the end because the film was meant to begin a year or so earlier, but the set had already been built so it sat there on the land. The idea was tossed back and forth and by the time we went in, it had already aged a couple of hundred years. (laughs) It looked fantastic. So that was a real help? Yes, it was because you just had a mental map of how small their universe was and the thought of venturing to France is really like outer space. That was their world and the notion that Robin could be responsible for uniting all of the minor dukes and what have you around, to gather them together, was massive. It’s like going to the four corners of the Earth. What’s Marion like? In the past she has been rather passive and I understand your Marion is far more proactive… When Ridley first approached me I asked, ‘Do I have to be a damsel-in-distress’? He said, ‘Oh no, we’ll give you a sword at some point.’ I think the reality of her position of having to run that estate, especially given Sir Walter’s blindness and frailty,

Playing role of Hitler H will be challenging: Anupam Kher

ollywood actor Anupam Kher has that playing the role of Adolf Hitler in the upcoming film ‘My Friend Hitler’ would be challenging. Addressing media persons, Kher said: “For me... I already have an image, I am a known actor, so it will be doubly hard work for me to take away that image, and an actor likes taking challenges,” said Kher. Actress Neha Dhupia would be playing the role of Eva Braun, Hitler’s lover, and said she is very excited to work with Kher. “I am really looking forward to working with Anupam Kher, and it’ll be exciting, it’ll be educative. I’ll learn things on the set everyday. We are going to be doing some workshops together to make sure,” said Dhupia. The director of the film, Rakesh Ranjan Kumar, said that the film would be released in both the Indian and international cinemas. He added that Hitler was the most successful loser of the twentieth Century and he wants to interpret the reasons for that. “As a leader, he was successful. I want to show these things. Why did he lose as a human being, what were the problems, what were the issues, what were his intentions, this is what we want to show,” said Kumar. Kumar also said that Kher and Dhupia are the actors best-suited for their roles, as both of them bear resemblance to the characters they are playing.

means that she’s a capable woman. And it sure was extraordinary to work with Max Von Sydow. There’s a scene in the film when we’re sitting on a hill and the man is an ancient rock and it was an incredible thing to sit beside him in this film. I think what Ridley wanted was to portray the reality of the situation and the unsentimental relationship after the death of her husband. He wasn’t interested in that kind of a woman. He was interested in the woman who has to get on and do things. Is it (Albrecht) Durer who does those amazing etchings of women in the fields? It was those sorts of reference points that he was giving me. Robin and Marion’s love story has always been part of the myth. Is it part of the film? Yes, they get together as it were. I haven’t given away anything (laughs)! It’s a love story in a ‘Taming of the Shrew’ kind of way. Russell says that he made a very public proposal to get you to play Marion. What happened? When we were made stamps, he proposed! (laughs). And I accepted. Did he warn you that he was going to do it? Yes, he told me he was going to do it and I said ‘I dare you!’ And I don’t know, I batted something back at him. We have quite a healthy banter going on between us, I think. What was it like to work with him? It was really fabulous. The thing about Russell is that he cares so deeply about every element of what goes into making a film. That love and that sense of importance about what one is doing are infectious. Besides, he’s a dad and his lovely boys were there, and I had my kids there and they all sort of mucked in and absolutely loved it. And also where we were staying was absolutely idyllic. There was a little brook into the backfield where the kids went to school—the whole thing for them was fantastic. I mean, bows and arrows and horses and amour and Russell Crowe, it was heaven! To sum up, it sounds like making Robin Hood was a very positive experience. It was. It was a real thrill. I’ve never been part of a film like that. And I’ve always wanted to work with Ridley and I think Russell is a superb actor, so it was great.

er personal life may have been messy in recent times but Hollywood actress Sandra Bullock is still upbeat about her professional work and will be seen teaming up with her former co-star Ryan Reynolds in a new action comedy, ‘Most Wanted’. The 45-year-old star, who recently made her first public appearance since her split from husband Jesse James, is attached to the upcoming project that could see her up with Reynolds, who costarred with her in ‘The Proposal’, Universal Pictures and Mandeville Films said. “The project is currently in development and she is looking forward to reading the script,” said Bullock's representative. The film revolves around a criminal suspect (which could be played by Bullock) who is escorted to court by an FBI agent (Reynolds) when they are ambushed on the way and forced to go on the run. Beside starring in ‘Most Wanted’, Reynolds will serve as executive producer with his partner Jonathan Komack Martin. Meanwhile, Peter Chiarelli has been hired to write the script for this action comedy that is tentatively scheduled for 2013 release and movie bosses are in talks to bring the film's director Anne Fletcher on board for the project.

