New Voices Inside the Brain of a Messy Procrastinator By Kimberly Young The way time goes so fast is just ridiculous. There should be more hours in a day. Then maybe I would have more time to procrastinate. Yes, that’s it! More time to procrastinate! There should be more hours in a day. I never have time to master the art of procrastination. Yes that’s it! More time to procrastinate! Just make the days longer; it would be better. I never have time to master the art of procrastination. The time I have procrastinating is just not enough. Just make the days longer; it would be better. There should be more time to procrastinate. The way time goes so fast is just ridiculous!

New Voices is a student published creative writing journal that prints annually at Xavier. Featured in this issue is the work of recent alumnus Kimberly Young. She graduated in May 2013 with an English major and double minor of mass communication and French. She is originally from Tennessee. A few of her works can be seen in the newest edition of New Voices, Fantastic Fantasies, which will be released this fall.

XU club promotes gender equity To the Editors: We would like to increase the visibility of the Gender Equity club on Xavier’s campus and invite all students to learn more about the group and what we do. Now in its third year, its purpose is to encourage inclusion on campus and in the community as well as address gender and sexual orientation issues in society. Gender Equity is gender identity (men, women, gender queer) and sexual orientation (hetero & LGBT identified) inclusive. Last year, Gender Equity raised awareness of the gender-race wage gap through gender gap sales (prices are based on relative earnings compared to white males, based on race and gender), held a voter registration drive at the Canal Street bus station, and co-sponsored a feminist film series in celebration of Women’s History Month. This year we plan to expand our outreach to include events during anti-bullying month in October in addition to activities during Women’s History Month. Gender Equity meets every other Wednesday from 4:30-5:30 p.m. The next meeting will be Sept. 18. For more information, please contact Terrell Buckson at buckson.ent@gmail.com or join the Facebook page at XULA Gender Equity. Thank you, Dr. Megan Osterbur, Assistant Professor of Political Science Advisor for the Gender Equity organization mosterbu@xula.edu 504.520.7581

What’s on your mind?

“What do you know about SGA and XAB and what do you expect from them this year?” By Ashlee Hill Staff Writer

Lauren Smith Atlanta, Ga. Freshman, Mass Communication

David Elliot Houston, Texas Sophomore, Psychology Pre-Med

What I know about XAB is they like to create activities for the students that go here. This year I expect a live concert for homecoming or Springfest. I think they shouldn’t have any local artists, though, because people who are out of state won’t know about them so I suggest other live performers for these events.

I don’t really know much about SGA or XAB, but I think they had a lot to do with the Freshman Orientation this year. I would like to shout them out for doing a really good job with orientation. From what I hear though they are in charge of Springfest and I expect them to deliver great performers this year.

Candice Burke Chicago, Ill. P2, Pharmacy

Robert Singleton New Orleans, La. Sophomore, Chemistry Pre-Pharm

I know one of my friends on XAB is named Obi Oko and I would like to point out that he is an excellent member that gives SGA and XAB a good image. What I expect from them this year is more change in activities and how they are run, student involvement, and more awareness of these events.

I know that SGA and XAB are student organizations that promote enrichment of campus life and student interaction. What I expect from them this year is a variety of performers at Springfest or Homecoming.

Kyle Houston New Orleans, La. Junior, Art

Ibraheem Pedro Houston, Texas P4, Pharmacy

I think SGA does a good job of getting out to the students and letting them know what events are happening on campus. I’m confident that SGA will do an even better job this year and I expect nothing but the best from them.

Sam Ebonni Jr. Atlanta, Ga. Senior, Biology Pre-Med

I think SGA and XAB try to boost up student morale as far as attending their events, but when it comes to the event, they fail my and other students’ expectations. If I were on SGA or XAB, I would come up with better themes for events, which is what I expect from them this year.

Chris Howard Dallas, Texas Sophomore, Education

I know that current presidents of XAB and SGA are doing an awesome job! The Welcome Back Week going on was very successful and the freshmen seemed to enjoy orientation. I am a part of XAB and I want students to expect great things for Homecoming this year.

I know SGA and XAB are organizations that are made up of the highest caliber students at Xavier and are designed to make Xavier a better experience for us students. As one of the younger students, I look to them when events on campus are fun or don’t go smoothly. I expect them to be more active this year.

Nandi Wilkerson Washington, D.C. Sophomore, Chemistry Pre-Pharm

Ernest Lumpkins New Orleans, La. Junior, Marketing

I know XAB is the back bone of spirit around Xavier and that they host events on campus. I’m not really sure what SGA does but I feel that SGA and XAB go hand-in-hand and make things happen around campus. All in all I think that XAB is responsible for having fun and SGA is responsible for the business part of fun.

xulaherald.com

I know that either XAB or SGA is responsible for throwing all the events on campus. I expect more fun and new activities. I want to do more enjoyable outings than just movie nights, and, of course, more parties.

The Butler By Tiffany Brownlee Staff Writer

Based on the life of Eugene Allen, Lee Daniels’ The Butler recounts the events of Cecil Gaines' life from a plantation slave to a servant in the White House. After learning the tricks of the trade in a pastry shop, in which Gaines (Forest Whitaker) had broken into beforehand, he is recommended for a servant job at a hotel, where he meets his soon-to-be wife, Gloria (Oprah Winfrey). Years later, Gaines is hired to work in the White House during Eisenhower’s term, and the film then begins to recreate the life of Gaines as he serves eight United States presidents.

