www.herbalcollective.ca
Helping Men Be Healthy I’m thrilled to bring you the latest issue of the Herbal Collective. This issue focuses on Publisher’s Note men’s health and the different ways men can benefit from natural health therapies. Generally it’s women who take a stronger interest in herbal and natural health approaches and they eventually get the men in their life interested. Though sometimes a woman might suggest he get treated and he’ll argue ‘I’m fine!” Women who have been frustrated by a man’s approach to health will find the article by Carrie Ingrisano enlightening. Her article deals with how men view health care in a tactful way and sheds new light on practices that can benefit their unique approach as well as women. From a herbal point of view, experience herbalist Don Ollsin tells us how stinging nettles can help the prostate gland as well as the other benefits it has. Don has years of experience helping people through his workshops and online courses. Homeopath Colin Gillies shares his unique perspective on how homeopathy can be used to improve a man’s health. It’s worthwhile to think of these different approaches as tools in a health care toolbox and determine the ‘tool’ that best works for each individual. Also in this issue is an article on a couple of herbs that really help with weight loss – garcinia cambogia
and yerba mate. These are effective herbs. I have been drinking them in a healthy coffee and have so far lost five pounds when my weight previously hadn’t budged – even though I was doing all the right things. The combination of these herbs seems to pack a double wallop plus I should mention it helps suppress appetite. This is the thing to consider to get ready for summer. I’m looking forward to dropping another size and getting into some clothes I haven’t worn in a while. Other articles in this issue include one on the top herbs to grow for our herb gardening enthusiasts, the new flower essences, how dandelion can be used for pets and evidence of how Qi energy works. One thing I also want to mention is for those of you who have to deal with pain. I know natural ingredients work, such as MSM and methyl salicylate which is derived from wintergreen. I used it recently when I banged my thigh and it really made a difference. In all the years I have learned about how herbs and natural approaches work – I am still amazed at how effective they are. Like the story shared by Sharon at Live Fit Live Food. A relative with diabetes had an unhealthy blue color to her legs until Sharon suggested she try an inversion technique – part of the restorative fitness approach they use at Live Fit Live Food. The relative’s legs are now healthy when previously nothing else worked.

Herbs to Lose Weight Effectively
Garcinia Cambogia helps people lose weight in five ways - Photo contributed
It’s been touted as the Holy Grail of weight loss. Garcinia Cambogia is a small pumpkin-shaped fruit that grows in Indonesia and India, where it is more commonly known as Malabar tamarind. The fruit is dried and used extensively in curries. The recent popularity for the fruit’s extract as a weight loss supplement came from the work of Dr. Julie Chen, a well know specialist in the health and wellness field. Her studies proved that Garcinia Cambogia helped people taking it lose two to three times more weight without significantly changing their dietary habits or exercise routines. It has also been used to help stop gastric and duodenal ulcers by reducing the amount of HCA in the stomach. Many people also report lower Cholesterol levels when consuming this multi-benefit herb. GARCINIA CAMBOGIA works in five ways to help people lose weight. 1. It acts as a fat blocker which prevents fat cells from being formed, so excess fat is safely excreted 4
Herbal Collective June/July, 2013
from the body. 2. It zeroes in on decreasing belly fat and helps to eliminate it. 3. It suppresses the appetite and helps to control cravings, so less food is eaten and the individual eats only what they need. 4. It helps balance mood as it causes an increase in serotonin levels, which alleviates symptoms of stress and depression. This in turn decreases the need for ‘emotional’ eating or eating to relieve stress. 5. Garcinia Cambogia also helps manage cortisol levels in the body, a hormone that is directly tied to stress levels. The active ingredient in Garcinia Cambogia is hydroxycitrate, which has been shown to be a powerful inhibitor of fat formation in animals, according to the Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine. Taking a hydroxycitrate formula doesn’t mean that an individual can eat whatever they want and still expect to lose weight. It’s critical that a low fat diet still be followed.
However, the fat burning effects of Garcinia Cambogia are intensified when combined with chromium (which helps to balance blood sugar) and a thermogenic ingredient such as Yerba Mate. A thermogenic helps stimulate the metabolism to burn more calories as well as increasing energy production in the body. YERBA MATE (Pure energy) is derived from the nourishing leaves of the South American rainforest Holly Tree, yerba mate is believed to deliver the full strength of coffee, the health benefits of tea and the euphoria of chocolate all in one herb. Other health benefits observed when drinking mate are 1. Helps stimulate focus and clarity. 2. Increased caloric/metabolic burn rate. 3. Boots physical energy. 4. Aids in digestion. 5. High in nutritional quality, feeds your body key vitamins producing energy. It’s important to take the Garcinia Cambogia extract on an empty stomach about half an hour before meals. Pregnant or breast feeding women should avoid using it and those with diabetes should consult a doctor before using it.