The All Goa Youth Fusion Concert a Melodious Success

First World Konkani Cultural Convention

T

HERALD FEATURES he youth fusion concert saw the coming together of about a hundred young talents in music from the length and breadth of the state. The youth performed on various musical instruments like violin, guitar, tabla, drums, keyboards, saxophone and trumpet, to a packed audience at Ravindra Bhavan Auditorium, Margao. The show, organised by Fr. Peter Cardozo, musician and music instructor, laid the platform for young amateur artistes to showcase their talent fearlessly and efficiently, performing as one unit, all together. The performances by the young children enchanted the audience. Sam Vaz performed ‘In the Mood’ on the keyboards, while Marushka Rebello, a student of voice training from the Sonata Music School sang the song ‘Yesterday’ in her melodious voice and Cielda Pereira and Nezba Fortes performed the Chris Perry composition ‘Cucurucu’. Ramnath Shirodkar’s unique style of playing the harmonica with his nose held the audience’s attention, and so did Delcy Silveira on the trumpet and Natasha Noronha on saxophone. Rahul Naik sang his way through the evening with ‘Footsteps’ and Nadia Rebello was a treat to the ears while singing the Portuguese number ‘Minha Maezinha Querida’. The show was just a small reminder of the talent present in the state and seeing young people taking up the musical instrument like the saxophone and trumpet shows that there is hope for a great musical future in the state.

BY MUMTAZ YAKUB SHAIKH HERALD FEATURES he summer this year saw temperatures soaring to an all time high, heat strokes claiming lives and wells beginning to dry with the parched Earth awaiting relief, a glimpse of which we have already seen. Rampant mining, hollowing out of hillsides leaving behind gaping wounds, destruction of the local flora, cemented blacktops without tree covers, haphazard constructions without proper sewage and drain facilities and the ever-growing traffic are all a sign of disturbed progress. Like it was said, “Every time a child is born unto us, is a sign that God is not yet displeased with us,” the efforts at recognition and reawakening in instituting symbols like Earth Day, World Environment day are a kind of second chance. “Let us not look to others for solutions. The answers lie in our hands and the efforts that can evoke these changes are ours,” says Maendra Alvares, owner of Big Foot. On World Environment Day, extensive projects utilising simple methods or reinvesting in and re-harnessing natural resources were displayed to the visitors at the Big Foot. Specific methods that were easy to follow were demonstrated to the guests in cases like the water harvesting projects. Rain trees are easy to plant and nurture and they grow well and fast, was one advice given. The guests were also apprised of the seriousness of the dwindling water table and what methods they could use to recycle their daily used water were discussed. Further speaking on the pertinent issue, Maendra said, “We can promote a small effort that is positive in nature; people living in apartments can invest in potted plants, and those with gardens can and should have greenery that is evocative of promoting long-term greenery. These are simple solutions. You can also harvest the waste water of your kitchen and bath as it is good for gardens and does not include wasting fresher sources.

Football fiesta at Clube Gaspar Dias HERALD CORRESPONDENT MERCES, JUNE 8

With the football World Cup just two days away from kickoff, the fever has begun to catch among the football crazy fans of Goa and to cash in on the extravaganza, several clubs/hotels have added live screening to their menu so that they don’t let go off the opportunity. However, the Aviation Services Management (ASM) Football Fiesta promises to be a lot different than the others as accompanied by live screening, it promises to promote football awareness among the fans through games, quizzes, contests and a loads of entertainment. So, for the next one month, from June 11 to July 11, Clube Gaspar Dias at Mira Mar will be virtually transformed into a football arena complete with a stadium-like set up including elevated stands for seating, football branding, large screens, etc so that the spectators get the feel of watching a game live from a stadium. This was disclosed by Vito Gomes, founder and Managing Director of ASM at a press briefing at the clube on Tuesday. Reiterating that the aim of organising the event is to spread football awareness and encourage youngsters to develop their skills, Vito said that the event will be a first of its kind on this side of the planet and informed that raking up the moolah has never been the purpose behind the event.

