How to Be a Healthier Man

Publisher’s Note

M

en are often all about steak, suds, sex and

sports. Thinking about natural health lifestyles is often the domain of women who drag their men, sometimes kicking and screaming, into that arena. But things have changed and continue to change. Men are taking up the cause for natural health and are more willing to consider herbs, homeopathy, Chinese medicine, reiki, reflexology and other natural health treatments. It may not mean they’ll give up steak or beer – that doesn’t matter as long as everything is in balance. What does matter is that men are well informed on natural health products and strategies. Typically men have been known to ignore symptoms and put off doing something about their health until they are close to 50 or older. I would to make it clear this isn’t all men. But it has been the pattern in the past. So that’s why this issue is dedicated to men’s health as Father’s Day is this month. There’s an article on Erectile Dysfunction, ED and how to use homeopathy to treat it. You’ll also read about Sexy Healthy Men, (our favorite kind) and another on herbs men like to grow,

(hint –it’s about food and drink). Yes - we know what you guys want. More and better sex! Nothing wrong with that but it starts with being healthy and avoding that beer gut. Too much alcohol can depress testosterone levels and a beer gut can decrease a man’s sex drive. So start with what you can do to be healthy naturally and take action to inform yourself as best you can. You don’t want to find out too late that you should have taken action sooner. With prostate health it’s important to take preventative steps. We also have coverage of the Natural Health Show that just wrapped up this past weekend with an article on No More Anxiety and another on Vibrational Healing. Check out the pictures of our various exhibitors and click on the advertisers links that take you to their website to learn more. Happy Father’s Day! My dad passed last year in March so this will be another Father’s Day without him. Enjoy this issue and share it with your friends! Sincerely

Marilyn Zink

Secrets for Healthy Sexy Men

F

athers Day is just around the corner, and a lot of us will be honouring the men in our life in various ways. June is also men’s health and prostate cancer awareness month. My belief is that a great way to honour Dads is to take care of their health in the best way possible to keep them healthy, happy, and admit it, sexy! Most men know the basic health drill – eat fresh organic food, exercise, don’t smoke, minimize the alcohol consumption, and get an annual physical. But this isn’t enough frankly. There’s still a lot that can be done to hone down better health. Here are a few ‘secrets’ to improving the vitality of that healthy, sexy male in your life. Rev-up your engine in the morning. Far too often, skipping breakfast or grabbing sweet or fatty snacks for the quick fix at the local coffee house leads to fatigue earlier in the day, erratic blood sugar spikes and crashes, and decreases in metabolism. Consuming a healthy dose of good quality protein first thing in the morning, as well as adding fiber, can promote healthier cholesterol levels, regulate digestion, and decrease your risk of diabetes. Enjoy a cup of green. Green tea contains antioxidants called polyphenols, which help boost immunity, can assist in lowering blood pressure, help prevent cancer and Alzheimers disease, and assist with weight loss. 4

Keep the prostate healthy. The prostate gland is an essential part of the male sexual system. Currently, about 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime, and 60% of those will be 65 years or older. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer affecting Canadian men, and running a regularly scheduled PSA via a simple blood test can help detect red flags before the situation gets out of control. Get your hormone levels checked. Unbalanced hormones can lead to unwanted symptoms such as low libido, decrease in muscle mass and strength, increased levels of fatigue, and sleep irregularities. Chances are that if you feel that your ‘joie de vive’ isn’t what it used to be, your hormones may be the culprit. The good news that your Naturopathic Doctor can run a male hormone panel test to measure testosterone levels – the main steroid hormone in men. A number of naturopathic approaches can be

are typically found in carrots, tomatoes, dark chocolate, shellfish, salmon, and lean turkey and chicken. In addition, consuming monounsaturated fats such as those found in avocadoes can assist in healthier cholesterol levels.

