Growing Herbs Indoors for Winter By Marilyn Zink

O

ne might think a sunny windowsill is all that is needed to grow herbs indoors during the winter. But there is a little more to it than that. Growing an indoor herb garden is a rewarding way to have fresh herbs a handy at a moment’s notice. There are some key areas to know about before starting the indoor herb garden. First, the amount of light the plants receive is extremely important. Most herbs require about eight hours of sunlight a day, so a window with a southern exposure should ideally provide enough light. Herbs that aren’t getting enough light will be leggy – with long stems and leaves or leaves that fade or fall off. Grow lights can provide light when nature doesn’t. These lights are different than regular lights as they provide full spectrum light that plants require. Lights can be purchased separately or a complete set up with pots can be purchased, which are often available at a local gardening shop. Another area to watch with growing herbs indoors is moisture. Most herbs don’t need to be kept moist but dry indoor temperatures may require more frequent watering than thought. One way to keep the herbs adequately moist is to place the plant on a tray full of pebbles with water poured into it. As the water evaporates, it helps provide the herbs with moisture. Another way is to use a water indicator spike placed into the soil next to the plant. These will signal when the plant needs more water. Herbs should not be overwatered as most herbs hate having ‘wet feet.’ Some herbs grow better in pots than others. These include many of the culinary herbs like chives, parsley, rosemary, oregano, sage, mint, thyme, lemon balm, French tarragon and basil. Grouping herbs together in a pot or window box is

an attractive way to grow them indoors. Just make sure the pot is large enough to allow the herbs room to grow. When preparing the window box, add some washed gravel to the bottom to make a well-draining layer. Top this with a special potting mix which has humus added to it. Allow enough room between the herbs for growth. When harvesting the plant, be sure to take small amounts at a time and leave enough for re-growth. Fertilizing occasionally may be necessary to encourage new growth. Keep an eye out for pests on indoor herb plants. Spray or wash with soapy water and pay extra attention to the underside of leaves where pests lay eggs. Learn more about herb gardening with the ebook on Herbal Theme Gardens.

Avoid the Common Cold with Natural Healing Remedies

T

he first sight of snow is the first indication of another on again, off again battle with the cold. With all the traditions this holiday season, getting the cold shouldn’t be one of them. This year, break free from the grips of the cold with these five natural tips from Chicago Healing Foundations. 1) Sink into Your Skin: Gua Sha is an East Asian healing technique in which the skin is lubricated with oil before pressured is applied, in strokes, by a round-edged instrument. Gua Sha promotes normal circulation, alleviating aching, tenderness and a knotty feeling in the muscles. 2) It’s all in the Cup: Cupping therapy is an ancient Arabic form of alternative medicine in which a local suction is created on the skin. After the body is relaxed, the cups are placed at different points through out the body, drawing out the body’s toxins. The holiday season draws near. If you are looking for

3) Flower Power: Inhaling White Flower Oil will clear a stuffy nose and chest from a cold or flu. Massaging the White Flower Oil on one’s chest will not only relieve sore muscles and aches but also help open up congested breathing. 4) Skip the Green Tea: Ditch the green tea this season and use Yin Chiao Tea instead. Chinese herbalists believe that cold and flu germs remain on the “surface” for a short period of time after entering the body. It is during this critical time that Yin Chiao can be most effective in reducing body stress. 5) Put a Scarf On It: Prepare yourself from all the elements, especially the wind, by wearing a scarf this season. In Chinese medicine, it is believed that the cold isn’t the result of shared sneezing and sniffling of others, but by the wind penetrating into the body. Stay healthy and look good doing it.

