Cleanse the Body, Heal the Heart Welcome to our second online edition of the Herbal Collective. I enjoy reaching out to our readers through the power of the internet and of course in print as well to our wonderful Publisher’s Note advertising sponsors and our subscribers. In this issue we look at heart health and cleansing the body as February is heart month and we are heading into spring with March, the perfect time to consider a cleanse. I often talk to people who have done cleanses as well as those who haven’t but are thinking about it. I believe a cleanse can really help set back the aging process as it cleans toxins from the body that could lead to chronic conditions. The results are so worth it. Having good digestive health affects our health and we tend to think what we eat is most important. But author Van Clayton Powel will tell you that it’s how you eat that makes a big difference. You can read about him and his book describing this in our people profile. Enzymes are a key part of the picture in digestive health as well as you will learn in the article by Louis Hoolaeff who describes them as the life force of the body. Interestingly, cleansing our body also ties in with the
health of our heart as you will see in the article on ‘How Emotions Affect the Heart.’ Holding onto emotions of anger and frustration definitely affect the heart. Plant essences can help with this. Another way to clear your heart and cleanse is to simply clear the clutter from your home and life. It makes a big difference in how you feel. Sometimes we get overwhelmed with the task or are affected by other emotions so plant essences can help with this as well as you will read in the article by Sarah Brune. Going back to heart health, it’s important to know about two very good herbs for that. Herbalist Don Ollsin explains the benefits of hawthorn and motherwort. Finally, make sure you check out the article on brain health and the 5 Tips to Improve Memory. You will discover how important it is to fast for 12 hours and this also ties in with what Powel talks about in his book. I hope you enjoy this issue. I am always open to feedback so feel free to email me anytime at info@herbalcollective.ca. We also welcome letters to the editor so if you want to send your email as a letter for publication please let me know. Drop by our site at www.herbalcollective.ca and our facebook page. We’d love to hear from you.

The Silk Worm’s Gift to Mankind By Barrie Carlsen Serrapeptase, also known as Serratia Peptidase, was lli first discovered in Japan when entomologists researching the life processes of the silk worm discovered that an enzyme produced by bacteria in the intestine of the worm (Serratia Peptisdase) was responsible for the worms ability to dissolve a hole in the cocoon and to allow the silk worm moth to escape its self-made prison and to continue its life cycle. Researchers discovered that the cocoon is made from a fibre (fibrin) and that this fibre is very similar to the fibrous “plaque” that builds up in the human vascular system. Some unknown researcher reasoned that if this highly specialized enzyme can dissolve the cocoon fibrin without damaging other cells in the silk worm’s body, then perhaps it could safely dissolve the fibrin that builds up in the human body. After years of research and testing it was proved that Serrapeptase indeed safely dissolves the plaque buildup in the arteries of those with CHD and it became an established treatment for those with CHD.
Serrapeptase: A Natural Anti-Inflammatory Clinical studies also show that Serrapeptase induces fibrinolytic, anti-inflammatory and anti-edemic (prevents swelling and fluid retention) activity in a number of tissues, and that its anti-inflammatory effects are superior to other proteolytic enzymes. Besides reducing inflammation, one of Serrapeptase most profound benefits is reduction of pain, due to its ability to block the release of pain-inducing amines from inflamed tissues. Physicians throughout Asia and Europe have recognized the anti-inflammatory and pain-blocking benefits of this naturally occurring substance and are using it in treatment as an alternative to salicylates, ibuprofen and other NSAIDs.
