Sodexho, Cafeteria focus of Town Hall by Mia Ruffin Staff Writer
SGA hosted its first official town hall meeting of the year on Monday, Sept. 17, in the Administration Auditorium. The committee’s Chief of Staff, Lawrence Jackson, opened the night by introducing the SGA cabinet. The 13 member team will work as liaisons between the student body and SGA on a number of matters, such as Commuter Affairs, Admissions and Student Services. Discussion was soon opened to the audience. The town hall addressed questions concerning housing, social events, nutrition, education and planning. There were representatives from Sodexho and University Planning present. Sodexho representative Allen Anderson addressed town hall turnout and cafeteria complaints. “I’ve gotten 300 complaints since school started but they don’t even have 300 people here,” he said. The cafeteria is a conversation starter on campus. Hairnets, more food variety and access to to-go boxes were all issues meeting attendees had. Anderson said that he would consult his superiors about student concerns but that the most efficient solution involved the student body speaking with them also. SGA President Ashley Trussell said that while they may not be able to provide immediate solutions, representatives from a number of campus departments would be present at the next town hall meeting. She urged students to fill out suggestion forms if they want changes implemented. A commencement announcement email was sent on Sept. 14 to the student body about the number of tickets each student would receive for graduation. Trussell concluded the meeting with a statement about the administration’s decision to give five tickets per graduating senior. “[They] didn’t ask for any student body input in that matter. If [the student government’s plans] doesn’t work… we’ll have to rise together. #YOWO means you only walk once,” Trussell said.

Do You Feel Xavier’s Dress Code is Effective & Do You Feel Students Dress Appropriately on Campus? by Meagan Walker Staff Writer
Victoria Jones, Biology, Baton Rouge, LA As far as dress code in the cafeteria I feel like there shouldn’t be discriminated against male and female. They should both be able to wear tank tops in the cafeteria. People who don’t stay on campus had to go all the way home or find somebody here just to get a t-shirt just to eat.
Anjanique Hill, Sales & Marketing, New Orleans, LA I didn’t know Xavier had a dress code honestly. Students around here don’t care how they dress. Some come in the shorts they sleep in. Honestly I can understand you have the right to dress how to but it is school.
Reyale Jones, Mass Communication, Dallas, TX
Myleeza Mingo, Chemistry Pre-Pharm, Bogalusa, LA
I don’t feel like a dress code should be enforced because this is a college campus. We should be free to wear what we want. I don’t think I dress inappropriately from day to day. I try not to.
I think Xavier’s dress code is effective to an extent. Sometimes the freshmen take it a little overboard but the upperclassmen play as a role model as to how you should dress and slowly and surely they are becoming more professional. Justin Brown, Pharmacy P3, New Orleans, LA/Virginia
Tre’ Morris, Chemistry Pre-Pharm, Memphis, Tenn
Students should wear what they want to wear to be comfortable in the class. They will achieve better grades.
I feel as though Xavier’s dress code is good. I see a little foolishness from time to time but overall it’s pretty good. For instance I have on Khakis, loafers, and a polo so I feel as if I fit in within the dress
Mariah Federick, Computer Science, Chicago, IL
Celeste Coleman, Bio Chemistry, Denver, CO I didn’t know Xavier really had a dress code until they tried to start make everybody wear shirts with sleeves. There was no notice given and I think most people dress appropriately. When the freshmen first get here they dress crazy wild but that’s expected.
Yes I feel the dress code is effective. Certain stuff you just shouldn’t wear to school. Your breast shouldn’t be out while you’re in class, distracting the professor. College is there to teach you how to dress for the real world. Deanna Eaton, Speech Pathology, Chicago, IL
Ulyssia Cole, Chemistry Pre-Pharm, Meridian, Miss
I think students dress appropriately. I am not sure what the dress code is. I remember there were saying something about no tank tops in the cafeteria. I didn’t like that at all. So far I haven’t had a problem with the dress code.
I feel that some students do take it too far since we are in college and you don’t want to distract other students with what you have on or don’t have on. Students should be cautious of what they wear. A lot of people do come to Xavier and any little thing could spark some publicity.

