The Crime Branch has chargesheeted Benaulim legislator Mickky Pacheco in the casino assault case, but the former tourism minister has said he would come out clean and expressed his full faith in the judiciary.

The Crime Branch filed the chargesheet in the court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Margao charging the member of the legislative assembly for wrongful restraint, assault and issuing threats to staff of the casino at Majorda Beach Resort.

The incident had occurred in May 2009, but came to light in June after a complaint was lodged with the Colva police station. The government later transferred the case to the Crime Branch for a thorough investi-

gation into the episode.

Paper leak report kept a secret Third committee to frame charges HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, JAN 17

Even though the Goa University on Monday decided to chargesheet the persons primafacie found to be involved in the third-year MBBS paper leakage episode at Goa Medical College, it didn’t disclose any names keeping everyone in the dark about those responsible for bringing disrepute to the State’s age-old institution.

A press release issued here by the Officiating Registrar P V Desai stated THE report of the three-member committee appointed by the Board of Evaluation to inquire into the alleged leakage has been accepted and it has been decided to chargesheet the persons in the matter. Accordingly, charges will now be framed by the university, it mentioned.

However, the very brief release in three paragraphs issued by the varsity is not clear on how many persons are behind the infamous leak. The board has now appointed a third committee under provisions of Ordinance OA 5.2.3 to

investigate the charges and submit its report within a month.

A top university official said the varsity was going as per the books and he too wasn’t aware of the names of the person or persons involved. The report, he stated, was highly confidential and it wasn’t right to disclose anything at this juncture.

The official had indicated that as soon as the report would be out, the media would be informed on those involved in leaking the papers. However, the release sent to media offices today didn’t have a single name even though prima facie the culprits have been identified.

Herald had done a major expose on the leakage of the MBBS papers at the beginning of the year. Soon after, the varsity took note and formed its first committee which confirmed the leakage and subsequently formed the second committee which placed its report before the board identifying those responsible.

Surinder Kumar Jakhar, IFFCO chairman and son of former Madhya Pradesh Governor Balram Jakhar, was killed today when his pistol went off accidentally while he was cleaning it at his farmhouse at Abhor in Ferozpur district of Punjab.

Police team in Belgaum to Provide jobs to 630 people, probe constable’s arrest TILLARI PROJECT

Maharashtra has asked Goa government to fulfill its 20-year-old long promise to provide employment to around 630 people from Maharashtra affected with the inter-state Tillari Irrigation Project.

“As per the agreement, it is now the duty of Goa government to provide employment to these 630 people in a time bound manner,” Maharashtra’s Water Resources Minister Sunil Tatkare told reporters today evening.

Tatkare, who is down in Goa to discuss over the issue held a high level meeting with Goa Water Resource Minister Filipe Neri Rodrigues, to work out a time frame programme to provide employment to all these affected people from Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra.

The meeting was also attended by Chief Secretary Sanjay Srivastava.

“If Goa cannot provide the employment, they can work on one time settlement for the people affected with the project,” Tatkare said adding that Maharashtra government has already provided employment to 204 people.

Around 20 years back when the project was conceived in 1990, 11 villages with 1,236 families and 5,476 people were affected.

UGDP wants erring cops suspended in Cipriano case HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, JAN 17

Demanding suspension of the policemen involved in Cipriano custodial death case within a week’s time, the United Goans Democratic Party has threatened to bring the people of Goa on the streets if the erring policemen are not suspended immediately pending an inquiry.

Party secretary general Adv Anacleto Viegas also questioned the propriety of the government in instituting a police probe into the episode when custodial deaths are to be inquired by the magistrates. “The UGDP is demanding the immediate suspension of the policemen who accompanied Cipriano in the jeep.

There cannot be any justification for the police to bring Cipriano when the complaint was non-cognisable”, Adv Viegas said.

He demanded that the government scrap the probe ordered into the death case.

Tatkare said that 869 families were certified to be Project Affected People (PAP) and as per the agreement Goa need to provide employment to the rest.

The minister clarified that according to the agreement signed between both the States had discussed that Goa will have 73 percent water from the dam project which is at the brink of completion.

“Goa was supposed to have 73 percent cost sharing and liability like providing employment to the PAP as per 1976 Rehabilitation Act of Maharashtra,” Tatkare recalled.

He said that few PAP families had threatened to commit suicides if government employment, as promised to them during their evacuation, is not provided to them on immediate basis.

Talking about the rehabilitation process

adopted by Maharashtra, the minister said that one person per family is provided with the employment and in those cases where giving government jobs was not possible, the government has worked out a one time settlement compensation package for them.

“The similar proposal has also been put forward before the Goa government. Rodrigues has assured to discuss the issue with the Chief Minister Digambar Kamat before taking the decision,” Tatkare said, adding that if required the department will also urge Maharashtra chief minister to follow up the issue with Goa Government.

The project with 16 TMC dam is estimated to be of Rs 1612 crore of which Rs 857crore has to be borne by Goa government. Rs 658 crore is the total cost in the form of common expenditure that both the States will bore. The share of Goa comprises of Rs 482 crore of which the State has already paid Rs 447 crore to Maharashtra.

“The payment of pending amount has also been discussed in the meeting,” the minister said.

During the meeting today, Maharashtra also asked Goa to have a storage capacity built up alongside the irrigation project.

Tatkare said that such a facility is required in case of natural calamities or maintenance of canal during which the water supply can be given from this storage reservoir.

Inching towards inking an agreement with Fomento for the treatment of waste at Sonsodo, the Margao Municipal Council will hold a power point presentation for the city fathers as well as the High Powered Committed headed by Chief Minister Digambar Kamat at the district Collectorate, South on Tuesday evening.

This is the first time that the city fathers and the Kamat-led high powered committee will have a joint interaction at the power point presentation on Fomento’s proposal for Sonsodo and the Civic body’s status visà-vis the company’s presence at Sonsodo.

MMC Chief Officer Prasanna Achar ya informed that the power point presentation will be basically held for the benefit of the Councillors and members of the high powered committee and allay their apprehensions

In an interesting development, some of the Margao Municipal Councillors have claimed that they have been requested by the powers that be not to raise many queries at tomorrow’s power point presentation to avoid embarrassment to the Chief Minister Digambar Kamat.

City Fathers in the know said an outspoken ruling Councillor was told not to raise too many queries on the project and the draft concession agreement to be signed with Fomento since the Chief Minister will be attending the power point presentation along with other members of the high powered Committee.

Councillors in private demanded to know why the power point presentation is being held by the Chief Officer in the presence of the Chief Minister, adding that requests made to the Councillors not to raise too many queries is an attempt to silence the voice of the City Fathers.

“This agreement would guide the civic body’s relationship with Fomento for the next 25 years. Certainly, we would like to get all our queries answered before the deal is signed with the company”, remarked a councillor. on various aspects of the proposed deal with Fomento. “The Civic body want to be transparent in all its dealings with Fomento. That’s the reason, the power point presentation will held on Tuesday to explain the various aspects of the agreement to the City Fathers”, he added.

Acharya pointed out that the MMC Chairperson would convene a special meeting of the Council to ratify the agreement soon after the power point presentation.

Replying to a question on

the contention issue of payments by the civic body, Acharya said he has an answer to the query if raised by the city fathers. “There’s nothing new in the draft agreement on the question of payments. It is for the Council to decide whether to make one time payment or pay the amount for the next 25 years”, he said.

The presence of the high powered committee members at the meeting assumes significance as many a city father had planned to raise various issues involving the agreement.

Injured child kept in wait for want of ophthalmologist HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, JAN 17

Hospicio was once again in the news on Monday when a male ophthalmologist was conspicuous by his absence for an hourand-half when an child was brought to the hospital with eye injuries.

The incident occurred around noon when a one-and-half year old child from Maina Curtorim was rushed to the hospital with a deep cut on the eyelid. The boy was examined in the Hospital casualty, but could not be treated immediately for want of the male ophthalmologist.

Frantic calls by the telephone operator as well as by the PRO failed to evoke any response from the ophthalmologist and the child was made to wait for more than an hour and half till he was attended by a female ophthalmologist.

A Hospicio doctor said the casualty could not attend to the victim since he had sustained injuries to the eye.

Hospital sources in the know said that this is not the first time that doctors were found conspicuous by their absence during emergency situations. “The Health Services should order a probe into the episode and also ascertain the doctors who are found missing while on duty”, demanded the source.