Serrapeptase is thought to work in three ways: • It may reduce inflammation by thinning the fluids formed from injury, and facilitating the fluid's drainage. This in turn, also speeds tissue repair. • It may help alleviate pain by inhibiting the release of 4

The silkworm moth. Photo contributed pain-inducing amines called bradykinin. • It may enhance cardiovascular health by breaking down the protein by-products of blood coagulation called fibrin. Conveniently, Serrapeptase is able to dissolve the fibrin and other dead or damaged tissue without harming living tissue. This could enable the dissolution of atherosclerotic plaques without causing any harm to the inside of the arteries. Serrapeptase is being used as a highly effective support to antibiotics in many countries. It treats inflammatory disorders by not only fighting inflammation, but also by relieving pain and swelling, improving recovery time and stimulating the immune system. Serrapeptase has a "scavenging" effect. It helps remove the heavy metals through which the body releases toxins and hence modulates the immune system, addresses hormonal imbalances and speeds wound and tissue repair time. Commercially, Serrapeptase is produced from the strain of bacteria originally found in the silk worm’s intestinal tract. This process is similar to that of producing yogurt. No silk worm is used in the process We can thank Mother Nature for this remarkable gift to mankind’s health and wellbeing. 5 Tips to Improve Immunity in Late Winter “Winter, a lingering season, is a time to gather golden moments, embark upon a sentimental journey, and enjoy every idle hour. “ The winter season holds the perfect antidote to the fastpaced mobility of the summer and fall. This is a time to rest, reflect, hold space, vision, hibernate, withdraw some of our outwardly-focused energy and redirect it inward. Winter season also brings low temperatures, freezing rain and snow, a significant drop in humidity and dry cold winds in most parts of the country. All media news and health warnings make winter a season of flu, colds and coughs, contagious diseases. There is a overall sense of heaviness, increased moisture due to rain or snow and a slow feeling that sends many animals into hibernation. These are all qualities shared by Kapha dosha, which is why winter could be considered a Kapha season in our beautiful British Columbia but in the rest of the Canada where the climate is exceptionally cold and dry, Vata will also be a strong component to take into account. According to Ayurveda, winter is the best season to strengthen and improve immunity. Infections and colds are the results of a weak immune system. Viruses are seeds that look for fertile land, such as a weakened body, to take root. This season, let us adopt a routine that allows you to relish rather than resent the darkness and the quiet. 1. One reason that winter is a good season for building immunity is that the digestion is strongest in cold weather. The body requires more fuel to stay warm and healthy in the winter months and the cold weather ignites digestive fires deep into the core of the body. Our bodies therefore crave a more substantial, nutritive diet at this time of year. May be that is the reason crave for carb containing comfort foods loaded with fats and sugars ! The cold weather can decrease digestive Agni (fires) so we need to use spices to improve the digestion. Some of the immune boosting spices are: cumin, fennel, coriander, turmeric, ginger, and black pepper. 2. Our skin, the organ that acts as a barrier between our bodies and the external environment, generally takes the brunt of the harsh weather. Winter is actually the best time of year to nourish the skin, because it is dryer and more receptive in winter. The skin is less absorbent in warmer weather as it is in detoxifying mode. Daily Abhayanga with Kapha Oil or Dhanvantara oil will keep our skin healthy and vibrant whole winter.
Padmashri Kapha Oil is a classical oil called Karpooradi Tailam. It is prepared with Kapha reducing herbs like Ajwain, Arjuna, Cardamom and Camphor. Dhanvatara Oil is a potent earthy oil containing 28 herbs like Ashwagandha, Triphala, Bala and fenugreek. It rejuvenates the body and skin and increases immunity. 3. At the first sign of a cold or flu take extra measures. Get plenty of rest, slow down and listen to your body. Your recovery time will be shorter. Drink lots of warm water or herbal teas to help flush toxins from the lungs. Eat wholesome, nutritious, easily digestible foods such as cooked leafy green vegetables, fresh fruits and vegetable soups. Avoid heavy foods like meat, dairy, oils, nut butters and sweets. 4. Immune boosting lifestyle with yoga and exercise: An invigorating and expansive yoga practice this winter can be surprisingly supportive of your overall wellbeing. Taking up a winter-specific activity might help replace the feelings of winter blues. We’re often less active in wintertime. Yet exercise is a known mood enhancer, raising the brain’s levels of serotonin and endorphin. Sports such as skiing, snowboarding and ice skating provide that much-needed adrenaline rush that we can't get from couch surfing, with the added bonus of two of the greatest natural mood elevators: exercise and the great outdoors. 5. Natures Immune Booster : Sewanti Holy Basil Plus In keeping with the guidelines of Ayurvedic classical formulations, the pharmacological and phytochemists team at Sewanti Ayurvedic series has combined the healing properties of Holy Basil in synergy with other important Ayurvedic herbs to enhance bioavailability of Holy Basil and stimulate its activity in the formulation. These herbs include Ashwagandha, Karanja, Chitraka, Amalaki and Haridra. Holy Basil Plus helps to strengthen the digestive fire, balance the production of mucus and enhance the bioavailability and circulation of vital nutrients. Neelam Toprani is the formulator of Sewanti herbal remedies and Padmashri massage oils, www.sewanti. com. Healing the Heart with Herbs By Don Ollsin Cardiovascular diseases are still the leading cause of death in the United States and most Western countries. Heart disease or atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, heart failure, heart attacks and strokes take the lives of millions of people every year. Although there may be a genetic predisposition towards developing a cardiovascular disorder, one’s lifestyle, nutrition and bad habits play the most important role in triggering these medical problems. Lack of green vegetables (and herbs) in one’s diet, not enough physical exercise, poor control of blood sugar in diabetics, smoking, excess alcohol and stress can accumulate and cause abnormalities that over time may develop into a cardiovascular disease. Most people are prescribed pharmaceuticals to deal with a newly diagnosed heart problem, and few know that there are many natural remedy alternatives that live and grow on our planet. Herbs contain thousands of biologically active substances and are proven to be beneficial in the overcoming and prevention of many health problems and disorders, and many people have yet to discover their potential applications.
and even thousands of components, chemists and medical researchers have yet to discover the properties and biological effects of all of them.