Men and Their Unique Approach to Health Care By Carrie Ingrisano en have unique cultural norms when it comes to caring for their body health needs, and a comfort zone that does not always jive with the message and offerings of the modern health care system. In a Canadian study, men discussed barriers to utilizing primary care services. They preferred seeking help for a specific ailment rather then for preventative care; were only half as likely as women to have a general practitioner, and felt that seeking medical help involved relinquishing control, and was difficult to access(1). Their responses help us understand that the status quo of health care delivery is not fully relevant or empowering to many men. Hold that thought, and lets look forward to changes that are coming in theories about preventive health care.

Change is coming! Newer research puts more power in the hands of the individual to sculpt their strongest and most resilient body inside and out. We are unraveling the link between your inherited genes, and the factors that turn them on and off, your “epigenetics” (epi = on or over)(2). Epigenetics is the new buzzword. Until recently, it was thought that your “genotype” or unique genetic package was unchangeable, and functioned as the blueprint of your “phenotype” or physical body. Now we understand that there is a layering of systems that turn our genes on and off. These layers are: our fixed genetic code, our epigenetics or biochemical fields which overlay our genes, and our environment or life style practices. We can feel when our body is in tune or out of tune. Imagine that the keys of a piano represent your genetic code. Each note is a gene, with black keys and white keys being subtle variations of the 6

same gene; A, A sharp, and A flat. Your hands are your epigenetics. As you “play” your genes, your hands move busily from note to note turning sound on and off in specific tunes and harmonies. At any given moment some “genes” are on, some genes are sharp and some are not sounding at all. This is your

ever-evolving “genetic song”. Most people inherit genetic variations. They may have extra notes or notes that are missing. Your hands, or epigenetics, can learn to work around those unique genetic variations still able to create harmony. In this model, your genetic song and the health experience it creates, is influenced by your lifestyle choices. Attitudes and beliefs(3), relationship styles (4)(5), spiritual connection(6), foods and medicinal
plants(7), physical activity(8), and toxins or lack of toxins in the environment(9), are the composers of your individual genetic song. Lifestyle practices are the contractors of your body project as it constantly redesigns itself. Feeling empowered? Nothing is static, and there is little predestined in your body that you cannot influence through your personal choices. I have always thought that 90% of health potential happens in your head, your heart and your home. Build on that. Use your health care community to give you information and training, to check your current body status and help you design and implement the changes that you want to create in your own body wellness. All traditions of health care strive to empower their clients to reach their greatest potential in body health and social harmony. British Columbia is rich in its community of health care practitioners. Medical physicians, nurse practitioners, chiropractors, and naturopathic doctors are all exquisitely trained. Herbalists, acupuncturists, physiotherapists, massage therapists, personal trainers offer skilled techniques and wellness perspectives. We are important pieces in your toolbox. There is much more to write about epigenetics and lifestyle as it affects specific health conditions for men and women. Let’s keep talking about this. Best to you in your evolving health. Herb Profile
Stinging Nettle for Prostate Health and More
By Don Ollsin, MH, Environment Educator (MA candidate) & Sandy Ollsin, MA, MH
S
pring is one of the prime times of the year for learning how to nourish and support our bodies with herbs. And every Father’s Day in June is a timely reminder to continue fostering the good health of the beloved men in our lives. We can easily assist them in taking preventative health measures by using herbs. How? By learning which herbs to incorporate into our daily diets, and by encouraging the men in our lives to naturally strengthen and protect their prostate glands through using stinging nettle root and other herbal allies. Before we discuss nettle root, let’s first explore the whole stinging nettle in more detail. Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) is a deeply restorative spring tonic that grows wild not only here in the Pacific Northwest, but in numerous places worldwide. Although considered too unruly for formal propagation, stinging nettles can be introduced into the garden for regular use.
Growing Nettles We grow nettles behind some dwarf fruit trees in our backyard, so we are less apt to get stung (to avoid stings use gloves while harvesting), and around the sides of our compost bin, which conveniently dissuades rodents from pilfering through our coveted store of future black gold. When harvesting stinging nettle greens for use, the upper six leaves are usually the most tender and delicious, although in springtime all the leaves are quite tasty. We carefully chop and blend the leaves into savory squares, omelets, stir-fries, smoothies, juices, and more. Nettles are a welcome addition of vitamins, chlorophyll and minerals, and provide loads of flavour and energy to any dish. Be assured that once 8

