Making Herbal Elixirs and Cordials
A
group of women were happily busy in the kitchen. But they weren’t cooking – they were blending and combining herbs and fruit with alcohol to make herbal elixirs. It was held in a special class called Making Herbal Cordials, Elixirs and Lattes by certified herbalist and natural health consultant Georgina Cyr of Port Alberni, B.C. Elixirs are made with a sweetener and preserved in a liquid used for medicinal purposes. “It’s a way of making herbal medicine more palatable, easy to take and enjoyable,” says Cyr. “Sweeteners create the medicine to be more like a pleasant sipping liquer. Cordials are sweeter yet and are not necessarily use for medicinal purposes, though the addition of herbs and fruits can enhance the flavor. The lattes used nut milks combined with herbs and coconut oil to make it into a frothy latte, similar to a sweet chai tea. The class focused mainly on making elixirs with a variety of dried herbs were used – sarsaparilla, elderflower, rosemary, mint, yarrow, stinging nettles, lemon balm, mullein, basil, lavender. Spices used included cinnamon, ginger, cumin and cardamom pods along with dried orange peel. Fruits used included pears, pineapples, strawberries and raspberries. Alcohol used included white, rose and red wines as liquors of rum and vodka. “The rum and vodka will pull the medicinal qualities better than wine,” says Cyr. Sarsaparilla was popular as it added extra flavor to the elixirs. Cyr says the herb is “anti-viral, great for the immune system, love it because it has that root beerish flavor. Mullein is an herb that is “amazing for the lungs,” so it is useful in elixirs for colds and flu. It is traditionally used for treating respiratory issues such as chest colds, bronchitis and asthma. It can be combined with elderflower, which has strong antiviral properties and is good for the immune system. Another good herb to use in cold and flu elixirs is yarrow, which is useful for fever, common cold, hay 4

fever and indigestion. Several fresh slices of ginger can also be added as ginger is good for nausea and digestive disorders. It also adds a zippy flavor. “Some of the herbs are very bitter,” says Cyr. “Bitter herbs are better for digestion.” The bitter herbs are improved with fruit like pears and pineapples along with honey used as a sweetener in every elixir. One combination featured cardamom, honey and vodka, which Cyr describes as “almost like drinking Buckleys. It’s good for circulation, anti-bacterial, digestion, good for the liver and gall bladder.” Another combination featured strawberry, apples and lavender in white Zinfandel while a cold and flu formula had elderflower, peppermint, yarrow and mullein in rum. Many Benefits to Oil of Oregano
Part 2
This is a continuation from last month’s article on the benefits of Oil of Oregano by Roger Baird
Inflammatory diseases Arthritis, bursitis, carpal tunnel, sore muscles and more respond well to topical applications of Oregano oil. Rub a few drops in the area as many times a day as you like. Oregano oil has the ability to penetrate through the skin right to the sinovial fluid of the joint where its anti-inflammatory and pain killing properties will provide relief. Internal usage is also recommended.
Fungal infection Studies indicate that as much as 50% of the population suffer from Candida albicans infection. This can manifest as chronic fatigue, bowel and stomach problems, nail fungus, eating disorders, yeast infection, psoriasis, eczema and up to 300 other diseases. Candida is a fungus that lives in the colon and is harmless when kept in check by beneficial flora in the gut. Often Candida mushrooms out of control and enters the bloodstream after treatment with pharmaceutical antibiotics. Diets high in sugar, white flour and junk foods feed the Candida and it multiplies rapidly. Oregano oil is a powerful antifungal and may be used successfully to eliminate Candida or keep it in check. Start with low dosages at first as the toxins from the dead Candida are potent. Drink lots of water and gradually, over several weeks, increase your dosage until you're feeling better. Stay on that dosage, typically 5 drops 6 times daily, for several months and avoid sweets and refined flours. Use topically on nail fungus and skin disorders at least twice daily. For dandruff, add a few drops to your shampoo as you are washing your hair.
Upper respiratory Lungs can be a real problem to treat when they become infected or when people suffer from asthma or allergies. Oregano oil is highly volatile which means the molecules become airborne easily. This is great for treating lungs. Just inhale the vapours directly from the bottle as often as necessary. Supplement with a drop or two under the tongue at least 4 times daily and more if you feel it necessary. You may also put a drop or two on a tissue and leave it by your pillow at night.