Herbal Remedies for Colds and Flus

W

ith the advent of winter, many people are looking for natural health solutions to fight disease and stay healthy. Herbs are a wonderful solution but which herbs to take and how often. When taking herbs, it’s important to know that some herbs should be taken for a short time while others can be taken for longer periods such as immune boosters and herbal adaptogens. These herbs give the body the tools it needs to prevent

disease but they don’t necessarily kill viruses. The herbs that should be taken for shorter periods of time, like a week to 10 days, are stimulating herbs that are anti-viral, anti-bacterial and kill viruses. Immune boosters and adaptogens are great at preventing disease while anti-viral and anti-bacterial herbs are great at helping the body heal from a disease such as a cold or flu. Some herbs do both Taking the Herbs: Some herbs can be taken in tea form while others are best taken in capsules while still others are taken as tinctures or as an essential oil in an olive oil

Immune Boosters Ashwagandha – Also known as Indian ginseng, this herb is known for its rejuvenating and anti-inflammatory effectives as it strengthens the immune system and works as a general tonic. Look for an in-depth article on this herb elsewhere in this issue. Holy Basil or Tulsi – Considered an “Elixir of Life,’ this herb is an adaptogen so it helps the body deal with stress so it boosts the immune system and helps the body heal from inflammation. Reishi Mushroom – Known as the ‘Mushroom of Immortality,’ the Reishi mushroom is well known in Asian medicine for balancing and revitalizing the body. Ginseng – Considered an adaptogenic herb, ginseng is well known as an energy booster and it also boosts the immune system. The ginsenosides, the active ingredient in ginseng, help protect against oxidative damage in cells. Ginger – Known for easing nausea, motion sickness and morning sickness in women, ginger is also great for coughs and colds. It can be taken in a tea or mixed with honey to ease sore throats and coughs. It’s also particularly good for digestive issues and reducing vomiting associated with the flu.

Anti-viral Herbs Astragalus Root – known for boosting the immune system, it stimulates the ‘germ eating’ white as macrophages, increases the production of immune globulins, as well as activating T-cells and natural killer cells. Garlic - a very effective anti-viral. Best if it is used fresh. Fresh cloves should be crushed and used within an

hour. Garlic capsules can be taken if one doesn’t want to have the side effect of body odours. Echinacea – This herb has an impressive record of clinical research as it stimulates the immune system and can also be taken during illness to reduce the duration and intensity of colds and flus. Echinacea is best taken at the first sign of a cold as it is antibacterial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory. Elderberry – This powerful herb is a strong bug fighter as it inhibits the bacteria and viruses that causes colds and flus in humans. It does tend to have a cleansing effect on the body though so should be used wisely. Goldenseal – a popular and effective anti-viral, this herb is a bitter that stimulates the secretion and flow of bile and is also used as an expectorant. Goldenseal is powerful against a variety of bacteria, yeast and fungi such as E. Coli and Candida. Useful for colds and flu as well aas sinus and chest congestion. Avoid in nursing women, pregnancy, children, high blood pressure, heart conditions or those who have kidney or liver disease. Olive leaf extract – a powerful anti-viral, it has more anti-oxidants than green tea and boosts energy levels. The oleuropein in olive leaf scavenges the free radicals that damage the immune system. Oil of Oregano – This is a very potent anti-viral and anti-bacterial herb which is an essential oil diluted in olive oil and consumed internally. Usually a couple of drops are taken under the tongue. It is a very strong stimulant and should be used up to 10 days at a time. Herbal Collective

The Power of Ayurvedic Herbs with Yogi Cameron Alborzian

H

erbs are a powerful medicine used in Ayurvedic culture to give the body exactly what it needs. That’s according to Yogi Cameron Alborzian, an Ayurvedic consultant and author who has been featured on The Dr. Oz Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Today Show, Extra and Martha among others. He has written several books and spoke with The Herbal Collective publisher Marilyn Zink about using herbs in Ayurvedic medicine and his latest book, The One Plan. Yogi Cameron says herbs are medicines that have been used by traditional cultures, often along with mantras to increase their effect. Herbs are classed for their medicinal effect and their culinary use, and often a combination of both. Herbs like ginger and turmeric are frequently used and ‘they’re almost always on the menu,” says Yogi Cameron. These herbs are tri doshic, meaning they balance all three doshas or constitutions that comprise 8

