Avoid Skin Cancer & Plan for Fall

I

t’s halfway through summer, it’s been hot and there have been Publisher’s Note ongoing raging forest fires in the Pacific Northwest! It’s the dog days of summer so I always pictured dogs lying around panting in the heat. Fans are going and I’m drinking a tall glass of cold iced tea, preferably herbal. The dog days of summer refer to the hottest time of the year but are also connected to when the constellation Sirius would rise just before the sun. This could occur in late July or the middle of August. Whatever the reason, the hottest time of the year is when we try to do the most outside yet also have to be wary of the sun’s intensity. The intensity can cause skin cancer and in this issue we feature an article on detecting skin cancer from an interview with Vancouver dermatologist Jason Rivers. I have been looking at pictures of skin cancer online and holy! Some of these pictures are enough to turn your stomach! You really don’t want any kind of skin cancer – it can be much worse than you think.

So that’s why we want you to be careful and protect yourself – know how to detect it, know which sunscreens to use, know how to look after yourself. It’s important to have fun outside and exercise – but do it safely. There is also an article on how aloe vera can help skin issues – like eczema, psoriasis, sun burn or prickly heat rash. See page 12. Also in this issue is an article on natural health education – it’s time to think about heading back to school and work. Maybe you have thought about learning something new in the natural health field? Now is the time to do your research and think about what you want – it can be very rewarding and change people’s lives. Maybe you want to start small with a workshop such as the ones on Bach Flower Remedies being taught this fall – see page 6. Or perhaps you would like to experience the magic of labyrinths this fall in a special retreat that will take you to several labyrinths on Vancouver Island. See page 14. There is always lots happening in the natural health world – enjoy the remainder of summer and plan for fall. Sincerely

Marilyn Zink

Eating Healthy On the Go

T

he final weeks of summer are here, and pretty soon fall will be upon us. Temperatures eventually will cool off and work and school schedules will heat up. Frankly, it takes a lot of work to keep a family healthy, an immune system strong, and energy levels high. In my naturopathic practice, I regularly counsel people on the power of nutrition. Boosting the brain with the fuel that it needs to function at its optimum hinges on having a few key nutrients during the school or work day. Breakfast: If you don’t have time to sit down to a fully cooked meal, do skip the quick and convenient cold cereal with milk. Have some eggs instead with whole grain toast and fruit or whip up a protein smoothie. In less than 10 min you can begin your day with the essential elements of protein, fiber and brain building nutrients that can keep you satiated until lunchtime. Brown rice, pea or hemp protein powders are always good bets – throw in some fruit and even a leafy vegetable (trust me, the kids will never know!), and your morning will pack a punch. Drop the “white” foods. Pretty much the vast 4

Herbal Collective Aug,’17

majority of foods that are ‘white’ are highly refined – white rice, pastas, breads, bagels, crackers, even table sugar and high fructose corn syrup. The processing strips the original food of its nutritional value, especially fiber. While carbohydrates are important in your diet, simple carbohydrates, such as the ones already mentioned, are absorbed very quickly in the body, spiking blood sugar levels rapidly, and triggering hunger usually within an hour or two of eating. Opting for complex carbohydrates such as whole grains – brown rice, barley and millet are a few examples – are heartier and healthier foods choices because they contain beta glucans, which naturally boost the immune system. Gluten-free options include amaranth and quinoa. Lunches: Again, all too often, we grab for the prepackaged

convenient food, which requires very little work to prepare. Unfortunately, many of those foods are filled with added sugars, starches, preservatives and little nutrition to fuel the hungry brain. I often tell my patients that crockpots are probably the greatest gift to mankind. Spending very little prep time the night before or over a weekend, the making of soups, stews, or chilis can provide great filling meals popped into a thermos, ensuring that kids have nourishing hot food at the ready. Combine your main lunch meal with raw veggies, salad, cut up fruit, and whole grain or gluten-free crackers. Wholesome sandwiches on whole grain bread can include egg or any mixed salad spreads such as chicken, salmon or tuna. Again, avoid the pre-packaged single serving options as they are not economical in the least, and usually filled with preservatives. Snacks: Let’s not forget these either! You’re not quite through the day yet. Fuelling yourself every several hours is important to keep the internal engine running, and to get nutritional boosts throughout the day. Personally, I spend time with my daughter cooking up batches of muffins, homemade granola, making hummus dip, applesauces and other quick bite snacks on the go. We will often freeze what we make and then take single portions out when needed for the lunchbox. During recess or breaks in the day, chew on some raw vegetable sticks, chopped fruit, nuts and seed assortments such as raw almonds, sesame, sunflower and walnuts for brain health.