HERALD CORRESPONDENT BELGAUM, JAN 17

The Goa Police team reached Belgaum on Monday to investigate about the arrest of police constable Arun Desai, attached with Margao Police station.

It may be recalled that on January 11, Belgaum Police had arrested Desai along with four others with 2.6 kg of Hashish that was brought to Belgaum in a Maruti van owned by Desai.

DySP Mahesh Gaonkar, PI John Fernandes and Constable Viraj Rane, who reached Belgaum early Monday morning, met Belgaum SP Sandeep Patil and Additional SP S H Gangareddy.

Later, after seeking the permission from the Court, they visited the accused in the Hindalga Central Jail here, where they interrogated Arun Desai.

“I am here only to confirm whether Desai was arrested by Belgaum Police at Belgaum. We only recorded his statement about how he reached Belgaum on Tuesday, as neither he was on leave nor had he informed his superiors about his absence.

Thus, he has made the violation of conduct rules,” DySP Gaonkar told Herald.

New Vaddem woman knocked to death HERALD REPORTER VASCO, JAN 17

An elderly woman from New Vaddem died, after she was knocked down by a jeep along the NH-17B near Coast Guard Colony, Mangor-Hill, Vasco, on Monday evening.

According to Vasco Police, one Sitabai Ramkrishna Padwalkar was knocked down by Balero jeep (GA-05-T-1012) while she was crossing the road.

According to passengers in the jeep and driver Nilesh Shirodkar, the deceased got confused while crossing the road and suddenly came in the way of the jeep. Padwalkar was rushed to Chicalim Cottage Hospital, where she succumbed to injuries, informed Vasco Police.

It is learnt that Belgaum Police team will also visit Margao on Tuesday to make further investigations.

CCP ELECTIONS UTAA demands ordinance reserving 12% seats for STs HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, JAN 17

The United Tribals Associations Alliance (UTAA) has demanded that the government come out with an ordinance to facilitate 12 per cent reservation for Schedule Tribes (STs) community in the forthcoming Corporation of the City of Panjim (CCP) election.

The delegation of UTTA called on the Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, Urban Development Minister Joaquim Alemao, Education Minister Babush Monserrate as also State Election Commissioner (SEC) Dr M Modassir to press their demand to amend Section 10 of the CCP Act 2002, through ordinance.

The UTTA claimed that the survey conducted by the Other Backward Commission (OBC) in 2004, has found that ST population in the State of Goa is 12 per cent.

The government has had 12 per cent reservation for STs in panchayat, ZP and municipal elections in the past.

They also claimed that even the Central Government has accepted this. The STs enjoy 12 per cent reservation in the Central Government jobs in the State.

“On this basis we demand that 12 per cent wards be reserved for ST in CCP election,” says the memorandum submitted to the SEC by them today.

No seats were reserved for

ST community in 2005 CCP election on the grounds that ST population falling within the jurisdiction of CCP was less than 2 per cent.

The delegation which met the government today consist of Poinguinim MLA Ramesh Tawadkar, UTAA’s Joint Convenor Govind Gawade, Working President Namdev Fatarpekar, Central Committee members Soiru Velip and Vishwas Gawade.

“The chief minister and the urban development minister have assured the delegation that although there is no provision in the CCP Act, the government will try to have reservation for STs in CCP election,” claimed UTTA delegation.

The ordinary meeting of the Corporation of the City of Panjim (CCP) held today which is probably a last one before the term of the Corporation ends on March 20, turned out to be quite stormy with Opposition corporators attacking the ruling members for issuing tenders worth Rs 2 crore without having funds in its kitty.

Opposition members led by Surendra Furtado as well as Adv Avinash Bhonsle also caught Mayor Carolina Po on the wrong foot for not producing confirmed minutes of the standing committee meetings.

Other Opposition members Rupesh Haldankar and Vaidhyahi Naik also joined in as Mayor told that minutes of the standing committee were not confirmed due to fault of the Superintendent Octaviano Dias.

Irked opposition members however told the Mayor not to

make Dias a scapegoat when it is all her fault. “Don’t blame Dias when you are supposed to get minutes confirmed, Furtado said.

He also questioned how the standing committee could have conducted meetings when minutes of earlier meetings were not confirmed.

Indian scientists have found that a part of India that was detached from the mainland, million of years, now lies submerged in the southern Indian Ocean near Antarctica.

A continent that has been submerged below the sea, located 1000 kms away from Eastern Antarctica was the part of India which tore itself away from the eastern region of the country.

The study which attains significance, is done by scientists from National Institute of Oceanography and Ahmedabad-based Space Application Centre (SAC) and has been carried by science journals. The scientists have proved that the continent was sundered and sunk by ancient geographical process. The scientists from the US, India and Australia have joined the hands to reconstruct the entire history of how this continent detached from India.

The sunken part of Earth was detached from the Eastern coast between Orissa and Andhra Pradesh, scientists said.

NIO researcher K Sree Krishna, one amongst the researchers who have worked on this path breaking project said that the continent is 140,000 sq kms area and is 1,200 metres below the sea. The study narrates about the tectonic history of break up of India from Antarctica 130 million years ago and the excision of Elan Bank from Eastern India, 120 million years ago.

The clues about possibility of India’s lost land had emerged around 9 years ago. The research by NIO and SAC scientists has described how India first separated from Gondwanaland and then lost Elan Bank. India separated from Gondwanaland about 130 million years ago and drifted northward to eventually collide with Asia some 40 million years ago.

Accused Bashir Shaikh has alleged that he has been framed in the Moti Dongor attack case by his opponents since he did not support the candidature of Iqbal in the municipal polls.

“I was not at all involved in the attack. I have been framed because I and my supporters did not support Iqbal in the Municipal poll. This is purely politics”, he said, and blamed his opponents behind the case against him.

Bashir, however, said that he has full faith in the judiciary and would come out clean.

But, when newsmen sought to know why he had gone in hiding since the attack if he was innocent, Bashir shot back saying he had gone out of station as his relative was taken ill to the hospital. others.

Bashir – who is a known supporter of the Chief Minister in Moti Dongor area of the constituency – was wanted by the Margao police in connection with the deadly attack by the accused on Maqbool and other victims, including women and children.

Though the police had managed to arrest four persons, in-

cluding a minor boy, Bashir and the other three accused Rabani Tambak, Rafiq Bawar and Rafiq Tambak had gone into hiding after the attack.

The surrender of the accused was expected any moment after the South Goa Sessions Court granted bail to the three accused persons arrested earlier.

When contacted, Margao PI Santosh Desai said that the foursome have been booked for the offence of attempt to murder, besides other sections of the IPC. He said the police were on the look out for the accused since the attack on December 28 which caused a blood bath atop the hillock, but in vain.

Incidentally, Bashir’s surrender came after the victim Maqbool called on the Margao police inspector and expressed his unhappiness over the inordinate delay in arresting Bashir and the other accused persons.

After the meeting with PI Dessai, Maqbool told newsmen that it’s nearly 20 days since Bashir and his gang assaulted him and many others on Moti Dongor, but the police are dragging their feet to arrest the accused.

Maqbool said if the police cannot arrest the accused persons, then the victims of the attacks are ready to nab the accused. “Bashir has been found moving around the city, but the police still appeared clueless.

Unless the police should arrest him, or we are ready to nab the accused persons”, Maqbool added.

5-year-old boy’s death due to negligence: cops HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, JAN 17

The case of accidental death wherein a five-year-old boy died after he was trapped in a heap of mud at a construction site on January 11 has been converted into negligence case against two of its contractors.

Panjim police today registered a case of negligence against T Bhimrao Channappa Naik of Chimbel and T Natrajan of Porvorim.

Hanumant Apa, native of Karnataka was critically injured after a heap of mud at a construction site near St Inez cemetery caved in while he was playing with other toddlers on January 11.

Sources said that the accused are summoned for questioning.

According to eye-witnesses, rescuing him took nearly 20 minutes while others escaped unhurt. He was immediately rushed to ICU at a private hospital where he was battling for his life but succumbed after his lungs collapsed at around 8:30am on Sunday.

The child’s body was taken to Goa Medical College where a post-mortem was conducted and after preserving the viscera to carry out necessary tests, the body was handed over to his parents for final rites.

Youth stabbed at Bastora

PORVORIM, JAN 17 (HC) --A 24-year-old youth from Bastora was seriously injured, after he was stabbed by two persons at Bastora late Sunday night.