cooked, nettles quickly lose their sting. (N.B.: there is a look-alike plant called “false nettle” that has no sting --- this is not the kind you want.) Medicinally, stinging nettle leaves offer soothing, anti-inflammatory and antihistamine properties. They also contain vitamin K which aids in healthy blood coagulation, and helps conditions like recurring nose-bleeds (Ollsin, 2000). If not available to eat fresh, dried stinging nettles can be taken as capsules, tablets, as tea, or in tincture form. Powdered, freeze-dried (capsulated) stinging nettle leaves have proven to be an especially effective remedy for preventing and treating a myriad of grass, pollen, and food allergies wherever inflammation, excess histamine, and irritation are present. Nettles are also successfully used for the prevention and treatment of asthma and other respiratory
ailments, as well as a host of health needs specific to women (which is a whole other article in itself). Stinging nettles are an excellent reliever of joint pain and discomfort. On more than one herb walk, Don has counseled people with mild arthritic pain to sting the affected area. And much to their surprise, after the tingly stinging abated several hours later, they found all of the pain and inflammation permanently eradicated.
Nettle for BPH
Scientists are uncertain exactly why nettle root reduces these kinds of symptoms. It is possible that it contains chemicals that affect hormone production, distribution, and uptake (with testosterone and estrogen), or that somehow it acts directly on prostate cells. Remember, it is important to work with your doctor and professional health care workers when treating BPH. Specifically, a proper diagnosis is necessary in order to rule out the possibility of prostate cancer.
Back to men’s health using stinging nettle root. Both the seeds and roots of the stinging nettle have successfully been used for treating BPH. Nettle root extracts in particular have been extensively studied in human clinical trials as a treatment for symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or swollen prostate.

These extracts have been shown to help relieve symptoms, compared to placebo, both by themselves (Safarinejad, 2005), and when combined with other herbal medicines (Lopatkin, et al, 2005) such as Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens), for example.

Aloe Vera Juice for Skin Complaints Summer is here and so are the many hazards of summer that affect our skin. One is pesky insects like wasps and mosquitoes that sting and leave an itch or swollen bump. Summer sunburns can leave skin red and raw while those with skin diseases such as psoriasis, eczema and acne look for ways to get relief. Cancer sufferers often have rashes and look for relief. One plant that solves all these issues is aloe vera, which can be used as a juice or gel for skin care issues. Aloe vera works in several ways for helping the skin.
1. It is moisturizing
Aloe vera juice and gel moisturizes the skin and can be used to treat rashes, acne, for aftershaves, skin diseases, etc. Applying the gel prior to using makeup can help prevent the skin from drying.
2. It is cooling
Aloe vera juice or gel has a cooling effect that is particularly helpful for itchy skin from insect bites, the effects of sunburn or rashes. It reduces the pain and swelling from sunburn or rashes and acts as a protective layer on the skin to replenish moisture.
3. Aloe vera is great for treating acne

It is anti-microbial so it helps kill bacteria that causes acne and cool the inflammation. Aloe allows the skin to heal quickly and doesn’t give an oily feel, so it is perfect for any complexion. It’s healing properties are also good for skin diseases like psoriasis and eczema.
4. Aloe helps fight the problems of skin aging,
especially as it is exposed to sun damage. The vitamins C and E in aloe help improve skin’s natural firmness and keep skin hydrated.
Testimonial - below is an amazing testimonial on how Aloe juice helped heal a rash from cancer. Back in 2001 my husband had cancer. After his first set of Chemo he got a horrible fire engine red rash all down his chest and up his neck. The rash was hot and so itchy that he could hardly stand it! I called the Cancer unit and they advised that there was nothing that would help that rash and that having gotten it with the first treatment he would continue to get it after each set of treatments. I could not believe it...nothing could be done....being a praying person I thought up a quick prayer “Oh God what can we do there must be something.” Well the thought came to mind...”you have Aloe Vera juice in the fridge, use that,” I told my husband that I was going to cover him with the Aloe, that it was going to be cold but if nothing else it would cool it for a few minutes. So I applied the Aloe with a cotton ball and instant relief..That was at 9am, it lasted most of the day. At around 4pm the itch came back, so I covered him again.... instant relief again At bed time I repeated the application...even though it was not bothering him at that time and come morning the rash was gone. What’s more we never saw it again.....also he was told that he might get mouth sores but that they had what was called Miracle mouth wash....$30.00 for about 6 ounces. Well, Vern did get mouth sores.,their mouth wash did nothing, so back to the Aloe Vera Juice. He gargled with it then swallowed it,sores went away and never came back.Vern used the Aloe Vera Juice all the time he was getting chemo and radiation....we shared it with others at the Cancer clinic..Does it work? I think so, I know so, It sure worked for us. Thanks again...have a wonderful evening.....Sharron For more information contact Maureen Glowasky at www.maureenglowasky.com.

Restore Your Health You were in good shape. But, something happened! It slipped away somehow. If this applies to you then rest assured that you are not alone. As a matter of fact sooner or later we may all end up in that type of predicament. The GOOD NEWS? It can be fixed. In our contemporary society we tend to forget a couple of important health concepts: 1.Breathing keeps us alive from moment to moment 2.Food – proper nutrients – make up the building blocks of our body For acquiring optimum fitness we need a healthy body. And health happens at a cellular level. Every living part of our body is made up of cells. And if those cells are healthy and strong then we are healthy and strong and fit. So what creates healthy cells? We all know the answer to that: 1. Lots of Oxygen 2. Enzymes, preferably living enzymes 3. Proper nutrients – which means as low in toxins as possible