What Are The Main Heart Problems That May Be Prevented Through Lifestyle Adjustments And Herbs? Strokes and heart attacks are the most feared cardiovascular problems because they are a leading cause of death, especially among the elderly. They may be caused by obstructions that are created as a result of abnormal cholesterol buildup in the walls of arteries located in the heart and the brain. High cholesterol levels are the main risk factor that makes an individual vulnerable to heart disease.

Scientists Have Not Yet Isolated All Healthy Components That Exist In Herbs Although skeptics and conventional medicine followers are hesitant to accept the utility of herbs when it comes to maintaining heart health and preventing cardiovascular disease, the plants contain many undiscovered secrets that can be used to achieve physical and mental well-being. Many people don’t know that many drugs have been developed by isolating biologically active components found in herbs like aspirin from the Willow Tree. However, herbs may contain hundreds 6

Hawthorn, an herb which is considered a natural “doctor” for your heart, acts on many levels to improve and preserve heart health, including: * Lowering of blood cholesterol level in a gentle manner. Unlike herbal remedies, statins, which are drugs used to lower cholesterol, have multiple side effects and many heart patients are not
compliant with medication treatment. * Stabilizing the collagen that is found in the structure of the heart muscle. It offers strength and lexibility to your heart, and helps adapt to variable blood pumping demands. * Has a mild but consistent blood pressure lowering effect. * Possesses antioxidant properties, which prevents heart cell damage caused by toxins and free radicals. * Enhances the energetic metabolism of the heart and causes a dilation of coronary blood vessels, which translates into more oxygen and nutrientrich blood that nourishes your heart. High blood pressure, and elevated heart rate, also known as palpitations, are also frequently encountered cardiovascular complaints.
* Enhancing the energy levels of the heart, also known as a tonic effect. * Relieving palpitations, exerting a calming effect and dilating the blood vessels in the heart for an enhanced blood supply. Natural herbs are a great addition to existing methods of preserving heart health, such as a low-cholesterol, high-vitamin diet, regular exercise, smoking cessation and relaxation. Don’t hesitate to visit http://herbalhealingpathway. com/ for a comprehensive online herbal program that can help strengthen your health in many areas and achieve physical and mental well-being. People Profile
You Are Not What You Eat
By Marilyn Zink e’ve all heard the saying ‘you are what you eat.’ But now the author of a new book is saying it’s not only what you eat but also how you eat. Van Clayton Powel has written ‘You Are NOT What You Eat – Better Digestive Health in 7 Simple Steps’, which explains how to eat to enhance digestion based on his experiences and training in both the Western medical model as a nurse supervisor, and in the ancient medical systems of Asia, where he studied for years.
W
Powel says it was a combination of these experiences along with winning his own battle with chronic digestive problems that inspired him to write the book, which has received early praise and is gaining in popularity. "I had a growing list of food sensitivities," says Powel, "I couldn’t eat wheat, dairy, chocolate, soy … the world was getting smaller and smaller because I couldn’t eat all these different foods. And it was my studies in Japan and India that taught me the importance of changing 8
and other problems that are becoming so prevalent. " Powel says people then often blame food for the sensitivity and swear off eating it, "But I’m convinced in many cases it’s not the food that’s the problem, it’s the damaged digestive system. And once it heals, the problems usually start to disappear.” he says. He says his own digestive issues stemmed from years of harmful eating habits and that there are some simple things people can do right now to help heal their digestive system.