taken to address hormone imbalances ranging from herbal medicine, homeopathics, vitamin and mineral supplementation and more. Quit smoking. Cadmium is a major metallic element in cigarettes. It is now known that ingestion of these heavy metals via smoking has a direct negative effect on sperm health. Smoking also damages lung tissue, interferes with circulation, and increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Increasing sexual health, whether for fertility purposes or simply improving vitality for older men, is key to better overall health, so supporting your man in a quit smoking program is beneficial to everyone, all around. Eat your Rainbows. Colour up your meals – every day! Including a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, fish and lean meats adds rich nutrients to your diet, including key elements such as carotenoids, flavonoids, Omega-3 fatty acids, and zinc. These

Laugh More. Yes, there is science behind the old adage that ‘laughter is the best medicine’. Engaging in laughter increases blood flow, circulation and more oxygen flowing the muscles and brain. It reduces stress levels by releasing more endorphins (the ‘feel good’ response) and induces relaxation, both physically and emotionally. So this month, instead of the proverbial gift of tie or slippers, honour the man in your life by supporting the gift of better health. Because a sexier man is a healthier man. Touching Base with Trauma A Homeopathic Perspective

A

new book called Touching Base with Trauma: A Three-Dimensional Homeopathic Perspective, looks at how early influences affect disease and suffering. The book asks fundamental questions such as why personal patterns persist and characterize people throughout their lives. Why are some individuals susceptible to this and unable to escape it in their life journey. How can homeopathy help to resolves cases that seem to be stuck or repeated in self-defeating patterns? Author Elizabeth Adalian looks at how early life occurences mould the brain structures and explores this in addition to traumatic experiences from previous generations. In doing so she looks at how to bring homeopathy to a wider audience to address trauma. This book will be of interest to complementary therapists and homeopaths alike, as well as individuals interested in exploring and healing their own life trauma. Based on research in related fields such as anthropology, epigenetics, literature, neuroscience, philosophy and psychotherapy, the findings are substantiated way beyond the homeopathic lens. In this process, cutting-edge ideas are incorporated in line with current thinking to support healing at the core level for the types of disease conditions presenting today in practice. Elizabeth Adalian has been a practising homeopath for over thirty years. During that time she worked in the former Yugoslavia after the recent war. This experience demonstrated to her that it was not so much the exposure to war that affected individual members of the population but more what they brought to it from their early formative years. On returning to the United Kingdom, after extending her practice to countries including Cyprus, Ethiopia, the Middle

East and North Africa, Elizabeth applied this concept to her patients' cases with notably transformative results in their health.

Prevention is the Key to Health..

4 By Klaus Ferlow

Infection, enlargement and cancer are three common prostate gland problems. Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in Canadian men, accounting for almost 1 in cancer diagnoses.

Statistics reveal that 1 in 8 men will develop prostate cancer during their lifetime’ after age 70 1 in 28 will die from it. These grim statistics should act as a wake-up call for men! Symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland typically appear in men after 50 years of age, but in many cases they develop earlier. An enlarged prostate does not necessarily indicate cancer, but it is a symptom that should not be ignored. It is not uncommon for the prostate gland to become enlarged as a man ages. This condition is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasic (BPH) and its exact cause is not known. Both prostate enlargement and cancer are linked to hormonal changes that occur as men get older (called andropause, and similar to the menopausal changes that occur in women). Statistics show that approximately 75% of males between the ages of 30 and 40 will develop enlargement of the prostate. This increases to 90% of men over the age of 65 years. Early Detection Early detection can make it possible to catch prostate cancer before it spreads to other sites in the body. Careful rectal examination of the prostate gland, however inconvenient it may be, is the simplest and most cost effective way of detecting prostate cancer. It is suggested that every man should have an annual digital rectal examination, beginning at age 40. A blood test to detect elevated levels of a substance called prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is an excellent screening test for prostate cancer. PSA is currently the most valuable “tumour marker’ available to diagnose prostate cancer and 8

evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. A PSA level between 0 and 4 is considered to be within the normal range, and a level over 10 is assumed to indicate cancer until proven otherwise. If a man’s PSA level is found to be high, the test should always be repeated. Here are some symptoms to watch out for. You need to be checked out by your health care practitioner if you experience any of these: • a weak, hesitant or interrupted flow of urine • difficulty in controlling the flow of urine • pain or a straining to maintain a stream of urine • blood in the urine or semen • a sensation of incomplete emptying of the bladder • frequent urination, especially at night • infection of the bladder • pain or stiffness in the hips, thighs and lower back Preventing Prostate Problems Prevention is key to prostate health! Good dietary habits and supplements can help to avoid most problems associated with this potentially troublesome gland. The following are simple guidelines to clean up your diet and environment, and to enrich your nutrition and supplementation. It may not be possible to follow each and every one of these recommendations, but a few alterations to your currnet practices can make a significant difference. Recommendations – Watch Out For: • a weak, hesitant or interrupted flow of urine Try to Avoid: * daily consumption of red meat * Refined sugar, table salt, alcohol, caffeine, tobacco, white bleached-flour products, hydrogenated fats (deep-fried vegetable oils), margarine, processed peanut butter * chemicals added to food (artificial preservatives such as BHA, BHT, MSG, nitrates, nitrites, sodium benzoate) processed meats and sausages, artificial coloring and flavoring and sweeteners (such as aspartame, neotame, Nutrasweet, Equal, Splenda) and saccharine (e.g., Sweet’N’Low) found in diet sodas, diabetic food and other processed low-calorie foods * fluoride, chlorine, aluminum and Teflon cook-

for Prostate Gland ware and amalgam (mercury) dental fillings. Try to Include * zinc, the single most important nutrient for a healthy prostate gland (certified organic pumpkin seeds are an excellent source) * other nutrient-rich seeds such as hemp, flax, sunflower, sesame seeds * unrefined, cold-pressed nut and seed oils such as flax, hemp, walnut, hazelnut, evening primrose, sesame, fish oil (G|MO-free) * certified –organic fresh leafy green vegetables, whole grains and raw wheat germ (includes freshly pressed juices of carrots, green vegetables, wheatgrass, citrus fruit, mangoes) * chickpeas, pistachios, almonds, Brazil nuts, lentils, beans, oatmeal * apples, onions, tomatoes, watermelon, grapefruit, papaya, carrots, sweet potatoes, turnip, corn * additional nutritional supplements such as Vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin B complex, bee pollen, caprilic acid, digestive enzymes, Lactobacilus, acidophilus * beneficial herbal remedies such as saw palmetto, Pygeum africanum, stinging nettle, cat’s claw, Echinacea, ginseng, buchu, goldenseal, uva ursi, chaparral, parsley, sage, St. John’s wort tea and horsetail bath Of all the herbs listed, saw palmetto is the most commonly used for protecting the prostate. Studies have shown saw palmetto to be an effective alternative to prostate surgery. Men using it also experience an increase in sex drive and ability to function sexually. It must be used long term to shrink the prostate, but many men notice an improvement in their symptoms within six weeks. Saw palmetto can be used to increase strength and muscle mass, and it works best when combined with exercise programmes. Good prostate health begins with Prevention! Words of wisdom: ‘A wise man should consider health as the greatest of human blessings and learn how by his thought to derive benefits from his illnesses. Best Herbs for Men to Grow

G

rowing herbs is something that most definitely appeals to women. But do men enjoy growing herbs too? Does he have to be a metrosexual or millenial man to enjoy herbs? Or perhaps your grandpa? The truth is men can enjoy growing herbs as much as women though men prefer herbs they can use. These are herbs like mint, sweet basil, rosemary, cilantro, thyme and sage. Men love these types of herbs because they can be used in foods and drinks – mint is great in mojitos, sweet basil is known for pesto sauce, cilantro is awesome in Mexican food while rosemary, sage and thyme are often used to add flavor to barbecued food, as marinades or in other meat dishes. When it comes to growing herbs, men like to keep it simple. So here is a quick rundown of the best herbs for men to grow. Remember giving him his favorite herbs and use them in special foods on Father’s Day.