According to Mapusa Police, the incident occurred when Santosh Talwar along with his two friends were returning home on their motorcycle at about 10 pm after visiting the Bodgeshwar Temple at Mapusa. Police further informed that the two accused stopped Talwar at Bastora and started assaulting him. Later, the accused stabbed Talwar in his abdomen, due to which Talwar started bleeding profusely. The accused also damaged Talwar’s motorcycle and fled from the site. The victim was rushed to Asilo Hospital at Mapusa, from where he was shifted to GMC Hospital at Bambolim for medical treatment. Police Sub Inspector Vijay Rane has registered an offence against both the accused, who are absconding.

Calling upon Goans to wage a continuous battle to protect the state from going Mumbai way, Social activist Matanhy Saldanha urged the government to adopt a resolution in the Goa Legislative Assembly to ban sale of agriculture land to non-agriculturists.

Speaking at a function held to release a book “Listen – Goa is crying” authored by Martin Meninon Fernandes, Saldanha said reminded that f re e d o m i s a c o n t i n u o u s process and Goans should brace up to protect the liberation from the Portuguese regime.

“We don’t want development and go the Mumbai way.

The agricultural land should b e p ro t e c t e d f ro m b e i n g bought by outsiders”, Saldanha said.

Tension flared up at CavremQuepem when an activist from Velipwada-Cavrem was injured after being knocked down by a speeding mining truck in the village on Friday evening.

Angry villagers blocked mining trucks by squatting on the road to protest against the rash movement of mining traffic in the village.

According to reports, the accident occurred at about 3.30 pm when Chandrakant Velip was proceeding towards his residence on his scooter (GA-02-H5241).

At Kirlagaly, the driver of a truck (GA-09-U-1724) lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a turn and collided with the scooter.

Velip was flung into some roadside bushes and sustained injuries, while his scooter was damaged in the mishap. He was rushed to Primary Health Center Curchorem, from where he was shifted to Hospicio in Margao.

Pedestrian killed in Porvorim mishap HERALD CORRESPONDENT PORVORIM, JAN 17

A 72-year-old pedestrian died, after he was knocked down by a taxi near Sai Service, Porvorim, on Monday at about 1.30 pm.

According to Porvorim Police, Raghoba Nagvekar, who was crossing the road near Sai Service, was knocked down by a Maruti taxi (GA-03-4835), which was proceeding from Calangute towards Margao.

The people around called for ambulance 108 and simultaneously informed the police.

Nagvekar was declared dead on admission at GMC Hospital.

Porvorim Police have registered an offence against the taxi driver under Sections 279, 304 A of Indian Penal Code.

SIT to probe lady informers in drugs case too HERALD REPORTER PaNJIM, JaN 17

The newly formed Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing into the spy-cam video allegedly showing police sub-inspector Sunil gudlar negotiating with two foreign women over the sale of drugs, will probe the lady whistle-blowers as well.

Police sources said that Israeli ayala Driham and Kazak national Zarina will be probed as they conducted a sting operating on the former anti Narcotics Cell PSI gudlar selling them charas.

The tapes were handed over to the Home Minister Ravi Naik after which a local news channel released it in parts. The alleged drug lord’s sister ayala and his girlfriend Zarina, claim to have carried out the sting on gudlar in association with an Israeli media agency.

“The role of ayala and Zarina in the entire sting operation would be investigated. We will summon them to know whether they knew about the drugs trade in goa,” said a senior SIT official.

Days after the sting operation, Herald released couple of photographs showing David Driham alias Dudu in a party at his house at anjuna, incidentally days before his arrest in February 2010.

The photographs have created flutters with goa police requesting to hand over the pictures for investigation.

Police spokesperson Superintendent of Police atmaram Deshpande on Sunday told Herald said SIT will also probe into the conduct of ayala and Zarina.

“SIT is conducting holistic inquiry into the matter. Media should cooperate and hand over the documents and pictures regarding the drugs case to help in police investigation. The photographs showing them in a party also need to be investigated,” he said.

Govt breaking the ‘aam admi’s’ back

N

o sooner had we got over the gut-wrenching blow of onions going up to Rs90 per kilogram, blowing the ‘aam admi’s’ household budget to bits, when we suffered the unkindest cut of them all – a substantial increase in the price of petrol, for the second time in less than a month. Since the beginning of December 2010, the price of the fuel that common Goans rely on to power their two-wheelers has increased by nearly 10 per cent.

That this comes at a time when wholesale price index inflation had shot up to well over 8 per cent and – more relevant and realistic – that food inflation is hovering over the 20 per cent mark, seems to have been all but lost on the central government. Ruling in the name of the ‘aam admi’ ought to mean more than merely taking his name in vain.

Union Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has disowned the recent petrol price hike. She says her party – the single largest constituent of the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the centre after the Congress – was neither consulted nor informed about the decision. The government has chosen not to react to her outburst, but at most it would say that decisions on petrol prices are taken by the oil marketing companies, not by the government.

But if that is the case, then why have diesel and cooking gas prices not been hiked simultaneously? Obviously, this was a considered, debated, political decision. The government has just shown its indifference to the ‘aam admi’ by piling petrol-price-hike misery on onion-price-hike hurt.

If there was really no option before the government, one could understand its position. But this is not really the case. Taxes on petrol in India aggregate nearly half its price.

It was perfectly possible for the government to temporarily reduce taxes and spare the ‘aam admi’ a double whammy of rocketing prices of both food and fuels. It has chosen not to do so.

The price of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), used for passenger aircraft, was simultaneously increased along with petrol prices. But these went up by Rs0.95 per litre, or about 2 per cent. Petrol went up by more than twice as much. Both aviation fuel and petrol comes from crude oil, which we are told now costs around $92 per barrel (Rs28 per litre).

But aviation fuel costs Rs49 per litre. Then why are twowheeler drivers paying over Rs60 per litre for petrol? It’s simple – they pay more taxes on fuel than those who fly by air!

Is that the commitment of the UPA government to the ‘aam admi’?

The central government has shown that it is unable to exercise any check over inflation. All the promises it has made over the years in this regard have been broken, just as its last promise on onions has fallen flat. Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar promised to bring down onion prices in three weeks. It is now over a month, and despite Chinese and Pakistani onions flooding our markets, prices still rule at a distressingly high Rs30 per kilogram.

This wanton petrol price hike is the last straw. It must be rolled back promptly, as the sufferers are the common masses of salaried people and professionals in field jobs.

Otherwise, the government will lose all credibility in the eyes of the very ‘aam admi’ in whose name it rules. The Congress needs to remember that it was the prices of onions that once lost the opposition BJP its iron grip over the Delhi government, which the latter has never since been able to regain. Does the Congress want a reversal of that scenario nationwide?

Exorbitant price of eggs Adelmo Fernandes, Vasco Prices of food items have been skyrocketing at an alarming rate. Many are beyond the reach of the poor. One such item is the poultry product. The price of eggs has been spiralling upwards and has reached an exorbitant price of Rs45 per dozen. This works out to a staggering Rs3.75 per egg. At this rate, eggs could very well disappear from the dining table. Goa is not self-sufficient in the production of poultry products and depends on the neighbouring state of Maharashtra, for supply. The state government should augment production of poultry products in the state, so that the price of eggs stabilises.

The fatal crisis suffocating Indian humanity right now is higher-than-ever inflation. Never has people’s survival been in such peril and so poignant, as it is today. Why should the prime minister of a great country be so utterly committed to the U.S.? Let us recall the country’s first prime minister telling an earlier U.S. president that India was no international mendicant. This nuclear deal submission is unbecoming and unfortunate: it is a bizarre secret. And to think that it comes from Dr Manmohan Singh – an otherwise clean, fine, humane statesman. My patriotic plea is straight: do jettison this surrender to the Yankee.

Turning point John Eric Gomes, Porvorim The Ministry of Environment and Forests has reportedly issued orders for demolition of the Adarsh structure within 3 months. The usual tactic by government is, to issue illegal permissions, and if that is challenged/does not work, regularise the fait accompli! The Congress is already on the back foot, dealing with massive corruption as scam after scam surfaces. This will be testing times, since it clearly involves top brass of defence and political luminaries.

The Adarsh scam could be the turning point in our fight against rampant corruption if complete demolition is accomplished. This is a big order for a large change in India’s aam admi’s fight against corruption.

