The Goa Government Employees Association today decided to go on an indefinite pen-downtool-down strike from September 22 protesting against the government’s failure to meet their demand on upgradation of pay scales. A decision in this regard was reached at a joint meeting of the GGEA working committee and the taluka committees. The GGEA general secretary said that the meeting unanimously resolved to resume the pen-down-tool-down strike from September 22 till the order of upgradation of pay scales to the left out categories is issued by the government. “All employees were already geared up earlier and awaiting to resume the strike in case the
demand is not settled by the government,” he said adding “However considering that there is enormous delay on the part of the government, despite giving a written assurance, we have resolved to go on a strike.” He said that the taluka committees expressed their total support and determination to fight the injustice and informed the working committee that the employees of respective talukas have assured their total support. The working committee guided the taluka committees about handling the situation during the strike period and also assured to depute office bearers in the respective talukas for overall supervision, he said. The scandal-prone Pakistan cricket team today sent shockwaves through world cricket after it was disclosed that the scoring patterns in its innings during Friday’s one day international (ODI) match against England were fixed, prompting the International Cricket Council (ICC) to launch an immediate probe. The ICC action followed disclosures by British tabloid The Sun that an individual in the Pakistani team camp is believed to be the ringleader who was taking money from bookies in India and Dubai and ensuring their orders were carried out. “The Sun is withholding details of the alleged fix while the investigation continues - but we can reveal that horrified ICC chiefs launched their investigation before the Pakistan innings had even finished. “The probe centers on an individual within the team camp who is believed to be the ringleader, taking money from book-

The paper reported that bookies knew details of Pakistan’s innings before the match even began and it had given the evidence to the game’s governing body ahead of the game. Immediately after the news came out, the ICC said in a statement that the investigation is warranted as information about
a certain scoring pattern appeared to be “correct”. “The ICC has launched an investigation into activities that took place during the third OneDay International between England and Pakistan at The Oval, London, on September 17,” the governing body said. “Following information received by the ICC from a British newspaper and its source, the
ICC now believes a full investigation is warranted,” it added. Pakistan won the match by 23 runs to keep their hopes alive in the five-match series after losing the first two games. According to the newspaper, the scoring patterns of the game matched with the “target that bookies had been told in advance by a fixer.” “Illegal bookies in India and Dubai apparently knew in advance what would happen so they could launch a betting coup. But The Sun’s undercover team was able to pass details to ICC inspectors before the match began,” the report said. ICC Chief Executive Officer Haroon Lorgat thanked the tabloid for providing the information and said the evidence on table demands an inquiry. “A source informed The Sun newspaper that a certain scoring pattern would emerge during certain stages of the match and, broadly speaking, that information appeared to be correct,” Lorgat said.

Sending a strong message that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was firmly behind jailed Amit Shah, the party’s senior leader L K Advani today went to Sabarmati prison to meet the former Gujarat minister who is an accused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter killing case. The visit of Advani, who is the second BJP leader to meet the close aide of Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the prison after Arun Jaitley visited him on September 11, came a day after the party broke into Congress bastion winning a byeelection in Kathlal assembly constituency for the first time in five decades. Endorsing Modi’s views, Advani slammed the Centre for using the Central Bureau of In-
vestigation (CBI) s a tool in targeting the BJP government in the State against the backdrop of the former minister of State for home being booked in the Sohrabuddin case by the Central investigating agency. Advani also visited Shah’s residence in Naranpura area to meet his family members. “The Centre is using CBI as a tool to defame our government which is absolutely incorrect. People will give them the reply of this. The results of yesterday’s byelection is not ordinary,” Advani said after meeting the family members. Advani was accompanied by State BJP in-charge Balbir Punj. “Me and Advani together met Shah in the jail today,” Punj told PTI. Advani’s visit assumes significance as it reflects BJP’s stand that the BJP has not abandoned
Shah despite him being behind bars. The BJP has maintained that Shah is innocent and has been falsely implicated in the 2005 fake encounter case. Shah has been described by the CBI as the “kingpin” of the entire conspiracy leading to the killing of Sohrabuddin in the fake encounter, killing of his wife Kausarbi and also Tulsi Prajapati, a key witness. Cong reaction: Congress today attacked BJP over Advani meeting Shah, wondering what message the party wanted to send out to people by a gesture like this. “If the former prime minister aspirant of the BJP goes and meets him (Shah) in jail, what is the signal the BJP is trying to send to the country in its belief in rule of law,” party spokesman Manish Tewari said.

The next morning, the vehicle was towed to Chitradurga at 11.30 am and the Rodrigues family members were hopeful that the vehicle would be serviced at the official Maruti service centre there. “Despite being the official service centre, they took one full day to replace the damaged radiator. Moreover, we were shocked that a new radiator had to be brought from Bangalore,” recalled Joaquim. “As a result, all of us were forced to stay back in a hotel at Chitradurga that night. Had the service station carried out the job in time, my family would be saved,” said Joaquim, as tears rolled down his cheeks. Describing the tragedy, Joaquim said the mishap took place at about 1.30 pm on Friday. “Conception was driving the Wagon R in front and we were trailing him in our car.