how I ate and eventually led to my full recovery. Today I can eat anything I want again." Powel says in the East they think of the body as a garden that is really good at taking care of itself as long as it's nurtured adequately. And part of that nurturing is eating in a way that enhances digestion. But in the West we tend to treat the body like a machine and don't even think about the negative impact Herbal Collective Feb/March, 2013
of common habits like eating too often, drinking too much fluid with meals, eating on the run, or eating at the wrong time. “Every single cell in your body relies on digestion for its survival,” he says. “So if your digestion isn't working properly, you're in trouble, no matter how nutritious your diet. And once improperly-digested food starts entering the bloodstream, we see the kind of food sensitivities
Continual 'grazing' or snacking can be a big problem, says Powel, who points to one study of nearly 7,000 subjects that found not eating between meals was one of 7 lifestyle factors that promote longevity. "The stomach functions best dealing with one meal at a time," Powel says, and in the book he describes another study that found snacking after a meal can dramatically slow down stomach emptying: “In one subject, snacking after a meal kept the meal in
the stomach over 13 hours longer." Powel pointed out he’s not saying people should never eat between meals, but they should let the previous food clear the
temperature fluid with a meal, and minimal fluids for the first hour after a meal. (Mind you, he also points out there is a whole section in his book on how to break all the rules and enjoy it!)
Avoid Eating Under Stress Stress turns off digestion, leads to eating more calories, less chewing, etc., so Powel suggests you find a relaxed setting to eat, sit down, and definitely turn off your phone. stomach before putting more food in, and he suggests the following test:
Sip Test Sip about 1/4 cup of warm water or carbonated water and you'll get a bit of a belch. If there is any taste or smell of food in the belch, then food is still in your stomach and you should wait before eating more. (Any natural belch will tell you the same thing.)
Fluid Intake Excessive fluids around meal times can interfere with the chemical and mechanical function of the stomach, says Powel, who recommends no fluids for about 30 minutes before a meal , about 1/2 cup room-
Late Night Eating Powel says studies show shift workers are more prone to digestive disorders and a range of other diseases, something he experienced working swing shifts as a psychiatric nurse. "I kept getting colds for the first six months or so, then changed how I ate and stopped getting colds." He recommends eating your last meal at least 3 hours before bed. “Our bodies were designed to heal and rejuvenate while we sleep, not digest food. And one of the reasons is because the lymphatic system doesn’t function as well when we’re sleeping."
Herbs Powel references herbs in his book that enhance
the liver and kidney functions. He also has a simple home cleanse that readers can follow. “I think the cleanse is an important part of the program,” he says noting there are fruits, vegetables, protein powders like rice and whey, and supplements that assist people. “I definitely take a protein supplement during my own cleanse,” says Powel. “I also take a liver tonic with milk thistle, dandelion root & turmeric.” He says he does the cleanse twice a year and also takes an antioxidant
blend and probiotics at that time. “I think it’s a great time to replenish the intestinal flora,” says Powel. “But I also think it's important to be monitored by a health care professional when taking any supplements, otherwise it's trial and error.” He pointed out that his supplement protocol is what works for him and is covered in the book but each person should look at their own needs and consult a naturopath or herbalist to find what works for them.
Is Your Digestion Good? Powel says his digestion is still improving after the changes he’s made and noted there are telltale signs to watch for to determine an improved digestion. In addition to the common signs and symptoms he describes in his book, he also suggests watching the following:
Tongue Watch the tongue as it reflects what is going on in the digestive system. The more of a coating on the tongue, the more digestive problems one has. A person with healthy digestion has a light red tongue with a clear coating.
Fingernails Finger nails are a good indicator of long-term digestive health. Fingernails that are brittle, or with ridges, cracks, white spots or weird shapes to the cuticles can be an indicator of poor digestion and absorption. Get more from Powel’s book at

Detox Tea ■2 inch knob of ginger or substitute 2 tsp ginger powder ■2-3 inch piece of turmeric root or substitute 2 tsp turmeric powder ■1-2 dashes of cayenne powder (or you could juice 1/2 a habanero or jalapeño pepper) ■4 organic lemons (3 for juicing and 1 for slicing as a garnish) ■3 droppers vanilla stevia ■2 quarts water
This amazing detox tea from Linda Wagner will have you feeling better in no time. It uses herbs and spices of ginger, turmeric and cayenne that are anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial and much more.
In a juicer, juice your ginger root, turmeric, and 3 lemons. I recommend using Breville brand juicers. I love Breville because they are easy to use, easy to clean, and great quality! In a large pitcher add your juice to about 2 quarts of water, a couple droppers of vanilla stevia to taste, a couple dashes of cayenne and your thinly cut lemon slices. Mix well with a wooden spoon and adjust flavors to taste. Let sit for about 10 mins before serving to let the flavors blend. Will last about 5 days in the fridge. You can enjoy it room temperature or over ice. This tea is sweet, tangy and very spicy! Be ready, it’s got some serious kick!! But it always helps me “get back to normal” after travelling, says Linda. I tend to get puffy and retain water when I travel and this tea helps flush out my lymphatic system and reduce swelling. I absolutely love it and I hope you do too! This great recipe is provided by Linda Wagner at http://lindawagner.net/blog/2012/02/detox-tea-recipe/

Enzymes are our Life Force By Louis Hoolaeff HR HC ACS The only solution to our present health crisis is food enzymes. The study of food enzymes in nutrition and human health has been a 'sore eye' to both scientists and nutritionists alike. Much study was done in the early years but for some reason was not brought to light. Only now we see some glimpses of the need of food enzymes for maintaining and regaining our health. We will attempt to bring out the importance of enzymes as enzymes are the life force of our body. Without the life energy of enzymes we would be nothing more than a pile of lifeless chemical substances— protein, minerals, vitamins and water. In maintaining health, enzymes and
only enzymes do the actual work. They are what we call in metabolism, the body's labor force.