4. Water – and it needs to be alkaline It sounds simple and easy. Why then are we not in peak shape all the time???. Most of us will know the answer to that question also. 1. Our atmosphere has been oxygen depleted, our life style inhibits our breathing, most of us use less than 30% of our lung capacity, respiratory diseases show Arie Vander Reyden practices the fastest increase in inversion therapy at Live Fit the Western World 2. Our food is for the most part depleted of enzymes let alone ‘live enzymes’ because of processing, storing, transportation, and the way it was grown in the first place 3. Not only is most of the food in the supermarket processed and dead, but it to a large extend become toxic and foreign to what is ‘natural’ in our body 4. Allmost all of the water we drink or use for our food is well below the ph balance of 7.3 and is thus acid and destructive to the health of our cells. The answer then to restoring our fitness, preferably quickly, with lasting results, as economical as possible is to 1. Learn how to breathe properly again, 2. Create the healthiest possible diet, 3. Use only Alkaline water. Not that difficult you might think. True! But almost all of us need to be shown and need to practice how to maximize our oxygen intake.. We also need guidance in what to eat for our specific needs in order to optimize our health.. Through workshops, classes, and individual sessions our company LIVE FIT LIVE FOOD will educate you and assist you in creating a lifestyle that will not only restore your fitness but keep you there. Top Herbs to Grow for the Garden last the winter.
By Marilyn Zink There are some herbs that should be grown in every culinary garden. Depending on one’s taste, it is handy to have an array of fresh herbs available when the need strikes. Here is a list of the Top Herbs to Grow.
Lavender Lavender is an awesome herb to grow for many reasons. It’s fresh clean scent, it’s lovely mauve flowers, it’s compact habit that make it an excellent border plant. Plus, lavender has culinary as well as medicinal uses. There are several types of lavender to grow so investigate to grow the type that appeals to you most.
Basil It’s seen frequently but many people have difficulty growing basil. That’s because basil is often put out too soon and it does not tolerate cold weather. In a West Coast climate basil should not be put out until mid-June, depending on the weather temperatures. It can be started indoors from seed and makes a great windowsill herb, particularly through the winter months. The flavor of basil is ‘de rigeur’ for making pesto.
Chives Chives are from the allium or onion family and as a perennial it only needs to be planted once to bring green shoots of flavor year after year. The pretty purple flowers also make chives an attraction addition to the garden. The sharp, peppery flowers can also be eaten and added to salads. Chives like to grow in full sun and loose soil that is rich in organic matter. Add to scrambled eggs, poached salmon, baked or mashed potatoes, stews, soups and more. Chives are also excellent container plants and
Mint
can grow indoors on a windowsill.
Cilantro/Coriander Cilantro and coriander are the same plant, the difference being that cilantro are the leaves of the plant and coriander are the seeds. The pungent leaves are used in Mexican cuisine and are what gives salsa a kick. The coriander seeds are often used in Asian cuisine. The plant grows quickly and easily from seed but tends to bolt (go to seed) early so it is useful to plant throughout the season to ensure a continuous supply. It prefers sun but can tolerate some shade in loose and well-composted soil. It also grows well in containers and is a tender plant so it does not
Mint is a common addition to most gardens and many people grow peppermint. But there are many types of mint, each with its own distinctive flavor and aroma. Chocolate mint, apply mint, pineapple mint, candy mint and more can thrill the senses. Mint grows easily and does well in partial shade in loose soil with good organic matter. It sends runners out and has been known to leap fences so keep an eye on it. One way to prevent this is to put it in a pot sunk in the dirt or simply grow it in containers.
Oregano Oregano is one of the most common herbs to grow but is it oregano? Often marjoram gets mistaken for oregano. The difference is that oreg-

Treat Prostate with Homeopathy
M
ost men know very little about the prostate and a survey once showed that 89 per cent of men didn’t know where the prostate was located. Embarrassingly studies have also shown that women know more about the prostate and prostatic problems than men! So what exactly is the prostate? It is an important doughnut shaped organ about the size of a walnut, which surrounds the beginning of the urethra (tube from the bladder to the penis) at the base of the urinary bladder. Its’ main function is to produce about 25 per cent of the semen in every ejaculation and plays an important part in the male reproductive system. This prostatic secretion protects and nourishes the sperm (produced by the testicles) and helps to prevent the urethra from becoming infected. The most common problem affecting the prostate is prostate enlargement (Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy or BHP) and is strongly related to normal aging. his condition does not produce symptoms unless it starts to press on the urethra and obstruct the outflow of urine; BHP is not considered as a risk factor of prostate cancer. BPH can present with any of the following symptoms - all of which gradually increase if nothing is done about it: • A feeling that the bladder never completely empties; • A desire to pass urine much more frequently; • Waking at night to pass urine • Difficulty in getting started when urinating (hesitancy); • Pain when passing urine or blood in urine; • Poor or weak flow of urine; • Dribbling of urine. Complications can occur with urine retention in the bladder when it is not completely emptied after passing urine. Urine retention can lead to recurring urinary infections or incontinence (as urine dribbles 14