Stating that the sitting capacity of the venue will be 200 persons, Vito informed that there will be two screens at the venue, each admeasuring 12 ft x 9 ft, so that the experience of watching live game remains intact. “Activities will begin before the start of the first match to add to the build up of the game,” he added. Generally speaking on football scenario in Goa, Vito said that it is nowhere close to Europe or even the Middle-East due to lack of infrastructure and support from the government. He further urged the GFA to convince the government to allocate funds in the budget to support

budding talents in the State who cannot afford to buy football kit. Yolanda de Sousa Kammermeir, who was present at the briefing said that unlike earlier times, now the opportunities have increased tremendously for the youth and urged them to grab them. She, however, added that there are lot of distractions which have made it difficult for youngsters to remain focused. “The budding youngsters should take example from players like Brandon Fernandes who has shown maturity beyond his age,” Yolanda exhorted and informed that the support of fam-

ilies and close friends goes a long way in giving moral support to the youth. Speaking on the occasion, Stanley Fernandes, Trade Marketing Manager of Budweiser, said that Budweiser has been associated with FIFA in the promotion of football the world over and that they are proud to be associated with this event. He further informed that Budweiser will sponsor two people from Goa to watch the quarter-finals in South Africa and the winners will be decided at the ASM Football Fiesta. Footballer Brandon Fernandes also spoke.

It’s a risk to keep Robben in: Dutch coach AP JOHANNESBURG, JUNE 8

Bert van Marwijk is taking a gamble by keeping injured Dutch winger Arjen Robben in his World Cup squad, the coach said on Monday. The Bayern Munich player is to remain part of the squad despite hurting his left hamstring in Saturday's 6-1 rout of Hungary in a friendly in Amsterdam. "We had an ideal (World Cup) warm up until the injury," Van Marwijk said. "But I'm willing to take the risk of keeping Robben in my squad. "In the past such an injury would take four to six weeks (to clear) but the methods nowadays have developed," he added. Robben is confident he will be fit to rejoin his Dutch teammates, who arrived in South Africa on Sunday. "I will do all I can to get fit in time," he told reporters after having treatment in Rotterdam. "I am very hopeful and now we have to see how we can speed up the process. "I am almost sure I will travel to South Africa but right now I can't say if that will be in four days or a week.” "I'm glad he (Van Marwijk) gave me time to recover and did not call in a replacement," added Robben.” Striker Robin van Persie, who has scored four goals in his last three matches, said the injury was a blow to the squad. "Everyone was very down after it happened because he is an important player in our team," said Van Persie after training, here. "With his own style and qualities Arjen has something others don't have," he added. Captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst echoed Van Persie's comments. "It is normal that everyone is affected if you see how close this team is," said Van Bronckhorst. "But it can also make us stronger. That is something we have been working on, the mental part, for two years now," he added. The Dutch start their campaign against Group E opponents Denmark next Monday.

Nani, four goals in 34 games for his country to date - including three during qualifying - suffered the injury in training on Friday and the 23-year-old will now be replaced by Ruben Amorim of Benfica. The Manchester United winger had missed Saturday's training session by precaution after sustaining a shoulder injury which did not look serious enough to rule him out of the tournament. Under FIFA rules, a player can be replaced until the day before their first match.

Rooney raring to go for England AP RUSTENBURG, JUNE 8

Wayne Rooney played down concerns over England's lacklustre World Cup build-up and insisted he was raring to go ahead of the opening group C clash with the United States here on Saturday. Fabio Capello's side have looked unconvincing in their warm-up internationals against Mexico and Japan and that impression was confirmed by another disjointed display in the 3-0 win over South African Premier League side Platinum Stars on Monday. England did however look much sharper once Rooney came on as a second half substitute and the Manchester United striker created his side's second goal before claiming the third for himself. "It was a good run-out, we needed to get the game in and to play 45 minutes felt good so I was happy," Rooney said. "I think we got out of it what we needed. I would have liked to have got a bit more of a game but I was happy with the 45 minutes.” "We are ready - these are preparation games for us for the big one now coming up on Saturday. I just can't wait now. The sooner it comes, the better." Rooney's input into Monday's match came at a price with the striker picking up a booking for dissent and generally charging around in a manner which would have reminded many England fans of his conduct in the 2006 quarter-final against Portugal, in which he was sent off before England lost out in a penalty shoot-out. Teammate Jermain Defoe however believes that Rooney cannot completely shed his aggressive, competitive edge. "When you've got that fire in your belly as a player can be good," Defoe said. "If you take that away from Wayne, then he won't be the same player." Defoe backed Rooney's view that England are ready to challenge at this World Cup, although he acknowledged they were still adjusting to the 1500m-plus altitude of South Africa's high veldt. "It was a really good work out. With the conditions, the altitude and the heat, it made it difficult, but it helped with the fitness for what is ahead. "You do notice the altitude here when you're running around. It's different, and we're a lot higher here than we were in Austria but I'm sure we'll get used to it in training.”