are contribute to healthy blood flow and ultimately improved focus and healthier brain and nervous system function. I routinely prescribe a good fish oil supplement to my pediatric patients to ensure they start their school year on the right foot. You can find additional nutrition ideas and recipes on my website. Have a great remainder of your supper and I will see you all in September! / Dr. Olena Dr. Olena Gill is a Naturopathic Physician and Acupuncturist practicing in Parksville, B.C. Final additions: Last but not least, let’s talk about extras such adding healthy fats to any part of the diet, breakfast, lunch, snacks or dinner. Of course, nuts and seeds are an excellent source of vitamin E, potassium, magnesium, and antioxidant minerals. These are important for optimal cognitive functioning. The same goes for the consumption of more fatty or oily fish such as salmon, herring, sardines, or or ½ an avocado to the morning protein smoothie all of which Herbal Collective, Aug,’17

How to Heal Yourself with Bach Flower Remedies By Sarah Brune

A

re you intrigued with the Bach Flower Remedies and ever wondered what each of the 38 remedies can actually do and what is the best way to take them? The remedies often sit in a dark place on a low shelf in health food stores and by just looking at the name of the remedy it does not let you know exactly what it can do for you or how to take them. Below here are some answers to your questions. How do I know which ones to take? Think of how you are feeling emotionally right now. Then take the one or ones that correspond to those feelings. Dr. Bach wanted the remedies to have simple clear cut indication so they can be a form of self-help.

What is the dosage?

For immediate use for passing moods, simply take two drops of any remedy (four of Rescue Remedy)

of your choice from a stock bottle either by mouth or in a glass of water. For longer-term use, up to seven remedies (two drops and four of Rescue Remedy) of your choice can be added to a 30ml dropper bottle, topped up with mineral water. From this four drops can be taken at least four times a day. How long do I take them for? The remedies can be taken as often as needed, and there is no chance of over-dosing, if they are not needed they will not work. When do I need to seek the help of a qualified Bach Foundation Registered Practitioner? When you are not sure about which remedies to take for your particular situation. BFRPs are trained to help you select remedies, and at the same time teach you more about them. The role of the practitioner is to be the client's guide, listen to what they have to say, and then make suggestions as to which remedies can assist. These are then discussed and the client then makes the final decision on which remedies goes into their personal mix.

How to Detect Skin Cancer

W

hat’s that raised brown spot on your arm? Or does that mole look odd? Knowing how to detect skin cancer is often the first step in preventing it. There are seven indicators that put a person at high risk for skin cancer, according to Vancouver dermatologist Jason Rivers, who is also a clinical professor at the University of B.C. in the Department of Dermatology & Skin Science. These indicators are: fair skin, people who burn, easily, funny looking moles, beauty marks, a family history of skin cancer and the use of tanning beds. The three main types of skin cancer are melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. The most deadly type is melanoma. There were 7200 cases of melanoma in Canada last year. This year 1,250 people will die from it. More than 3-4 people a day die of skin cancer in Canada. Melanoma develops in the cells that cause pigment. It is more likely to cause problems and has a color to it – shades of black, brown and white. “Look for an ugly duckling,” says Rivers. Basal Cell Carcinoma is most common and doesn’t have a color. It appears as a small bump and has teeny blood vessels that bleed sometimes. It often occurs on the face. Squamous Cell Carcinoma looks more like a warty growth on the skin and forms a solid bump. It often appears on the neck, face and back and has a higher risk to spread through the body. It can be quite aggressive. Look for a persistent red scaly patch that sometimes crusts and bleeds. Skin cancer can be anywhere on the body. In women, it is most commonly on the legs or back and is often the result of tanning beds. In men the most common place is the back. For prevention, Rivers says the best sunscreens contain titanium, zinc oxide and iron oxide. Age spots themselves are not a concern – these can be treated with lasers in Dr. Rivers clinic. Treatment for skin cancer is surgery initially unless it spreads to other parts of the body – then chemotherapy or immunotherapy is required. He says some studies show that supplementing with Vitamin B3 can help reduce some types of skin cancer in the short run - squamous cell carcinoma.

Basal cell carcinoma, left, Squamous cell carinoma, right, and melanoma, below.

He says he encourages people to go out and exercise as it can also reduce skin cancer. Vitamin D can help with the immune system though as one gets more tanned the body absorbs less of it. Get the Very Best in Natural Health Education

Rhodiola - the Golden Root....