around the blockage). In more serious cases kidney failure can occur. The prostate can be examined by the physician putting an index finger in the rectum – a slightly uncomfortable, but not painful medical procedure. Digital examination can reveal if the prostate is enlarged. Orthodox treatment of this condition is with drugs in milder cases and surgery in more severe cases. One drug used is finasteride which can sometimes slow down the enlargement of the prostate. There are two main types of surgical operations for BPH: removal of the prostate or boring a hole in it to ease the flow of urine (transurethral resection or TUR). The drugs can of course have side effects and the surgery almost always has a downside. Can Homeopathy help with BPH? Homeopathy is one of the most popular holistic systems of medicine and has over 200 years of clinical evidence of its effectiveness with BPH. The selection of a remedy is based upon the theory of individualization and symptoms similarity – Law of Similars. Homeopaths believe that this is the only way to regain a state of complete health by treating all the signs and symptoms of the individual. The aim of homeopathy is not only to treat enlarged prostate but to address its underlying cause and individual susceptibility. Homeopathy has several safe remedies available to treat BPH that can be selected on the basis of cause, sensations and modalities (what makes it better or worse) of the complaints. Following are some remedies which are helpful in the treatment of BPH: Sabal serrulata – frequent urge to urinate, with difficult or painful urination, and spasms of the bladder or urethra. Chimaphilla – a constant desire to pass urine, which is difficult to start and, is passed only in small
quantities. Sharp pains when urinating running from the bladder to the end of the urethra, frequent urge to urinate at night. May be able to pass urine only when standing with legs wide apart and body bending forward. Clematis – urination is intermittent, must wait a long time before urine finally passes, and stream is weak and thin. Urine may come initially in drops with burning pain, then flows freely and more painlessly, with dribbling after. Thuja – frequent urge to pass urine with burning or cutting sensation at the neck of the bladder. Conium – intermittent stream, with difficulty in completely evacuating the bladder, dribbling in old persons. Equisetum – pains on passing urine and at the end of urination, with a heavy sensation in the bladder, not helped by urination. Staphysagria – involuntary dribbling, with the sensation that a drop of urine is rolling down the channel. Burning pains in the urethra between urination, but stopping on urination. Pareira brav – urination drop by drop, with pain from the kidneys down to the thighs. Ferrum pic – frequent urination at night, with smarting of the neck of the bladder and pressure on the rectum. Top Herbs, from page 13 ano has a sharper flavor so if it’s oregano you are looking for that gives pizza flavour, make sure you get Greek Oregano. Both marjoram and oregano do well in pots and thrive in full sun. The plant dies back over winter so be sure to trim dead branches back to allow new growth in the spring.
Parsley This is a most have for every kitchen herb garden – the only question is whether to grow curly or flat-leafed parsley. Parsley thrives in rich soil that is kept damp and does okay with partial shade but prefers full sun. Be sure to trim it back to prevent flowering so the plant keeps producing.
Rosemary Rosemary is another perennial favourite in the garden. It originates from the Mediterranean so it prefers full sun in a protected location. Rosemary does not like wind so grow it against a south-facing wall or fence and it will thrive. The piney needles are great for adding to soups or stews and other dishes.
Thyme The common garden thyme is the type of thyme most people grow but there are other culinary varieties such as lemon thyme that makes a great addition to tea. Thyme grows well in full sun in loose soil. It does not die back during the winter so it makes a great addition to borders or it can be grown as a tiny hedge. Thyme is wonderful added to soups and stews as well as poultry dishes.

The New Flower Essences Combining Ancient Technology with Future Science
By Dr. Natalia Schotte lower essences are a profound form of energy medicine and have long been part of the tradition of Earthbased and Shamanic healing. For millennia, healers of all descriptions have accessed and utilized the intelligence inherent in nature for a variety of purposes, particularly personal transformation. From Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome to the Aborigines of Australia, civilizations around the world have revered the power of flowers and used flower remedies for emotional, physical and spiritual healing. Paracelsus, the 15th century botanist and physician, wrote specifically about collecting dew from flowering plants, diluting it and using the liquid to treat imbalances in his patients.