Ayurvedic medicine. These doshas are Pitta , Vatta and Kapha that are in each person and relate to certain functions of the body. Pitta is about fire and energy but in excess can lead to indigestion, liver complaints, bloating and fatigue. Vatta is about creativity and curiousity and motion, In excess it can lead to dry skin, insominia, constipation and various nervous disorders. Kapha is nurturing, grounding and exhibits a calming presence in stressful situations. In excess it can lead to weight gain, diabetes and a feeling of lethargy. Yogi Cameron says Ashwagandha, Shatavari and Tulsi are three herbs he uses on a daily basis along with ginger and turmeric. “Ashwagandha is fiery in nature; - I use quite a lot of that. It is known as the hot side,” he says. Any time we need to bring up energy levels, boost the immune system in the body is when it is good to use Ashwagandha. Shatavari is more of a cooling, female energy, says Yogi Cameron. It’s from the Himalayan region of India and has a bitter, sweet side and helps to

Christmas Herbs and Spices Ancient customs and legends have connected many herbs with the Christmas season which are used in a variety of ways. Some herbs are quite familiar, like sage in stuffing, while others like myrrh and frankincense are steeped in a deep, spiritual past. They were two of the gifts offered by the Magi to the Christ Child. Frankincense and myrrh are both trees which grow in hot deserts of East Africa through Southern Arabia and exude a sticky gum resin.. Most people in the west are unfamiliar with frankincense and myrrh, even though they are both mentioned in historical documents. The essential oils of the plants can be used to make potpourri, in bath and beauty products or in an aromatherapy massage. The resins are burned to create a meditative atmosphere. Citrus essential oils such as lemon, bergamot and orange blend well with frankincense and myrrh to create a lighter and more uplifting aroma than the introspective aromas of frankincense and myrrh on their own. Other herbs and spices at Christmas time are rosemary, ginger, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Rosemary is used in cooking or simmering herbs while the spices are used in baking and beverages such as a mulled wine but can also be used for simmering herbs. Rosemary was called the herb for Remembrance as the flowers changed from white to blue after Mary laid her cloak on it. Rosemary is often shaped into small Christmas trees and has a wonderful piney scent. Simmering herbs are simmered together to make a wonderful, uplifting aroma in the home or elsewhere. A Honey of an Idea

S

truggling with a cold or sore throat? Honey with eucalyptus and menthol is a time honored way to soothe a sore throat. But honey is sticky and not always available. Now a Canadian company in Prince Edward Island has found a way to combine the health qualities of honey using patented technology into a lozenge with eucalyptus and menthol. “Honey is anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and contains anti-oxidants,” says Lindsay Mulligan, marketing manager for Honibe products by Island Abbey Foods Ltd, which is based in Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island. The lozenge is 99% pure dried honey with no additives, using a patent technology. “We’re the only people in the world who can do that,” says Mulligan. “It’s the only lozenge in the world made with 99% real honey.” Eucalyptus, menthol and lemon are added to enhance the healing qualities of honey. Honey is a natural healer and all the honey used for the lozenges are sourced from Prince Edward Island, says Mulligan. She says the company started as a food company with dried honey drops and granular honey for use in baking as well as honey John Rowe-Photo submitted candy. It all began with founder John Rowe when he was backpacking in Whistler in the late 1990s. Mulligan

says he always carried liquid honey with him to use as an energy source. Unfortunately he fell on the trail and the honey jar in his backpack smashed, making a sticky mess of everything it touched. When he got back to Prince Edward Island, he decided there had to be a better way to use honey and eventually after 10 years the company was started in 2007 to put pure honey into a solid form. After providing food products, the company started making the lozenges and Mulligan says the company will be considering other natural health products to their line. She says consumer reaction has been very positive to the lozenges. “We’ve had great reaction from industry and consumers as we’re offering a natural altnerative,” she says of the lozenges. “You don’t get that bitter, refined sugar aftertaste or feel that you’re eating candy.” Honibe products are shipped to 80 countries including Canada, U.S., Ireland and the U.K. They are found in health food stores, London Drugs, Shoppers Drug Mart, Sobeys and Superstore as well as available online. The company was featured on Dragon’s Den last January and their Honey Drop was named the Best New Food Product in the World winning at gold medal at SIAL in Paris in 2010 and won the Canada Brand Business Award at SIAL in Toronto in 2011. The Honey Drop has also been selected by the Canadian Space Agency as a snack for space and will be going to the International Space Station this fall.