6 months at a tremendous loss and it has mothballed for the last dozen years. In its latest ‘avatar’, of The Ratnagiri Gas and Power Ltd., it is like the proverbial bride all dressed-up and waiting for a wedding to come along. The new project proponents NTPC and GAIL have abandoned half the installation; viz., regasification plant, cryogenic LNG storage/reticulation, deep-water anchorage for LNG tankers and the service wharf.

NTPC and GAIL are looking at commissioning and then operating only the power plant, but they need the fuel since they are no longer equipped/capable of receiving the original LNG fuel from Qatar. So now, they are building a pipeline from Gujarat to the power-plant in Ratnagiri’s Guhagar taluka to convey natural gas to fuel their power plant. The real cost of this entire fiasco to the people of this country, will not be less than Rs30,000 crore. This is assuming that the power plant will generate power in the next year or so. The abandoned half of the project will be a financial windfall for some of India’s top scrap dealers.

Today, the two shameless Sardars Manmohan and Montek are busy digging, a much bigger hole for us in Ratnagiri. It is called the Jaitapur nuclear power park. It will have 6 reactors/units with a combined capacity of 9,900 MW against Enron’s 2,100 MW. Enron’s estimated cost was Rs9,065 crores. Jaitapur is estimated to cost Rs120,000 crore. Enron used up 1,200 acres of land, Jaitapur

needs 2,500 acres. So if Enron power costs Rs8 per unit, what will Jaitapur power cost?

Today, India has an installed capacity of 180,000 MW. One-third of the energy generated in this country is lost due to transmission, distribution and transformation limitations along with some theft – with or without collusion of the authorities and their political patrons. Which means that 60,000 MW of installed capacity, is being rendered unproductive.

At least half of this 60,000 MW can be salvaged by improving transmission, distribution, transformation and security by spending Rs one crore per MW. In other words, if the National Power Transmission Corporation and Power Grid Corporation spend Rs30,000 crores over the next 5 years, India’s power availability will go up by 30,000 MW without having to build any power generation plants.

Instead, we are going to spend Rs120,000 crores over the next 20 years to build a nuclear power facility that will generate a mere 9,900 MW while gobbling up ten square kilometres of land. Not to mention all the safety, radiation and environmental concerns of millions of people, which are being ignored by our Sardar comedians, Manmohan Singh and Montek Singh Ahluwalia.

Maybe we should call them Santa Singh and Banta Singh, like the guys in the erstwhile Sardarji jokes.

As Vladimir Ilyich Lenin would’ve said, ‘Jairam Ramesh is so busy counting the trees, he has missed the forest!’

Now I would like to end on a very serious note, by once again quoting V R Krishna Iyer: “To wipe very tear from every eye, is our tryst with destiny of the current generation – cricket scores, beauty contests and reality shows are not the priorities. The rule of law shall sustain the rule of life. A wall of separation, an Iron Curtain between politicians in power and people in privation, is the cruel social malignancy.”

Dear prime minister: you are clean, green, simple and straight. Do save and not drown, the billion-plus lives whose trustee you, parliament and the judiciary are. We must and we can win our long march to victory, given the will. Therefore, every party and every social, religious and regional organisation, shall struggle patriotically to tear to pieces the political – communal – economic Iron Curtain that is divisive.

Today, the cost of money has raised the cost of the project to Rs20,000 crore and still counting.

Should have done this much earlier, but me and my middle-class thrift. Yet can one ignore the wide gulf between pre and post-open market salaries.

Every generation has its list of what was available, in their time.

What one anna was to one generation, became one rupee in the next, and will become Rs 10 or more, in the next. But everyone is sure that theirs were the best years. It’s a clear sign of ageing.

But it is funny. Nariman Point is buzzing, four or five times busier than when we were, in our salad days. It’s teeming with offices as is Cuffe Parade both replacing the Ballard Estate of old.

It’s the laptop generation and young executives, women in suits, as they scamper as if though there is no tomorrow. Returning home it is at half pace and weary. Poor things, wonder what their burn-out age will be? Lambs to life’s slaughter.

But were we not in the same boat? Now reaping the rewards ha ! ha !and jumping over puddles again. The biggest killjoy is the little things that have to be done on the home front. The process of domestication has been slow, but sure. The kitchen has become a regular haunt.

“the work never gets over.” When the milk is boiling, either the telephone or the door bell rings. Then it is the task of getting the groceries and odd jobs on the morning walk, because the next outing will be in the evening.

It is a question of planning a day’s schedule. The helps, their timings, food and the nitty-gritty. The most trying aspect is the helps, because with automation, they are a dying tribe and therefore, demand is greater than supply, so you can’t be too harsh on them, or they’ll quit for another job. Besides, they have their demands like TV and cable, and why not?

They too are human, and want upward mobility. Possessing a psychological background is necessary, which will help in dealing with them. It therefore helps in striking a balance between strictness and lenience.

And speaking about balance, we have to do the same as far as physical and mental wear out is concerned. Stress must be avoided.

To avoid forgetfulness, resort to the “things to do today” list. It calls for new solutions to old problems, and special managerial skills. So, we already have psychology, psychiatry and management.

In good time, one might well be sitting for an MBA!

Khap panchayats in Taliban’s boots

It is no secret that the Khap panchayats (caste councils) in some districts of North Indian states have wrecked havoc by recklessly trying to impose their will on the people. There were several instances in the past, wherein they had barred some caste marriages and justified honour killings, when young people opposed their diktat. They had also prevented unmarried girls from using mobile phones, and barred girls from wearing jeans.

Needless to say, this is the height of fanaticism. The government has neither conviction nor the grit to put an end to this parallel governance, by disgruntled men.

It seems to be more interested in stabilising its caste based political equations. This is a dangerous trend. These extremist elements are steadily stepping into the boots of Taliban. One shouldn’t be surprised if they next pass a draconian decree. There is an urgent need to clip their wings.

I had stated that Sibal was trying to trivialise the 2G scam and that there was nothing like it, when a whole session of Parliament had been lost on the same matter. Was it not his duty as a Telecom minister, if he was so convinced that there was no 2G scam, to explain to the Opposition, convince them and get Parliament back on the rails? In public relations, the first lesson is to contest the amount and then reduce it as much as possible. This is the further

strategy of the Congress and UPA to take out the 2G scam off the common man’s radar. What I wrote was that whatever the amount of the 2G scam, the truth needs to come out. I am against corruption irrespective of party affiliation since the colour of money, in such cases, is black.

Paradise of crime Aires Rodrigues, Ribandar Goa once known as the paradise of the

east, has in recent years, been in the news for all the wrong reasons. As a laboratory for political experiments, Goa has taken centre stage in circumventing the anti-defection law. With an alarming rise in crime, the streets are no longer safe particularly after sunset. Murders and rapes continue unabated. The drug trade only remains to be legalised.

Goa is half the size of a district in other states and yet we have 12 ministers and 40 MLAs whose upkeep has been eating up the state exchequer. If Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh are really serious of waging a war against corruption, Goa would be the ideal launch pad for a crusade against the malaise that has left the Aam Admi stranded.

Paths of Wisdom Evolution

By Sri Aurobindo The process of existence emerging out of the Inconscient is referred as evolution. Initially, it emerges gradually in the stages of matter, life, and mind.

First matter evolves from simple to complex forms, then life emerges in matter and evolves from simple to complex forms, finally mind emerges in life and evolves from rudimentary to higher forms of thought and reason.

As each new principle emerges, the previous stages remain but are integrated into the higher principle. Humanity represents the stage of development of mind in complex material forms of life.

The higher development of mind in the mass of humanity is not yet a secure possession. Reason and intellect still do not dominate the life of most human beings; rather, mind tends to be turned to the purposes of the life principle, which is focused on self-preservation, self-assertion, and satisfaction of personal need and desire.

But evolution does not cease with the establishment of reason and intellect; beyond mind are higher levels of a spiritual consciousness which, in the nature of things, must also emerge.

This higher evolution is described as a dual movement; inward, away from the surface consciousness and into the depths, culminating in the realisation of the Psychic Being (the personal evolving soul); and then upward to higher levels of spiritual mind Higher Mind, Illumined Mind, Intuitive Mind, and Overmind), culminating to the final stage.

Whereas these higher levels of consciousness have been attained in particular individuals, they must eventually emerge more universally, as general stages in evolution. When they do emerge, there will come the embodiment of a new species on earth, that will be once again united in consciousness with Sachchidananda.