This is a good method to use with infants and small children although be sure to keep the tissue out of their reach.
Disinfectant Oregano oil is a powerful antibacterial so it is a useful addition to liquid hand soaps and for disinfecting everything from cuts and scrapes to kitchen counters. Put a few drops in the water of a cool mist machine and leave in the bedroom or workplace to kill airborne germs.
Burns For typical stove top burns that are painful and usually blister up, Oregano oil provides almost instant pain relief and often no blister will develop if it is immediately applied to the burn. Serious burns should be treated at a hospital or by a qualified health practitioner.
Bites, stings Oregano oil has the ability to neutralize and extract venom from insect , spider and snake bites. So if you are planning to go on safari or just enjoy the great Canadian outdoors, you may want to carry a bottle with you. If you have an allergy to wasp or bee stings, timely topical and internal application of Oregano oil could save your hide. Apply Oregano oil to unsightly red , swollen bites and see them disappear much faster. If bitten by a poisonous snake or spider immediately seek medical attention.
Slivers Put Oregano oil on the skin over a sliver that will not come out and usually it will work its way out overnight.
Teeth and Gums When you have a toothache and your dentist can't see you, Oregano oil will tide you over until he can. Rub it around the infected tooth. It will kill the infection and its pain killing action will reduce pain. For diseased gums, rub the oregano oil over the gums. Take the oil several Oil of Oregano, continued on page 18 Roger Baird is an alternate health researcher and advocate and president of Hedd Wyn Essentials, located on beautiful Denman Island. Natural Alternatives to Inflammation
W
hile most of us associate inflammation with pain, inflammation can actually be a good thing. Specifically, inflammation is the body's natural response to injury or infection. However, when inflammation persists it can shift from a healing response to a damaging condition. Chronic inflammation is common among the aging population and is the root cause of many serious illnesses - including heart disease, many cancers, and Alzheimer's disease. Most medical doctors treat inflammation with steroids or NSAIDs (non steroidal anti-inflammation drugs) such as ibuprofen and aspirin. However, these drugs can have serious side effects. The good news is that there are alternatives to conventional drug therapy, many which have been clinically proven to be as good as or in some cases better than conventional drug therapy. Even better news is these alternatives are readily available and delicious.

Cranberries, blueberries and beets are rich in anti-inflammatory antioxidants. Red cabbage contains anthocyanin - a welldocumented anti-inflammatory agent. Red cabbage also contains significant amounts of polyphenols that help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. Broccoli is rich in an inflammation-fighting flavanoid called kaempferol. Besides its inflammation fighting properties, broccoli also contains sulforaphane, which experts say helps the body cleanse itself of cancer-causing compounds. How to be Healthy and Bodacious
L
isa Meikle is standing in her spa, talking about the great change she has brought about in her business. The moment becomes an emotional one, because what she is communicating is about so much more than natural body treatments or health products. The owner of the formerly named Bella Donna Esthetics for 20 years in Nanaimo recently changed the name to Bodacious Living by Lisa to express a bigger picture of what she does. The new name came to her as she felt the need to express different aspects of a woman’s life. “The name that came through was Bodacious Beauty,” says the petite dark-haired beauty. “It means taking risks in an admirable way. It means women have the courage to live their best life and to make self –care a lifestyle and support the ever changing woman they are.” As part of the name change to Bodacious Living by Lisa, she chose the peacock symbol to represent the spa. “The peacock stands in its beauty and brilliance to fully show up. We are here (as women) to stand in our beauty and brilliance and fully show up. It’s about standing in who we are, believing in ourselves.” She says the name Bella Donna was taken from her Italian heritage and means beautiful woman. “So it’s not like Bella Donna has gone. Bella Donna has blossomed into bodacious. To me 12
Herbal Collective Nov,’16
what that represents is that I have blossomed.” Meikle says she really wanted to stand for something that gets women to take action in their lives and this is what bodacious represents. She takes her spiritual growth, personal growth, business growth, health and wellness education and weave it all together to bring her spa to another level. “My spa services let me take care of you, nourish you and refill your cup to overflowing,” says Meikle. “Every area of your life functions way better. The products are to continue the care at home. The piece I’m adding is the selfdiscovery workshops for women who want to go deeper, take time to go within and to support the every changing woman they are.”