Ashwagandha for Adrenal Fatigue By Jeni Greenwood

S

tress can be a nightmare. Along with the psychological effects come tense muscles, pounding headaches, and other uncomfortable physical symptoms. If stress remains unchecked long enough, adrenal fatigue can occur, leaving the body exhausted and the mind clouded with anxiety. So what exactly is adrenal fatigue and how is it caused? Your adrenal glands are located just above your kidneys, and for small glands they have a big impact on your body. These walnut-sized wonder glands produce cortisol, adrenaline, and DHEA -hormones responsible for protecting the body and mind from physical and mental stress. When the adrenal glands become burned out and fatigued, cortisol levels plummet and can fluctuate wildly from morning to night. Common symptoms of adrenal fatigue include memory loss, fuzzy thinking, exhaustion, anxiety, panic attacks, troubled sleep,

In other words, adrenal fatigue can do some nasty things to both the mind and the body. muscle pain, weakness, headaches, dizziness, eye problems, inability to handle everyday stress, feelings of being overwhelmed, depression, irritability, worsening PMS, low libido, hair loss, and an almost non-stop craving for sweets. In other words, adrenal fatigue can do some nasty things to both the mind and the body. Fortunately, nature offers up some herbal hope in the form of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera). Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb that has been used as a health tonic for centuries in Indian. It helps the body and mind successfully deal with stress and change, and is a great Ayurvedic remedy for adrenal fatigue. Ashwagandha helps the tissues of the body respond to stress in a healthy way, eases the mind, soothes nerves, calms anxiety, and acts to restore vitality to the body's systems. Best of all, it gets the adrenal glands and related hormones back into balance for an overall feeling of well being. Some people prefer to drink ashwagandha tea, made into a decoction by boiling ashwagandha root in water for about 20 minutes. About 8 ounces of this tea can be consumed up to 4 times daily. Other

people prefer the convenience of a capsule or tincture -- 200 mg of ashwagandha in capsule form, 1-4 times daily or 2 ml of tincture up to 3 times daily is a standard adult dosage. You can also buy ashwagandha as part of a blend that also includes holy basil, rhodiola, and Siberian ginseng. If you are are pregnant, breastfeeding, have liver disease, kidney disease, or hyperthyroidism, you should be especially careful when taking ashwagandha. That said, ashwagandha is typically safe, gentle, and effective for everyone.

Are Vaccines Safe? By Louis Hoolaeff

A

s the number of vaccines recommended continues to increase, so do the adverse events. Over the last thirty years Mary Tocco, an independent vaccine investigator and public speaker, has heard this same story many times …parents take the baby home after vaccines and the child is extremely upset, suffering with a fever, high pitched screaming now associated with encephalopathy or brain swelling and is inconsolable. Upon going to the emergency room or back to the doctor they are told that this is not related to the vaccines. Some babies suffer with seizures and even minor strokes all which go unnoticed by the physician. Unless it is life threatening the doctors say it is normal. Tocco, who spoke at the ‘Revitalize’ conference this past September in Red Deer, Alta, believes that our children are in grave danger. I want to share her story and her insights which are also at www.childhoodshots.com.