Rosemary

Rosemary is great for lamb, pork or steak. It does well in pots and can grow up to five feet so some gardeners use it as a hedge. Plant in well- drained soil with a little bit of fertilizer such as fish. Rosemary likes full sun and a spot against a fence so it is shielded from the wind. Prune regularly, especially after weeding. Fresh is best though it can be dried for later use.

Thyme

Great for pork, chicken and fish, thyme is also excellent for vegetables. Many kinds of thyme are available besides English thyme, the most common type grown. Try lemon thyme for its awesome lemony flavor as it is also the hardiest thyme to grow. Thyme needs full sun and well-drained soil. Thyme can be grown in most zones but it should be covered with leaves or pine boughs to protect it from harsh winter frosts.

Sage

Sage is essential for poultry and pork. It has a pungent flavor and is easy to grow. Start with seeds and cuttings. Make sure it has full sun and sandy soil. Grow as a companion plant to cabbage and carrots but it should never be planted near cucumber as it will ruin the flavor.

Cilantro

This herb needs full sun but light shade in hot weather as it bolts quickly. A favorite in Mexican dishes, cilantro grows easily from seed sown directly in the garden. Add compost or other organic matter and provide plenty of moisture. Pinch back stems to encourage bushier plants and snip flower buds. Watch closely in hot weather – once the plant bolts (develops seed) it will quickly degrade and stop producing leaves. The seeds become coriander which has an entirely different aroma, sweet and toasty.

Mint

Mint grows well in a sun and shade location and prefers moist, rich, loamy soil. It grows easily from seed or propagation. As the roots tend to spread, mint is a great herb for pots or a pot sunk in the garden to prevent runners. It’s best to cut min on a dry day after the morning dew has dried. On damp days there is a risk of the leaves turning black. The well known peppermint tastes great in mohitos and it is often used as a compliment for lamb. Spearmint is also popular or try varieties such as a apple mint, chocolate mint or candy mint.

Sweet Basil

Sweet basil needs full and hot temperatures to grow well as cold soil and air can stunt the growth and cause damage and blackened leaves. Basil prefers a sunny location and grows well in fertile soil with organic matter. It is happy in pots on a sunny windowsill and should be kept well watered, more so than herbs like rosemary or sage. Pinch stems and flower buds to encourage bushy growth as leaving the buds will affect the flavor. Basil can be easily dried but is best used fresh. It flavours soups, stews, tomato dishes, meat, game, fish, egg, herb butters and vinegar. Mint tea, hot or cold or a mint punch are also delicious.

Peanut Sauce for Prawns, Pork, Chicken or Beef ½ cup creamy peanut butter

1 c. chicken broth 2 Tbsp. fresh lime juice 1 ½ Tbsp. packed brown sugar 1 Tbsp. soy sauce 1 tsp. minced garlic 1 Tbsp. chopped peeled fresh ginger ¼ tsp. dried crushed peppers (optional) This peanut sauce is delicious and so versatile. It also works great over vegetable and tofu kebabs. Put peanut butter in pan and add chicken broth gradually, stirring to blend on medium temperature. Add remaining ingredients and cook, stirring frequently until smooth and thick, about five minutes. Cover and refrigerate unless using right away. .

Caribbean BBQ Sauce for Steak or Hamburgers ¼ c. fresh lime juice 2 Tbsp. teriyaki sauce 2 Tbsp. sherry 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 small onion, minced ¾ tsp. ground cinnamon ¼ tsp. ground nutmeg 1 tsp. ginger

In a small jar, stir or shake all ingredients to mix well. Use as a baste for grilling steaks or hamburgers.