An African mediator was expected in Ivory Coast as supporters of internationally recognised president, Alassane Ouattara, called for a fresh general strike to force incumbent Laurent Gbagbo to stand down.

The African Union's mediator, Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, was in Abuja, holding talks with the head of the ECOWAS regional bloc, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, on how to end the crisis.

Odinga was expected to return to Ivory Coast's commercial capital Abidjan on Monday or Tuesday, with ECOWAS having brandished the threat of military action to force Gbagbo to stand down.

The RHDP, a coalition of pro-Ouattara parties, called in a statement on Sunday for all citizens in the crisis-stricken nation to stop work from Tuesday until embattled strongman Gbagbo moves out.

It called on "public and private sector workers, transport workers, shopkeepers, artisans, workers, farmers" to observe the strike, amid floundering international efforts to mediate an end to the crisis.

The Brazilian military has sent troops and helicopters to rescue stranded survivors of floods and landslides that killed more than 625 people but the operation was stymied by more bad weather.

After rains resumed in the afternoon, the air force had to call back helicopters that had been sent as a lifeline to 80 people stranded since Wednesday in the village of Brejal, in the mountains near Rio de Janeiro, a spokesman said.

"The weather conditions do not permit us to advance in the rural areas and to help people who are isolated," said Rio firefighter Colonel Pedro Machado.

"We can only make short flights.

The teams on the ground are also having a lot of difficulty."

The military had hoped to evacuate people in hamlets cut off by rivers of water and mud that carved massive destruction in the Serrana region just north of Rio de Janeiro.

Bodies buried under rubble and sludge would have to wait until teams with heavy equipment could get to the communities, something that could take days because roads were destroyed.

Soldiers, civil defence workers, police and rangers were seen gathering in Nova Friburgo, reinforcing teams that so far have pulled 283 bodies from decimated parts of the town.

In extracts from his diaries published in The Guardian, Alastair Campbell writes that a senior official of St James' Palace was sent to warn the Prince of Wales of the threat of being attacked by a member of the public if he walked behind Princess Diana’s coffin alone.

New documents revealed in an Australian court how WikiLeaks’ founder Julian Assange created a program that allowed him to access about 11,000 computers belonging to the giant Canadian telecommunications company, Northern Telecom.

The court documents released to The Australian under an application to the Victorian County Court include a transcript of Assange's 1996 presentencing hearing for 24 computer-related offences, including accessing a server of Northern Telecom.

"In over 100 of the computers, (Mr Assange) had root ac-

cess to those computers, which meant he didn’t need any further password -- he had the key to the door, if you like,” the Herald Sun quoted the prosecutor as saying.

“He could have gone anywhere that he liked and he was in those systems for quite some months before the systems' administrators detected his presence,” he added.

Pacheco said if the CM wants to send the right signal to the people of Goa, he should, first thing, drop Naik from the Home Ministry.

CM to support inclusion of Tributes paid to Dr Sequeira Dhangar community in ST HERALD NEWS DESK PANJIM, JAN 17

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat assured that he will make efforts for inclusion of Dhangar community in Scheduled Tribe category and said that he plans to meet Union Home Minister P Chidambaran in this regard, when he meets him in Delhi next week.

Kamat was speaking at a Dhangar Melava organised by the Gomantak Dhangar Samajonnati Mandal, Sanguem at Mollem.

Kamat also assured that funds earmarked for the welfare of Dhangar Samaj will be utilised

SANGUEM (HC): The annual day of Somnath Sports and Cultural Club, Costi-Kalay, was recently celebrated in the premises of Shri Krishna Rakhandev Devasthan, Costi-Sanguem.

To mark the celebration, an All Goa Solo Dance competition was organized, where Paritoshik Sarvangi Dessai won the first prize. The second and third prizes were won by Anisha Pillarnkar and Pratika Marathe respectively.

Sanchika Shirodkar, Ashwit Pilarnkar and Shrusti Nerulkar were all awarded consolation prizes.

On the occasion, the Club felicitated a local senior official of Chowgule Group and Companies Pandarinath Naik for having bagged the prestigious ‘Outstanding Officer’ award at the All Goa Level among all officers working for the company.

Senior manager of Chowgule Group of Companies, Costi, Gangaram Nasnodkar was the chief guest for the prize distribution function, which was organised under the presidentship of Panch Vinod Gaonkar and attended by Vassant Naik, Damodar Kanekar, Suhas Naik and Pandarinath L Naik.

The session was presided over by Pednem BDO Tushar Halarnkar, who delivered a talk on ‘Domestic Violence’ and also informed the audience on various social schemes.

The program was conducted by Maya S Nagvenkar while the Siolim MLA Dayanand Mandrekar was the chief guest.

PORVORIM (HC): The Mapusa unit of Shiv Sena distributed fruits to inmates of the aged home ‘Provedoria’ at Mapusa and Mahila Ashram at Anjuna on the occasion of Meenatai Thakeray’s Jayanti.

The Mahila Agadi contributed in the effort to gain back respect, preference and jobs for sons and daughters of the soil,” stated the press note. D’Souza further stated that in Goa, there are thousands of women in distress but having no effective voice to fight for them. “The Shiv Sena invites these helpless women to join the Shiv Sena, the party that has been time tested to fight for justice and give back basic and fundamental rights to the sons and daughters of the soil,” states the press note.

A 38-year-old resident of MarnaSiolim was injured, after he was brutally assaulted by four persons at Marna on Sunday at about 8.30 pm.

According to Anjuna Police, the four accused allegedly attacked one Salvador Luis Simon with wooden sticks, fist blows and kicks.

Police said the four persons, including a resident of SodiemSiolim, restrained Salvador at Marna and started hitting him with wooden sticks. Salvador, who sustained grievous injuries, was rushed to GMC Hospital at Bambolim, where is recuperating.

Police said no arrests have been made so far and Head Constable Dessai is investigating the case.

Bhagawan Mahavir’s statue unveiled HERALD CORRESPONDENT COLLEM, JAN 17

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat on Sunday unveiled the statue of Bhagawan Mahavir at Bhagawan Mahavir National Park.

The additional principal chief conservator of forest and chief of wild life warden of State jointly organized the prize distribution and concluding programme of wild life week celebrations 2010 at Mollem.

Kamat unveiled the statue in the presence of Forest Minister Filipe Neri Rodrigues, industrialist Arjun Salgaonkar, ZP member Rashmi Lambor, Special Secretary of Forest Balkrishnan and others.

Kamat said the statue which was installed at Mahavir Wild Life Sanctuary was desecrated by some miscreants in 2008, but the Jain Community of the State maintained peace and remained true to the teaching of Lord Bha-

gawan Mahavir.

“Bhagawan Mahavir gave a mantra to the society ‘Live and let live’ and taught them a path of non-violence,” said Kamat.

PANJIM (HND): The Department of Pathology of Goa Medical College in collaboration with the Goa Association of Pathologists is organising a Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme in pathology on January 19 in the pathology department seminar room, GMC college building at 2.30 pm.

The faculty consists of Dr Pushpalata Pai, professor and head of pathology department, Yenepoya Medical College, Mangalore and Dr Hansa Goswami, professor of pathology, B J Medical College, Ahmedabad-Gujarat.

Blessing of chapel

PANJIM (HND): The reconstructed chapel of St Sebastian will be blessed by Parish Priest of Bogmalo Church on January 20 in presence of deputy Speaker Mauvin Godinho at 5 pm, followed by an Eucharistic celebration.

The chapel dedicated to St Sebastian is reconstructed on the ruins of a centuries-old chapel which had crumbled in the first decade of the 19th century due to the devastating plague which engulfed the village killing hundreds and forcing the remaining to flee. After decades of perseverance and faith, parishioners of Chicolna, Bogmalo have been able to reconstruct the chapel.

FC Siolim scored a solitary goal win over Club Sao Minguel de Taleigao to move into the semifinals of all-Goa Romeo memorial football tournament at Santa Cruz village school ground on Monday.

FC Siolim started the match on an aggressive note and were dominant throughout the match. However, the lone goal scored by Siolim in the first half had its share of controversy as another ball was thrown into the playing field just at the time the goal was scored.

Siolim’s Sagam Pednekar and Domnic D’Souza combined well in the midfield with one-touch passes and then Domnic dribbled past a couple of Taleigao defenders and unleashed a powerful right footer which gave no chance to the Taleigao goalie.