Did you know vaccines may contain: aluminum, peanut oil, lead, antifreeze, MSG, mercury, acetone, glycerine, formaldehyde, yeast, alum, aborted human fetal cells, animal DNA, polysorbate 80, cancer viruses and more. If you are interested in specific vaccine ingredients please visit www.novaccine.com or www.cogforlife.org Tocco said many children are suffering with chronic illnesses like autism, ADHD, learning problems, asthma, diabetes, depression and obesity. She talked in-depth about the adverse effects of vaccination. Do you know that in North America we give three times more vaccines than any other country in the world? One of the most controversial health care questions facing parents today is "Do vaccines cause autism?" No matter how you crunch the numbers, autism has increased faster than any other health problem. The increase of autism went from 1 in 10,000 children 25 years ago to 1 in 110 children and specifically 1 in 68 boys.

Sue Waltman of Michigan Opposing Mandatory Vaccines and the brave doctors who took the heat for exposing the problems with vaccines, some lost their jobs and jeopardized all they had.

Autism affects the wealthy and the poor, children living in cities with smog and children in the country. It does not matter if a child is raised with a good diet, autism seems to have no prejudice. If a child is fully vaccinated they could get up to 38 vaccines by the age of two. Most autism is diagnosed by the age of 18 months when their normal development slows or stops. Mary started her research in 1979 when there were only a few research books available on this topic. She noticed health problems for vaccinated children were on the rise. Then she attended the International Public Conference on Vaccines sponsored by the National Vaccine Information Center in 1996. That conference gave her the hope and vision that change was possible. As each presenter expressed their concerns, she said she was filled with anger, frustration and deep sadness This sad reality was the motivating factor that drove her to continue her educational process. In the early days the chiropractors in Michigan kept her busy as she traveled from office to office speaking to as few as seven people. She would often say to herself, I just helped to save at least seven babies from injury and even one is worth my time! She then shared how parents felt when family members accused them of neglect or their doctor scolded and threatened them because they decided not to vaccinate. She has been told by many that living with a vaccineinjured child has changed their lives forever. Many parents said if only they knew they had the option they would have risked their child getting chicken pox or measles instead of autism.

Vaccine Investigator Mary Tocco People are now skeptical and distrusting of the government and believe the government works on behalf of the drug manufacturers and not for the people. Mary continued with, “This new generation of parents has made an impression on me and I now believe

Her highlight was being at the Government Reform Hearings, 20002003 with Congressman Dan Burton and Dr. Dave Weldon, who spotlighted the autism epidemic and toxic vaccine ingredients. She noted it has been a difficult fight for a very noble cause. Websites on the internet now provide parents with information to assist them in making the vaccine decision. Daily, the anti-vaccine camp is growing by leaps and bounds as more doctors admit that the vaccine program is causing injury and are joining in the debate.

Tocco said a good test would be to document un-vaccinated children and compare them with the As each presenteer expressed their vaccinated population to see concerns, she said she was filled with who is healthier. This work done by the company Acquired Intelligence and his father dying of cancer lead him to Professor Gerry Potter, an English medicinal chemist and his close colleague Professor Dan Burke, Anthony Daniels and other members of a research team on the link between diet and cancer. “That’s how I met these cancer researchers in the U.K.,” says Schaefer. “I really liked what they were doing.” He initially brought Dr. Potter and Dr. Burk to Canada through the Health Action Network Society (HANS) to give public talks and create awareness of their work. This was in 2001 and since then Acquired Intelligence and the team of researchers have formed Care Bio Technologies with Schaefer as president and Daniels as co-president.

Schaefer says Daniels is very instrumental in running the company, which is advancing with its research of how the anti-cancer salvestrols suppress tumour growth by killing cancer cells. Case studies have been done and published in journals of orthomolecular medicine. “We’re now working on the development of blood tests for early cancer detection based on the work of Dr. Potter and Burke,” says Schaefer. “That work is going really well. We’ve been able to pick up the disease in the early stages. But there’s still a lot of work to do. The testing is expensive and we need to do a lot of it.” He says early detection is critically important to helping people with cancer, so they can change their lives. “If we’re going to get anywhere with this disease, we need tools that will pick up the disease much earlier so that it’s not a panic situation (to treat),” says Schaefer. The earlier cancer is detected, the earlier diet and lifestyle changes can be made. “Then you’ve got time on your side to benefit,” says Schaefer.