Satay Marinade for Prawns, Chicken or Beef 1 c. teriyaki sauce 3 large garlic cloves, minced ¼ c. fresh lime juice 2 Tbsp. finely chopped, peeled fresh ginger 2 Tbsp. packed brown sugar dash Tabasco sauce In a glass dish suitable for marinating, mix all ingredients, stir to dissolve sugar. Add prawns and/ or cubes of chicken or beef, stir to coat. Cover dish, refrigerate, marinate 1-2 hours. When grilling, use the remaining marinade in the dish as a baste.

Homeopathy for Erectile Dysfunction Impotence or Erectile Dysfunction (“ED”) is a condition where there is a problem in getting or maintaining an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. It is important to note here that having a problem once in a while is not considered to be ED. Male sexual arousal is a complex process that involves the brain, hormones, emotions, nerves, muscles and blood vessels. Erectile dysfunction can result from a problem with any of these. Likewise, stress and mental health concerns can cause or worsen ED. Physical problems can contribute to impotence especially as men age. ED can be a symptom of a more serious condition that should be investigated. Because erections require so much blood, vascular problems are a leading cause of ED. Atherosclerosis (narrowing of arteries) can reduce blood flow to the penis. Also, conditions that affect the heart’s ability to pump blood can contribute to ED. ED is common in men who have diabetes. It can stem from problems caused by poor long-term blood sugar control, which damages nerves and blood vessels. Several neurologic conditions can increase the risk for impotence. Nerve damage can affect the brain’s ability to communicate with the reproductive system preventing a man from achieving an erection. Some neurological disorders (such as strokes, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and others) are associated with ED. Low testosterone and abnormal thyroid hormone levels can cause ED. Some prescription medications can contribute to ED as can effects from prostate

surgery. Psychological effects can cause or contribute to ED. These can be due to anxiety, stress, depression, low self-esteem, guilt, anger or even indifference, just to mention a few. Homeopathic Treatment: As homeopathic treatment is holistic the individual with a condition is treated rather than the condition itself. As a result, any homeopathic remedy selected is for the person experiencing the condition not a specific remedy for ED. It is important for the homeopath to understand all the aspects of what is contributing to the man’s impotence. Taken into account are all physical, mental and emotional symptoms associated with or concomitant to the main complaint. Some of the main homeopathic remedies used to treat ED are as follows: Agnes Castus – can be useful in collapse or broken down states that occur after abuse of alcohol, drugs, and over-indulgence in sex. Argentum Nitricum – indicated where there is a weakness of mental control leading to impulsiveness, suggestibility and fearfulness. Impotence, worse when thinking of the problem. Caladium – indicated when the male is unable to have an erection despite having a sexual desire or urge. It is also for men who have a sexual weakness due to mental depression. Lycopodium – indicated in people who lack confidence even though they have the ability. This can be most noticeable in the intimate marriage relationship due to fear of being unable to fulfill responsibilities of intimacy. Selenium – can be useful in treating weak or feeble erections during sexual activity usually with early emissions. Often the condition is due to weakness and debility that is becoming all too common with today’s stresses. Colin Gillies is a homeopath in Qualicum Beach, B.C. Visit www.colingillieshomeopath.com