Off-spinner R Ashwin and legspinner Piyush Chawla were awarded World Cup caps by the Selection Committee that met in Chennai on Monday but Rohit Sharma missed out in the 15strong squad for the ICC World Cup 2011, which begins from February 19.

The announcement also allayed fears about the injuryscare that hit the Indian camp on the South African tour, with all the four injured players -- Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Praveen Kumar - being named.

The list of players was more or less as expected, with most of them picking themselves.

The only toss-up was for three spots which were bagged by Yusuf, Chawla and Ashwin.

They were fighting against the likes of S Sreesanth, Murali Vijay, Pragyan Ojha and Rohit Sharma.

But Yusuf's all-round abilities tilted the scales in their favour.

Ashwin's proven record in the IPL and Champions League got him the elite berth, while Chawla edged out Rohit Sharma to give the team variety with his leg-spin.

Economy fighting surging inflation: Subbarao PTI MUMBAI, JAN 17

Just a week ahead of the third quarter monetary policy announcement, Reserve Bank Governor Duvvuri Subbarao today said the country is facing surging inflation and monetary policy needs to be calibrated to manage inflation and support growth,clearly hinting that more drastic measures are needed to rein in runaway prices.

The central bank will unveil its third quarter review of monetary policy on January 25, when it is widely expected to spike the key policy rates by at least 25 basis points or 0.25 percentage points.

The Governor had last year upped key policy rates (short term lending and borrowing rates) six consecutive times to 6.25 per cent and 5.25 per cent, respectively, in his bid to normalise monetary policy that was on an expansion mode since the onset of the global financial meltdown that had

begun with the fall of the Wall Street titans late 2007.

"A lot of other countries are still flirting with deflation ... still concerned that they might have deflation.

On the other hand, we are having a surging inflation," the Governor told the students of the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR)on their convocation here today.

Noting that there has been broad-based recovery across the globe, he said, "though we recovered faster from the crisis, inflation also caught up with us sooner than others.

"For the Reserve Bank the challenge is to calibrate monetary policy taking into account the demands of inflation management and the demand of supportive recovery," he said.

Headline inflation, based on wholesale price index, jumped to 8.43 per cent in December on rising food prices after being in a southward-ho for the past three months. As Against this, inflation was 7.48 per cent

While inflation has been on the rise of late, industrial growth too has been faltering.

November factory production numbers at 2.7 per cent was the lowest in the past 18 months. The economy grew 8.9 per cent in the first six months of the fiscal and is widely forecast to log in over 9 per cent at the close of the fiscal on March 31. Last year it managed to grow 7.4 per cent, indicating a faster-than-expected recovery, even as the global economy was still in recession.

This massive dip was driven down by manufacturing, which according to analysts, is the biggest concern now. Chief Statistician TCA Anant told the same event that the government is not happy with the pace of revival in the manufacturing sector and that the cumulative growth of manufacturing during the first eight months is not much beyond 10 per cent.

Another equally serious issue that RBI is caught up with is the acute shortage of liquidity. Since October, banks on an average have been borrowing over a trillion rupees a day from the LAF window of the central bank.

Navin Jindal-led Jindal Power's initial public offering to raise about Rs 7,000 crore may get delayed by a month and is likely to hit the capital market in April this year, a senior official of the company said on Monday.

"Jindal Power IPO may come by end of March or mid-April, we have necessary clearances and the IPO will depend on the market condition, we are waiting for the right moment and the IPO size will be Rs 7,000 crore," Joint Managing director Anand Goel told reporters here.

Hike in petroleum prices was logical: IOC chief PTI MUMBAI, JAN 17

Indian Oil Corporation on Sunday said the decision to hike oil prices was logical, as crude oil prices had skyrocketed in the international market.

"The current increase in the retail price of petrol was necessitated. Based on current price levels in the international oil market, the desired increase in the retail selling prices of petrol in New Delhi market should have been Rs 3.72 per litre," Indian Oil Corporation chairman BM Bansal said in a statement.

IOC has chosen to soften the impact by increasing the price

by Rs 2.50 per litre only and not passing on the balance required increase of Rs 1.22 per litre, Bansal said.

Public sector oil companies yesterday announced a Rs 2.50 per litre hike in the price of petrol. Petrol at Indian Oil filling stations in Delhi will now cost Rs 58.37 per litre, up from Rs 55.87 a litre.

This is the second hike in petrol prices in a month as crude oil prices have skyrocketed to USD 92 a barrel in the international market.

A Statue of Child Jesus with a Beard?

Sculptors are creative souls and often give out messages through their medium of expression. One such creation is an altar in one of the quaint lanes of Fontainhas which has a statue of mother Mary with child Jesus. But, sporting a beard! Herald goes digging…

BY CHANDAN D’ SA HERALD FEATURES uring Christmas week, it is a fun activity to go roaming around watching the hard efforts put in by the youth to make cribs. One such crib was located next to a fascinating altar which displayed a statue of Our Lady of Peity. What caught my attention was that the statue of Jesus which appears as a child had a beard! I grew curious to know what might have brought about such a different statue and what was going on in the mind of the sculptor. In a quest to know more, my colleague and I went about researching the mystery.

A neighbour anonymously quoted “The stones which were lying abandoned were picked up from Old Goa, a World Heritage Site by Fr Luis Jose Vaz who was a Missionary in Macao and Singapore at that time about a 100 years ago”.

He also said that the Litany of the Altar was said very often by the youth at that time from the ward and homemade sweets like ‘ladoos’ etc were distributed to the attendants, but since liquor was served after the neighbouring Litany of Our Lady of Natal, most people preferred attending there, but now they have it once a year or whenever some senior person from the family comes down from Portugal.

On being asked, the chaplain of the neighbouring St Sebastian Chapel was unaware of any such altar in the neighbourhood, but he did give us suggestions on how we can find out more about the altar. He suggested that we could go to the Bishop’s Palace to find more facts about the altar and also meet Percival Noronha who is a prominent person and also a collector of artefacts and might know more about the said altar.

Thinking that we could get some more information on the altar we decided to speak to Fr Caitan Loyala Periera, Secretary to the Arch Bishop. He was very curious on knowing more about this altar and mainly because it was picked up from Old Goa and he added, “As per my knowledge, a church of Our Lady of Peity never existed in Old Goa, but there are chances of it being a part of another church and could have been lying around in the vicinity.” He also told us that they do not keep any record of the altars with them, but he can definitely find out more about the life of Fr Luis Jose Vaz and let us know. He seemed very happy that someone is actually going around finding out information about an altar which is over a century old yet overlooked by a lot of people, including himself. He also told us about how Fr Cosme da Costa found an old Catholic relic lying in Goa Velha which they later found out that it belonged to a time before the year 1510, which is considered as the start of Christianity in Goa. This relic is now on display at the museum in Pilar.

He had a look at the pictures and quipped, “You are true, this does look like a small Jesus Christ,” and further also told us about Peity of Michelangelo where the opposite is depicted and about a lot of theories that are attached to it. Our Lady which he quotes as “very beautiful” looks like she is 20 years old and whereas she is holding Jesus Christ who is in his mid-thirties.

He also told us that Our Lady of Peity is a popular symbol of devotion and that most of the churches and chapels have the statue or picture of it. He said that the statue is supposed to depict the body of Jesus on the

W lap of his mother, Mary after Crucifixion. But what I could see in front of me was more like the Our Lady with child Jesus like in Vailankanni but instead of child Jesus, this one was of grown Jesus with a beard.

When asked “what is your opinion on this particular statue,” he quoted with a smile that he has to go have a look at it before he commented on it, but he says that it could most probably be the mistake of the painter who repainted the statue later on.

Being little happy with the answers so far we finally approached Pervical Noronha who also lives in the same ward and is a very elderly gentleman who has been working with the government at very prominent posts. He suggests that it could be because of the ignorance of the sculptor and that he could most probably not be aware of the facts behind the depiction of the said statue.

These were the opinions I gathered, but was definitely not satisfied as according to me most sculptors are artists at heart and always have an important message to give through their creations. I will continue to probe, but for now, I am still left guessing.

BY ALFRED FERNANDES orn in the serene and quiet hamlet of Querim, Tiracol in North Goa, Brother Inacio Amadeo D’Souza became the first layman from Querim Tiracol to join Pilar Society in the year 1957. In 1962, Brother Inacio was posted in the remote Kurdi Village in Sanguem. At Kurdi, despite all odds, he left no stone unturned to open a Konkani Primary School.