Ten Natural Pain Remedies

Nature’s Most Powerful & Proven Early on in his career as a professional fitness trainer, Jesse Cannone realized that it was not the lack of will or desire that kept a large percentage of his clientele from reaching their fitness goals; it was the presence of chronic, debilitating pain. “The most common types of pain limiting the client’s motion were neck and back pain, often related to injuries,” says Cannone. “To help these clients regain mobility I decided to make it my mission to research available scientific literature and become familiar with every clinically effective pain relief cream, pain medication and natural pain remedy available in the marketplace.” Cannone says he soon discovered that prescription pain medications, while often able to effectively block aches and discomforts, came with a variety of dangerous side effects which, in his opinion, made their long term use inadvisable. “Studies showed that even garden variety over-thecounter Salicylates (Aspirin), when taken for prolonged periods, doubled the likelihood of perforated ulcers and

1. CMO “The story behind the discovery of CMO is that a scientist working for the National Institute of Health noticed that lab mice never contracted arthritis,” says Cannon. “After investigation, he determined that mice produced a rare fatty acid known as Cetyl Myristoleate (CMO) which gave them immunity from arthritis. When the scientist applied CMO to his own arthritic joints he found it completely alleviated his pain symptoms.” Cannone says researchers at the University of Connecticut were able to use CMO to produce pain relief for 100 percent of patients with joint and muscle pain in one or both knees. He also says a double-blind study at the Joint European Studies Program revealed everyone who took CMO experienced up to 87 percent improvement in pain relief. Additionally, The Journal of Rheumatology reported on a double-blind study of patients with chronic knee osteoarthritis where the CMO group saw significant improvement while the placebo group saw none. “CMO acts as a moisturizer on dry and brittle joints, cushioning the joints and repairing cell membranes,” says Cannone. “Some researchers have been so impressed with CMO they say it may be an alternative to the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for treatment of osteoarthritis.” 18 Herbal Collective Dec/Jan, 2013

gastrointestinal bleeding,” says Cannone. Cannone says further research eventually brought him to a 6-year observational study of 6,500 outpatients entitled “Homeopathic Treatment for Chronic Disease” published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. The study, which measured the results of using homeopathic intervention for a wide range of diseases, found nearly 71 percent of the patients treated with homeopathic remedies got better. “Because homeopathic remedies produced overwhelmingly positive results and no harmful side effects, we then narrowed our focus to find the most effective natural remedies for treating the specific types of pain that our clients were suffering from, which included back pain, neck pain, muscle pain and joint pain,” says Cannone. Cannone says the following 10 all-natural pain relievers, which can be rubbed directly into the skin over the painful areas, were found in clinical studies to produce the fastest and most effective pain relief:

2. MSM While CMO is one of the rarest substances to occur in nature, Cannone says MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) is one of the body’s most common. This naturally occurring nutritional sulfur makes the body’s cells more permeable, allowing nutrients to more easily flow in and out through the cell membranes. “MSM works in two ways to naturally relieve pain,” says Cannone. “First, it blocks the ‘C’ pain nerve fibers from delivering their chronic pain message to your brain. Secondly, MSM decreases swelling and inflammation.” Cannone says a double-blind clinical trial published in the medical journal Osteoarthritis and Cartilage studied the effect of MSM on patients over 40 with arthritis in their knees. One group received MSM and the other group a placebo. The MSM group all experienced a significant decrease in pain. Cannone also says that The Journal of Anti-Aging Medicine published a recent study showing that MSM resulted in an 80 percent reduction in pain.

8. Belladonna Cannone says for centuries healers have used a plant called Belladonna as a powerful anesthetic for surgeries. It reduces swelling, eliminates muscle twitches, relieves nerve pain, ends muscle aches and stops shooting pains.

none. “It’s good for sprains and back aches too. 10. Naja “Naja is a rare but amazingly potent homeopathic remedy from India that quickly calms nerve-based pain and brings fast relief from inflammation, says Cannone. “It’s also very effective at curing migraine headaches. Cannone says he has combined all ten of these powerful natural pain relievers into a single, convenient pain cream called Rub On Relief.

