JUDGEMENT DAY FOR KASAB PTI MUMBAI, MAY 2

Seventeen months after terrorists from Pakistan unleashed death and destruction on the country’s financial capital, a court here will pronounce its verdict tomorrow on the fate of lone surviving 26/11 gunman Ajmal Kasab and two alleged Indian conspirators. Kasab, a native of Faridkot, along with nine slain terrorists, has been charged with killing 166 people, including 25 foreigners, and injuring 304 others at the instance of Lashkar-eTaiba (LeT). The Indian duo — Faheem Ansari and Sabauddin Ahmed — are accused of conspiracy in the brazen attacks. They are alleged to have prepared the maps of terror targets and passed them on to the LeT for execution of their diabolic plan. If held guilty, they may face death penalty. Ten terrorists, trained and armed by the outlawed LeT in Pakistan, had descended on India’s financial nerve centre on a fidayeen (suicide) mission and wreaked havoc during the 60hour siege, killing and wounding people at will. The trial, perhaps the fastest in a terror case in India, had commenced on May 8 in a special court set up at Arthur Road Jail which recorded 3,192 pages of evidence after examining 658 witnesses on 271 working days. Thirty witnesses in the court of judge M L Tahaliyani identified Kasab as the man who had

NY cops foil terror plot

Police today foiled a major terror attack by defusing an “amateurish” but potentially powerful crude car bomb in the heart of the New York city’s famous tourist hub of Times Square, averting what could have been a “very deadly event” in the United States. “We are very lucky,’ New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a hurriedly-organised press conference. “We avoided what could have been a very deadly event,” he said. “It certainly could have exploded and had a pretty big fire and a decent amount of explosive impact.” Traffic was stopped and redi-

rected to the surrounding areas as police closed down a section of Times Square after a foot patrol officer spotted a parked Sports Utility Vehicle identified as a Nissan Pathfinder around 6:30 pm last evening (4 am ISI today). The officer noticed a box inside the vehicle with smoke coming out of it. The car parked in a crowded area was later found to be loaded with a bomb made of electrical components, three propane gas tanks and two additional gas canisters. Soon after hotels, shops and restaurants in and around the Times Square were shut down and thousands of people, including tourists, residents and theatre-goers, evacuated from the area.

Prosecution also tabled CCTV footages of the terrorists moving about with guns and firing at people. The images were captured on CCTV cameras fitted at CST railway station, Times of India building, and Taj Mahal and Oberoi hotels. Photographs of Kasab shot by photojournalists Sebastian D’Souza and Sriram Vernekar were also placed before the court.

BJP seeks letters of support PTI NEW DELHI/RANCHI, MAY 2

Wary of reported rebellion among Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) legislators in Jharkhand, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership has sought letters of support from the 18 JMM legislators to provide a stable BJPled government in the tribal state, failing which the alliance will fall through. BJP has insisted that the JMM MLAs give their letters of support to the party by Tuesday. A BJP leader told Press Trust of India that in the meeting held here yesterday, BJP President Nitin Gadkari had categorically told Hemant, son of JMM chief Shibu Soren, that all JMM MLAs will have to pledge their support as BJP could not form a shaky government in Jharkhand. “Even if one of the 18 JMM MLAs says he will not support a BJP-led government, we may decide not to form a government. We do not want to give the impression that we are dying to form a government in Jharkhand or that we are hungry for power,” the BJP leader said. As political uncertainty in Jharkhand continued for the sixth day, JMM today asserted that Shibu Soren will stay on as chief minister for now.

Currently, the traffic cell has two interceptors but it wants to equip itself with speed radar guns as the rate of accidents happening due to over-speeding and drunken driving is on the rise, said the official from the traffic cell. It has planned to purchase

about 25 speed radar guns worth Rs 2 lakh each. The government has given a green signal for this proposal, said the officer. A supplier from Delhi is being considered for the supply of the equipments, he added. Campaign against drunken driving :The traffic police has intensified its campaign against drunken driving and regular checkups are being conducted between 7 pm and 11 pm as most accidents happen either because of over-speeding or because people drive/ ride in inebriated conditions, said the officer. Sex scandal hits BJP in Karnataka PTI BANGALORE, MAY 2

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Karnataka was today hit by a sex scandal when a minister resigned following an allegation of rape made by the wife of his friend. Food and Civil Supplies Minister Harathalu Halappa quit after a leading Kannada daily published a front-page report alleging he sexually assaulted the wife of a social worker. Within hours of Halappa’s exit, the woman and her hus-

band from Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa’s home district Shimoga lodged a complaint of rape and criminal intimidation against him with Director General of Police (DGP) Ajai Kumar Singh tonight. After filing the complaint at the DGP’s residence, the woman’s husband Venkatesh Murthy said the police chief assured that an inquiry would be conducted. “He (Halappa) has done a bad thing. He should be punished. It (the entire episode) should not become an entertainment

for people,” Murthy said while his wife alleged that Halappa had threatened to kidnap their children. Murthy also alleged Halappa held out a threat to their life and added they did not file the complaint in Shimoga as they feared it might be “dumped” due to “political pressure”. Earlier, Halappa rubbished the media report, dubbing it “baseless and untrue” and saw a political conspiracy by opponents, including some from his own ruling party.