Portugal thrash Mozambique FRIENDLY

Portugal players celebrate after Hugo Almeida (centre) scored a goal on Tuesday. AGENCIES JOHANNESBURG, JUNE 8

Hugo Almeida scored twice Tuesday, leading Portugal to a 3-0 win over Mozambique in a World Cup warmup match. After failing to convert their dominance into goals in the first half against a team ranked 85th in the world, the Portuguese

scored three times in 30 minutes after the break. Danny received a pass from Deco, sidestepped the goalkpeeper and tapped in the ball in the 51st minute. He then crossed from the left to set up Almeida's short-range strike. Goalkeeper Lama couldn't hold a fierce shot from substi-

Not alcohol but contract ruined me: Symonds

UNI LONDON, JUNE 8

Controversy-prone Australian allrounder Andrew Symonds has blamed the special contract he had signed with Cricket Australia for his downfall and erratic behaviour on and off the field and said he does not regret losing his place in the national side. ''The only real regret I have in cricket? Signing that contract,'' Symonds said. ''If I had my time again I would have said, 'You know what? There is no way I am signing that.' No one else had to do it. And let's be honest, under that sort of scrutiny I was always going to bust at some stage,'' he added. The special contract he had signed with the CA forbade him from drinking. And when he was seen drinking in a hotel bar before the World Twenty20 last

year, Cricket Australia tore up Symonds's contract and sent him home. For Symonds, who makes his debut for Surrey against Gloucestershire today, international career in ruins, it was not regret he felt, but relief. ''Losing my contract did not hurt me, because of what playing for Australia had become. I was not having fun anymore. I was not enjoying it. I felt like I was in a cage. Always under the microscope. Once I had got home from England, and everything had settled down, it was a relief,'' Symonds told 'The Guardian'. Symonds admitted that problems grew serious as he did not have enough time for himself which led him to binge-drinking. ''I was diagnosed as a bingedrinker. With all the things that went with international cricket there was never enough time for myself. So when I got my day off, I would just guzzle it, guzzle it like they were not making it anymore, just binge. It was not smart,'' he said. The drinking habit affected his form and made his behaviour erratic. He got entangled in several controversies - missed a team meeting to take a fishing trip, got into a brawl in a Brisbane bar and called the New Zealand international Brendon McCullum ''a lump of shit'' in a live radio interview.

tute Cristiano Ronaldo in the 82nd and Almeida tapped in the rebound. Mozambique was the last of three African teams the Portuguese played in recent weeks before opening Group G World Cup play against Ivory Coast on June 15. Portugal also meets Brazil and North Korea.

Somdev, Bopanna face first round losses AGENCIES HALLE, JUNE 8

India's Somdev Devvarman crashed out of the first round of the 79,260-euro AEGON tennis championship with a 1-6, 46 loss to American Mardy Fish at Queens Club in London Tuesday. At Halle, Rohan Bopanna could not repeat the brilliant show of qualif ying event as he exited from the ATP 250 event in Halle, Germany after suffering a straight-set defeat against Thiemo de Bakker of the Netherlands. The Indian qualifier fought hard but lost 4-6, 6-7 (11) in the first round of the euro 750,000 grass court event -- Gerry Weber Open. Bopanna will now try his luck in the doubles event, where he has teamed up with Pa k i s t a n ' s A i s a m - u l - H a q Qureshi. T h e I n d o - Pa k i s t a n p a i r will open its campaign against Philipp Marx of Germany and Igor Zelenay of Slovakia. Bundesliga tops EPL as world's most profitable REUTERS LONDON, JUNE 8