Page 7

With eight terms of servitude packed into two hours of footage, Lee Daniels takes the audience through important moments in U.S. History, such as Kennedy's assassination, the Civil Rights movements, and the Vietnam War. Because the story is told through the eyes of Gaines, the audience gets a real perception of these events, and how they shaped the life of Americans at that time. The Butler, also stars Cuba Gooding Jr., Robin Williams, Alan Rickman, and Terrence Howard. The Butler is not only entertaining to watch, but also geared towards students who want a better understanding of how the drastic changes in the United States impacted the life of African Americans in the past.

Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett’s American horror film, “You’re Next”, premiered Aug. 23. This film features less-known actors such as, Rob Moran (Paul Davinson), Sharni Vinson (Erin Davinson), Joe Swanberg (Drake Davinson), Amy Seimetz (Aimee Davison), and Barbara Crampton (Aubrey Davinson), but the cast performs well giving the audience another brilliant horror movie. This film is interesting, yet spine-chilling, and will keep viewers at the edge of their seats –or hiding behind their neighbor. According to the Box Office Mojo, a well-known movie statistic site affiliated

with IMBD, “You’re Next” has grossed approximately of $15.1 million to date, which some critic believe is a substantial amount money for low –budget film. In the film, The Davison Family and their guests (Aubrey, Paul, Erin, Drake, and Aimee) are celebrating Paul and Aubrey Davinson’s wedding anniversary, when masked killers interrupt their dinner and begin their killings. The horror of the film and the most suspenseful component of plot is that the family and its guests are not only, being attacked and brutally killed from the outside, but also the inside of the house. As the

movie progresses, the killings becoming more brutal and the characters commonly offer the audience some comic relief the movies brutality. However, in the end, Erin (Vinson), the surviving character, has special skills, which allow her to combat the masked killers, proving to be the most dangerous killer of them all. In short, “You’re Next”, primarily thought to be a low-budget horror parody, actually depicts a great twist on the common home-invasion horror film. Though many critics have given the movie low ranks, this review is giving “You’re Next” 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Three Kings

By Kristina Oliver Staff Writer

With over 65,000 copies sold, Tyrese, Ginuwine, and Tank take the R&B world by storm with their new album, Three Kings. The three R&B veterans released their album August 20, making a national debut as number 3 on the Billboard 200 chart. With singles such as, "Sex Ain't Never Felt Better" and "I Need," TGT are known to create a positive and sexual feel in the bedroom because of their smooth collaborative voices, and past successions on previous solo

albums. Furthermore, even after going through a 6 year hiatus on account of difficulties with record labels, many fans are now claiming Three Kings as the R&B album of the year, including the artists themselves. In a recent interview, Tyrese states that the TGT group is a dedicated trio that would create the "ultimate R&B fan experience" due to their tight bond and positive energy. Tank describes the Three Kings album

xulaherald.com

as being a "nice and fresh new adventure," with a one of a kind feel that no other R&B album can touch. However, with their close friendship and contract with Atlantic Records, TGT is hoping to bring back R&B as a new start. In other words, if you are going through "love, sex, energy, challenges, and conflicts in a relationship," then I suggest you pick up their album in stores now. You won't regret it!

Xperiences By Lauren Smith Photographer The goal of freshman orientation was to make new students feel comfortable with Xavier and to have fun. As a freshman, I feel that that goal was accomplished. During the day, we attended seminars to give us knowledge on all things XU. One seminar that stood out was the session about financial aid that told

the class of 2017 how to make sure we continue to get financial aid. For example, we learned that swiping our ID card in class card readers tracks our attendance, and if we miss too much class we can get an FE, fail the class, and that could jeopardize our financial aid. When we were not in

seminars, PDPC kept us entertained with a talent show, movie night, Wild N’ Out shows, flag group competitions, and events to help our mind, body, and soul. There was also a day dedicated to community service. From the informative seminars to the energetic

peer deans, I fully enjoyed my freshman orientation. I can be certain that I’m not only speaking for myself, but for the entire class of 2017 when I say thank you XAB, SGA, PDPC, peer deans, and everyone who was a part of our freshman experience. We are proud to exclaim, “I AM a Xavierite!”

It is an annual observance to create awareness about behavioral health, prevention, and treatment. avier’s campus kickoff for the 2013 United Negro College Fund 5k Run/Walk will take place Sept. 18 and 20 from 11-1:30 in the UC. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to participate and can register those days. The UNCF is an organization that raises money for historically black colleges and universities across the country. The New Orleans chapter of UNCF procures funds that are dispersed to Xavier University and neighboring institution, Dillard University. Of the 26 years that New Orleans’ UNCF chapter has hosted this event, Xavier has participated every year, using the walk as not only an opportunity for fit fun, but a pivotal means for future funding, according to Nannette Smith, Director

and treatment, said Shirley Labbe of the Counseling and Wellness Center. A behavioral health display is on the library resource center first floor through Sept. 13. A Recovery Day rally is Wednesday, Sept. 11, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on the yard. Jacques Detiege, a Xavier assessment specialist, speaks at 11 a.m., followed by a skit with the Collegiate 100 Black Men Xula chapter. There will be infomational tables and a number of mental healthcare organization. At 6 p.m. in room 205c in the University Center, Dr. A. Kenison Roy III speaks on “The Disease of Addiction.” Labbe said this is dedicated to education. “We want people to realize that a lot of individuals are in different types of recovery and you may not necessarily be the person in need of help. It may be a friend, a family member,

or simply a person of your community who has been in situations where they couldn’t deal with things,” Labbe said. “They’re reaching out for help because they’re in pain or feel hopeless and they use risky behavior to more or less find a coping mechanism.” Labbe said, “Your coping mechanism can be alcohol, drugs, even over-eating; any type of habit that is going to create unhealthy situations for them is what we are here to eliminate.” Labbe said people should understand how their actions have longterm effects, and may lead to unhealthy and unethical situations.