R

By Klaus Ferlow

hodiola rosea (Golden root) is an plant of the Crassulaceae family indigenous to the cold regions of the world such as Arctic regions of Eastern Siberia, the Rocky mountains, mountains of Central Asia, the mountainous parts of Europe.

The perennial plant grows in areas up to 2280 meters elevation, having separate female and male plants, shoots may reach 5 to 35cm in height. Because of its extraordinary anti-stress and positive mood enhancing properties the extract is one of the most popular phytomedicines in Europe and is becoming increasingly popular in North America. The release of information related to human clinical studies from the former Soviet Union has dramatically increased the interest in this medicinal plant. Rhodiola is included among a class of plant derivatives called adaptogens, which differs from stimulants such as nicotine and amphetamine. Adaptogens have less efficacy and different physiological effects than stimulants, they are absent from mainstream medicine, but are popular in energy drinks. Pilot studies in humans showed it improves physical and mental performance, and may reduce fatigue. In Russia and Scandinavia it has been used for centuries to cope with the cold Siberian climate and stressful life. History of Rhodiola rosea (Golden root) The Golden root has a long history in the promotion of good health and longevity. In Siberia, people still say “Those who drink Rhodiola tea will live more than 100 years old.” In 1931, Russian botanist and nutritionist Dr. L. Utkin, discovered that Golden root increases sexual potency and his research coincides with Siberian folk tradition where it was given to couples prior to marriage to assist in the birth of children. Clinical Research It is known in medical professions that the effects of excessive stress in modern life leads to chronic states of fatigue-related depression and other health problems and it is a fact that about 80% of all illness can be traced back to stress and depression. According to the American Academy of Family and Physicians and Rus8 Herbal Collective Aug,’17

Rhodiola rosea (golden root) is an important adaptogen

sian Department of Family Care about 2/3 of all office/ doctors visits are related to stress-induced illnesses. For centuries people around the world have been using herbal remedies – according to statistics 80% of the world population of seven billion = 5.6 billion people are still using herbal remedies and homeopathy for healing – to help their bodies dealing with effects of stress. Ancient cultures had figured out that adaptogenic herbs are the answer long before we in the Western world adapted to it! Golden root is probably the least known adaptogen in the West, and yet the most impressive of all and in several double blind clinical trials with placebo controls provide strong evidence that the extract possesses positive mood enhancing and anti-stress properties with no detectable levels of toxicity! The extract has been shown to have a positive influence on the higher nervous system, it does increase attention span, memory, improves mental stability and primarily enhances the qualitative indicators of performed work by increases strength and mobility. Rhodiola's ability to help the body adapt to stress may lie in its ability to enhance the level of serotonin, dopamine and other brain neurotransmitters. Serotonin and dopamine are normally broken down by the enzyme, catechol-O-methyl transferase (COMT). Active compounds extracted from Rhodiola have shown to inhibit the activity of COMT. Prominent Soviet scientists Prof.Saratikov and Marina have shown that Golden root can increase the level of neurotransmitters by 30% and decrease COMT activity by 60%.

for Stress Relief Rhodiola rosea contain a variety of compounds that may contribute to its effects, including the class of rosavins that includes rosavin, rosarin, and rosin. Several studies have suggested that the most active components are likely to be the rhodioloside and tyrosol showing synergistic effects when a fixed combination of rhodioloside, rosavin and rosin is used. Rhodiola's proven effectiveness for depression has led Russian scientists to use it in combination with anti-depressants. Patients intellectual and physical levels increased while the length of hospital stays and negative side effects associated with tricylic anti-depressants decreased. Nature' gift for healthy weight management 30 years of Soviet research provides fascinating evidence that the administration of Rhodiola rosea stimulates the fat release from adipose tissue. Golden root extracts in combination with daily exercises is an extremely effective method of weight management. Reducing fat accumulated in adipose tissue is very difficult, however, fat stored there can be mobilized by the action of a special type of enzyme known as hormone sensitive lipase. Researcher have been looking for many years for natural substances that could activate the release of that from adipose tissue, Golden root is the answer. Enhance Performance & Energy Production According to information released by the Moscow Institute of Sport and Physical Culture, Russia's leading centre for athletic performance research Rhodiola rosea extract provides a safe, powerful boost for the physically active from superbly conditioned Olympic athletes to recreational exerciser. Golden root extract can help oxygenate the brain as well as the muscles and gives a person a dramatic boost in energy levels. On the basis of positive results from over a decade of clinical trials, in 1975 the Pharmacological Committee of the USSR Ministry of Health authorized for medical use and commercial production an Rhodiola rosea extract. Conclusion Apparently, the increased popularity of Rhodiola rosea makes it a target for ineffective substitutes being sold to an unsuspecting public since the public does not yet fully understand that only true Golden root extract which contains sufficient standardized levels of it unique active ingredients: rosawin, rosin and rosarin,

