T

he people of Goa have handed out the saffron slip to the Congress. In a decisive verdict, Goans stamped defeat on the faces of many heavyweight candidates and sent home not just the Congress, but humiliated the icons of the family raj -- the Alemaos. The huge anti-Congress wave spread from Canacona with the immediate beneficiary of people’s anger being shifted to the BJP, which looks set to form the next government along with a array of Independents, who turned out to be the giant killers. The biggest among them was Avertano Furtado, who downed the leader of the Alemao clan, patriarch Churchill Alemao, to cap

the complete demolition of the Alemao raj in South Goa, where all the four Alemaos lost, including Yuri, who contested on an NCP ticket The BJP won 19 seats, miles ahead of the Congress’ 9 at the time of going into print . In a huge help to the new government formation, Mickky Pacheco’s Goa Vikas Party pulled off an incredible two seats in Nuvem and from the Alemao backyard of Benaulim, where star daughter Valanka Alemao’s pride was ground to dust. Pacheco, the GVP boss defeated Power Minister Alexio Sequeira, in a star studded contest which saw the exit of the Congress veteran. The number of heavyweights and sitting MLAs falling took even the BJP by surprise. The list is endless -- Jose Philip D Souza, Alexio Sequeira, Churchill Alemao, Joaquim Alemao, Filipe Neri Rodrigues, Shyam Satardekar, Nilkant Haldankar, Agnelo Fernandes, Dayanand Narvekar, Ravi Naik and Pratap Gauns among others Accepting defeat, outgoing Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said, “The people have voted for the BJP. We don’t have the numbers. We accept defeat gracefully and accept people’s verdict”

Pacheco, the GVP boss defeated Power Minister Alexio Sequeira, in a star studded contest which saw the exit of the Congress veteran.

An obviously elated Manohar Parrikar, poised to be the next Chief Minister of the state said, “We will form the government and are confident that three Independents will support us” So strong has been the BJP’s performance that complicated issues like MGP’s and Independents’ support has been laid to rest by sheer people’s power. While Mickky Pacheco’s party has done 200 times better than a national party, the NCP or the Trinamul Congress drew a blank. The Congress stares at a blank. Its entire cabinet has been virtually wiped out, its regional heavyweights sent back and its organization in tatters. It’s a very long road ahead for the Congress.