Cannone says that Ignatia, a plant used by ancient Chinese doctors, was discovered by a Jesuit missionary serving in the Philippines in the late 1600s. This homeopathic remedy calms nerves and reduces the stress which can lead to tight shoulders, a tight neck and painful tension headaches. It also relieves emotional distress, allowing muscles to relax.

“Phosphorous, the second most abundant mineral in your body, relieves the burning sensation of tight, painful muscles by stopping the nerves from sending pain messages to the brain, says Cannone. “It’s especially good at helping muscles rebound after a workout.

“Menthol is an ancient herbal medicine used by the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians to rapidly cool painful flare-ups in muscles and tendons, says Cannone. “It’s why whenever you use a cream containing menthol as an ingredient, you instantly feel cool relief to aching muscles. Cannone says menthol actually tricks the body by sending a cooling, pleasing sensation to your brain that thwarts the stinging heat of inflammation. Menthol then acts fast to increase the blood flow by widening the blood vessels to reduce inflammation and pain, he says.

How to Manage Heartburn

Effectively By Elizabeth Herman eartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) refers to a condition in which the stomach’s contents flow back up the esophagus due to a weakness in the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Normally the LES opens up to allow food to pass into the stomach and closes to prevent food and acidic stomach juices from flowing back into the esophagus.

H

When the LES is weak or relaxes inappropriately, the result is the unpleasant burning sensation known as heartburn or acid indigestion. Treatment of GERD aims at decreasing the amount of reflux and/ or reducing damage to the lining of the esophagus from refluxed materials. Lifestyle and dietary changes alone are often effective, however herbs can also help. Here are some tips: Raise the head of the bed to reduce heartburn while lying down. This allows gravity to minimize reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus. Avoid stooping, bending over at the waist, and constricting pressure on the abdomen. Avoid foods and beverages that weaken the LES, including chocolate, peppermint, fried or fatty foods, herbal bitters (such as gentian, artichoke leaf, yarrow, 20

mugwort, goldenseal, dandelion), and coffee and other caffeinecontaining beverages. Substances that can irritate a damaged esophageal lining include citrus fruits and juices, tomato products, and pepper. Decrease the size of portions at mealtime, eat slowly, and eat meals at least two hours before bedtime to allow stomach acid to subside and the stomach to empty partially. Lose weight. Being overweight often worsens symptoms.

A Tea for Reflux 1 part marshmallow root 1 part calendula 1 part chamomile 1 part meadowsweet Measure 1 tbsp. loose dried herbs per cup (250ml) boiling water. Steep for 20-30 minutes. Strain and drink 3-4 cups a day.

Avoid alcohol, as it increases the production of gastric acid, contributing to general discomfort. Stop smoking. Cigarette smoking weakens the LES. Deal with stress, anxiety, and any systemic health problems, as these will often exacerbate GERD. Exercise caution with the use of nonprescription antacids. These provide temporary relief but long-term use should be avoided as it can lead to diarrhea, altered calcium metabolism, and buildup of magnesium in the body. Too much magnesium can be a serious problem for those with kidney disease.

10 Ways Women can Get More Energy and Vitality at Any Age By Dr. Laruie Steelsmith omen at every age and stage of life can experience low energy, fatigue, and exhaustion. The naturopathic approach to restoring vital energy is to use strategies that address low function in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The HPA axis is a major part of the neuroendocrine system, which controls reactions to stress and regulates many body processes, including mood and emotions, sexuality, and energy storage and expenditure.

W

If you're an otherwise healthy woman, but feel that your energy and vitality aren't what they could be, here are some energy-boosting behavioral strategies, herbs, and nutrients that can help.