Herb of the Month

Buchu for Urinary Tract Health

T

his South African shrub is a diuretic that contains an oil which increases urine production. This makes it a good herb for men for several reasons. But first, a little history and more on this fascinating herb. Buchu has a distinctive sweet, lemony fragrance and is unique to South Africa. The ancient wisdom behind Agothosma Betulina, or buchu, is that it has been part of the indigenous culture and heritage of South Africa and the Khoisan tribe for centuries In ancient time the Khoisan tribe chewed the fresh or dried leaves or made infusions and poultices to heal a wide range of ailment and injuries. It was also used as an insect repellant and deodorant, and sometimes mixed with sheep fat to be used as a moisturizer and lubricant. As a natural diuretic, Buchu has been approved by the American Food and Drug Administration as a natural weight management supplement. It is effective at flushing the kidneys, is a great treatment for urinary tract and prostate infections as well as cystitis, gonorrhea, impotence and low sperm count. All of these benefits make it a great herb for men. The herb has antibacterial, antifungal and antispasmodic properties which provides relief from premenstrual cramping and bloating making it a beneficial herb for women as well. It has anti-inflammatory properties which make it a very effective remedy for gout and rheumatism. When one has had too much to drink, the herb prevents hangovers and other symptoms of overindulgence. It was also used as the first recorded treatment for cholera. Buchu is also widely used today as a general tonic to promote physical wellbeing and the Khoisan believed it was an elixer of youth. The herb is a valuable source of vitamins A, B, C, and E, as well as numerous minerals, antioxidants

and disease-preventing flavanoids. As early as 1652 the Khoisan bushmen introduced the first Dutch colonists to the healing herb. It was an extremely scarce and expensive commodity in those days – a mere thimbleful could be exchanged for a sheep. When these same colonists took buchu back to Europe, it was named "Noble’s Tea" because only the exceptionally wealthy could afford it. Eight bales of buchu were on board the Titanic for her disastrous first and only voyage. Fortunately, this amazingly versatile plant is considerably cheaper these days.

No More Anxiety

H

ow does someone experience No More Anxiety? That’s what the people attending a lecture on the topic learned during the Natural Health Show held on Saturday. Lecture presenter Nathalie Ristord of Nanaimo Hypnosis,a Rapid Certified Transformational Therapist, said there tools to help people deprogram their minds from anxiety. As a result, Ristord says they will no longer listen to the little voice in their mind that causes them anxiety and will look for the tools to use. “If you’re ready to accept them to deprogram you’re good,” she says. Ristord says she had her own deep anxieties and worked on them to resolve it. “You want the most effective way and what will stay with you for good,” she says. She described the symptoms of anxiety – unease, apprehension, nervousness, a feeling of worry often connected to an impending event. Physical symptoms include – blushing, sweaty hands, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, excessive sweating, impatience, muscle tension, nausea, dry mouth and dizziness. “It may be an emotional or psychological cause if there is nothing else,” says Ristord. She says the No More Anxiety Blueprint process covers a client’s personal history, identifies their version of anxiety and removes neural and physical blocks to find the root cause. Clients learn the impact to change the programming to reinforce a new version of themselves. Anxiety can strike anytime – even affecting Olympic athletes such as Benoit Huot, a gold medal swimmer who suddenly became afraid of the water. He worked with Ristord and the anxiety was traced back to his roots when he was eight years old. He also had a fear of flying.Within two sessions, his issues were resolved. The Art of Being Limitless Qigong

W

hat is it about this mysterious art form that sparks the imagination, inspiring an almost insatiable curiosity, awe and wonder from deep within. The fruits of Qigong and Tai Chi practices have guided dynasties and elicited great works from artists, poets, saints, scholars and sages across millennia. I’ve been a Trainer in the Forest Qigong practice of Shin-Sun-Do guiding classes, workshops and wellness retreats (such as this summer’s retreat on Hornby Island) since 2003. I love it and have ample opportunity to observe and appreciate the wonders and healing that its practices unfold in my studio and other environments each and every day. Around the world, seniors gather to practice in parks to cultivate wisdom, connection and longevity. Bold young athletes enter gruelling martial arts practices - where even the brashest show great respect for their trainers, desiring to better themselves by cultivating self-discipline, inner power and mastery. Mothers, business people and healers practice to take time for self, releasing the stress and demands to bring forth their best hearts and minds while caring and serving others. Monks and scholars train daily, year after year to attain stillness by perfecting the postures and movements for the betterment of themselves and humanity. Even our children are fascinated with the beauty, lessons, feats and adventures depicted in shows such as Karate Kid and Crouching Tiger, Sleeping Dragon. Those who suffer from chronic pain find the movements powerfully therapeutic yet gentle enough for their tired beings and aching or brittle joints. Depictions of Masters of limitless power, heightened intuition and high character bring forth a desire to hone body, mind and spirit from deep within us all. They awaken dreams of limitlessness and touch something deep within us that yearns for connection and expression. So why this timeless, wide spread, cross sector fascination to flow with or master this inner ki, qi or chi that looks so gentle and seemingly benign?