What are ENZYMES? Enzymes are the key to radiance, longevity, and youth. According to Dr. Edward Howell, the grandfather of enzyme therapy, an enzyme is “…a protein molecule with electricity running through it…”. We age and get sick because we run out of enzymes. Each one of us is given a limited supply of bodily enzyme energy at birth. This supply, like the energy supply in our new battery, has to last a lifetime. The faster we use up our enzyme supply-- the shorter our life.
A great deal of our enzyme energy is wasted haphazardly throughout life. The habit of cooking our food (several degrees of heat above our body temperature destroys enzymes) and eating it processed with chemicals; and the use of alcohol, drugs, medicines, vaccinations and junk food all draw out tremendous quantities of enzymes from our limited supply. Frequent colds, fevers and exposure to extreme temperatures also deplete the supply. Even thinking requires enzyme activity. A body in such a weakened, enzyme-deficient state is a prime target for cancer, obesity, heart disease and practically all other degenerative problems. Such abuse often ends up

in the tragedy of suffering and death at middle age. Today, even young children suffer from a lack of enzymes as we see many with childhood diseases. People can live healthier and longer by guarding against loss of this precious life force (energy) as shown by wild animals in nature, who statistically outlive people and die of only a handful of natural causes. Bodily enzyme depletion and aging go hand in hand in both laboratory animals and humans. There is a crippled attempt of modern medicine to heal disease and its failure to attack the root of the problem. So what can we do? One fatal process that may be the cause of all humanity's bodily ills is the cooking of food. Prolonged heat destroys 100% of enzymes in food. We must replendesh those enzymes by adding more raw foods into our diet and unless grown on fertile soil, raw foods can also be low in enzymes. Especially the imported foods that are raised on depleted soils, harvested unripened and transported over long distances. Supplementation of plant enzymes is then essential for us to maintain and regain our health. Larger quantities of enzyme supplementation has also been proven to help eradicate many health challenges such as cancer, arthritis, obesity, colitis and many other illnesses. When supplementing, care has to be taken that enzyme supplements must be plant based, of the highest quality, contain no fillers and must not be destroyed by the high acid of the stomach in order to be effective. Minerals are required before vitamins can be effective ... and before minerals are utilized we need utilizable protein and for protein to be effective we need enzymes. The heat of cooking destroys all enzymes! How to
CLEANSE Your Body with HERBS
By Marilyn Zink
M
any people are interested in doing an herbal cleanse to give their bodies a ‘tune-up’ for spring. The results are often fantastic but the effects of a cleanse are what concern people. In other words, they worry that a cleanse might make them feel awful or be the catalyst for an illness like a cold or flu. Before I answer that question, the first thing to consider is how toxic one’s body is. (See sidebar for details) Now that you are aware of the signs of a toxic body you can look for an herbal cleanse that is right for you. As someone who has done herbal cleanses in the past, I want you to know there are certain key issues to be aware of. The more toxic you are, the stronger the reaction however this depends on how you do the cleanse.
Healing Crisis This reaction is known as the healing crisis or the Herxheimer reaction – feeling worse before feeling better. It generally lasts no more than a few days and is a sign the process is working. It occurs when the body tries to eliminate toxins at a faster rate than they can be removed, as the body is dumping toxins into the bloodstream for elimination. This is why many people advise starting a cleanse just before a weekend so that you can get plenty of rest. It’s important to drink enough water or herbal tea to flush the body of toxins. Bentonite is one compound that helps absorb toxins so there is less of a reaction.
Preparing for a Cleanse Preparing the body for an herbal cleanse is another way to lessen the reaction. Four days before the cleanse eliminate coffee, 16

alcohol, red meat, fried foods, surgary foods, sodas and simple carbs like cakes and donuts from the diet. Focus on fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy oils, hand healthy smoothies and herbal teas such as the detox tea that is published in this issue. Drink chlorophyll every day as this will help with the colon and digestion.