times. As the speed of change escalates and our individual and collective challenges intensify, it is time to allow Nature to guide us to solutions to our most perplexing problems. There are flower essence practitioners doing pioneering work in the fields of health and spirituality. They are at the leading edge of new thought and are laying the foundation for future science. The traditional remedies are still effective for their intended purposes; however, flower essences holding new patterns of consciousness provide solutions at a level that has not previously existed, assisting us to address challenges we have never before faced. They support our development into more evolved, spiritually mature and vital human beings.
How Flower Essences Are Made Every flower holds a pattern of consciousness or ‘energy signature.’ The flower essence practitioner chooses blossoms that have reached their peak potency and immerses the petals in water. The practitioner invokes nature’s intelligence to extract the essence of the flower, specifically its healing properties. After sitting in the sun for several hours, the solution is preserved, usually with brandy or vinegar. The resulting stock solution, called Mother Tincture, is used to create dosage bottles.
In recent times, this ancient technology has experienced a significant evolution, becoming one How Flower Essences Work of the most potent forms of natural Each flower essence has a specific healing available for assisting us to purpose. When you take a flower meet the unique challenges of our 16 Herbal Collective June/July, 2013
essence (on or under the tongue), the ‘energy signature’ it holds enters your subtle energy system and is translated into the physical, emotional, mental and/or spiritual levels, creating shifts over time. The effects of flower essences are subtle and profound, immediate and long-term. Your level of sensitivity determines how quickly a flower essence has an effect on your subtle energy system and your ability to notice the effect. To increase your sensitivity, adopt higher nutritional practices (e.g., cleansing, fasting, juicing, raw cuisine, etc.). Also consider increasing the time you spend in spiritual practices (e.g., empowered prayer, meditation, Tai Chi, Yoga, etc.).
Healing versus Suppression We are accustomed to addressing symptoms by suppressing them, rather than healing their underlying metaphysical causation. Ultimately, to experience health and well-being, we must heal imbalances at their point of origin within our consciousness, i.e., imprints from past experiences such as childhood trauma. We must also make the requisite life changes to align our lives with the impulses of our Souls. All flower essences address underlying causation to some extent. The flower essences based in the new Aquarian consciousness provide an opportunity for us to take our inner healing to new levels - reaching final resolution of the past, setting the stage for optimal health and supporting us to reach higher levels of consciousness.
Choosing the Correct Flower Essences There are many flower essences on the market with a variety of purposes. Here are some examples of the new flower essences:
1. Decide at which level you wish to work When choosing a brand of flower essences, recognize each brand has a different purpose and intended level of effect. Some address physical imbalances, others work on the emotional/mental issues underlying physical imbalances, and still others go deeper, working at the spiritual level. Working at the spiritual level allows you to achieve authentic resolution and ultimate transcendence of your challenges.
2. Assess flower essence quality
Rose ‘Angel Face’ (above) produces a flower essence which assists us to transcend the Piscean dynamics of co-dependent giving and conditional love and anchor the Aquarian dynamic of extension of self through unconditional love. The result is the experience of authentic intimacy and oneness–essential aspects of evolved consciousness. It is especially useful for exposing what we require to heal in order to overcome patterns of codependent giving and/or withholding. If we are experiencing any form of lack in our lives, it assists us in transforming the perceptions that are keeping us from the ‘miracle of receiving.’
Rose ‘Europeana’ (above) produces a flower essence that draws us into the inner sanctum of the self where we experience our perfection as a soul incarnate. It supports relinquishing non-essential activities and the primacy of the thinking mind so we are able to seat our consciousness in the Inner Sanctuary of the Self. In this inner sanctuary, we experience the eternal and changeless nature of being. We come to know that we are innocent even when we appear guilty, we are whole even when we appear broken, and there is no death even though we appear to die. With so many flower essences available, how do you know what to choose?
There is great diversity in flower essence quality. One of the key factors is the land on which the flowers are grown. Land that is chemical-free, energetically and physically balanced and maintained at the highest level produces the most potent flowers. The consciousness of the flower essence practitioner is also critical to the quality of the flower essences.
3. Choose flower essences that support your highest unfoldment at this time Use your intuition supported by the names of the flower essences, their purpose statements and corresponding photos, and/or use muscle-checking or dowsing (with a pendulum).
Recognizing the Effects of Flower Essences Be conscious of prematurely judging the efficacy of flower essences and, therefore, prematurely discontinuing their use. I had a client who was taking flower essences to support her in addressing the underlying issues related to a long-standing depression, for which she was heavily medicated. After a few months she wrote to say she was going to discontinue using the flower essences because she hadn’t noticed any changes. I encouraged her to keep taking them. A year later, I saw her 60 pounds lighter, with a smile on her face, having made a series of positive life changes. We have become accustomed to arduous and complicated approaches to personal growth. Though our evolutionary leaps can be challenging, our personal growth can be simplified…and accelerated. Such is the gift of flowers. The ancient Maya call the new age that began on December 21, 2012, the Age of ‘Itza’ which means, among many things, ‘peace and flowers.’ It is time for us to blossom. Dr. Natalia M Schotte founded La Vie de la Rose Flower Essences with its mission to accelerate spiritual growth in 2006. Dr. Schotte holds a Ph.D. in Spiritual Counseling from The Open International University for Complementary Medicines.
The Beautiful Dandelion Safe Herbs for Animal Friends Pet Health
D
andelions grow all around us, and right By Carola Schleuss now they are in full bloom. I like to pick the flowers and make an oil to relax tight muscles, the leaves to make a tea for the kidneys, and the roots for their amazing systemic cleansing properties. Dandelion flavour is bitter, which according to Traditional Chinese Medicine helps aid the digestion of all whole foods, complex carbohydrates, fats and proteins. These foods require hydrochloric acid secreted from the stomach lining to digest and release nutrients (proteins, fats vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, etc.), for more efficient absorption into and through the small intestine to nourish our nervous system, organs, muscles and tissues. Chinese herbalists often recommend dandelion for its medical properties, for purifying the blood and increasing the effectiveness of the immune system. Bitters also ward off parasites and promote a healthy balance of bacteria, reducing the opportunities for fungus over-growth. Bitters have anti-inflammatory properties which are helpful in the amelioration of conditions such as arthritis, irritable bowel, and colitis, as well as reducing mucous and phlegm. In the eleventh century, Arabic cultures described using Dandelion root and leaf for liver and kidney health, soon it became common for Europeans to include dandelion in their medicine cabinets. To most people the dandelion is merely a weed and a nuisance. I remember watching a television advertisement for an allergy medication which presents a woman struggling with rather extreme pollen allergies. The ad has her crushing with her high heel shoe, the “evil” dandelion which she wrongfully presumed to be causing her allergies. As I watched this, my thoughts were, “but really this plant would assist in the healing of an overloaded liver and weak digestion, so these allergies would go away.” It still surprises me how much money people spend killing dandelions and other supposed weeds with dangerously poisonous chemicals, increasing their chemical exposure, and exacerbating their symptoms. Crazy. Animals are different, if left to their own innate intelligence, will naturally consume 18