His stay in Kurdi was however short-lived and he was soon transferred to the village of Uguem where he started his second Konkani Primary School. Both the schools, run in Devnagri script, are reportedly the first Konkani schools in Goa. At Uguem, he single-handedly conducted the primary classes and is now seeing the fruits of his labour as the students he had once taught now occupy prestigious positions in the government and private sector.

After completing his SSC at Guardian Angel High School, Curchorem in 1970, Inacio was transferred to Dadra and Nagar Haveli for mission work in 1973. He worked there for 13 long years and in 1979, he completed a course in Gujarati language and also got a Diploma in Journalism in the year 1971 at which point of time, he was a leading writer for ‘Vavreaddeancho Ixtt’ under the name of ‘Amadeu Kerkar’.

He has to his credit substantial amount of writings both in Devnagri and Roman script.

In 1988 he completed a course in Catechetical Theology at Kristo Jyoti College, Bangalore and in 1989 he saw his transfer to Sindhudhurg District as Pioneer along with Fr Agnel D’Souza at Kadawal Mission.

All along the years, Brother Inacio played an active role and was seen training young parishioners for choirs to perform at feasts, weddings, Holy Communion, etc. He is well known in Goa as well as Mangalore, Dadra Nagar Haveli, Gujarat, etc where people still turn to him in advance to conduct choir for festive occasions. In 2010, Brother Inacio was seen back in action at the Goa Provincial House of Pilar Society housed in the heart of Margao city where he has started the Pilar Music School.

The school is run full house under his leadership as its Headmaster.

The school is run in the evening hours with Brother Inacio providing individual attention to all the students.

He recently added another feather to his cap by securing over 80 percent marks in Grade IV exams conducted by Trinity Music College, London in Violin.

With all the achievements under his belt, Brother Inacio continues to live a simple life and believes in his Gurus which includes Fr Lactancio, Fr Moreno SJ and Fr Antonio Pereira SJ.

Therapist tries to turn Gay Man Straight, could be Struck Off A psychotherapist in Britain who tried to convert a gay man into a heterosexual will know her fate this week in a hearing that could see her stripped of her licence to practise under the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

Lesley Pilkington, sixty, a psychotherapist for twenty years, faces being stripped of her accreditation to the BACP after treating a patient who had told her he wanted to be ‘cured’ of his homosexuality.

The case will expose the growing use of hugely controversial therapies, from the US, which attempt to make homosexual men heterosexual.

The therapy has been described by the leading prof e s s i o n a l psychotherapy body as ‘absurd’, while the Royal College of Psychiatrists said ‘so-called treatments of homosexuality’ allow prejudice to flourish.

A small group of counsellors believe all men are born heterosexual but that some choose a homosexual lifestyle which can then be changed through counselling.

The patient was in fact a prominent homosexual rights campaigner and journalist, who secretly recorded two sessions with Pilkington, a devout Christian, before reporting her to the BACP. Pilkington says her method of therapy Sexual Orientation Change Efforts (SOCE) - is legitimate and effective. The therapy is practised by a handful of psychotherapists in Britain.

Pilkington, whose 29-year-old son is homosexual, said she was motivated by a desire to help others. “He is heterosexual. He just has a homosexual problem,” she said.

Pilkington has accused Patrick Strudwick, the award-winning journalist who secretly taped her, of entrapment. On the tape, Strudwick asks Pilkington if she views homosexuality as “a mental illness, an addiction or an antireligious phenomenon”. She replies, “It is

all of that”.

“Entering into therapy with somebody who thinks I am sick... is the singularly most chilling experience of my life,” said Strudwick.

Strudwick approached Pilkington at a largely Christian conference - run by the US organisation, The National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality - where he said he was unhappy with his homosexual lifestyle and that he ‘wanted to leave it’. He then requested ‘treatment for his same-sex attraction’.

In the disciplinary letter sent to Pilkington, she is accused by BACP of ‘praying to God to heal him of his homosexuality’. She is also accused of having an ‘agenda that homosexuality is wrong and that gay people can change and that you allegedly attempted to inflict these views on him’.

Pilkington said, “He told me he was looking for a treatment for being gay. He said he was depressed and unhappy and would I give him some therapy. I told him I only work using a Christian biblical framework and he said that was exactly what he wanted.”

The therapist added, “We don't use the word ‘cure’ because it makes homosexuality sound like a disease. We are helping people move out of that lifestyle because they are depressed and unhappy. We say everybody is heterosexual but some people have a homosexual problem. Nobody is born gay. It is environmental; it is in the upbringing.”

Botany Bay is a bay in Sydney, New South Wales. On April 29, 1770, Botany Bay was the site of James Cook’s first landing of HMS Endeavour on the continent of Australia, after his extensive navigation of New Zealand. Later the British planned Botany Bay as the site for a penal colony. Out of these plans came the first European habitation of Australia at Sydney Cove. Cook’s landing marked the beginning of Britain’s interest in Australia and its eventual colonisation. Governor Arthur Phillip sailed the Armed Tender Supply into the bay on January 18, 1788. Purani Jeans… now on DVD HERALD FEATURES opular radio show ‘Purani Jeans with Anmol’, which airs on Radio Mirchi, is now out on DVD. The release of the DVD, titled ‘Maestros of Melody’, was attended by fans of the show and the host, RJ Anmol in Mumbai.

The retro show completed its second anniversary and RJ Anmol made it an affair to remember by bringing alive the musical stalwarts of the golden era at the venue, thus evoking nostalgia amongst the fans.

‘Maestros of Melody’ encompasses songs of the 25 legends of melodies including S D Burman, R D Burman, Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Mohd Rafi, O P Nayyar who made themselves unforgettable with their eternal creations. The distinguishing feature of this DVD is that it also contains video footage of RJ Anmol sharing unique, unheard stories about the music maestros.

This offering by Shemaroo Entertainment and the radio station is now available at all leading retail outlets.

Meanwhile in Goa, the radio station celebrated Makar Sankranti in a unique packaging of festive songs and a kitty party live on air on January 15. The kitty party had women from all walks of life sharing ideas, recipes and their favourite antakshari songs.

The Beat Root Boys belt out the Blues Again HERALD FEATURES n a new avatar at their recent performance at the Goa Chitra, Benaulim, the band featured a completely local line-up made up of some of the hottest musicians on Goa's live music circuit.

The concert began with UK ‘Goan’ Dave Kelly doing a soulful solo spot - singing and accompanying himself on an acoustic guitar. This triggered off the enthusiastic gathering. The pivot around which the band revolves, singer/harp player Pratish Motwane, then took the stage to announce the new line-up featuring Shane Ballentine on guitar, Sameer Alvares on keyboards and Lester Godinho on drums in addition to past members Colin D'Cruz on bass and Dave Kelly on guitar.

The opening jam itself brought the house down through the course of some lengthy and exciting solos of each member of the band. This, as Pratish announced was just the beginning of things to come.

Pratish pointed out that the current line-up was tailor made especially for Goa Chitra and then decided to rename the band the ‘Goa Chitra Blues Band’ for the rest of the evening. From then on track after track that was belted out, proved exactly why the Beat Root Boys rule the blues.

Of special mention would be youngsters Shane and Sameer who matched the virtuosity of their accomplished co-members.

The concert was a part of the ongoing ‘Great Music Revival Concert’ series 2010-2011. This series is a creative initiative to raise funds for Goa Chitra and bridge the gap between the past and the present with the musical ingenuity of Goa’s own testimony to its rich unforgettable musical past.

The concert is scheduled to showcase local and international talent.

Celebrating the Life of Blessed Joseph Vaz

HERALD FEATURES ith countless miracles attributed to him, the canonisation of Blessed Joseph Vaz is still underway. The feast of the 300th anniversary of the death of Blessed Joseph Vaz was celebrated across Goa on January 16, 2011.

A missionary who proclaimed the word of God in places that never heard of the Good News, Blessed Joseph Vaz from Sancoale enriched the lives of devotees who invoked his blessings. Born in Benaulim at his maternal house, the original house in Sancoale where Blessed Joseph Vaz lived is still standing strong. Also miraculous is the jackfruit tree from which young Joseph Vaz would climb down from his room to go to church at odd hours at night. The tree is said to have miraculous healing power as the tree is still alive after more than 300 years.