The Bundesliga overtook the Premiership as the world's most profitable league in 2008/09 despite English soccer enjoying record revenues, according to a report released today. The Annual Review of Football Finance compiled by accountancy firm Deloitte said the sport had proved remarkably resilient to the economic downturn but faced a major challenge in keeping a lid on player wages and transfers. While Premier League clubs saw record revenues of 1,981 million pounds (2.87 billion dollar) in 2008/09, operating profits more than halved from 185 million pounds in 2007/08 to 79 million (114.6 million dollar) a year later. The Bundesliga's operating profits were put at 172 million euros (205.4 million dollar). The 49 million pounds rise in

Premier League revenue was less than half the 132 million increase in wage costs which reached more than 1.3 billion. Gross transfer spending by Premier League clubs also increased from 664 million pounds to a record 713 million. ''The record wages to revenue ratio of 67 percent in the Premier League in 2008/09 is a concern and we expect wages growth to outstrip revenue increases again in 2009/10,'' said Alan Switzer, director in Deloitte's Sports Business Group. ''This will further reduce operating profitability, a decline that cannot continue indefinitely. ''However clubs have the opportunity, via the revenue uplift from the new broadcast deals from 2010/11, to get wage levels down to a more sustainable share of revenue,'' added Switzer.

''It's not the first such opportunity. It remains to be seen whether they grasp it.'' The report said new overseas broadcast deals would result in an additional seven million pounds per season for each Premier League club in 2010/11 and presented another chance for them to improve their financial positions. European soccer's ruling body UEFA last month approved 'Financial Fair Play' rules aimed at forcing clubs to live within their means, with a break-even requirement to be phased in over the next three years. ''The key driver of wages inflation is domestic rather than cross border competition,'' the authors said in a foreword to the report. ''It is potentially within a dozen or so Premier League club cheque signatories' gift to be game changers in a financial sense.

Portugal beat 10-man Cameroon 3-1, but then drew 0-0 with Cape Verde, raising questions about its prowess in front of goal. Ronaldo was left out of the starting lineup. And without his aggressive running and dribbling and with playmaker Deco short of ideas, Portugal couldn't get going forward in the first half. Midway through the first half, the world's third-ranked team began to find its rhythm, though it still couldn't find the net. Simao Sabrosa pounced on a defensive blunder and shot, but Lama stretched to tip the ball wide. Danny then missed on a header at the back post, and soon after Simao sliced a shot from a well-timed cross by Deco. Liedson also missed a good chance, heading weakly when he was unmarked inside the area. Portugal's defense occasionally looked fragile on its right flank, where Miguel was playing in place of Paulo Ferreira. Mozambique is a former Portuguese colony and Portugal's greatest player was the Mozambique-born Eusebio, who starred at the 1966 World Cup in England.

PCB wants Yousuf back UNI LAHORE, JUNE 8

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) wants legendary middle-order batsman Mohammad Yousuf to come out of retirement and file an appeal against the ban imposed on him in order to make himself available for selection in the national squad yet again. Sources in the PCB was quoted as saying by 'The News' that Board chief Ijaz Butt has expressed his willingness for the selection of Yousuf in Pakistan squad, but wants him to leave behind his retirement and file a proper appeal with PCB against the indefinite ban imposed on him. Yousuf was banned for an indefinite period in March along with former skipper Younis Khan over the charges of infighting with the l a t t e r, which the Board feels had adversely affected the team morale and performance.

Stop comparisons between Finn and McGrath: Flower

REUTERS BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND, JUNE 8

England coach Andy Flower has dismissed growing comparisons between the team's new fast bowling sensation Steven Finn and Australia's most successful pace bowler Glenn McGrath. Finn, 21, made his test debut in Bangladesh this year and recently played in both tests against the same opposition, claiming nine wickets at Lord's and then a match-clinching five for 42 on Sunday as England won the second Test inside three days. He was England's man of the series. ''I don't like to make those comparisons,'' Flower said in a telephone interview when asked if Finn was England's answer to McGrath, who was also tall, wiry and renowned for his accuracy and for the ability to extract awkward bounce. McGrath retired in 2007 with 563 test wickets. ''Steven Finn is unique in various ways,'' Flower added. ''He is very much his own man. Comparing him to other fast bowlers, to me, is not useful. But he has a lovely action. ''He has been very impressive.