Herbal Cleansing Products There are many herbal cleansing products on the market which are all designed to draw toxins out of the body and give your organs a tune-up. Some are
Signs of a Toxic Body Our bodies give us indicators all the time, sometimes we choose to ignore them at our peril. The following is an indicator of how toxic a body is, and how important it is to cleanse. *Suffer from frequent colds and flus *Experience digestive problems such as constipation, gas, bloating, diarrhea *Frequent fatigue – often tired, experience afternoon malaise *Frequent headaches or foggy thinking and lack of clarity *Frequent bad breath, coated tongue *Food allergies or sensitivities become more common *Poor or inconsistent bowel movements *Joint pain or back pain *Skin problems such as acne, psoriasis, eczema *Mood changes and irritability *PMS or other menstrual disorders *Trouble sleeping-getting to sleep, staying asleep
for shorter periods such as a few days while others are for a week or longer. Some are whole body cleanses and these cleanse the liver, kidney, colon and blood. Other cleansing products might focus solely on cleaning the colon or killing parasites. If you are on any kind of medication or have a recurring or chronic health issue, it is very important to check with a doctor first to ensure that you make the right choices. Avoid doing an herbal cleanse if you have an acute health condition, are experiencing a cold or flu or recovering from surgery.
Herbs for a Cleanse Herbs used in a cleanse will draw out toxins, kill parasites and remove wastes from the colon.
Herbs that work on the colon may include powerful laxatives like senna and cascara. These may be a bit harsh for some people but there are other herbs such as turkey rhubarb and burdock root that are effective too. Herbs for the liver often include dandelion, milk thistle and burdock root which also work to increase bile flow.
Herbs for the kidneys tend to be diuretics like uva ursi, parsley and juniper berries while hydrangea root, yarrow and birch tea help to dissolve stone. Once you’ve completed a cleanse, you’ll have more energy, greater clarity, sleep better and experience a sense of well being – a feeling that it’s good to be alive. Many people also report that it helps them get started on weight loss. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at info@herbalcollective.ca. Next issue: After the cleanse - building the body. Make Cleansing Easier
Bentonite - Nature’s Miracle Clay With toxins in the air we breathe, water we drink, and food we eat – from second-hand smoke, to chemical pollutants, to pesticides and herbicides – more people are looking to detoxify their bodies to improve their health and energy. Bentonite, a powerful, natural detox agent, helps rid the body of unwanted environmental pollutants. Bentonite uses adsorption, the process by which the surface of a material binds with and holds another material, to draw environmental pollutants from the body as it passes through the digestive tract and out through the colon. In numerous studies, bentonite, a natural volcanic clay mineral, has shown an ability to bind with and remove pesticides, herbicides, pathogenic viruses, and other toxins from the body. Since antiquity, clays have been used as adsorbents for toxins and waste materials, and bentonite is
“king of the clays” in this regard. Its properties have been found beneficial for internal use, for topical use on skin, and even to control pollution. Dry bentonite is made of microscopic platelets in layers. The platelets have a unique mineral composition with positively charged edges and negatively charged flat surfaces. These charges enable it to adsorb, or “chemically grab,” toxins as it passes through the body when mixed with water and swallowed. Since it is not digested or absorbed into the bloodstream, when toxins are bound to the bentonite, they are both excreted through the colon. While dietary fiber products such as psyllium husks are commonly used to scrub the intestinal tract and improve regularity, bentonite can complement psyllium or be used independently to enhance bodily detoxification of environmental pollutants.
The purest bentonite available is specially refined to its most active form from naturally occurring deposits of the highest quality in the U.S. Great Plains area. Through chemical and mechanical action in the intestinal tract, it binds toxins in the stomach, small intestine, and colon. Like a sponge adsorbing toxins in the body, bentonite is specially formulated to offer a huge, toxin-adsorbing surface area greater than 940 square yards per tablespoon serving when mixed with water. That’s equal to over 11 football fields of toxin-adsorbing surface area in a quart bottle. To provide the maximum ability to adsorb and hold toxins in the body before excretion, this particular bentonite provides the optimum ratio of sodium to calcium ions (65-75%), which enhances the chemical binding of toxins to bentonite for bodily excretion.