This year, the church was counting down the days to the feast by praying for Blessed Joseph Vaz to be canonised as a Saint. Thousands of devotees made their way to Sancoale to celebrate the feast and then headed to his house in Sancoale to see his prayer room and the beautiful paintings showing his journey in Sri Lanka. Blessed Joseph Vaz disguised himself as a washman, a farmer and even a fisherwoman to inform the few converted Catholics about the location of where Mass would be celebrated. As devotees are praying to Blessed Jospeh Vaz, everyone is praying for a powerful miracle that will complete the process of canonisation.

nown till now for his reality-based films, director Madhur Bhandarkar says that he wants to “shock” the audiences with his first rom-com, Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji. “For the first time I am coming out with a film which is very different from the realistic cinema which I make. Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji is about three guys and their love interest.

After making hard-hitting films like Page 3, Corporate, Fashion and Jail, I just thought let’s shock the audience with a different kind of cinema,” Bhandarkar said.

Dil Toh... stars Ajay Devgn, Omi Vaidya, Emraan Hashmi, Shruti Hassan, Shazahn Padamsee and Shraddha Das. Bhandarkar, a three-time national award winning director, said that though the film was different from his earlier works, it was still a “realistic” comedy. The film is not a senseless comedy. It is very logical and has the characters which one can relate to. “Everybody in the film... when you see the characters you will feel it is the story of a person who one can identify with,” Bhandarkar said.

When asked how the idea of making a comedy struck him, Bhandarkar said he always wanted to make one.

“In fact long time ago, when I was shooting Chandni Bar in Hyderabad, Tabu used to ask me why I don’t make a comedy.”

“I liked the films of Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterji, and I always thought a day will come when I will also make one. I am absolutely a very funny guy and I have a great sense of humour. I keep laughing at myself and love to mimic people,” he said.

Asked if it was difficult to make a comedy, Bhandarkar said, “It is very difficult to make people laugh through comedies, and especially through a film like Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji. But, overall, it was easy to direct the film due to the team.”

atalie Portman won the best actress in a motion picture drama award for here performance as a ballerina on a death spiral in the psychosexual thriller Black Swan. In her acceptance speech she thanked her co-stars and her fiancé, French ballet dancer and choreographer Benjamin Millepied, who she met on the film's set and with whom she is expecting a baby. Black Swan, critically acclaimed and heavily promoted, has been surging at the box office, giving it the kind of alignment that points toward a strong Oscar presence.

But he also remembered to toss some conciliatory words at Mark Zuckerberg, the Facebook co-founder who was made to look less than admirable in the unauthorised film but did not put any legal roadblocks in its way. “You turned out to be a great entrepreneur, a visionary and an incredible altruist,” Sorkin said.

ollywood legend Robert De Niro has been honoured with the prestigious Cecil B DeMille award at the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards for his outstanding contribution to the world of entertainment. Considered one of the greatest actors of his time, the 67-year-old has acted in over 80 titles with his biggest break as the young Vito Corleone in The Godfather Part II, a role that won him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He has to his credit films like Mean Streets, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, New York, New York, and Meet the Parents to name a few. Having produced over 30 titles, he has also wielded the megaphone for films like The Good Shepherd and A Bronx Tale.

outh Indian actress Tapasee, who is enjoying her share of name and fame in Tamil and Telugu films, has turned down a Hindi project by Tollywood filmmaker Puri Jagannath. It is strange considering the fact that film starred Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan and any South actress would die to have a role with Big B. Moreover, Tapasee was offered a meaty role in this Hindi film titled Buddha. Renowned Bollywood filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is the producer of this film, which will have Big B in the lead role.

The director approached Tapasee with the offer of this film but she has reportedly declined to be a part of it. However, no official confirmation has come up yet.

Tapasee is now enjoying the success of her latest Kollywood release Aadukalam, which starred Dhanush in the lead role. The model turned actress has already signed half-adozen films in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam languages.

It is being speculated that the 22-year old actress has got unexpected success in South Indian films, and hence she does not want to shift her focus as of now.

ichael Douglas did the honours of presenting the last award of the glittering night, the award for best motion picture drama. Douglas' peers were as happy to see him at the 68th Golden Globe Awards as Douglas was to be there, that too after announcing just last week that he had beaten cancer. “There's just got to be an easier way to get a standing ovation,” the actor said after receiving a rousing response when he walked on stage. This was Douglas’ first major public appearance since completing treatment. "After you go through this, you have a greater appreciation of your fans.

I feel very happy to be here,” he said. As fans shouted his name from the bleachers, he turned to wave and smile.

Kiss or Cuddle is what People crave for rather than just Sex

A Big Breakfast Generally doesn’t help Weight Loss

t has been nearly 50 years since Elvis Presley released the smash hit ‘It’s now or never’, in which he goes on to plead, ‘Come hold me tight, kiss me my darling, be mine tonight’.

And according to a latest research on expressions of intimacy, a close embrace or kiss is what people crave for rather than just sex.

“People want emotional intimacy, to feel bonded and romantically attached to another,” said researcher Justin Garcia, a SUNY Fellow in the Laboratory of Evolutionary Anthropology and Health at Binghamton University. “This drive lies deep within our evolved biology; and while sex is important, so too is the drive to connect to a lover,” he said.

His study showed that roughly 95 per cent of men and women said they would like to cuddle amongst other intimate behaviours. But, the context of whom they are cuddling with matters a lot.

In romantic relationships, 97 per cent of both men and women reported that they like to cuddle up close with their partner, but in uncommitted sexual hook-ups only 52 per cent of men and 61 per cent of women like to cuddle.

The same general trend appears for a host of intimate behavioural expressions.

According to Garcia, there are two important things to be learnt from this study.

“A majority of both men and women like to kiss and cuddle,” he said.

“The sexes aren’t as different in our desire for love as we often think.

But it is important to note that the context of these affiliative gestures makes a lot of difference,” he added.

While a majority of us like to cuddle, kiss, and hold our partners in our arms, it often matters how emotionally bonded we are to that partner. The emotional connect enhances the cuddling pleasure.

“In some cases, these behaviours are about trying to become emotionally closer to the partner,” said Garcia.

“We quite often see that sex isn’t always just about sex - it is often one of many ways to find someone to love,” he added.

ar from ensuring weight loss, a hearty breakfast could be a sure recipe for piling on the pounds, say researchers. The study, which contradicts the dieting mantra that a big breakfast takes the edge off appetite, found that those who gorge in the morning continue to eat heartily throughout the day.

The German researchers say those who want to lose weight should start watching what they eat from the minute they get up.

Volker Schusdziarra of the Technical University of Munich asked almost 400 men and women to eat normally but to note down especially everything they ate for 10 days. He then checked the amount of calories in each of their meals.

According to a popular notion, a big breakfast should curb appetite and so be followed by smaller meals over the rest of the day.

Instead, people tended to eat similar amounts for lunch and dinner, no matter how they started the day.

This meant that a big breakfast boosted overall calorie intake. Schusdziarra said that the conventional advice is based on artificial calculations and has little relevance to people’s everyday lives.

“It is said that if you eat a big breakfast you will eat fewer calories over the rest of the day but that is not true,” Schusdziarra said.

The researcher added that skipping breakfast all together does not necessarily lead to weight gain, with many healthy weight people not eating the meal regularly.

iPad cutting into Precious TV Time

here is no doubt that the Apple iPad is a unique device that is changing the way people use the web. Despite the fact that the critics keep cribbing about its flaws, iPad continues to sell in huge numbers and its rivals have a long way to go before they can catch up with it in terms of user base.

Whether it will prove to be the nemesis for other portable web access devices remains to be seen but a new study says that it is changing the TV viewing habits of the people. Amazing as it may sound to some people, the iPad users are apparently using the device to access the web and read stuff online mostly during the TV prime time hours. So they are giving the soaps and movies on the small screens a miss these days.

The study has been done by a web service that keeps track

of web content use, named ReadItLater. The study claims that the majority of iPad users access the web through their tablets between 7pm to 11pm which everyone knows is the prime time slot. However, it could also be possible that the users are taking their iPad during the time in the bedroom and watching TV while browsing the web. Nevertheless, the TV channel executives who aim to lure the viewers to their shows should feel worried as the viewers would not give full attention to the TV programs even if they use the iPad in the TV room.

Before the advent of Internet and technology in such a massive way, many used to read newspapers or books at such times. Presently, they are getting addicted to digital reading.