He's played four test matches now, and it's fair to say he's learning all the time. ''He has very, very good control for a 21-year-old fast bowler. I think that comes from his action, and also a very sound and grounded personality. ''It is a great start for him, but he also realises that he has scope for learning and progress.'' Finn's early progress would suggest that he would be part of the England attack in the Ashes series against Australia, which begins in Brisbane in November. Flower said Finn would now follow in the footsteps of fellow England fast bowler Stuart Broad, and undergo a strengthening programme designed to help his body cope with the rigours of international cricket. It is likely to keep him out of this month's five-match one-day series against Australia, which Flower said was not a tactic to shield the newcomer from Australian batsmen keen to gain a familiarity with his bowling ahead of the Ashes. ''It does not have anything to do with Australia, or the Australian series,'' Flower said.

We owe selection to Sachin: Tiwary’s family UNI JAMSHEDPUR, JUNE 8

A stellar performance in IPL 3 earned Saurabh Tiwary a place in the Asia Cup-bound Indian squad, but the young batsman's family credits the selection to master blaster Sachin Tendulkar. Tiwary, who was a part of the Mumbai Indian team led by Tendulkar which finished runners up in the T20 league, amassed 419 runs to become the eight batsman to achieve such a feat only to draw the attention of the national selectors. During the IPL, Sachin was also seen helping out and giving tips to the young player. The batting maestro even gifted Tiwary one of his bats. The young Jharkhand batsman, who wants to follow the footsteps of India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, was yesterday named in the 15-member national squad for the Asia Cup starting in Sri Lanka next week. Meanwhile, Tiwary, who is in England with the India 'A' team, has admitted to feeling a little dazed by his selection for the

Zimbabwe eye final upset, Lanka seek revenge AGENCIES HARARE, JUNE 8

Giant-killer Zimbabwe will hope to cap their fairytale campaign with yet another stunning display while revenge will be high on Sri Lanka's agenda in the final of the cricket tri-series here on Wednesday. Even though both India and Sri Lanka sent second-string squads for the low-profile tournament, few expected Zimbabwe to emerge as the table-topper with 13 points in their kitty. The minnows twice beat India and both were comprehensive victories. As if to prove it was no fluke, they thumped Sri Lanka in Monday's dead rubber as well to finish their league campaign with three victories from four outings. Key to their fortune has been Brendan Taylor's sensational form that has already earned the opener three Man of the Match awards. In Taylor, Zimbabwe have got a batsman who have the skill and the temperament to see them through. Hamilton Masakadza, Chamu Chibhabha, Tatenda Taibu and Charles Coventry are no dud with the bat either and they would put their best foot forward tomorrow to lift the title they have come so close to. There bowling has been a revelation as well, especially their battery of spin bowlers. The likes of Ray Price, Prosper Utseya and Graeme Cremer have not only been accurate but also aggressive and the spirited support they got from the fielders made them all the more lethal.

The absence of big names from the dominant China and Malaysia, has turned the focus on Indians, who are expected to rule the roost in the US

Dollar 120,000 prize money YonexSunrise India Open World Badminton Grand Prix championship beginning here tomorrow. The Indians, spearheaded by World No.6 Saina Nehwal in the women and Chetan Anand in the men's section would try to make most of the home advantage to prove their mettle on the big stage . With top Chinese shuttler ABC Champion Lin Dan, along with his compatriots and stars from Malaysia giving a skip to the event preferring to play in the three Super Series to follow, Saina and Chetan have been given the pride of place. The tournament would augur well for Indian shuttlers as it would be the ideal preparation for the ensuing Commonwealth Games in October and the Asian Games

ODI squad for the four-nation tournament. Tiwary's father Sunil Tiwary further said it is because of Tendulkar, who gave opportunities to the 20-year-old during the IPL stint, that his son's credentials have come to the fore. ''To get the support of Sachin has proved to be a blessing for Saurabh,'' said Sunil. The left-handed batsman, who scored 1579 runs in 19 first class matches with a batting average of close to 51, has struck two half-centuries in India's Under-

19 tri-series victory against South Africa and Bangladesh in 2008 and was a member of the squad that won the U-19 World Cup in Malaysia in 2008. Tiwary has performed consistently well in the Ranji Trophy before hitting a peak in the 2009-10 season for Jharkhand, scoring three centuries. The IPL in 2010 shot him into limelight, as he proved one of the finds for Mumbai Indians, striking three half-centuries and cementing his place in their middle order.