Rhodiola, from 9 can insure that they will get an efficacious form that really does work! Despite its rising popularity, public education is still in its infancy, but has lately improved. Misinformation typically used to justify substitution & adulteration makes it difficult for consumers to get the benefits they expect and deserve from the phytomedicines like Golden root. Given that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” professionals and retailers alike should be wary of claims when recommending and stocking product. If in doubt, check the research. Aloe Vera for Eczema and Much More

A

loe vera is reputed to have amazing effects on the human body. It has been called a miracle plant for centuries by many cultures. So there is much research that proves its’ incredible array of health benefits. But not every aloe plant has benefits though. Of the more than 250 different species of aloe, only 4 have been recognized as being of nutritional value to humans and animals. Of these four, Aloe Barbadensis Miller is significantly the most effective. Pro Ma, producers of aloe vera products, recognized this from the beginning and use only specially grown aloe of this type in all of its skin care and nutritional products. Aloe research has shown that the gel of the interior of the leaf contains more than 200 different substances. Dr. Davis, a physiologist at the University of Pennsylvania, had done research on aloe since the early 1970s. “Aloe contains the greatest number of active substances of any plant I’ve looked at,” she says. Dr. Ivan Danhof, and Dr. Robert Davis, amongst others, have identified some of the essential constituents of aloe that gives its healing properties. Polysaccharides of various types, chromones, auxin, sterols and gibberellin are just a few of the more than 200 substances that give aloe its amazing properties. The only way to ensure that all these important substances are present in any aloe product is to use the gel in its entirety. This will ensure that all the properties of aloe remain intact and undiminished. Research has shown that concentration or dehydration of aloe products affects the performance and properties of aloe adversely. Pro-Ma addressed this problem by using only hand filleted aloe gel, which ensures the aloe is not denatured or altered in any way. This important step maintains all the important properties aloe has to offer us. 12

This person’s excema improved in 12 hours after a specific aloe vera regime. Contact article contributor for more details.

What are some of these properties? Scientists have reported aloe’s effectiveness in numerous areas. Dr. Robert Davis reported that the use of aloe vera gel on incision wounds in animal research improves the healing rate of the wound by 130%. He aloe noted that the polysaccharides in aloe have different activities in the human body depending on the length of the polysaccharide chain. Both he and numerous other researchers, including Dr. Ivan Danhof, observed that long chain or big polysaccharides have immune stimulatory properties, whereas the shorter chain polysaccharides have anti-inflammatory properties. Dr. Davis also noted that these properties are not just dependent on polysaccharide levels or presence. All the other components inherent in aloe such as growth factors, amino acids, glycoproteins such as aloctin A, gibberellin, auxin and minerals such as zinc, all play an integral part in the effectiveness in aloe vera use.

Immune Stimulation Some of the properties include immune stimulation and modulation. This means that if your immune function is low, aloe will increase it and if your immune system is over stimulated as in autoim-

mune conditions like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis, it will modulate or reduce the activity of the immune response. If this wasn’t enough, aloe will also enhance wound healing, has anti-tumor activity and reduces symptoms associated with arthritis and diabetes. Aloe vera also reduces the detrimental effects of steroidal drug therapy, while at the same time increasing the absorption rate and positive properties of the drug. Aloe vera also hydrates the skin and allows other topically used drugs and ointments to be more fully absorbed. All in all, aloe vera is a miracle plant which is now starting to be fully understood. From the start Pro-Ma understood the importance of using the entire spectrum of nutrients inherent in aloe vera gel. This natural and wholesome product will continue to grow in popularity and is now starting to take its place as one of the most valuable gifts that nature has to offer. Check Your Natural Health Training Here

I

nterest in natural health education is exploding. Now is the time to consider educational workshops and programs for fall. There are so many options available. A person can study nutrition, herbalism, Bach flower remedies, aromatherapy, homeopathy, naturopathy, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), acupuncture, chiropractic care, reflexology, reiki, cranio sacral therapy, massage and much more. Consider Where to Start Many people often get started after using a form of natural healing that worked for them. Others study new modalities to add to their existing practice, while some choose a field of study that appeals to them the most. Check Associations and Designations Many modalities such as chiropractors, nutritionists, herbalists and naturopaths have associations. In Canada one can get training and designation as a Certified Natural Health Practitioner (CNHP) and get designated through the Canadian Examining Board of Health Care Practitioners. In the U.S. students are recognized for membership by the American Association of Drugless Practitioners. The Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA) also offers a Certified Natural Products Advisor Course The course is distance learning for retail staff and sales reps with credible knowledge in the health food industry. The Natural Health Practitioners of Canada, NHPC, provides support and insurance for providers in various modalities such as shiatsu, rolfing, Bowen technique, healing touch, trager, etc. It does not cover more recognized modalities such as Bach flower therapies, chiropractic, herbalism, homeopathy, naturopathy and TCM which have their own associations and training. Training in Bach flower therapies is often offered through certified practitioners such as Sarah Brune, who is a Bach Flower Registered Practitioner (BFRP) who is offering training in September and October (see page 6). 16