beneficial plants and other naturally healthy substances. Amoeba are naturally repelled by toxic environments and substances. Are they smarter, more discerning? Better educated, environmentally aware? Dandelion greens (leaf) are wonderful to add to a salad, make a tea, or dry and add to your animal friend’s meal. The leaf is beneficial for regulating water metabolism and is rich in nutrients. The beauty of using plants as a diuretic is they have minerals which are always lost when taking diuretic medication. The flower can be eaten, made into syrup or infused in olive oil. The oil used externally is a wonderful pain reliever. The root is one of my favorites, it can be roasted, which then makes a wonderful coffee substitute, or dried and powdered and added to animal friend’s meal. Dandelion root is known to assist the liver in cleansing the blood, and aids in digesting food . Folklore and Myths of the dandelion. The predictable opening and closing of the dandelion flower gave it the name “fairy clocks”. Dandelion was used as a descriptive tool, if you blow the seeded head of the dandelion, the number of seeds left would predict the number of children you will have. Dandelion also symbolised love, wishes, welcome, bitterness and the sun. Dandelion root & leaf: Taraxacum officinale, Part Used: entire plant (leaf, root, flower). Preparation: powder and add to meal, leaf as a salad, oil, tea, tincture, or capsules. Taste: Bitter. General properties: Leaf - diuretic, rich in vitamins and minerals, especially beta carotene, vitamins B, C and D. Root- good source of potassium, high in inulin which is known as a prebiotic, which encourages and enhances the growth of beneficial intestinal flora. Liver cleaning and toning herb. Antiinflammatory. Most often applied medically and nutritionally: Leaf – important herb in formulas to relieve water retention, especially those with high blood pressure, helps keep healthy enamel on the teeth, supports liver health. Root- Used in formulas for cleansing the liver, stimulates bile secretion, and production of enzymes. Anti-inflammatory. Pain Management Can be a Pain
Y
ou do not have to be a doctor or practictioner to manage your pain. Often, relying on professionals for help is the only right way. I can’t emphasize how important it is to know and accept when you do need to see a professional. Most times it shouldn’t be that hard, but being human, we will find an excuse to justify putting off or avoiding entirely getting the help we need. This can and usually does lead to more serious issues. One of the things about pain is that no one experiences it the same way Though the source of the pain may be identical, no two people will have the same discomfort from it, or the willingness to tolerate it or do something about it in the same way. What is causing or has caused the pain can be the determining factor. If something is causing the pain, stop doing it, wearing it, eating it or protect yourself from it. Life generally has taught us what to do when pain is introduced. Taking the wait and see approach is one way of responding to pain. For example, if we know it isn’t life threatening and from experience know there’s a good chance things will settle down a natural health product can be a good solution for controlling pain. When choosing a natural health product, look for effective ingredients. MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is a mineral that is critical for the normal functioning of the body and it helps reduce joint pain and inflammation. It has a long history of healing. Capsicum Oleoresin is found in hot peppers. It works by blocking the neurotransmitter substance “P” production and by blocking C-Fiber or painfiber conduction, thereby reducing neurogenic inflammation and pain response. This ingredient works directly to decrease pain at the site of your nerves. Methyl Salicylate occurs naturally in Wintergreen
leaves, known as nature’s aspirin. It has the ability to penetrate deeply into the body to the origins of pain and also provides an immediate cooling effect. I can’t stress enough how important it is to get checked out by a health professional. At the least, knowing what the problem is and possible remedies will help you make an informed decision of how to proceed. Get something that works. Look for all three of the ingredients mentioned in THENTIX Muscle and Joint Formula. Find out more about Thentix Muscle & Joint Formula from Rupert Solutions. Evidence of How Qi Energy Works By Adria Ellis
I
t is said in ancient Chinese Medicine, that when we are conceived, the soul is called into the fertilized egg, and as the soul travels from the Tao (consciousness, source etc.) it passes through the “veil of forgetting”. It is with this in mind that I want to introduce Qi Gong as an ancient Chinese form of healing that can assist us with remembering our relationship to energy and consciousness. The question I like to ask then is not what is energy… but what is NOT energy? If we look at the atom as the most basic building block we can learn that the nucleus of this atom is a combination of positively charged electrons and neutrons surrounded by negatively charged electrons that are in constant movement. They then bind to other atoms to develop into chemical compounds and essentially become matter. If the smallest particles responsible for the formation of matter contain moving energetic parts… then couldn’t it simply be our perception that determines what is static and what is energetic in our world?! Jill Bolte Taylor spoke on TED about her “Stroke of insight” where, as a neurologist, she was able to witness her own stroke that compromised her leftbrain hemisphere. The left hemisphere of the brain is responsible for language, the past and future orientation, identifying the self as separate to other people and objects, linear thinking, and details. The right hemisphere is responsible for images, learning through movement, our sense perception, and our self in relationship to the other, as a collective consciousness. In her account of her stroke she tells that as her right hemisphere became the dominant function she could no longer perceive where her body began and ended. She recalls that when she was in the bathroom, with her hand against the wall for balance, she was unable to see her hand as separate to the wall, but instead, as an extension of the other. She contin20