Bump It or Dump It? “Marley”

Is gaining the world worth losing your soul? In the movie, an author Clay Hammond (Dennis Quad) is giving a reading of his novel, “The Words.” In the novel, Rory Jansen (Bradley Cooper), a struggling writer who plagiarized his best-selling novel, was presented the previous question. After gaining the fame and fortune he had always hoped for and living a seemingly happy life in denial, Jansen meets an old man, the actual writer of the novel he published, causing him to question the whole meaning and extent of his success and life. Throughout the movie, the Old Man (Jeremy Irons) tells Jansen his life story, while Hammond lives his story and narrates Rory’s; creating an “Inception” affect to the movie, grabbing your attention, and furthers excites the plot. Both Quaid and Irons give great performances, but Cooper was absolutely perfect for the role of Rory Jansen,

The B-Word in Hip Hop
by Anthony Lotten A&E editor
Recent discourse regarding the use of the word “bitch” in Hip-Hop music has been sparked once again. Only this time, it’s not scholars like Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, or prominent television personalities like Oprah who are calling attention to this issue and the larger issue of women being depicted – almost entirely - as sexual objects in rap songs and music videos. Two Chicago-bred artists, Lupe Fiasco and Kanye West, have rekindled this dialogue. Fiasco’s newest video, “Bitch Bad,” offers a commentary on the effects derived from overuse of the word “bitch” in lyrics and excessiverepresentations of that word in music videos. West’s tweets, inspired by Fiasco’s video, excites a conversation on the changing nature of derogatory words, and if it is morally acceptable to use these words when addressing one another. Over time, like the “n-word,” the “b-word” has become desensitized to a large extent and the negative Lupe Fiasco connation associated with it has been flipped, specifically when adjectives like “bad” or “pretty” are used in conjunction with it. Without these adjectives, the “b-word” retains a harsh connation that few women would refer to themselves as or accept being called. The problem Hip-Hop is facing is not the use of the “b-word” or variations of it, but the senseless overuse of the term, which influences scores of youth, especially young girls, who aspire to become what they see on television: bad girls, who are usually depicted wearing little clothing, have surgically enhanced body parts, and are solely seen as Kanye West sexual objects. Is this all we have to discuss and show within our music? If it’s acceptable to call a female - or a female to call herself - a “bad bitch” and other endearing yet derogatory terms, where are the songs about women, ladies, girls, mothers, aunts, and sisters? The former seems to be ridiculously overrepresented.

This year has certainly been a big one for the rapper who has made a simple gesture such as “True” a phenomenon. The rapper 2 Chainz made his first ever Video Music Awards performance this year, changed his name and released his debut album entitled “Based on a T.R.U. The albums first hit single, “No Lie,” featuring Drake, sets the tone for the rest of the album. Even with his preschool lyrics, the album has many highlights. In August, Trey Songz released his fifth studio album, “Chapter V.” It’s roughly an hour long with 19 tracks. Welcome Extravaganza by Kristin Brooks Staff Writer
As a new freshman, I was asked to document the genuine freshmen experience. I was quite anxious as to what to do and expect. However, with the helping hand of the Peer Dean groups my fears quickly subsided. The freshmen experience was filled with vivacious chants, activities, bonding, and events pertaining to our hometowns. Interviewing various freshmen was more entertaining than strenuous. The majority of the freshmen community was not accustomed to the duration of rain, the music, vernacular, or street names. Ultimately, the class of 2016 embraced the exuberant feeling of welcome with pride. The freshmen community is looking forward to flourishing and I am looking forward to the rest of my studies as a Mass Communication major.

I am the class of 2016 Political Science major. I am originally from Los Angeles California, and attended Downtown Magnets High School –a small school in downtown Los Angeles. A few days after my arrival to Xavier University of Louisiana, I was asked to document Freshmen Orientation Week through the eyes of an incoming freshman. While covering events like Welcome Extravaganza, and Movie Night, I came across some amazing individuals, learning about and recording their distinct experiences at Xavier; including their nights filled with music, food, entertainment and flag groups. Despite the conclusion of Freshmen Orientation with the infamous Hurricane Isaac, Xavier University provided us, the new freshmen Xaverites, with an exciting and memorable week.

rom the moment world-renowned architect Caesar Pelli conceived the plans to its formal dedication on Oct. 6 with local and national Catholic leaders, the building of the St. Katharine Drexel Chapel has literally been a global effort. Pelli reached around the world to engage the finest architects, contractors, artists, sculptors and stone masons to construct what is certain to become an architectural icon on the New Orleans skyline. Dr. Kenneth St. Charles, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, has directed the campaign to raise $10 million in private funds to build the chapel. Xavier President Norman C. Francis, St. Charles, the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and a legion of Xavier employees and alumni have completed a labor of love to honor St. Katharine Drexel, who dedicated her life and personal fortune to establish educational opportunities for African American and Native American people. St. Katharine founded Xavier University in 1925, the only Catholic and Black university in America.