The Tao

Reconnecting to the rhythms and flow of your inherent nature... The Tao is a science and philosophy, referred to as ‘The 16 Herbal Collective June,’17

Way’. Living Tao means to flow harmoniously with the Laws of the Universe and ways of nature. My practice; “Shin-Sun-Do” dates back 9,700 years with data recorded in petroglyphs using deer hoof style markings from 4,500 years ago. It provided a method and philosophy that informed Asian culture, governance, health care and even ancient seed languages. The study and practice of the Tao Healing Arts is a process of returning to one’s true nature. By restoring balance between Heaven (your brain) and Earth (your body) through development of your Internal “Ki” energy, one becomes integrated and whole, quickly re-building the foundation of health, happiness and peaceful creativity that the human brain is always striving for. Qigong is very enjoyable, it connects us to ourselves, our environment and each other, and to a place both exciting and familiar. It centers us, and assures us we belong. The movements are as simple and soft as they are powerful and strong allowing ourselves to immerse ever more deeply as we develop skill and acumen. Simply put, Qigong tempers and tones us, physically, mentally and spiritually. When properly guided, the process systematically awakens every cell in our brain and body, unlocking long covered and forgotten wisdoms of humanity and life, the joys of creation in the present moment and limitless hope, confidence and possibility for the future.

Developing your center-point of balance

It is a law of nature that everyone and everything continuously seeks balance. One could say that most yearning and pain in life is in direct correlation with the

being’s imbalance and distance from its true nature, whether by lack or surplus. We complicate it by over analyzing and rationalizing, but it is really very simple. Everything balances from its center, everything! Whether a branch, 2 bags of beans on a scale, a rock on a ledge, or you. The laws of the universe and ways of nature apply. Once you experience this fundamental truth and choose to apply it, the

way becomes simple. You just need to make it your center! The first step is to develop your main center-point of balance, your physical body, to build a strong foundation. Then you can balance your body, mind and spirit as a whole. You need to develop it, re-training your brain and body in the process. You will know your physical body is balanced when it feels strong, vibrant and healthy, like a pyramid. When your mind is balanced, your heart becomes open, compassionate and joyous and the emotions are rich and mature without sentimentality. Your spirit becomes peaceful, productive and creative. It doesn’t take long to develop; once aligned your body, mind and spirit immediately begin to work together on the same team, helping you achieve your goals. After the initial stage as any accumulated stress releases, you will feel centered and soon after, as you continue to practice, a joyful adventure opens and your life becomes a precious and divine creative expression of your ‘true self’.

In no time your challenges, emotional and physical discomforts really do become opportunities, and you will be surprised to see yourself developing the resilience to gratefully recognize them as your guides, beckoning you ever inward to release what doesn’t serve, unfolding your inner beauty and true potential. Once you learn a few sequences and balancing techniques you can practice anytime & anywhere. It’s also very transportable and affordable, requiring only the equipment you were born with… your brain and your body. While I always offer Qigong during my retreats, this year during “The Tao Of Hornby Island Retreat” we will learn a few extra sequences and practices that you can take with you to quickly centre and balance for practice anytime and anywhere. It’s also a perfect match with the other water and forest sports we’ll enjoy, and great way to bond with other

retreat goers. If you are interested in joining us this summer on Hornby Island, or learning more visit the event page for details: http://heartdrumbeat.com/ the-tao-of-hornby-island-retreat. I hope I’ve inspired you to try Qigong and that you flourish and grow with health, happiness and peaceful connection as you do.