ues to describe that after her surgery she thought to herself “there is no way I can squeeze the enormity of who I am back into my body.” It seems that in accessing the right hemisphere of the brain we can recognize our extension into all things, into consciousness and connect to the energy around us. Taoism can be explored from a similar perspective as it encourages us to recognize that energy is all around us, that time is circular rather then linear, that there are no coincidences and that there is no beginning or end as everything is an extension of itself, such as the seasons. Qi Gong translates as “energy work” and is the basis for all ancient Chinese healing including Chinese massage, acupuncture/acupressure, Qi emission and Qi Gong movement. These ancient healing forms are all about cultivating and balancing life force energy in the body. But where does this energy come from? We have learned the importance of rest, food, and exercise as integral ways to maintain energy

and health; and yet, if we take it a step further and explore the idea of energy being all around us, even in a table or a tree, we can essentially recognize our connectedness to all things. What if we were to align ourselves through Qi Gong movement, acupressure, mediation, and massage to stretch our consciousness outside of our body, our pain or our hurt and expand our awareness to cultivate support, strength and healing from the energy around us? What if we could change our perspective and recognize how infinitely connected we actually are to our environment, and it is only our perception that prevents us from accessing the wealth of energy available to us? What if we could learn to cultivate Qi and heal our body, mind and spirit?! * Adria began her studies in Jin Shin Do Acupressure over 20 years ago. Healing through Past Life Regression
I
n the last 18 years of listening to client’s Hypnotherapy experiences it has been ByGermana Rovinelli my practice to look for solutions to their present problems through altered state work. Some clients can easily retrieve information at the stage before this lifetime. Often they will state regretfully that they do not want to come back to a physical experience, it is so much more comfortable in the spirit dimension. Life in a physical body is so confining and limiting. When asked why they choose to come, since no one is forcing them to return, their answer is always the same. “ The earth is the place were the soul can grow spiritually, it is like a classroom for soul development, since I want to grow spiritually I have to come back.” The new personality that is taken on by the soul is selected in accordance with the lessons to be learned, and those lessons are continued from all the experiences that have accrued from the past that have not been resolved or integrated. The soul returns, retaining all of the positive qualities gleaned from the past, and bringing into this new experience the skills and talents developed through many lives. However, the most gifted and intelligent personality may also bring into the current life the burden of guilt from many past infractions of the spiritual laws. The personality is unaware of any past infractions, since the knowledge is stored in the subconscious mind. It is this subconscious knowledge that so powerfully influences the daily life of the individual. There is no way to prove the following statement, but from the evidence available in the past life chronicles of many regression therapists, the history of abuse stands out as the most heinous of man’s crimes. In many cases the reports have shown that the abused in this life was an abuser in the past and has chosen to relieve his or her guilt by being the victim 22
Herbal Collective June/July, 2013
this time around. The perpetrator is learning one lesson and the victim is learning another. In addition each one reacts or responds to the experience according to the spiritual development of the soul. For example one person will increase in the rage he or she already has, while another will grow in love, forgiveness, and understanding. Attitudes create “blueprints” for the future of each of us. The individual who is guilt ridden is constantly sending out negative energies which literally create disaster in one form or another. Feeling unworthy of love causes others to turn away, and constantly anticipating punishment attracts negative experiences (and perpetrators). Such an individual has no awareness of the fact that he or she is literally creating his or her own pain, failures, and rejections. Their feelings of being victimized escalate, and resentments and rage are compounded. Whether previous lives are accepted because of positive results achieved in past-life regression therapy, or because some other explanation such as gene memory, race consciousness, or collective unconscious, is a matter of personal choice. The results from hypnotherapy speak volumes. I personally feel that there isn’t a problem or negative tendency that hypnotherapy and past life regression cannot help. I also feel that this is the most efficient form of therapy that has been devised.