The Hidden Iceberg of Emotions The incredible gift that we are given at birth is our body with its Hypnotherapy multiple resources and miracles. Many of us give our body's ByGermana Rovinelli wisdom little thought; we might take many of our natural skills for granted. Everything that we have experienced in our lives has given us certain learning and lessons, some delightful and delicious, other experiences may have been difficult to digest and process. The way we process life is unique to us all, the meaning we've given our life experiences impacts our body, mind and emotions without question. Sometimes we've experienced an event that left us conflicted in some way, if by some chance we haven't had the time or the resources to process a conflict or painful event it sits in our body like an invisible iceberg, taking up space and energy. Most of us will pretend (all is well) because that's how many of us get through a difficult event. That works for

us short term. Yet, that internal iceberg could easily bump up against a person, place or thing that reminds the unconscious mind of that unresolved conflict and "ka boom" we're flooded with a tsunami of feelings or reactions that don't make sense. Those feelings, reactions and responses are often due to the frozen emotions and stress that's held within the iceberg. The iceberg is a metaphor for unfinished business, which could be anything that left its mark on your psyche. What seems to happen is "something happens" when we don't have the maturity or life experience to process it. Say a disappointment when you’re a child. The child decides something like, “I’m not good enough, or smart enough, or I'm bad, or something's wrong with me, because I wasn't invited to my best friend’s birthday party.” The child holds those feelings and attaches these meanings to them which become unconscious core beliefs. These become a theme for that person’s life as an adult. It may sound simplistic and it is on one hand and isn't on the other. The subconscious mind is the part of us that holds all of our learning’s and understandings, how we walk, talk, communicate, succeed or not are all hard wired into the subconscious mind. So when someone is stuck and has a pattern of stuckness hypnotherapy is often the locksmith that lets the iceberg melt and sets the adult free from the limiting belief. All of our core beliefs are formed from 0-11 years of age for girls, 0-7 years of age for boys. Which means we may have decided something life altering about ourselves and our self worth or value at an age that we had no business doing so. The end result could become a history of broken relationships, body image and eating disorders, dead end jobs, addictions, codependency, burnout, and the list goes on. The good news is you can clear your psyche of limiting beliefs and behaviors for life by using hypnotherapy. It is the laser of therapies because you bypass the conscious critical assessing mind and go right to the hard drive, the subconscious mind to melt that iceberg. The body and mind feel clear and energized after you've cleaned up an old outdated message. The beauty of this approach is that its brief, 4-8 sessions is sufficient. You understand how powerful and resourceful your subconscious mind is, and you’re free of a burden that used to run your life theme.

5 Tips to Help Improve Your Memory By Richard Isaacson MD and Christopher Ochner PhD Adapted from their new book, "The Alzheimer's Diet"
D
octors have been recommending dietary changes to their patients with such conditions as diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure for years. Soon they may be doing the same for patients suffering from poor memory function. That's because a host of new clinical studies have all found that specific nutritional interventions can significantly improve memory function in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). But you don't have to have Alzheimer's to benefit from the new findings. Eating a brain-healthy diet can also help those of us who, as we age, notice that our mind and memory just aren't as sharp as they used to be. Here are 5 memory-boosting dietary recommendations, based on the latest scientific research and clinical experience treating patients with AD and MCI.
1. Fast 12 hours at night.
If you take advantage of "early bird specials,"--having supper at the diner between 4 and 6 p.m.--you've unwittingly stumbled upon a brain health secret: the 12-hour nightly fast. If you routinely wake up at 6 a.m., try to eat your last meal by 6 p.m. the night before. There is scientific evidence that substances called ketone bodies, which are produced when there are no carbohydrates to burn for fuel, may have a protective effect on brain cells. This means no late-night snacking between dinner and breakfast.
2. Proportion your fat-carb-protein intake.
Every day, make sure you aim for 25% of your total calories from brain-healthy good fat, which includes olive oil, avocados, certain nuts, natural peanut butter, certain seeds, and certain fish. Limit your intake of bad fats (most fast foods, anything hydrogenated, dried coconut, butter, animal fats, milk chocolate and white chocolate, and cheese). Consume 30-45% of your daily calories from complex carbohydrates (fruits, vegetables and whole foods that are low on the glycemic index), and wean yourself off high glycemic carbs (sugars, high22
Herbal Collective Feb/March, 2013
fructose corn syrup, processed cereals and grains, anything baked, whole milk and cream, ice cream and sorbet, crackers, salty snacks such as chips and pretzels, and anything made with white flour). Finally, get the other 25-35% of your calories from high-quality lean protein.
3. Boost your brain nutrients.
Omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA) are essential for memory function and brain health. Most of us don't get enough from dietary sources (such as fish), so consider high-quality, pure fish oil supplements that contain a minimum of 250 mg of DHA in each capsule, and aim for 1,000-1,500 mg of DHA daily if approved by the treating physician. Antioxidant-rich foods are also great for mental function. Some of the best are berries, kale, 100% pure unsweetened cocoa powder, mushrooms, onions, beans, seeds, sardines, herring, trout, and Alaskan wild salmon. Finally, ensure adequate intake of folic acid, B6, B12, and vitamin D in particular. If you're not eating vitaminrich foods on a regular basis, it's good to supplement as needed in pill or liquid form.