Choose and Commit Do your research through the various educational trainings offered – whether it’s an institution or through workshops. With the internet distance education is now offered online compared to correspondence course offered years ago. Students can often choose between online and hands-on learning, depending on the modality offered. Depending where you live, practitioners can often get referrals through associations and other networks and provide extended medical coverage. In Canada, supplementary health benefits are provided for some services and for some individuals. It often depends on the province one lives in. In B.C supplementary services cover: acupuncture, chiropractic, massage therapy, naturopathy, physical therapy and non-surgical podiatry. It is restricted to 10 visits each calendar year. Those who may be eligible for supplementary benefits through the Medical Services Plan(MSP) include: MSP premium assistance recipients, income assistance recipients, convention refugees, inmates of B.C. Correctional Facilities, residents in long term care receiving the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), Individuals enrolled with MSP through the At Home Program, Individual enrolled with MSP as mental health clients and First National individuals with valid B.C. Medical Plan coverage through the First Nations Health Authority.

Homeopathy-Goes Beyond Treating Symptoms

T

he underlying principle of homeopathy is also at the heart of modern physiology. It is commonly understood in medicine today that symptoms are not just something “wrong” with the body but, rather, they represent the efforts of the body to defend and heal itself from a variety of infective agents and/or stresses. The body creates fever, inflammation, pain, cough, discharge, or whatever is necessary in order to defend and heal self. While those symptoms represent the body’s best efforts to heal, they are not always successful in doing so. The word symptom is defined as “any phenomenon or circumstance accompanying something and serving as evidence of it.”

ing, not just symptom suppression. There is a common tendency for physicians to diagnose specific disease states and there is a similar desire among patients for this determination. However, conventional medical diagnosis tends to assume that most disease is localized to a specific part of the body. Heart disease is considered to be a heart problem, headaches are of the head, skin disease is of the skin, and so on. For instance, a chronic skin disease is rarely treated topically by homeopaths in looking for a cure. The bottom line is that the vast majority of medical treatments tend to be directed at a specific symptom, a localized condition, or a single physiological process.

Symptoms can be a sign or signal of something else and treating them doesn’t necessarily change that something else. Just because a drug gets rid of a symptom does not mean that the person is cured. Drugs that suppress or inhibit a symptom tend to provide only a guise of success and sometimes can drive the disease deeper into the body, leading to a more serious disease. Many homeopaths believe that this observation about symptom and disease suppression may explain why people today are experiencing more serious chronic illnesses at earlier and earlier ages and why there is such an epidemic of mental illness (physical disease is suppressed deeply enough that the disease is pushed into the pysche). Because symptoms represent the best efforts of our body in its defense against infection or stress, it makes sense to utilize medicines that help mimic these defense processes rather than inhibit or suppress them. The beauty of the homeopathic principle of similars is that a respect for the body’s wisdom is inherent within it, thereby utilizing and optimizing the significant self-healing and self-regulating powers of the body. Once one recognizes that symptoms are important and useful defenses of the body, it makes less sense to use drugs that inhibit or suppress this wisdom of the body. Instead it makes sense to use medicines to strengthen the body’s own defense system so that the body can more effectively heal itself. Homeopaths seek to find a medicine that will mimic the wisdom of the body to initiate real heal-

The homeopaths’ appreciation for understanding and treating the more complex syndrome (group of symptoms) of the person explains why homeopaths assert that there is rarely a single medicine that can cure everyone with a specific disease. Thus, when one asks a homeopath what treatment is for this or that disease, the usual answer is neither simple nor direct. Of course, there are commonly indicated homeopathic remedies for people with specific syndromes that include certain diseased states but individualization distinguishes between them. Instead, homeopaths emphasize that treatment is individualized according to the person’s overall syndrome. When homeopaths see patients they obtain the unique and detailed health history of each patient, and they seek to find a remedy (usually plant, mineral or animal based) that would cause a similar syndrome of symptoms that the patient is experiencing.