Mental floss. A key to restoring and maintaining vitality is to become conscious of your present thinking patterns and choices and how they may be affecting your health. "Mental flossing" every day means setting aside quiet time to clear your mind of all the accumulated debris and clutter from technology, media, to-do lists, and negative thoughts. It also means repeating positive self-talk--mantras such as I make choices that benefit me, or I focus on the positive. Doing this once a day replenishes energy and fights burnout.

High-fiber, low glycemic foods. Vegetables, the number one energy-boosting food, should make up at least a third of your diet. Because vegetables are high in fiber, the bulky part of the food your body doesn't digest, they prevent you from feeling hungry too soon after a meal. And because they're low on the glycemic index--a measurement of how quickly a food converts into sugar in your body--vegetables prevent extreme highs and lows in blood sugar so you have more energy, improved mental function, and a heightened sense of well-being. Fruits are great too, but try not 22

Herbal Collective Dec/Jan, 2013

to eat too many high-sugar varieties, such as watermelon,, cantaloupe, and mangoes.

Moving your body. Our bodies were designed to move and work. Fatigue and low energy are often our body's way of calling out for more movement. When you exercise, you're not only getting in shape and moving your limbs, you're also shaping your mind and moving your emotions. Find something you love to do, whether it's dance, competitive sports, martial arts, or hiking, and try to do it at least four times a week. The more you exercise, the more likely you are to continue doing so. Best of all, exercise pays you back by giving you even more energy.

Detoxing your home. All the chemicals we're exposed to inside our own home can become a major drain on our energy. Our detox organs, especially the liver and kidneys, have to work so hard to process all these chemicals that they become overburdened. Then we're exhausted. Toxic chemicals can be found in household cleaning products, personal care products, cosmetics, nonstick cookware, plastic food-storage containers, and manufactured foods. Replace all of these items throughout your home with healthy, natural alternatives. Rhodiola. This potent herb has long been used to boost physical endurance, energy, and moods, and to heighten mental clarity, sexuality, and speed recovery time after exercise. It assists you in adapting to stress, which prevents adrenal fatigue, and supports thyroid-gland function, which further protects your adrenal glands from being overburdened. The recommended daily dose is 100-170 mg in a standardized form containing 2.6 percent rosavin.

containing 14 percent polysaccharide and 4 percent triterpene.

Vitamin C. When you go through acute or chronic stress, you can lose a lot of vitamin C through your urine and may experience stressinduced adrenal fatigue. Vitamin C is important in your body's production of adrenal hormones. If you're having low adrenal function and are under a lot of stress, take a minimum of 1,000 mg of vitamin C twice daily.

Pantothenic acid. Also known as vitamin B5,pantothenic acid plays a key role in your body's production of adrenal hormones. For adrenal fatigue due to stress, the recommended dose is 250 mg twice daily. You can also get vitamin B5 from foods, including whole grains, legumes, broccoli, cauliflower, salmon, sweet potatoes, and tomatoes.

Having sex. Getting your sex life up and running is essential for vital energy flow. What's more, it creates a virtuous cycle--the healthier and more energetic you feel, the stronger your libido gets. The stronger your sex drive, the more often you'll enjoy lovemaking. Recharging your sexual energy is good for overall health. All of the energy-boosting strategies here will help to revitalize your libido as well. Siberian ginseng. Used for centuries to strengthen the body, Siberian ginseng contains compounds that can help you overcome stress by supporting your adrenal glands' hormone production. It also increases mental alertness and energy, enhances one's sense of well-being, and boosts sex drive. The recommended dose is 110-200 mg, containing a standardized extract of 0.5 percent eleutheroside, 2-3 times daily. Reishi. Reishi contains compounds with numerous health-enhancing effects, including adrenal gland support. If taken regularly over the long-term, it has a cumulative beneficial effect on your kidneys, stimulating your "chi," to allow for a powerful, slow-motion transformation of your sexual energy, which contributes to an overall feeling of vitality. The recommended daily dose is 800-1,200 mg,