Sania to quit tennis in two years’ time UNI BIRMINGHAM, JUNE 8

Indian tennis star Sania Mirza has expressed her desire to quit the sport in two years in order to concentrate on her marriage. ''I want to concentrate on my married life and it is not an easy job to stay away from husband soon after marriage. I will quit in two years,'' 'The News' quoted Sania as saying. ''I don't want to disturb my personal life due to tennis,'' she added. Sania yesterday made a winning return to tennis after her marriage to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik as the Hyderabadi lass defeated Taiwan's Yung Jan 6-1, 6-4 in her AEGON Classic first round match here. The 23-yearold, who has been going through a lean patch of her career following injuries, had earlier said that she would continue to play tennis once she recovers fully from the wrist injury that had marred her performance in the recent past. Sania said she also hopes to be fully fit to represent India in the Delhi Commonwealth Games this October and the Asian Games, scheduled to be held this November in China.

Force India rebuff Lotus over technical director REUTERS LONDON, JUNE 8

Force India have told rivals Lotus that they face a long wait before technical head Mark Smith can join the Formula One newcomers. Malaysian-owned Lotus announced last week that they had appointed Smith as technical director, reporting to overall engineering head Mike Gascoyne, once he had served out his Force India notice period. The team added that they had also recruited chief designer Lewis Butler and aerodynamics head Marianne Hinson from Force India.

Force India owner and team principal Vijay Mallya said in a team preview for Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal that Smith would be staying until after the start of next season. ''Our technical team, despite reports, is still very much intact,'' Mallya said. ''Mark will stay with us until April 2011 and we will, in due course, announce a structure that will take us to the next level of performance. I'm very comfort-

able with where we are as a team and where we are going.'' F o r c e India, who previously employed Gascoyne, and Lotus are already embroiled in a legal dispute over development of the latter's 2010 car in an Italian wind tunnel. Mallya said the off-track disputes would not distract Force India, currently sixth of the 12 teams and 41 points behind fifth placed Renault, from their challenge to move up the Formula One

at Guanz Zhou in China in November. Going by the present form and seedings Saina and Chetan, the flagbearers of Indian Badminton, should walk away with the titles. While Sania is wary of Malaysian and Singapore players, Chetan, if things go according to the script, would run into second seeded H H Muhammad of Malaysia in the title clash. Playing in the city for the first time, Saina, who has been practicising hard at the stadium, said she hoped to do well in the tournament and carry it forward to the super series events, to be in shape for the World Championships in November. Saina said she had a tough season and would be taking a break before the world championship. ''I am aiming at performing well in the three super series, the Com-

monwealth Games and the world championships'', she added. Saina said she was satisfied with her performance this season in which she made it to the semi finals of the All England championships, Asian Badminton Confederation (ABC) Open semis and a good showing in the Uber Cup. ''After the Super series events, I will take a break for one or one and a half months to be in good shape for world championships'', Saina said. With four Indians getting past the qualifying rounds, India would have 16 players in the 32-player main draw, which was seen as a good exposure for the rising talents.

Saina would start her campaign against less fancied Thilini Jayasinghe of Sri Lanka in a late evening match scheduled for tomorrow at the refurbished Jawaharlal Nehru Multipurpose Indoor Stadium, which had received a facelift for the mega event and also a fresh coat of paint. If the matches go as per the seedings, Saina would run into her compatriot and sixth seeded Sayali Gokhale in the quarters and fifth seeded Fu Mingtian of Singapore in the semi finals, before having a date with second seeded Mow Choo Wong of Singapore in the finals.

grid. ''We are fully focused on the task in hand, which is to score as many points as we can and to regain that fifth position in the championship,'' he said. ''We're not so far away from Renault and there are plenty of opportunities left to rack points up and some circuits that we should really fly on, including Montreal. ''Any actions we're taking away from the track won't affect the team's focus on sealing our most successful season to date.'' Force India ended last season in ninth place.