4. Eat whole foods, Mediterranean style.
A brain-healthy Mediterranean-style diet includes fruits and vegetables, lean protein (fish, chicken, and turkey); low-fat yogurt and cheeses; and grains, nuts, and seeds. Stay away from red meat and processed foods. Get in the habit of eating whole foods. What are whole foods? They're foods that have only one ingredient--for example, strawberries, broccoli, or barley. If you must have a convenience (manufactured) food on occasion, find those packaged, canned, and frozen items with the fewest ingredients--especially ingredients that you readily recognize and understand.
5. Enjoy coffee and pure cocoa.
Good news for coffee lovers! Caffeinated coffee, 1-3 cups early in the day, may be beneficial over time to your brain. Studies done in Europe over several years demonstrate that men who drank coffee regularly for many years showed less of a decline on memory tests than those who did not drink coffee. More good news: An exciting new study released August 2012 showed that patients with mild cognitive impairment who had regular intake of the strong antioxidants found in pure dark cocoa powder had improvement in memory function.
The Book that Takes Away the Fear of Cancer By Marilyn Zink The author of Never Fear Cancer Again- How to Prevent and Reverse Cancer makes a bold statement in his book. “Curing cancer is about shutting down the cancer process; it is not about shrinking or removing tumours,” states author Raymond Francis, M.Sc. “To shut the cancer process down, certain biochemical processes need to be supported and inhibited. Three critical processes involved in turning cancer on or off are inflammation, apoptosis and angiogenesis. Inflammation is the foundation stone of every chronic disease – including cancer.” I find this statement so telling and so true that right away I was intrigued by this book. The author, who wrote the bestseller Never Be Sick Again, tells how he almost died in 1985 from a series of catastrophic misdiagnosis and mistakes. While we may shiver to hear about it, Francis says it set him on a path to make some amazing discoveries about how to get well and stay well.
Training and Background Trained as a chemist and a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) he was able to access cutting edge science that he says helped him unravel the mystery of his illness. It took two years of hard work and study to restore himself to normal function and Francis, who is now 74, describes himself as having the biological age of someone in his 20s. “Conventional medicine doesn’t attempt to prevent disease, it only springs to action after signs of disease have appeared,” says Francis. “Then instead of curing disease, it addresses only the symptoms and not the causes.”
Memory, continued from page 22 Read more about nutritional interventions for Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment in The Alzheimer's Diet: A Step-by-Step Nutritional Approach for Memory Loss Prevention and Treatment, coauthored by Harvard-trained neurologist Richard Isaacson MD and Christopher Ochner PhD. Dr. Isaacson is an associate professor of clinical neurology specializing in Alzheimer's disease and other memory and cognitive impairments at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Dr. Ochner is a leading researcher on nutrition and the brain at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and the New York Obesity Nutrition Research Center.
This approach of course keeps people sick and increases our ‘disease industry’ that is ‘totally dependent on millions of people getting sick and staying that way.’ In his book Francis helps people understand cancer and outlines six pathways to health or disease. These six are the nutrition pathway, the toxin pathway, the mental pathway, the physical pathway, the genetic pathway and the medical pathway. Disease starts with cellular malfunction which can be prevented by making the right choices on all six pathways.
Pathways to Health Francis goes into detail with a chapter dedicated to each pathway, then goes on to talk about supplements which he says are now a necessity. That means most people will not get all the vitamins and minerals they need even if they eat a healthy diet. Francis says he takes 26 different supplements every day which I find amazing. One supplement he rates as effective against cancer is Vitamin C. He states “A 2006 study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found intravenous vitamin C to be effective in treating cancer and a 2008 study in the Journal of Cellular Physiology found that intravenous vitamin C “plays a crucial role in the suppression of proliferation of several types of cancer.”
Supplements He mentions other supplements such as Quercetin, curcumin (derived from turmeric), CoQ10, enzymes and grapeseed extract. His final chapter is on preventing and reversing cancer and Francis advocates removing the Big Four (sugar, wheat, processed oils and dairy/excess animal protein) out of your life.Juice fresh vegetables daily and eat a plant-based diet. Wow! While some people won’t like this approach others will say he’s preaching to the choir. Of course, the list is longer than I what I mention here. But it’s a start. If you’re at all concerned about cancer, get your hands on this book.