She has held Sacred Circles that take women on an inner journey so they can tap into their deeper wisdom. “We live in a world where we’re busy, there’s not enough time to go deeper into our hearts and inner knowing.” Women have been encouraged to emulate masculine energy and but what Meikle does is bring them back to feminine energy. Masculine is the action energy and feminine is the creative, being in the flow energy. Meikle says the heart wisdom moves down to the womb which she calls “our empty presence where we’re actually tapping into a well of wisdom that’s lives within ourselves. So the workshops are about women tapping
into their inner truth, having access to wisdom within that they normally don’t always have access to, when you’re normally in the busy mind, dealing with daily stresses. When you can go to a deep state of empty presence, you make space to deeply listen to what is real and alive within you, also what is new and bubbling up that maybe wants to be expressed, experienced and come alive.” The workshops at her spa allow women to come in and be nourished, feel safe and share with other women and be inspired by one another. She awakens the senses for participants using scent, taste, music, movement and taking women on inner journeys through guided meditation. “It’s about women celebrating and awakening different aspects of themselves.” Meikle brings this forth with the Goddess archetypes, a series of 13 essential oil blends with names like The Initiator, The Goddess of Love, The Visionary and The Mystic. New workshops start in spring of 2017. It’s an opportunity for women to rest and receive, feel safe and be nourished so they can fully express themselves and fully enjoy their lives. “They get to see whether these archetypes are alive or sleeping,” says Meikle. “What part of you is bubbling up that wants to be expressed. It’s about bringing more love, compassion, self- acceptance and space for us to grow as women.”
Besides the essential oils, Meikle has a Goddess Bliss skin care that is natural and safe for sensitive skin. It features recipes designed to improve the skin’s radiance and vitality. There’s also a body care line from Tuscan Farm Gardens, a family run organic farm, featuring soaps, body wash, body polish, mists, oils, balms, a gardener’s line and even teas. It features herbs like lavender, lemongrass, calendula, yarrow and comfrey. An aphrodisiac line by Hathor Aphrodisia will enhance the sensual pleasure between lovers with exotic oils, lotions and lubricants. These feature essential oils like ylang ylang, geranium, cinnamon and ginger. A natural foot care and hand care line is by Gehwol Germany and a natural pain relieving product from CryoDerm with herbs like peppermint, arnica, menthol, eucalyptus and boswellia. Meikle’s spa services feature facial treatments, massages like lomi lomi and Indian Head massage, hand and foot care, Reiki and Raindrop therapy with 10 essential oils applied to the feet and spine. Oil of Oregano Benefits Continued from page 5 times daily under the tongue. Let it sit there until the saliva gathers and swish it around in your mouth for a minute or two a couple of times a day. Place a drop of Oregano oil on your toothbrush when brushing. You will find that plaque does not build up on your teeth, cavities stop forming and the health of your gums improves dramatically. Skin Disorders Adult acne, psoriasis etc. are often Candida related but also require topical treatment. You may dilute the Oregano oil further if you are using on sensitive skin areas or need to cover large areas. 1 part Oregano oil to 3-10 parts olive oil depending on the application. Scabies Oregano oil has proven very effective in topical application against scabies. This is good news for those of us who like to avoid toxic pesticides or have young children that need to be treated. Apply topically and dilute as above if desired. Continue treatment until they are eradicated which should be quite rapid unless re-infection occurs. High Blood Pressure A word of caution here‌If you are on blood thinners, you should know that Oregano oil acts similarly to aspirin in thinning the blood. If you take Oregano oil with a blood thinner there is a possibility your blood pressure may drop too low. Contraindications Aside from the above caution regarding blood thinners there are no other known contraindications of Oregano reacting adversely with other drugs or herbs. This does not mean that caution should be thrown to the wind. Children Young children are best treated by rubbing a drop or two of Oregano oil on the soles of the feet. This is effective and avoids the fuss of administering it orally. Ear infections can be treated by rubbing the oil around the outside of the ear. Never put Oregano oil in the ear canal. A Word to the Wise Oregano oils on the market are not all the same. They range hugely in quality and effectiveness. Look for a 18 Herbal Collective Nov,’16
