Cops will be freed today: Maoists Reject talks offer by Nitish
PTI JAMUI (BIHAR), SEPT 4
A Maoist spokesman tonight said the three policemen taken hostage by them in Lakhisarai would be freed by tomorrow morning and the outfit’s top decision-making body rejected the talks offered by Bihar government. Avinash, the self-proclaimed spokesman, said the Central CPI (Maoist) has decided to release the hostages “unconditionally on humanitarian considerations”. “The Maoists Central Committee met in the jungle near Jamui late this evening after the all-party meeting chaired by
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar offered talks with us... we are not going to get influenced by it”, he told local mediamen. Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had earlier today invited Maoists holding three policemen captive for talks even offering them safe passage after securing an all-party consensus. A day after the bullet-riddled body of Lucas Tete, one of the four abducted policemen, was found, Kumar said the all party meeting convened by him also appealed to the Maoists to release unharmed the three remaining hostages who the rebels said were safe. The government offer for
talks after a Maoist spokesman called for an immediate dialogue came on a day when police arrested nine Naxalites including two who were reported to be involved in the kidnapping incident in Lakhisarai district on Sunday. The arrest of the rebels came when combing operations were expanded to fresh areas in Munger district. “I am personally ready for holding talks with the Maoists. We guarantee providing full security and safe passage to Maoist representatives irrespective of the outcome. No police action will be taken,” Kumar told reporters after an all party meeting here.

Red corner notice against Atala HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, SEPT 4
After a prolonged delay, Goa Police finally issued ‘red corner notice’ against the drug peddler Yaniv alias Atala Benaim ever since he has been missing since last week of July. Highly placed sources in the Crime Branch confirmed that the red corner notice was issued against Atala on September 1. The investigating team had revealed they realized Atala’s sudden disappearance when he failed to respond to summons that required him for some clarifications in the drug nexus probe. The alleged drug peddler was arrested on March 9 from a shack at Pernem after his jilted girlfriend Lucky Farmhouse secretly filmed his confession wherein Atala was seen bragging about his connection with Goa Police.
The videos uploaded on Internet video sites – youtube.com and metacafe.com, also showed Atala speaking on how anti-narcotic men stole narcotics from the Mapusa court locker to resell in the market. He was released on bail by Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Court on June 21 with various conditions imposed on him. The Crime Branch has already issued a ‘look out circular’ against him on August 25, 18 days after the missing episode came to light.

Mired in a spot-fixing scam, the Pakistani trio of Salman Butt, Mohammed Aamir and Mohammed Asif have told investigators that they took money from alleged bookie Mazhar Majeed but denied any wrongdoing. The suspended trio, being grilled by Scotland Yard here, claimed the money they took from Majeed was on account of sponsorship contracts they had signed with different commercial organisations. They insisted that they did not know that Majeed, working
as an agent for them, was also a bookmaker. “The players also showed their written contracts for these sponsorship deals to the police,” Pakistan legal advisor Tafazzul Rizvi told Geo TV. “The players have contested
the allegation and also volunteered themselves for police investigations,” he said. According to reports, 50,000 pounds were recovered from the hotel room of Butt. The three players were suspended by the International
Cricket Council (ICC) after a British tabloid claimed that they were involved in spot-fixing. Rizvi also confirmed that the investigating authorities had found some currency from a player’s room during the search of the team hotel in London last weekend. “But just having currency does not mean the player is involved in criminal or illegal activities,” he contended. “They were not aware of their agent’s illegal activities. They only had a relationship of playeragent with him. They have constantly proclaimed their (Continued on page 11)
